UK reflects on an unlikely year By Aaron Smith asmith@kykernel.com

HOUSTON — Everything in the postgame locker room had the mark of a season-ending loss to it. Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones both sat with their heads in their hands once interviews were over. DeAndre Liggins stared blankly at his name tag for his soon-to-be-empty locker. Josh Harrellson stood in the corner, still with tears in his eyes, choking up when he talked about his teammates or his time at UK. “Nothing hurts like this,” said Harrellson, after UK’s 56-55 Final Four loss to Connecticut. “My last time putting on a Kentucky uniform. It’s harsh and it hurts. But I never dreamed of being in this position, so I’m happy.” The dream for a national

championship had ended, and Liggins was still dealing with missing the last-second shot that could have won the game. He second-guessed it, saying he should have drove. He paused mid-sentence during his explanation, gathering his thoughts. Everyone, including himself, said it was a good, clean shot. But he still looked like he was carrying the weight of that miss, and the loss, through the locker room. “It’s going to be tough to swallow for a couple days,” Liggins said. “We had so many doubters. If we could have won this, oh man. It would have been a dream come true.” Getting to the Final Four was an enchanted run by itself. Nobody expected it. The party that wasn’t By Gary Hermann news@kykernel.com

For the first time in 13 years, the people of Lexington were ready to party like it was 1998. When Virginia Commonwealth and Butler tipped off Saturday, several bars on South Limestone had lines from the front door to the street. People began showing up at Two Keys Tavern at 10

a.m. “It’s important to come here because there are so many people here for the same reason,” agriculture communication senior William Edmiston said. “There are a lot of people you wouldn’t normally talk to that you can start a conversation with.” Medical student Alex Blandford proudly wore blue and white striped overalls at

Two Keys. “The outfit is to support our team,” Blandford said. “We’re trying to get as wild and crazy as we can.” Art studio senior Tommy Shelburne got to Two Keys at 2 p.m. and was trying to enjoy every second of his last NCAA Tournament as a UK student. “I want to celebrate like it’s my last,” Shelburne said, See LIMESTONE on page 2

HOUSTON — Brandon Knight, twice the hero for UK in the NCAA Tournament with gamewinning shots, was struggling on the biggest stage S a t u r d a y. His statline was nightNICK marish, a CRADDOK paltry 5-of22 from the Kernel columnist floor with 16 seconds remaining in the game. Yet despite all Knight’s missed shots — which Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun refers to as “expensive points” — no shot was as costly as UK junior guard DeAndre Liggins’ missed potential game-winning 3-point at-

tempt with around five seconds to play and the Cats trailing 54-52. “I took the shot with confidence, and I thought I was making it; that’s the most important thing to Coach Cal(ipari),” said Liggins in the locker room, still only minutes removed from a stinging 56-55 loss to UConn in the Final Four. “I was under the rim and it looked good,” UK senior forward Josh Harrellson said of Liggins’ shot. “I was happy for him to take that shot.” However, that one missed shot, which Liggins said had “good arc” but was one that he “babied,” wasn’t an isolated incident. It was representative of the whole story in this national semifinal. In fact, much like last year’s Elite Eight game See BBALL on page 4

ROTC rides in style Helicopter flies top cadets to training exercise By Drew Teague news@kykernel.com

Two military aircrafts landed on the Main Building Lawn Friday to help out a UK program. UK’s Army ROTC was heading to a joint military exercise on Friday, and officials in the program got the Army National Guard to give the top 20 cadets a lift in two Black Hawk helicopters. UK Army ROTC program, said the top 20 cadets came from the Order of Merit List, which is determined by grades, performance in physical training and participation in the program. He said they earned the right to be taken to the base by helicopter. Others were transported to the base by bus. “This weekend we (had) our field training exercise,” Orr said. “In the spring we do it jointly with the University of Louisville. We do it at the Harold Disney Training Center, out in Barborville, Ky.” Orr said this is not a side of the Army most cadets see while in the ROTC program

