Breaking down racial barriers Machine offers new perspecitve on race By Jarrod Thacker news@kykernel.com

An event coming soon to campus will alter the conceptions of “race” for many UK students. The Human Race Machine, a device that allows its users to view themselves as a member of a different race, will be in the Student Center from March 31 to April 2. The machine is a part of the the Cultural Diversity Festival, which began in March and ends in early April. The machine uses a built-in camera to take a photo of the user, while software allows participants to morph their visage into the following races: African, Asian, White, Hispanic, Indian and Middle Eastern. The machine was “We want created by a Connecticut people to have the firm and experience of seeing Wolfman Productions, with themselves as a software by Nancy Burdifferent race.” man, a New SCOTT WOLFMAN York City Company president artist. “We want people to have the experience of seeing themselves as a different race while contemplating that there is no gene for race; that the only race is the human one,” Scott Wolfman, the company president, said. Wolfman estimates that his company has booked the Human Race Machine to more than 200 schools in the last 10 years. Karen Slaymaker, the assistant director of International Student and Scholar Services, said that bringing the machine to Kentucky was a collaborative effort by pulling together resources from several colleges, including Asbury College, Georgetown, Berea, Transylvania and UK. Roommates Eric Russell and Aaron Havill were the chair’s downfall after deciding to load it in Russell’s truck and drop it on Montmullin Street, where a group of UK fans celebrating the men’s basketball team’s win over North Carolina had started a bonfire. “They already had a fire going, so we were just trying to fuel the fire,” Russell said. “We were like, ‘All right, well we need something bigger to throw on there; we need to find a couch or something,’

and we didn’t want to burn any leather couches, so we took the cloth recliner and put it on there.” Smith was out celebrating the UK win when his roommates did the deed. They failed to ask Smith’s permission before taking the beloved chair from its now-empty corner. “It definitely had some sentimental value to it, and it’s just gone. Absolutely gone,” Smith said. “Without even telling me it was getting burned; without asking my permission; without me burning it myself. I didn’t even get to enjoy that. “I was so mad because they didn’t ask.” Even firefighters who arrived on the scene showed little compassion for what was being done to the recliner. “They showed up and they just kind of laughed about it,” Russell said. “And they were like, ‘We did this when we See FIRE on page 3

‘Mad Men’ delayed until 2012 By Melissa Maerz MCT

NEW YORK — Due to continuing contract negotiations between “Mad Men” creator Matt Weiner and AMC, the series will not return until early 2012, the network said on Tuesday. AMC announced that it has officially authorized production of the show’s fifth season, triggering its option with “Mad Men’s” production company, Lionsgate, but confirmed that the show won’t be back until next year. “While we are getting a later start than in years past due to ongoing, key non-cast negotiations, ‘Mad Men’ will be back for a fifth season in early 2012,” the network said in a statement. Two years ago, Weiner had a similar dispute with AMC over those two minutes, and both sides eventually agreed to let the episodes run over into the 11 p.m. time slot so that extra commerical time could be added without making the scripts any shorter. She was one incredible person and people couldn’t use enough adjectives to describe her. She was overwhelmingly inspiring.” Leah Bayens, a writing instructor, said she is excited about the Pushcart Literary Award that Kelly received posthumously for an essay published in Brain, Child magazine titled, “This Sucks.” “She’s that kind of person — she could take the worst situations (and) still give them that weight of how serious they were and kind of turn it on its head with some humor,” Bayens said. “In the essay, she’s talking about this serious situation, but she’s able to acknowledge when she’s frustrated and do it in a way that’s endearing, and you’re crying and you’re laughing at the same time. That was one of the ways she approached the knowledge that she had breast cancer,” she said.

Smith said he was unsure if he would have allowed his roommates to burn the chair even if they had asked. “I definitely would entertain the thought,” he said. Smith said that even though the recliner was not the most “appeasing to the eye,” it was in decent condition and no part of it was broken. “It was a perfectly good chair,” Smith said. He said Russell had apologized for the chair’s fate, but Havill has yet to. “We’re still not talking,” Havill said. “We told him we’d buy him a nice (recliner) with a good little cup holder — if he talks to us again.” Havill said he and Russell chose to burn the recliner instead of the couches in their house. “I still haven’t seen the remains of my chair,” Smith said. “It was worn in; it was so comfortable. “(Its burning) really was heartbreaking.” The recliner is survived by Smith, Russell, Havill and other roommates John Aretakis and Adam Walpole. Insidious is a return to good horror By Roger Moore MCT

