After three days of interviews last week, the Presidential Search Committee is inching closer to finding the perfect candidate to be UK’s 12th president. The interviews conducted with candidates last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Hebron, Ky., helped narrow down a pool of more than 100 to a much smaller number, Board of Trustees Chairman Britt Brockman said. Candidates in that smaller pool were individually interviewed by the search committee. Brockman said the group of candidates was diverse, with many ethnicities, races, genders and professional backgrounds represented. “We were really happy about the strong pool we had and the diversity of the pool,” Brockman said. “We spent a fair amount of time with each of these candidates, but we still have a very strong pool that makes me very encouraged by the quality (of the candidates).” Brockman said a hot topic at the meetings was the Top 20 Business Plan started by current President Lee Todd, in which the goal is to make UK a Top 20 public research institution by 2020. He said the committee and candidates discussed the importance of and the Board’s commitment to the plan. Dealing with diversity was also discussed during the interviews. “This is a very large and complex university,” undergraduate search committee member Taylor Cox said. “We are one of the very few in the country with all our colleges here on campus. The next president has to be very astute when looking at the whole spectrum. It’s a lot to handle.” In addition to being Kentucky’s flagship university and a land grant institution, Brockman said having a medical center on campus and a highly complex athletics program makes UK unique. “There are only seven universities in the United States that have all those moving parts,” he said. “That makes us very desirable and makes it very critical that we get a president who knows how to organize. “With the (current) economic times, we need a president who can do more with less.” Aside from business and organizational aspects of the presidential job, ways the new leader will affect the student body were also discusses with candidates. “We’ve definitely had plenty of conversation about how the student experience plays a part in how the university reaches its goals,” Cox said, “whether it’s improving our retention rates or improving the way we reach students.” Despite long hours during the interviews, Cox said it was imposSee PRESIDENT on page 2

The road to the Final Four is a long one. Dedicated UK basketball fans will find that out when they trek 995 miles to Reliant Stadium in Houston to view the finale of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, at the expense of their wallets. Fan ticket prices for the both days of the Final Four can range from $200 to $20,000 per ticket depending on the seat location and the amenities included. Some full-time UK students were fortunate enough to win tickets from the UK Ticket Office during the Final Four lottery for the price of $25 for entire session. The Ticket Office estimated that approximately 800 tickets were available, according to a UK Athletics email. Winners received confirmation emails on Saturday and were delivered instructions on Monday about how to order from the NCAA’s Veritix ticket system. The digital system ensures that the tickets are non-transferable, the email explained. Winning students will receive their physical tickets at Reliant Stadium when they present their student IDs, the credit card used to purchase the ticket
No Lexington arrests follow UK basketball win By Drew Teague
Both Lexington and UK police were busy Sunday evening after the UK men’s basketball team defeated the North Carolina Tarheels. Masses of people flooded the streets after the game, celebrating UK’s first trip to the Final Four since 1998, resulting in temporary road closings. UK Police Chief Joe Monroe said that in addition to regular calls the department usually receives, his officers were out responding to calls about the celebration of students. “We didn’t make any arrests (Sunday) related to the celebration,” Monroe said. “We were very busy with calls ranging from large crowd gatherings, blocking the streets to couches being set on fire and just our normal business calls.” Several of the calls regarded a recent trend from UK fan during the tournament — burning couches. “I think within the campus area and on campus altogether ... it was somewhere around 12

While remaining ambiguous about the speech itself, Boyd said “Dr. Todd is an excellent speaker,” and encouraged all to attend. On the heels of UK men’s basketball team’s trip to the Final Four, Lexington announced Monday plans to examine renovating the Lexington Center and Rupp Arena. To start what will be a $350,000 comprehensive study of the venue, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray assembled a 42-person task force fraught with industry leaders who Gray said know the arena best. The committee will be called the Arena, Arts and Entertainment Task Force. “This task force will have a lot in common with our Final Four team,” Gray said. “We have a wealth of experience. These are people who are committed to our downtown and UK’s basketball program.” The study will be funded with private donations, Gray said. Its results will be revealed early next year, but Gray said not to expect immediate action once the study is complete. “Louisville’s KFC Yum Center “This task was a five-year project,” he said, force will have a “This will not lot in common h a p p e n overnight.” with our Final Gray said Lexington has 46 Four team.” acres at its disposal, while JIM GRAY Lexington mayor Louisville only had seven for its new arena. Lexington attorney and UK graduate Brent Rice will lead the committee. He called the team’s trip to the Final Four an omen to the committee and vowed to give UK the best venue. “It has to be the gold standard, the best of the best,” he said. To achieve this goal, Rice said money will be a major factor. “We can dream and plan all we want, but we got to pay for it,” Rice said. Gray also acknowledged potential finan-

