Justin’s flirting firestorm W hat happens in vegas sometimes does not stay in Vegas. Justin Timberlake, 29, cozied up with cocktail waitress Joey Williams, 24, at hot spot Tao March 10. "She had her hands on his chest under his jacket," says an onlooker at the Nightclub & Bar convention bash, where he was promoting his 901 tequila while his girlfriend of three years, Jessica Biel, 28, was in NYC to talk up her documentary Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro. It went no further (Biel's younger brother, Justin, was on hand), and a Timberlake source says Williams isn't his type: "He's into athletic, tomboyish white girls." (Like, say, his ex Cameron Diaz, with whom he is now filming the comedy Bad Teacher.) But the star's long been dogged by rumors of misbehavior. Biel's take? "She knows with all this smoke, there's something there," says a confidant. "But she's desperate to keep him. She loves being known as Justin's girlfriend." Counters another Biel source, "If she thought he cheated, she would not stay."
Lindsay's silly suit Lindsay Lohan thinks she's on a firstname basis with the world. On March 8, the actress, 23, filed a $100 million lawsuit against ETrade, claiming that "Lindsay" the "milkaholic" baby in a commercial for the company is based on her. "It's slander in regards to my name," she
complains to Hot Stuff. Her argument? Papers reportedly show the ad's producers changed the baby character's name from Deborah to Lindsay during development. Adds Lohan's mom, Dina: "They crossed the line. They made a joke of my child!"
Kate Winslet: What went wrong Their hearts won't go on. After nearly seven years of marriage, Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes announced on March 15 they were splitting. Hot Stuff has learned things got bad when they filmed Revolutionary Road in 2007. "Sam told friends Kate would talk about the film the moment they woke up, and it was overbearing," a source says. Matters worsened when Winslet, 34, and Mendes, 44 who have son Joe, 6 (she has a daughter, Mia, 9, from her marriage to director Jim -Threapleton) took time off in 2009 to be together. "They went stir-crazy and argued more than ever," the insider says. The final straw? Winslet agreed to shoot miniseries Mildred Pierce in NYC, while Mendes wanted to stay in the U.K. "Kate told Sam, 'Your career is not more important than mine,'" the source says. "They decided it was over." COPYRIGHT 2010 US WEEKLY
Those on campus needing a lift may not have to wait for the bus anymore. Instead, they now have the option to swipe a card and hop in a Mini Cooper to run their errands. UK Parking and Transportation Services unveiled the UK Car Sharing Program March 22. Teaming up with Connect by Hertz, students and employees can sign up for a program that offers car rentals right on campus. Car sharing has been popular in Europe for many years, said Director of PTS Don Thornton, but has only grown in the U.S. over the past 10 years. As more car-sharing programs developed, Thornton said they realized students were excluded from the opportunity. “We were looking at car sharing programs and they pretty much eliminated a lot of students — the 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds — and that’s the group we wanted to target,” Thornton said. “As the systems grow and develop, a lot of universities and colleges involved have lowered the age limit to 18.” Because of the significant number of students on campus without cars, Thornton said he expects the program to be highly used. At the last survey, Thornton said about 35 percent of freshman did not have cars on campus, and even those students who do may find it inconvenient. “If you bring your car to campus and it’s parked in an R-Lot or K-Lot it just sits there,” he said. “If you only drive your car once or twice a month, why even bring it and have to deal with it? If you need a vehicle, all you have to do is become a member (of the program.) “I may even have to try out that Mini Cooper myself,” Thornton joked. The UK program requires the applicant be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Hourly rates range from $8-10 depending on the car, and gas, insurance and a GPS system are included. PTS spokeswoman Chrissie Balding-Tune said while helping out students without personal transportation is the goal, other students can benefit as well. “We are targeting students who don’t have cars at all on campus, but it’s also for people

who … want to get a group of friends to carpool to New Orleans to see the Cats play, you can all go in together,” she said. “Or people who use alternate forms of transportation, maybe you have a meeting and don’t want to show up all sweaty from riding your bike, so you can rent a car for the day.” Schools like Ohio State University vary the cars available based on the time of year, something UK hopes to replicate, BaldingTune said. During the beginning and end of the semesters, she said the department wants to have trucks available for students moving in and out who may need the extra help. Thornton said car sharing has environmental as well as economic benefits. The cars are all Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay certified green vehicles, such as a Ford Escape, a Toyota Camry and a BMW Mini Cooper. “It’s less expensive for students and their parents because insurance for young people is very expensive,” Thornton said. “It gives you the opportunity to save on gas, maintenance, insurance — all that is taken care of.” The basic membership includes a $25 application fee and a $50 annual membership fee, but both fees will be waived for the first year for people who enroll before May 15. More information on the UK Car Sharing Program and the online application are available at www.uky.edu/parking/car-sharing.html.