One of the demons in “Insidious” is wearing what looks like a Darth Maul Halloween mask. And the finale is both a tad too literal and a lot too long and drawn out. But that doesn’t spoil what is, without a doubt, the spookiest and most entertaining horror flick since “Paranormal Activity.” “Insidious” is a haunted house tale in the “Poltergeist” mold _ a child in jeopardy, a mother (Rose Byrne) struggling to get her head around what may be happening, a father (Patrick Wilson) in denial. Renai and Josh and their three kids have just moved into a nice, older wooden two-story home that should

be out of the reach of a high school science teacher and his stay-at-home wife. Well, she does dabble in songwriting. But at home alone, she’s hearing things in this quiet, creaky house. So does their oldest son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins). He investigates, and next thing you know, he’s in a coma that medical science can’t explain. As Renai stares mournfully at her little boy as the nurse explains how to lubricate the breathing tube she’ll have to remove, clean and insert every day, the quietly chilling home settles into mourning. “I feel like the universe is just seeing how far I’ll bend before I break.” She doesn’t know the half of it. James Wan, graduating from the “torture-porn” genre he helped launch with “Saw” and working with both his

“Saw” screenwriter/collaborator Leigh Whannell and producer Oren Peli (“Paranormal Activity”), builds tension with glimpses of cadaverous faces, people in odd costumes and the like. Doors open and close, whispers rumble through the baby monitor. And the hairs rise on the back of your neck. Neither Renai nor her husband doubt her sanity, a convention of these movies. She’s seeing bloody handprints on her comatose son’s sheets and little boys dressed in 1920s clothes in her kid’s closet. She knows something’s up. Josh is oddly tuned-out. The best horror movies get the audience talking back to the screen, and “Insidious” does that, and how. You’ll have to fight the urge to yell “Don’t go in there” or

Dressing like a Stallone cold man SHELISA MELENDEZ

Kernel columnist

Both Rocky Balboa and Rambo might be invading a closet near you. Sylvester Stallone is officially jumping into the world of fashion without holding any punches or ammo. Inspired by his wellknown characters, Rocky and Rambo, “Stallone” will offer threads for both the good and bad guys; tempting I know. Although I have never watched Rambo (guilty as charged), from the clips I’ve seen, there is no doubt in my mind that Rambo was nothing short of a hardcore bad a**. I mean the sweaty hair, bandana, guns, muscles – very much of a man’s man. And then there’s Rocky Balboa; now that series I did in fact watch intensely. Rocky’s character seemed to be more softhearted. I mean who doesn’t remember the gray sweat suit, silk boxer shorts, motivational words from Mickey, his dying love for Adrian and his famous run up the stairs leading to the Philadelphia Museum of Art? Cue “Rocky Theme.” Needless to say, while

both were “a man’s man” in their own right, they were also different in personality. The new “Stallone” clothing line will encapsulate two very different fashions and sex appeals, but I’m excited to see how the two mesh. “The line will offer looks ‘the rebel and gentleman’,” Michael Henry, president of newly formed Sly, Inc., said in a New York Daily News article. “Stallone” has been described as a “men’s lifestyle brand,” and according to a Time article, Sly (can I call him Sly?) says it will target men between the ages of 25 and 40 and sell the range in mid-tier department stores like Macy’s. “I want clothing that will be appropriate to my generation or the generation before,” Stallone said. According to a Women’s Wear Daily article, the first categories introduced in the line will be jeans, shirts, outerwear, underwear and watches, followed by eyewear,

grooming products, fragrance, active wear and athletic shoes (did you expect anything less?). Stallone mentioned in his interview with WWD, that he has been interested in exploring the fashion world, but hasn’t been ready to do so until now. He also said the first time he became “truly involved in style,” was between “Rambo 2” and “Rambo 3” when he experienced a huge weight change, dropping from 185 pounds to 160 pounds. It was then we he began buying custom-made clothes. “Nothing fit, so I started buying custom clothing,” Stallone said. “I found out I really like this world.” Despite his overall lack of experience within the fashion world, Stallone seems confident in the success of his new clothing line. “I really believe I have an understanding of the male psyche on all levels,” Stallone said. “I want to expose people to things that will work, and this is the apropos time. I’m not experienced in this field, but we have the proper team to move this vision along.” Both the “Stallone” clothing line and the sequel to the 2010 blockbuster “The Expendables” are due in 2012. Looks like a strong year ahead for ol’ Sly.

“Something just KICKED your front door in, DON’T turn off the alarm, you idiot!” Wan makes great use of silences and empty black space, furtive glances of something that the rational mind says should not be there. “Insidious” is a textbook piece of horror in that regard. It falls to Byrne to sell the reality of all this, and she does _ a woman paralyzed by fear, but made brave because she has to be. She’s a mother, after all. One can cast a jaundiced eye at Wan and Whannell’s role in the popularization of grim, soul-crushing “torture porn.” But their departure from it is fun and full of jolts. It’s PG-13 and nobody has to hack off their own anything. Nothing “Insidious” about that.

