Close to a comeback UK falls 86-74 in second round to UNC By Chandler Howard choward@kykernel.com
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Neither head coach Matthew Mitchell nor senior Victoria Dunlap wanted her final game in a UK uniform coming in the fashion it did. Though she and her teammates battled until the final buzzer, No. 5 seed North Carolina was too much for the Cats, as they fell 86-74 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Monday night. “It was a real uncharacteristic game for us,” Mitchell said. “There is no in between for us; we, for whatever reason, just weren’t in tune tonight. Our style of play is feast or famine … we looked really bad tonight.” UNC mounted a 14-5 run in the final 3:46 of the first half, in which it hit its first two threes of the game. UK’s only points in those minutes came from free throws. And though the scoreboard showed a bleak 40-30 halftime score in favor of the Tar Heels, things didn’t clear up much for UK after the break. UNC led the full 20 minutes after halftime, but at the 10-minute mark, things changed. UK came roaring back.
The Cats cut the lead to one possession three different times in the second half, but each time the Tar Heels responded. When it seemed UK had the comeback completed, it fizzled again, letting UNC slip further away, eventually losing by 12. Mitchell said he couldn’t have been more disappointed with UK’s “uninspired play,” as well as his inability to prepare the teams for the matchup against the Tar Heels. “It was one of the most disappointing performances I’ve ever seen from our team here at Kentucky,” he said. “I just feel terrible that somehow I couldn’t get us more inspired to play in the NCAA Tournament, I feel really bad about that.” It was the battle of the boards that told the story, showing 55-31 in favor of UNC’s lengthy lineup, which also posted eight blocks against UK. But neither the players nor coaches wanted to credit the loss to UNC’s height. “I don’t think their size had anything to do with it,” Dunlap said. “We’re used to playing teams that size. It was just a matter of us not coming into the game and playing the way we needed to … We just didn’t pull through.” See HOOPS on page 2

Display showcases 3-D art from UK alum By Amelia Orwick news@kykernel.com
Students will have the opportunity to see three-dimensional art from one of UK’s own on Tuesday. Artwork by UK alum Waseem Touma will be on display for students in the Rasdall Gallery starting Tuesday. Touma was born and raised in Sydney, Australia to Lebanese parents. In 2003 he came to UK to earn a Master’s Degree of Fine Arts. His multicultural background is the driving force behind his work as an artist. This exhibit will showcase his installation works, which are three-dimensional and designed to alter a viewer’s perception of space. Designated driving in your own car Service can chauffeur or pick up customers By Eva McEnrue news@kykernel.com
Two companies are offering a twist on the traditional cab ride home after a night out on the town. Be My Designated Driver and Rent-A-Driver are designated driving companies that transport customers home in their own vehicles, eliminating the hassle of having to retrieve their cars in the morning. BeMyDD provides a personal driver service in which drivers will arrive at a pickup location, drop off their own cars, get into a customer’s vehicle and transport the customer and his or her passengers wherever they want to go within a 50-

mile radius of Lexington. “It’s like being chauffeured around in a limousine, except you are in your own car,” said BeMyDD Customer Service Representative Aleksandra Lenovski. The driver will wait inside the vehicle until the customer is ready to go home. Drivers are dressed in a shirt and tie, but will adjust their attire upon a customer’s request. The fee is $12.50 an hour with a 3-hour minimum required. Reservations should be made ahead of time. The company started several months ago and has expanded to serve almost 20 cities across the nation. BeMyDD now operates in Lexington, Louisville and Northern Kentucky areas.

The service provides transportation for events such as airport transfers, medical care, weddings, corporate affairs and bar hopping. “The experience is much more personal than a cab,” Lenovski said. “Customers are able to drink freely without having to worry about finding a driver to take them home later.” RAD offers a pick-up service for people already out and in a need of a ride, but who do not want to leave their car at the bar. “RAD serves anyone who drives a car and drinks,” said RAD partowner Jeff Shepherd. “Our customers are generally young to middleage professionals who have more to lose if they

were to get a DUI. We will pick up customers anywhere in Lexington. Just call and tell us where you are, what kind of car you drive and where we should meet you.” Two drivers will arrive at the pickup location. One driver will drive the customer’s car home while the partner follows in the original car. Drivers wear yellow neon shirts so customers notice them when they arrive. RAD is a local business created in September 2008 by Jeff Shepherd, Bane Shepherd and Kevin Bailey. “We saw a need for a driving service that prevented anyone from getting behind the wheel when they should not be driving,” Shepherd said. to receiving a safe ride home. “Customers only have to use our service on their way home, versus having to pay a cab for both a trip to and a trip from the bar,” Shepherd said. “You may wake up with a hangover,” Shepherd said, “but at least your car is parked in your garage.” RAD charges a $10 fee, plus $2 per mile. The company requires a $20 minimum. The company asks customers call 20 minutes before they need to be picked up. BeMyDD also offers a pick-up service similar to RAD. The fee is $25, plus $2.95 for the first 10 miles and $1.50 for each additional mile. The company asks customers provide at least one-hour notice before they need to be picked up.