and driver’s license. The seating locations designated by the tickets vary on both days. Half of the student tickets will be floor side, while the other half will be placed in the upper level. A victory for UK on Saturday will allow all student tickets to be on the floor for the championship, but otherwise all tickets will be upper level. Those without tickets may soon have the opportunity to acquire student passes. If there are tickets remaining from the lottery, they will be sold as general admission. Regardless, a lack of admission may not deter some fans from celebrating in Houston, as a plethora of restaurants, cafes and bars encompass a one-mile radius around Reliant Stadium. Though they have many options, the sizable distance will be a challenge for many students trying to accompany the team. Possible options for avoiding the estimated 17hour drive are by flight and a combination of bus and train. Roundtrip flights from Lexington or Louisville to Houston are currently averaging from $700 to $1,100, and seats are filling quickly, with some airlines reporting See HOUSTON on page 2

cial constraints, saying the economy poses a tough test for the project, but the UK basketball brand will “win the day.” President Lee Todd said he hopes the project eschews basketball. “This is broader than basketball,” Todd said. “We really need a place in this city where top plays from New York can be performed.” Efforts have been made to expand musical and artistic performances at UK, but the Lexington Center and Rupp Arena can hold larger audiences, Todd said. In addition to expanding UK’s artistic capabilities, Todd hopes a renovated Lexington Center will provide students with a place to hang out. Todd also acknowledged potential budgetary constraints, but like Gray and Rice, was confident any renovations or new arena will get funding. “This is the best time to examine the future because we’re at the bottom,” he said.
sible to be bored. “There was no way to get tired,” he said. “We had great discussions among the committee. It’s exciting to be moving forward in the process.” Moving forward requires what is called 360-degree betting, Brockman said. The search firm Greenwood/Asher and Associates will take the narrowed-down list from the interviews and perform background checks on each candidate and call references. The search committee will then meet on April 11 to decide on four to six names to forward to the Board of Trustees. Finalists will only be revealed to the public if they all agree; however, even if one asks for confidentiality, none of the candidates will be identified. Brockman said it is likely that the Board will choose one preferred candidate to introduce to the university community. Constituency groups will then have a chance to give feedback before a contract is signed. Brockman and the search firm have said allowing a confidential search paves the way for the best candidates to be considered for UK’s president. “It’s a huge honor, but I also realize it’s a large burden, to be representing the 19,000 students who make up the student body,” Cox said, “and it’s a commitment I take very seriously.”

For the best fuel efficiency, drive less than 60 miles per hour. For every five miles an hour driven over 60, it is estimated that one pays more than 24 cents extra per gallon. —Inflate tires to the manufacturer’s recommendation. It’ll be cool to see what he’s like and what he has to say.” Dr. Todd’s Final Word lecture will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Student Center in Center Theater. According to the Student Activities Board website, the Final Word Series allows UK professors, faculty or commu-
nity members to lecture about a topic of their choice. Speakers are asked to approach the lecture as if this were their very last. Past lecturers have included Robert Mock, Meg Marquis and UK men’s basketball head coach John Calipari. “It’s really interesting to hear an outgoing president’s perspective on things,” Baranowski said. “It really is his final word.”