Bat Cats rebound from tough weekend with Tennessee Tech win By Ethan Levine sports@kykernel.com

It was a rough weekend for the UK baseball team as it took its show on the road for the first time in Southeastern Conference play. In Tuscaloosa, Ala., UK (15-11, 2-4 SEC) was swept by the Alabama Crimson Tide in its three-game series. It was the Cats’ first road trip in nearly a month after UK completed a 92 homestand in Lexington earlier this month, and some feared that the skid in Alabama would kill any momentum the team had built in recent weeks. Instead, the team remained poised and collected. “We weren’t thinking about having lost any momentum,” UK head coach Gary Henderson said. “We were just thinking about coming out and having a good day and trying to play well.” Tuesday, UK returned home to face off with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, and they looked like a team, at times, that hadn’t missed a beat since they left for Tuscaloosa. UK defeated Tennessee Tech by a score of 11-8 with strong pitching performances and consistent offense throughout the game. The Cats looked sharp in every aspect of the game early. They were able to hit for power, recording 3 extra base hits including a three-run home run by freshman Luke Maile and two doubles by senior Taylor Black. They were able to play small ball, going from first to third on singles and bunting with high efficiency. In one inning, Black and Thomas McCarthy, the heart of the Cats’ lineup, bunted for singles in back to back at bats. All in all, the Cats recorded 14 hits on the afternoon scoring their 11 runs, leaving an additional 11 runners stranded on base. “In the SEC a lot of pitchers throw it down in the strike zone and at your knees,” Black said, “but they left some balls up and we hit them hard. I think that’s the biggest thing. They didn’t really give us as many pitches to hit this weekend as they did today and we capitalized.” Freshman Corey Littrell started the game in his usual mid-week starting role for UK. He pitched three shutout in-

UK baseball player Luke Maile high-fives fellow players after scoring a run during Tuesday’s game against Tennessee Tech nings, allowing just two hits and striking out three, receiving his fourth win on the season. After Littrell, Henderson went deep into his bullpen on a chilly day. A combination of six UK relievers combined to complete the final six innings of the game. UK maintained Littrell’s shutout into the 7th inning when Jordan Cooper struggled on the mound, allowing five runs in the inning. All in all, the bullpen allowed all eight Tennessee Tech runs, but performed better than the stats might reveal. “In terms of pitching I thought the first six innings were outstanding,” Henderson said. “(Cooper) clearly wasn’t sharp but in his defense he had to get six outs, and that’s a tough task for anybody. He’s struggling a little bit right now but he will get it figured out.” Following the victory, the Cats will now head to Columbia, S.C., to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks, the de-

If UK wants to avoid a similar fate to Alabama, then they will have to put their last road trip behind them. “We just have to go out there and play our game and not fall into it’s on the road or we’re not very good on the road,” Black said. “We just have to go out there and play our game and make sure we try to get some wins and score some runs.”

Strengthening the bond Cats closer, ‘not satisfied’ with Final Four By Chandler Howard choward@kykernel.com

Though members of the UK basketball team have been close to one another since early this season, it took greater success for the teammates to truly trust each other. “From the beginning, we’ve all been cool with each other,” freshman Brandon Knight said. “But we started to trust each other over the past couple of months, especially this last month. We really had to pull together as a team to go into battle.” Knight said the newfound reliance within the team began in practice, when players started holding one another accountable and not letting each other down. As one of those leaders responsible for making sure others are doing what they need to do, Knight has come into his own this season. “Each day, I’m just trying to find a way to get better,” Knight said. “From beginning to end, each day everyone tried to find what they could do to get better. (UK head coach John Calipari) just did his best to push each and every one of us.” Knight said the area in which he feels most improved is in his ability to run the team. “When I got here, I didn’t have everything I needed to do as far as being a leader,” he said. “Being vocal, stuff like that. I’ve been able to mature in that area.” Junior DeAndre Liggins, who has also stepped up in late-game situations, especially against North Carolina in UK’s Elite Eight victory, said Knight, who he credits to be a harder worker than himself, boasts intelligence as his greatest attribute. “I just like to be around him no matter how he is play-

At the end of the game, he always makes the big plays to win.” Liggins will be primarily responsible for guarding Connecticut standout junior Kemba Walker in Saturday’s Final Four matchup. Walker scored 29 when UK met the Huskies in the Maui Tournament to begin the 2010-11 season. He averages 23.9. “I have to try to contest all of his shots,” Liggins said of slowing down Walker. “The first time we played, we’d played three games in three days, so I was kind of worn down. I had no legs. “He’s real tough. My job is just make it hard for him, to contain him … If he shoots 25 shots and he makes them, oh well. He’s going to score his points, he’s going to do what he do. Our job is to stop other guys, too.” One player who has fallen

under criticism as of late is freshman Terrence Jones, whose scoring blossomed early in the year but has decreased as of late. “He’s accepted (receiving less touches) fine,” Knight said. “He’s doing whatever it takes for our team to win. He didn’t mind stepping back a little bit, allowing the older players to become more aggressive, he was fine with that. That just shows what type of person and player he is; unselfish.” But for players and fans alike, the magnitude of UK returning to the Final Four for the first time in 13 seasons hasn’t “sunk in” just yet. “We’re still just kind of in the moment right now,” Knight said. “We’re not really satisfied with the Final Four. We know (fans) are happy about it, but we just want to keep going.”