Barkley blasts Big East By Neil Best MCT
It was bad enough for the Big East that it got pummeled on the court during the NCAA Tournament's first weekend. But the TKO came in the CBS/Turner studio Sunday night, and it hurt nearly as much. By the time the conference's most vocal critic, Charles Barkley, was done with one of its most visible personalities, Louisville coach Rick Pitino was all but bowing in submission. "Charles, you made some great points," the guest analyst said as Notre Dame fell behind Florida State by 20

points. "I'm licking my wounds. I got knocked out in the first round; now the Big East is going under. I might as well just start swimming in the East River." By that point, even Barkley was feeling merciful. "You know I love you," he said to Pitino. That exchange was preceded an hour or so earlier when Barkley matter-of-factly said No. 2 seed Notre Dame would lose. Barkley promptly reiterated that the Big East did not deserve 11 bids and lacks elite talent; he also derided "these other idiots on other net-

works" who praise the conference. Pitino earlier halfheartedly tried defending the Big East but eventually threw in the towel and mostly clammed up. The four-channel format also has hugely increased the time studio analysts have to express themselves. The network culture clash can be jarring, as when CBS' Greg Anthony stuck to sober analysis while seated next to TNT's raucous NBA frat house of Barkley, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson. The star as usual was Barkley. He is even more annoying when he is right.
“Thinking about where I started from, it means a lot (playing for UK),” Dunlap said. “Just being the player I am now, I’ll never forget it. I love this program, love this school. I’m gonna miss it.”

Pee-wee Herman on HBO LOS ANGELES Once upon a time, in a fair and distant land known as Los Angeles, comedian Paul Reubens debuted a stage show called "The Pee-wee Herman Show." It aired as an HBO special in 1981 and led to "Peewee's Big Adventure," which was director Tim Burton's breakout film, and soon Reubens was starring in "Pee-wee's Playhouse," a successful children's show that ran on CBS for five years. Then, in 1991, Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure in an adult theater and the show was shut down permanently. But permanently is a very big word, and last fall, a new incarnation of "The Pee-wee Herman Show" appeared on Broadway to mostly favorable, if brief and nostalgia-soaked reviews. Now there is another HBO special, "The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway," which airs Saturday. A renewed interest by Burton has not been mentioned so the cycle may have to stop here; talking chairs, wild-eyed adult hosts and wiseacre asides are not quite as groundbreaking as they once were in children's television. "The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway" is not, by the way, for children, despite the faithful (if enlarged) re-creation of the television's show famous set, with its bright colors, anthropomorphized accoutrement and wacky drop-in visitors. For every three kid-friendly hallmarks the secret word, jokes about toilet water, Pee-wee's childish rejoinders ("I know you are but what am I?") there's a decidedly adult double-entendre. Masturbation is referenced at least twice, abstinence rings are dis-