‘Body of Proof’ premiers on ABC REASON TO WATCH: Dana Delany headlines her own series. WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Dr. Megan Hunt (Delany) was chief of neurosurgery at a prominent Philadelphia hospital when her husband left her and took custody of their 7-yearold daughter. Then, the coup de grace: A car accident that left her with a condition (numbness) that led to the death of a patient on the operating table. She’s forced to start a new career in the medical examiner’s office because “you can't kill somebody if they're already dead.” Hunt proceeds to butt heads with everyone notably chief of the ME’s office, Dr. Kate Murphey (Jeri Ryan), and Det. Bud Morris (John Carroll Lynch). She’s got sharp elbows and is not afraid to use ‘em. She reads all the clues the dead body offers, or, as she puts it, “honor the body for what it tells me.” Her hunky partner, Peter Dunlop (Nicolas Bishop), humors her. Entitlement program reform: who’s failing whom While the majority of UK students continue to be engulfed in March Madness upsets, there has been more going on in the commonwealth than most people acknowledged. For the past couple of weeks, the Kentucky General Assembly has been in special session to decide how to fill a $139 million shortfall in the Medicaid budget for this fiscal year, which ends on June 30. Originally, the governor proposed a plan that would take money from BRIAN ROSE fiscal year 2011-2012 and used it to compensate for the shortfall in this Guest one. He would then fill next year’s columnist gap with new savings from “managed care” policies for some services. However, the Senate was not comfortable trusting a balanced budget next year to savings the governor has said he would make. The Senate proposed a plan that would pay for the gap this year by making cuts to state programs, including cuts to education, which is not something legislators ever want to vote for. The session ended with the issue unresolved. But last week in special session the House passed HB 1, which plans to put the future of local budgets across the state in the governor’s hands. Similar to the governor’s original plan, they will be taking money from fiscal year 2011-2012, but Beshear must provide evidence of his savings by Aug. 15 or cut spending in programs across the state. If he fails to do so, it would inevitably become a quick talking point in debates for the gubernatorial race. On Thursday, the Senate voted on another Medicaid proposal with cuts to education, but would allow for restoration of these cuts if Medicaid produces savings. Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo deemed the Senate’s bill “unacceptable,” as it heads to the House. This is an example of a problem plaguing our country, and more specifically, our generation. Entitlement spending (mainly Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security) is not only a growing problem, but it is also a growing percentage of state and federal budgets. Entitlements are the largest part of most state budgets and our federal budget. The bipartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that mandatory
spending increased 10 percent ($191 billion) between 2009 and 2011. With nearly 70 million baby boomers ready to retire and an increase in mandatory spending for the President’s health care overhaul beginning (most of which will be in 2014), the idea that our budget deficits can be halted without reform is erroneous. At this rate, our generation faces incredibly high tax rates, more restrictions and a lower standard of living. In 2005, President George W. Bush saw his political capital fall after Democrats attacked his plan to divert some of Social Security revenues into privatized retirement plans. No matter who is attacking whom, telling people the opposing party is cutting its programs is an easy sell to the American public. Fast forward six years: It has gotten so bad, even in this political atmosphere, House Speaker John Boehner (Rep.-Ohio) told the President that Republicans would not attack him if he were to make a proposal to reform entitlements. He also told him that he would stand with the President and take the political backlash. Kentucky’s senior Senator, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), also recognizes the dire situation and concedes that reform would have to be a bipartisan effort, though he agrees that Obama will have to take the lead. So when you see headlines like what we have seen in Kentucky the past few weeks, whether it is Medicaid shortfalls or any of these programs, do not always assume someone is taking care of it. In the case of entitlements, without public approval, politicians will not likely take it on (that is, until it goes completely bankrupt). We will not see President Obama consider Republican leadership’s offers and make a proposal on entitlement reform anytime before the 2012 elections. Hopefully, with whatever demographics of Congress and White House the 2012 elections bring us, these folks will begin to take deficit reduction seriously and that means reforming these programs. There also has to be accountability when it comes to citizens, not just our government. Stay informed, dig for the truth, think critically and our generation can be saved. Record label cannot destroy this “laser” I have been listening to the newest album by one of my favorite hip hop artists, Lupe Fiasco, called “Lasers,” and didn’t realize artists can have a love/hate relationship with their own albums. In many online interviews, Lupe has said, “I listen to it and I'll like some of the songs. But when I think about what it took to actually get the record together … I hate this album.” What we music lovers don’t realize is the struggles artists have to go through with their record labels to get that top of the chart album to anxiously waiting fans like myself and to have some good music to listo besides the radio. In music reviews, Lupe was ASHLEY E. ten trying to please the corporate part of the industry and JACKSON it wasn’t a true Lupe Fiasco album. In a Travis Smiley interview, Lupe Fiasco exGuest pressed he had problems with his record label Atcolumnist lantic, which is owned by Warner Bros. Lupe was originally suppose to release a triple album, called “LupE.N.D,” as his third and final album, but Lupe’s contract with Atlantic records postponed his agenda. Lupe was then going to release another album in June 2009, called “The Great American Rap Album,” but that project also got postponed by the record label. Once the “Lasers” project came into effect, the record label wouldn’t release an album date. Record labels have too much control over an artist’s creativity to develop and release good music to fans. Lupe admitted to handling the situation with his record label poorly and having issues with depression and even suicidal thoughts over the conflicting interest of the “Lasers” album. He also expressed how as an artist you have to know it’s a business and it gets separated between subjectivity versus objectivity and the creativity versus the business. This is part of the artist’s creativity process to meet the needs for the business part of the industry. During this long dilemma with Atlantic records, Lupe stated he had to take a stand back and find the best way to get his album out but he wasn’t alone. In October 2010, fans in New Jersey set up protests to the record labels to give Lupe a release date. After almost four years of waiting for a highly anticipated album, Lupe Fiasco’s “Lasers” sold 204,000 copies in its first week and was the No. 1 album on the Billboards. Despite of all the obstacles and struggles, Lupe is still one of my favorite hip hop artists and “the show goes on.” Ashley E. Jackson is a merchandising senior. Email opinions@kykernel.com.