No Wake zone Hot shooting leads to Cats’ Sweet Sixteen berth
LOUISVILLE —The Cats’ fairy tale season was not going to be ended by a Cinderella. A’dia Mathies, the calm and collected freshman guard and Louisville native, was simply not going to allow it, as she scored a career-high 32 points to lead fourth-seeded UK (26-7, 11-5 Southeastern Conference) past pesky 13th-seeded Liberty (27-6), 83-77. It was the most points by a UK player in an NCAA Tournament game. Although UK won the game, the Lady Flames won the battle of the boards, outscoring the Cats in the paint, off the bench, on the fast break and on second chance opportunities to give the Cats a scare in their first NCAA Tournament game since 2006. Up next “I didn’t know what to expect (coming in),” Mathies UK Hoops will face said. “Fortunately, some of my Michigan State on shots started falling in the first Monday at 7 p.m. half, so that gave me a boost on ESPN2 in confidence, and helped my team get on a roll.” UK head coach Matthew Mitchell said when the Cats came out, they performed like they hadn’t played in more than a week, but Mathies’ performance showed no signs of jitters or sluggishness. “(Mathies) has that quiet confidence about herself,” Mitchell said. “Great players can sense when they need to raise their level and she really kept us in it … pretty remarkable performance if you ask me.” Liberty jumped out to a 13-4 lead early, before UK responded with a 17-0 run, including six points in 15 seconds, thanks to its characteristic pressure defense. NEW ORLEANS – UK gave the Big Easy another big blowout. Sophomore guard Darius Miller scored a career-high 20 points and freshman forward DeMarcus Cousins poured in 19, leading a group of four Cats who scored 13 or more points, and UK (34-2) cruised to a 90-60 win over Wake Forest to advance to the Sweet 16. For UK, the wheels kept rolling in its drive to the Final Four in Indianapolis. After shooting 51.7 percent from the field against East Tennessee State on Thursday evening, the Cats shot a blazing 66.7 percent in the first half against Wake Forest, including 6-for-7 shooting from Miller. “I don’t know what happened to Darius but I hope he keeps it up,” Cousins said. “When he plays aggressively like that, it helps our team out tremendously. I mean, it’s going to be hard to beat us.” Miller, who played for the U.S. under-19 National Team over the summer, shot just 1for-5 in the Cats’ first round blowout, but after missing his first field goal of the game, a 3point attempt, Miller was nearly unstoppable. The Maysville, Ky., native and former Kentucky Mr. Basketball hit his next seven shots and finished the game with 20 points on 7-for9 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. “It’s not going to be everybody’s night, somebody else is going to have to step up,” freshman guard Eric Bledsoe said. “Darius, I
Tough as nails
think, did a big part because he can see what he’s capable of doing. He can help us out. Once he knocks down shots, as you can see, we beat teams by a lot of points.” UK will face Cornell in the Sweet 16 in Syracuse, N.Y. The winner of that game will then go up against upstart Washington or second-seeded West Virginia. “The people that are going to be in that region, it’s going to be ridiculous,” UK head coach John Calipari said. “You’re going to have four teams that are good enough, all four, to go win the national title.” The Cats continued their hot shooting in the second half, hitting their first 11 shots from the field, and hitting 23 of their first 25 two-point field goal attempts for the game. With 11:59 showing on the clock, the Cats were shooting over 76 percent from the field — gaudy numbers junior forward Patrick Patterson said he hadn’t realized while the game was going on. “I couldn’t believe that we were up by 30 or more,” Patterson said. “I was like, ‘Man, is this right, right now?’ ” With 9:39 left in the game, perhaps frustrated with trailing by 30 points, Wake Forest senior forward Chas McFarland was called for a hard intentional foul on Cousins. Cousins laid on the ground before later getting up laughing, waving for the crowd to cheer. Daniel Orton was given a technical foul for pushing McFarland in defense of his teammate. Habitat for Humanity students partner with New Orleans residents to keep hope alive By Roy York ryork@kykernel.com

Freshman A’dia Mathies scores a career high 32 points against Liberty in the NCAA First Round.