Why ‘Friday’ is stuck in your head LOS ANGELES — When responses such as “abomination” and “worst song ever” are the most printable comments about a hit record like Rebecca Black's “Friday,” you know it’s fully entered the realm of pop phenomenon. But for anyone who’s surprised that this simple ditty has connected in a big way — the 13-year-old’s relentlessly chipper YouTube video is about to cross the threshold of 66 million hits — don’t be. Patrice Wilson, the entrepreneurial musician who wrote and produced Black’s record and created the video that quickly went viral, has been both praised as a pop genius and villified as the worst sort of exploiter of youthful dreams for charging Black and her family $2,000 for the whole package. But if nothing else, this tune demonstrates unequivocal songwriting savvy: He tapped a song structure that’s embedded in our collective DNA, one that’s been the foundation of dozens, even hundreds of hit records over the last half a century. “Friday,” you see, is “Heart and Soul” revisited. It uses that fundamental fourchord progression almost anyone who’s ever touched a piano keyboard has learned. It’s the basis of the mostplayed pop radio hit of all time, the Righteous Brothers' “Unchained Melody.” It’s the same progression that Sam Cooke used in “You Send Me.” And “Chain Gang.” And “Twistin’ The Night Away.” It’s also the cornerstone of the Penguins’ “Earth Angel” from 1955, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers’ 1956 classic “Why Do Fools Fall In Love,” Skip & Flip’s 1960 hit “Cherry Pie” and countless other doo-wop, R&B, pop and rock hits that

surfaced in the 1950s and ‘60s before a couple of fellows from Liverpool came along and knocked down the fences hemming in pop music's structural vocabulary. And even the Beatles weren’t immune to its pull: Ringo Starr's contribution to the “Abbey Road” album, “Octopus's Garden,” used the same formula. It’s resurfaced regularly since sometimes with just the slightest variations in the chorus to Don McLean's 1972 anthem “American Pie,” in Alicia Keys’ 2007 megahit “No One,” and we’ve heard it somewhere in nearly every season of “American Idol.” Wilson surely knows how easy it is to apply the simplest of melodies over that sure-fire progression, and that’s exactly what he did for Black, giving her a lead line that requires the barest minimum of a vocal range to handle.

“Even those who abhor ‘Friday,’ — and there are plenty of them — will probably have to confess that they have a hard time getting it out of their heads. It’s stuck there for a good reason.” You can sing a single note over this progression which is what Black does with her limited voice for most of the song, and it still sounds musical. It spans hardly more than half an octave. Anyone can sing this in the shower and millions un-

doubtedly have been of late. It’s also easy to play on any keyboard or guitar. Thousands of songs have been written using the basic three-chord blues progression, in musical terms referred to as the I-IV-V progression, based on the spot on the conventional Western musical scale where you’ll find the root notes of each of those chords. The reason it’s so ubiquitous is because of the palpable sense of resolution created when the progression returns to that home chord. Celebrated country songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined a great song as one consisting of “three chords and the truth,” a phrase Bono latched onto in one of U2’s most celebrated songs. Howard, the composer of thousands of songs, showed how successful that combination could be on a red, white, blue, yellow or black guitar. The “Heart and Soul”/”Friday” variation on that progression simply drops a minor chord into the mix after the opening major chord, an addition that creates an extra measure of tension and drama that heightens the roundingthird-and-coming-into-home feeling of satisfaction when the entire I-vi-IV-V chord cycle finishes. The triangle becomes a self-contained, geometrically perfect square. Lyrically speaking, “Friday” carries the illusion of simplicity in giving voice to one teenager's big dilemma: whether to kick it with her friends in the front seat or the back seat. Even those who abhor “Friday” — and there are plenty of them — will probably have to confess that they have a hard time getting it out of their heads. It’s stuck there for good reason. MCT

“because it is.” Shelburne was wearing a pair of jorts — jean shorts, popularized by UK’s No. 55, Josh Harrellson — and said he would do anything, even trade his soul, if it meant UK would win a championship. “This is the biggest thing ever to me,” Shelburne said. “I cut off the legs of my $100 jeans.” Shelburne said he loved everyone inside Two Keys and considered them all to be his family. Hugh Jass Burgers general manager John Sanders said the first customers arrived around noon, and the restaurant was full by 1 p.m.; yet, many chose to wait in the long line to get inside anyway. “They won’t get in,” Sanders said. Art education freshman Lauren Burch waited for more than an hour to get into Hugh Jass Burgers. “After the game it will be crazy — win or lose,” Burch said. “If you win, party hard; if you lose, party harder.” After the game, police were in position with riot gear, but the Big Blue Nation did not pour onto South Limestone to celebrate. Some cried, and others vented, but no large crowds gathered in the street. Business graduate student

Steven Jesse arrived at Two Keys Tavern at 11 a.m. and did not regret his decision to arrive that early.