Spring storylines: Newton’s team now By Ethan Levine sports@kykernel.com
For the past three years, Big Blue Nation strapped in and rode the highs and lows of having Mike Hartline as quarterback of the UK football team. But in UK head coach Joker Phillips’ second year at the helm, it will be a new face commanding the offense — sort of. Junior Morgan Newton will take over in his first full year as the Cats’ starting quarterback, despite having made nine career starts prior to 2011, including in UK’s appearance in the BBVA Compass Bowl against the University of Pittsburgh in
January. An upperclassman with moderate experience, Newton will assume much of the responsibility of the offense replacing Hartline. In 2009, when Hartline suffered a season-ending knee injury against the University of South Carolina, Newton was inserted as the starter and started the final seven regular season games for UK, going 5-2 in those games. Newton then started in the team’s postseason appearance in the Music City Bowl in 2009, falling to Clemson. He also started the team’s bowl game in 2010, a loss to the University of Pittsburgh.
But this year is different. When Newton makes his first start on Sept. 1 against Western Kentucky, it won’t be in a fill-in role. With only one other scholarship quarterback on the roster, gray-shirt freshman Maxwell Smith, the offense is now Newton’s to run from day one. When Newton was asked what spring practice was like as the team’s starter and most experienced quarterback, he said it was more important than ever for him to focus on improving his game for the squad. “There is an experienced quarterback around. Andre (Woodson) is here,” Newton said of new assistant coach
and former UK quarterback Andre Woodson. “It’s a little bit different, but with that said you just have to stay humble and continue to get better every day. That’s the most important thing. “It’s another year in the offense. I’ve been working a lot on footwork and stuff like that. It’s just another year of becoming familiar with the things we have got going on, and kind of add some things to help us be successful.” More than his performance on the field, Phillips expressed his desire to see Newton shine as the commander of the offense off the field, not just on Saturdays, but also Sunday through Friday.
UK players’ words on Jay-Z By Aaron Smith asmith@kykernel.com

Rapper Jay-Z poses with the team in UK’s locker room after the Cats’ win over North Carolina that earned them a berth in the Final Four. The players said they weren’t aware Jay-Z was in the arena.
After beating North Carolina to earn a Final Four bid, the UK players were surprised by rapper Jay-Z as they headed back to the locker room. “I didn’t know (he was there),” Terrence Jones said. “I was shocked when I saw him. He was out in the hallway, Josh saw him and gave him a hand shake. I was like, let me get one, too.” Asked what his first reaction was, Jones raised his voice: “I said, ‘OHHHH! THAT’S JAY-Z!’” Jay-Z is a partial owner of the New Jersey Nets, who play at the same arena UK played at in the East Regional. The music mogul congratulated the team and shook their hands. “I kind of had to do a double-take,” Darius Miller said of Jay-Z’s impromptu appearance. “I didn’t expect it at all. I had to get a picture with him.” The presence of one of the music industry’s top stars showing up to congratulate the team, added to the excitement level from winning. “Jay-Z, one of the best rappers — the best rapper — him being here just adds the cherry on top of the ice cream,” Jones said. Considering Drake was last year’s tournament visitor, hanging in the locker room for UK’s second-round game, next year it might be — in the words of Jay-Z himself — “on to the next one.” “We’ll probably have a different rap star next year,” said Doron Lamb.
“I want to see Morgan lead, first of all,” Phillips said. “Morgan is a talent. We have to be more efficient in the passing game. There is no question about that. We also want to see Morgan take con-
trol of this offense and lead it in the right direction — and the right direction is toward the goal line. He is certainly talented enough … We are excited about Morgan’s opportunity.”