cussed, and the local firefighter shows off his calendar shot which requires, apparently, three pages to accommodate his "hose." Reubens' ability to capture childhood's heady blend of wonder and narcissism while throwing a few knowing winks at the adult audience was one of the chief reasons Pee-wee and his show were so successful. He threw tantrums, he teased his friends, he said the sorts of things real kids said in a voice that both embraced and mocked youth. Before there was SpongeBob, or, for that matter, "South Park," there was Pee-wee, sweet and bratty, innocent and knowing. Despite growing older, Reubens remains slender and graceful. But while his voice is as elastic as it ever was, his face has undeniably aged, which adds to the occasional creepiness factor of the show. Pee-wee was always a boy-man, but Reubens is pushing 60; when he is flying through the air singing "I'm the luckiest boy in the world" the words "Sunset Boulevard" do come unfortunately to mind. Still, fans of Pee-wee will no doubt delight in a return to those strange and halcyon days before the Wiggles and Blues Clues took over the world, when Barney was still Fred Flintstone's sidekick and not a purple dinosaur and Pee-wee's multigenerational appeal was subversive and unique. Come out and show that UK cares about the climate! As carbon emissions continue to increase from human activities, the woes of climate change intensify. The Environmental Protection Agency found that greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities increased by 14 percent from 1990 to 2008. KATIE The first step in this HARVEY movement for action is to acknowledge that increasGuest es of greenhouse gases columnist (GHGs) in the atmosphere lead to a series of negative effects on the environment, which include but are not limited to: increased warming, increased precipitation, increased intensity of tropical storms, acidification of oceans, decreased area of arctic sea ice and glaciers and a shift in optimal habitat for flora and fauna. It is easy to see that the severity of climate change is no laughing matter. As the “Wildcat Coal Lodge” starts construction, the UK student body needs to make its voices heard and make it known that it is taking the effects of climate change seriously. This is an issue that transcends political beliefs and religious beliefs and affects all of us. In order to raise awareness of climate change on campus, two events are being organized for Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a World Wildlife Fund global climate change awareness celebration during which places all around the globe turn off their lights for one hour on
Saturday, March 26, at 8:30 p.m. in a symbolic display of unity for positive environmental action (www.earthhour.org). So if nothing else, turn off your lights for an hour! However, some cool folks on campus (Student Sustainability Council and Earthdays in the Bluegrass) have organized the events listed below to help get the word out on climate change. Check ’em out! The Earth Hour Climate Change Panel is happening Thursday, March 24, 5 p.m. — 6:15 p.m. in Davis Marksbury Auditorium. This will be an open and diverse discussion about several climate change topics with Shane Tedder, David Atwood and Tom Webb. Come and learn about how UK and Lexington are working towards a more sustainable community and what you can do to help! Earth Hour Outdoor Concert is going down Saturday, March 26, at the UK Outdoor Amphitheater (behind Memorial Hall), 6:30 p.m. — 8:30 p.m. Come out and listen to free live music by Coralee and the Townies and Sundown Service in the beautiful outdoor amphitheater. It will be good people and good music, with an opportunity to sign a petition for the future UK president to join the President’s Climate Commitment. Please come out and support these wonderful events. UK needs more positive environmental change and you should be a part of it! Because in the end, what’s the downside of mitigating climate change? A cleaner, less polluted world? Katie Harvey is a natural resource conservation management senior and Earth Hour Event coordinator. E-mail opinions@kykernel.com.

Losses provided lessons that help now By Aaron Smith asmith@kykernel.com
It was the kind of game UK might not have won in January. That gritty, comeback win against West Virginia. Not when they didn’t value the importance of every possession, no matter the stage of the game. “We let certain balls get away,” Brandon Knight said of the team’s play earlier in the season. “I think going through those times helped us, let us know, that key possession could have won us that game if you would have got us. Now guys are going after that, like, this could be the game winner.” Not when they didn’t stay true to the game plan at the end of the game. “We panicked more in the clutch than we do now,” Terrence Jones said. “We aren’t afraid of making mistakes.” Not when they were hesitant to talk to each other, to get on each other when mistakes were made. At one point in UK’s win against West Virginia, Knight looked at head coach John Calipari, wanting the coach to direct Terrence Jones to get in the post. Calipari told Knight to tell his teammate that himself. “They love each other so there’s no big deal about it, and they can laugh about it later, but that’s what a good team can do,” Calipari said. “They can get on each other. They know it’s not personal.”
The transformation even stretched to toughness — something Calipari has implored his team to develop throughout the year. Facing a team that prided itself on outworking opponents to compensate for a lack of athleticism, UK was the one fighting for everything. “Coach used to talk about us not being tough, or tough enough, he would say,” Darius Miller said. “He actually called us tough after the game today. That’s a big step for us.” The road losses were blows to the psyche of the team, but Calipari continued insisting that UK would end up where it needed to be come March. It’s looked that way recently, with the SEC Championship Tournament title and two wins in the NCAAs. They were all learning losses. Not closing down the stretch, a hesitancy to take (and make) the big shots, a maddening disposition to turn the ball over when points were needed. Following one of those losses, at Florida, Calipari was frustrated and bewildered. But the day after, he maintained that the loss was good — it let the team know that it had to PHOTO BY BRITNEY MCINTOSH | STAFF improve, rather than thinking the wins would continue Terrence Jones, left, and Eloy Vargas, right, celebrate UK’s win over West Virginia with that type of play. Saturday. UK is on an eight-game winning streak. So now, in two games of the pressurized lose-andgo-home setting, UK is doing what it’s had to do to set up a matchup with Ohio State. “Our main thing is, survive and advance,” Knight said. “And we did that today. Hopefully we can continue to do that.”