“You can’t beat the Big Blue Nation,” Jesse said. “If you, six months ago, said we would make the Final Four, everybody would be happy.” Geology junior Jordan Dorough arrived at the Paddock at 5 p.m. and said the main difference between watching a game in a bar as opposed to at home was “more shoving.” “Before we lost, it was

awesome,” Dorough said. “Everyone was amped.” Kinesiology senior and UK hockey player Jay Morgan went with his friends to Two Keys immediately after the game to avoid the “one in, one out” crowds. “It’s really glum right now,” Morgan said after the loss. “Everyone is not too happy. It’s way different than last week.” Morgan referred to UK’s win over North Carolina last Sunday, after which crowds flooded the streets to celebrate. Lexington Police Lt. David Marcum said the area with the highest concentration of people fluctuated after the loss, as people began to leave the Limestone area. Marcum said the total number of arrests and number of couches burned for the night is not yet known.

You talk, play sports like a girl

CARTOON BY KENTUCKY KERNEL | STAFF

Fans react to the UK men’s basketball team’s success in the NCAA tournament.

I am a woman, dreaming of working in the sports field. The excitement of a big game, the different opinions and thoughts people share and the big upsets are a natural high. Yes, it is just as exciting to a girl as it is to a guy. Growing up, I was always talking and arguing with the guys about sports. Most were impressed that I actually knew what I was talking about and that I wasn’t just choosing a team because of its mascot or colors. Telling a guy that I hope to land a ALYSSA RADLINGER job on the sports field, I usually get the same reaction: “You’re jokGuest ing, right?” or “What do you know columnist about sports?!” Really, though, if most guys opened up about sports to girls, I am sure it could be another thing they had in common. Some guys get heated when it comes to their opinions about sports, which is completely fine. The passion and love/hate relationship they have with teams and players is exactly what I go through when I am watching sports. While most girls are watching Oxygen or Bravo, I am sitting in my living room watching “Pardon The Interruption” or ESPNClassic. The fact that ESPN, FOX Sports and many other programs are introducing new woman announcers is giving

me even more hope that I can make it. When I began college three years ago, Erin Andrews was a big name at ESPN, and I couldn’t help but want to do exactly what she is doing. She knows what she is talking about, and has the perfect voice to make you want to listen. Her looks may be a big part of her fame, but the mere fact that she knows just as much as — if not more than — many guys out there says a lot. She gives me hope that it is possible to pursue a career in sports and that it is OK to enjoy sports, just like the guys do. She has spunk, an appealing voice and knowledge about the subject. She was one of the first women to get millions of guys’ attention by talking about sports, and that is something that amazes me. She has worked very hard to be where she is, and I hope to follow in her footsteps some day. Because of her popularity, I believe that many more girls are pursuing careers in sports, and the competition is bittersweet to me. I will finally have other girls to converse with. The inspiration I live by is to never give up, do not listen to what other people say about your dreams and do not be afraid to go above and beyond. One of the best feelings is proving others wrong, and anything is possible. Girls will continue to get involved in sports, whether men like it or not. Come on boys. Exactly what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it? Alyssa Radlinger is a journalism junior. Email opinions@kykernel.com.

Payback Cats fall short of a trip to the title game By Aaron Smith sports@kykernel.com

HOUSTON — Brandon Knight hit a buzzer-beating three, but this time it wasn’t for the win, and it wasn’t for the tie. Instead, it could only cut a Connecticut lead from four to one, a final score of 56-55 that left UK just short of going to the National Championship game. “The game was pretty much over, whether I missed it or made it,” Knight said. “It just goes like that sometimes.” UK had a chance to take the lead at the end after Knight stole the ball and gained possession with 16.6 seconds left, down two points. Coming out of a timeout, UK called a pick-and-roll for Brandon Knight, but he

CADETS Continued from page 1 at UK, but its goal is to show cadets their options in the Army. “It should excite them not only about their future as Army officers, but what the potential has for that future as leaders in the Army,” Orr said. “This is just one way to show (the cadets) the Army’s aviation side of the house. It’s our job to give them at least some type of knowledge on what all those options are, so it can help make up their minds. “The aviators inside the aircraft are proficient in their skills — they came last week