As a beige SUV carrying five men and one woman drove through New Orleans on Interstate 10 last week, orange light from a sunset fell across the skeletons of once-flooded homes. Broken glass and plywood littered overgrown yards. Stray dogs wandered through debris. Faded red spray paint denoting fatalities and flood levels lingered on rotting, water-stained walls. Amid the destruction, new and remolded homes stood as a testament to the hope and resilience many feel in New Orleans. But in some parts of the city, hope is rare. More than four years after Hurricane Katrina left much of the city in ruins, 12 members of UK Habitat for Humanity made the half a day drive to donate hours of their Spring Break to help heal scars and rebuild lives in The Big Easy. They joined more than 200 volunteers who spent Tuesday through Thursday painting and building walls for five, single-family houses. “I believe that New Orleans has definitely been put on the back burner
as far as tragedies that have happened recently … but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done here, ” said Noah Brown, an economics senior who organized the UK Habitat trip. “There’s still a lot of people that don’t have suitable housing.” Katrina left 80 percent of New Orleans underwater in 2005 and caused more than $88 billion in damage when more than 50 levees failed in the face of the hurricane. According to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, 1,464 people lost their lives in New Orleans during the hurricane. The hodgepodge of UK Habitat volunteers came front different backgrounds, majors and political beliefs, but each felt compelled to help New Orleans continue to recover. To be eligible for a home through Habitat, a family must apply. If selected, they make a $500 down payment on a no-interest loan. The family must contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” to the organization helping build other houses. When the loan is paid, the family owns the home. “To be able to build your own house is very empowering,” Brown said. “When you build something with
your own hands, you realize all the little things that have to go in to making the project complete … you understand it a lot better and you treat it a lot better.”
One step forward On Wednesday, Larry Washington got a new lease on life. In one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods in New Orleans, Washington’s new, red house stood among countless abandoned homes with sagging roofs and missing walls. He fought back tears as a Habitat for Humanity representative handed him the key to his home and gave him a hug. “Without (Habitat for Humanity), I couldn’t be here right now today,” said Washington, a life-long New Orleans resident. “I love you all.” Washington, his 8-year-old son, Shane, and 15-year-old daughter, Lori, fled to Atlanta as the hurricane ravaged their home and neighborhood. Washington and his son recently returned to New Orleans, but his daughter is still in Atlanta. Though his house is empty save See Habitat on page 4

UK trumpet students bring home top-4 award By Katie Saltz ksaltz@kykernel.com
Five UK students made their way to a different kind of Final Four last week and left with an achievement of their own. The UK Trumpet Quintet competed in the National Trumpet Competition in D.C. on March 14. Up against schools such as the Juilliard School of Music, the Eastman School and the Peabody Conservatory, UK brought home 4th place in the contest. The UK quintet consisted of senior Andrew McGrannahan, senior Jas Lidyard, freshman Eric Millard, junior Don LaFleur and junior Ryan Bickett, Since 2002, trumpet Professor Mark Clodfelter has led the UK Trumpet Ensemble to the competition four times, each time advancing to the semifinals with three trips to the final four and one firstplace win. “To consistently place in the finals in an event of this
caliber puts us in an elite few schools who have done so,” Clodfelter said. “It is quite literally our equivalent of the national championship…” Clodfelter said the level of dedication to compete on such a level is one that can be related to the same standards of UK athletics. “The concentration required to perform a piece of this technical difficulty completely from memory at a consistently high level requires the same kind of peak performance training as an Olympic athlete,” he said. “The performer is required to hone their motor skills to a surgical level while capturing the emotional content of the music ...” The UK School of Music is one of 10 designated Areas of Excellence within the university, Clodfelter said, applauding the consistent support from Ben Arnold, the director of the School of Music. While many may not understand the prestige of the

Celebrating student groups like the quintet is vital to the university, Clodfelter said, because of the need for a diverse and cultured education. “As professors, we are here to provide a balanced education aimed at developing a sense of curiosity and a set of marketable skills,” he said. “Any student group that serves this purpose is worthy of support and encouragement.”