Calipari prefers talent over experience; OSU has both NICK CRADDOCK Kernel columnist
Ten times out of 10, John Calipari will take talent over experience. That’s the UK head coach’s mantra when it comes to molding his roster, and it’s served him well: With the win over West Virginia, Calipari’s teams have made a Sweet 16 appearance, at a minimum, for six straight seasons. Calipari is thought of as one of the coaches who best takes advantage of the oneand-done (a player who plays one year in college before turning pro), but prior to last year’s UK team loaded with four freshmen contributing big-time minutes, his teams were not abundant with freshmen talent. In fact, Calipari’s 2007-08 Memphis team that lost to Kansas in the national championship game only included one freshman, Derrick Rose, as an integral part of the team. Except for Rose, the other four starters — Robert Dozier, Antonio Anderson, Joey Dorsey and Chris Douglas-Roberts — were all upperclassmen. Likewise, Calipari’s 1996 Final Four UMass team, though playing in an era before one-and-dones were popular, had two freshmen on the roster — Ross Burns and Charlton Clarke — neither of whom were anything more than benchwarmers.
“I can remember us having teams that went to the Elite Eight that then expected to be in the Final Four. You expect it,” Calipari said. “If you haven’t been there, it’s a little tougher for you. I think things happen; an inexperienced team is at disadvantage. “But if the choice is talent or experience, I’m taking talent.” So what happens when a team has both talent and experience, as is the case with Ohio St., UK’s opponent in the Sweet 16 and the NCAA Tournament’s overall No. 1 seed? “If you’ve got both, you’re in the final game trying to win the whole thing,” Calipari said. The consensus is that the Buckeyes are the best remaining team of the 16 left in the field; according to ESPN’s national bracket, 52.2 percent of the nation believes the Buckeyes will win the championship, and 78.6 percent of the nation has them advancing to the Final Four. If ever there were doubts about the sanity of this nation, Ohio St.’s 98-66 dismantling of George Mason, which included 16 OSU 3-pointers, affirmed that these Buckeyes are for real in a tournament currently lacking any other dominant teams. OSU’s fifth-year senior David Lighty, who was a member of OSU’s 2007 national runner-up team, junior William Buford and seniors Jon Diebler and Dallas Lauderdale have meshed well with freshmen Deshaun Thomas, Aaron Craft and Jared Sullinger, who averages a
double-double and compensates for what the other two freshmen lack in star power. And OSU’s veterans are at another level of experience than UK’s veterans — Darius Miller, DeAndre Liggins and Josh Harrellson. Save for Lauderdale, the other Buckeye veterans have been playing 29 minutes per game and upward for the past three seasons, whereas Harrellson played 88 minutes total last season and Miller and Liggins have only played more than 30 minutes per game as of this year. Even scarier, OSU not only has a combination of talent and experience, but a combination of inside and outside play, which makes it a team with no apparent weaknesses to attack. UK freshman Doron Lamb seemed unfazed and maintained that his team was possibly the best in the country, saying that the Cats “just got to prove it to everybody if they don’t believe it.” Not many pundits are buying what Lamb and his teammates are selling at this point. And if Calipari’s preference for talent over experience doesn’t work out Friday in Newark, N.J., he has a plan for the aftermath. “Then you can blame me for us not winning,” Calipari said. “But I’m taking talent. That’s just how I’ve been throughout my career. I’d rather have that than experience.” If Calipari had both, more forecasters would fancy his chances against the Buckeyes.

Embracing more beauty types SHELISA MELENDEZ Kernel columnist
No matter what age or ethnicity you are, you have most likely used some form of beauty or cosmetic products. Whether it is makeup, a facial cleanser or a hydrating mask, we’ve all run into it somehow. What I don’t understand is if almost every ethnicity consumes beauty and cosmetic products on some level, why aren’t more “ethnic faces” represented in campaigns? Why aren’t we as minorities properly represented? Yes, there are campaigns with both men and women representing various ethnicities, but these few campaigns are far from enough. Thankfully, beauty powerhouse Estee Lauder is stepping up to the plate.
Last week, the company held an event to introduce its new campaign: “Every Woman Can Be Beautiful.” At the event, Aerin Lauder, senior vice president and creative director for the company, presented attendees
with statistics on the demographics of skincare consumers. According to fashionista.com, she presented increased diversity, a huge Hispanic population and the fact that the 40 percent of women buying skincare in the 18-44 age bracket who are women of color seem to finally be making an impact on cosmetics and skincare companies.
“Estee Lauder has always searched for global beauties that define a generation,” Lauder said. The new faces of the campaign are Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls, who has appeared in Gucci, Prada, Valentino and Givenchy fashion shows and on the pages of Cosmopolitan and Vogue, notable French model Constance Jablonski and Estee Lauder’s first Chinese beauty, Liu Wen, who is also the first-ever Asian Victoria’s Secret runway model. In June, Estee Lauder will launch its new skincare line, Idealist Even Skin tone Illuminator. The new line will feature two products, “Even Skintone Illuminator” and “Cooling Eye Illuminator.” According to fashionista.com, the Even Skintone Illuminator addresses skin tone issues that are present in all ethnicities, like redness, blotchiness, discoloration and acne scars and will available in stores this June.