Health care arguments reside in what type of faith one has Over Spring Break, I didn’t have the freedom or funds to make the typical collegiate getaway a reality, but I did have the opportunity to go home and visit with my family for the first weekend of the break. Like a lot of the families I know, the major part of our Sundays is structured around going to church, which for various reasons has not been a regularity since I WESLEY have been in college, but ROBINSON something I enjoy if for Kernel nothing more than putting columnist life into perspective. During the sermon by Pastor Kevin W. Cosby of St. Stephen Church at the Southern Indiana worship center of its ministry, I got a little dose of that perspective. The sermon and to some extent a carryover from Sunday school got me thinking about the life of Jesus the things he did over the course of his life. From there, I personally stumbled over a not so new, well documented revelation — Jesus was a liberal. Does that mean liberal in the extreme sense the world is used today? Probably not. But I think pushing against social norms was definitely Jesus’ goal, ensuring that everyone felt the love of God and was not victim of a society of judgment, inequality and a system controlled by those who do not have the interests of the people in mind. Remember, Jesus was the guy who went against the status quo by healing the sick, respecting and loving the outcasts, all while preaching the opportunity for all to fall under the grace of God. Fast-forward to 2010 and the issues Jesus sought to change are still problems — and he has more followers of his teachings than ever. Yet, with the huge health care debate, the modern day disciples of Jesus have been some of the biggest detractors, and I just wonder where Jesus’ teachings are when this debate arises? Sunday narrowly brought us a landmark change in policy, as substantive health care reform became a reality after generations of drawn out debate. To me, maybe in naivety, I don’t think it should be as much of a debate. Maybe it’s the “brand” of Christianity I was raised in where compassion, philanthropy and empathy often trump the logic that says the bill could be too costly or the system isn’t
ready for a change. Analysts possessing far more intelligence than I will ever have, with a vastly specific knowledge of how economics work, question the ability to finance health care. Some of these analysts belive the plan is achievable, and others feel the bill is as untenable as the wretched system we have. That’s not to say physicians and health care providers fail patients, but the system prevents many from receiving the care they need to live the fruitful lives they deserve. I can understand the argument about the financial implications, but that is where faith should naturally kick in — the type of faith in Jesus that depends on for him to feed 5,000 people from five loaves of bread and two fish. Obviously government cannot operate with that type of philosophy as it currently stands, but if you were asked to give up five loaves of bread and two fish to help people who have a lot less, would you turn it down? A passage I’ve seen used by different writers from 1 Corinthians 12:24-25 has been used to support the bill as something Christians should be in favor of: “But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, that there should be no schism in the body, but that members should have the same care for one another.” I interpret that as the have’s need to look out for the have-nots, ensuring everyone maintains a level of unity as human beings. The most important aspect of this issue to me is whether or not the prospective sins of a few would hold back doing something that will potentially help so many? The plan would allow people to have elective abortions, but even if it did, would Jesus oppose a plan that helps millions for a small pocket of people who choose to do wrong? If that were the case he wouldn’t have offered salvation to the world, because of the many individuals who will never follow him. It is hard to live in a society where the prevailing religion is absent when we wage wars when our interests are served, but balk at opportunities to make positive change where it is really needed and even in our own backyard. But now reform is, and it’s time to show some of the compassion, love and grace we have been taught. Wesley Robinson is a Spanish senior. Email opinions@kykernel.com.