REFLECTS Continued from page 1 off midseason, and sometimes not even their own fans, as Harrellson recalled. “Even our own fans doubted me and doubted our team, looking on to next year,” Harrellson said. UK rode the “nobody believes in us” mentality to wins over Ohio State and North Carolina. Even when they were favored by Las Vegas and by many experts, John Calipari still tried to maintain it by saying everybody was picking against UK. That thought process, of going up against the world, fueled UK. “It was a great year,” said Jones, who was visibly shaking during interviews. “All the people that didn’t believe we couldn’t make it this far, always picking us to lose every game this whole tour-

didn’t have a lane to drive or space to shoot. He passed to DeAndre Liggins — who was 1 for 6 on the day at that point — to take a three-point shot. “I should have drove it,” said Liggins. “But I thought I had a little bit of the hot hand.” The shot clanged off the front rim, which was precisely how the night had gone for UK. UK shot 12-for-35 from two (34.3 percent), 9-for-27 from three (33.3 percent), and 4-for-12 from the free-throw line (33.3 percent, a season low and a number ESPN calculated would happen 7 in 1000 attempts with this team). Terrence Jones noted that UK had wide open shots for Darius Miller, Knight and Liggins, shots that are “dangerous for any team.” But the shots — shots that would nor-

mally fall down for UK, one of the best shooting teams in the country — didn’t fall. The poor shooting in the first half, especially, created a 10-point deficit at the half. Everyone on the team admitted they were tight at the start of the game. “I guess we weren’t expecting everything that goes on with the Final Four, all the pressure and everything,” said Josh Harrellson, who said the nerves started showing right after the tip. “We just came out and let it get to us.” For the three veterans, the same ones who had propelled UK to this unlikely Final Four berth, it was a nightlong struggle. Miller and Liggins both finished 1-for-7. The players who played well were Doron Lamb, who finished with 13 points — “I

told him for three days he was going to have a big game,” UK head coach John Calipari said. “I just felt it.” — and Jones, who had been flying under the radar the entire postseason. He finished with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 15 rebounds, although even he had a fatal flaw — 0-for-5 free throws. “We couldn’t make shots,” said Knight, who finished with 17 points. The Cats had a stretch where they could at the beginning of the second half, rattling off four straight 3pointers — the only ones UK would make all game — to tie up the game inside seven minutes. But at the end of the game, UK started settling for jumpers. Legs looked tired. “I felt like the shots we

and surveyed the landing zone out there, and they know exactly how to come in.” Captain Stephen Martin, a member of Kentucky National Guard’s Bravo Company 2147 Aviation out of Frankfort, agreed with Orr, saying everything for Friday’s landing was planned out in advance. “We had a good plan,” Martin said. “Obviously, flying into downtown Lexington with all the trees and everything, we take it slow and make sure we do everything safe.” The Black Hawks landed just after 10 a.m., intriguing passers-by as it took more than 10 minutes to completely shut down the helicopters

after touchdown. While cadets were waiting on the aircraft, they took pictures, as most had not seen a helicopter up close. Once the helicopters were shut down, the cadets were able to approach the vehicle and got a 40-minute crash course on safety in the aircraft they would travel in for the next hour. Martin said it was great to be able to help the ROTC program and give the cadets a new experience. “It was an experience, it’s cool,” Martin said. “This is a cool Friday to be able to come in and land on UK’s campus, because a lot of times we only do our training areas, supporting the troops.

Getting to support the ROTC troops is fun.” Both Orr and Martin said the cadets do not get to do things like this often, so it was going to be an experience the cadets remember for a while. “These (cadets) don’t get much of an opportunity to do it,” Martin said. “We love supporting them as well and helping giving them their training and make it as realistic and raw as possible.” Just before 11 a.m., the cadets loaded onto the airPHOTO BY TIM HOLAHAN | STAFF crafts as they started back up. nament, just going out and proving them wrong together.” Together — that’s what was special about this team. It was a daily grind, to unify, to believe in themselves, to work for the team even as Calipari preached that it was a players-first program. “Everyone really wanted to come together and do something special, and I appreciate that,” Knight said. At the beginning of the season, UK was disjointed and individualized, perhaps none more so than Jones. But that improvement was what made Jones so proud. “A lot of guys pushed ourselves to be better teammates, be better on the floor,” Jones said. “A lot of guys made sacrifices to better the team. These are my brothers.” Jones among them. After shooting to the top of the National Player of the Year debate early, he started ceding

some of his shots to make the team more balanced. Harrellson practiced extra every day, in an attempt to maximize his last year at UK. Knight got out of his comfort zone, becoming a vocal, team-first point guard. Liggins, an admitted loner last year, wanted to “be around us more, and care,” Jones said. The finality of the loss was tough for the players, knowing it was the last time that specific group of players would be together, and that they fell just short of reaching their goal after accomplishing so much. The players — the brothers — felt the worst for Harrellson after the game. The lone senior had finally met the game that was his last in a UK uniform. “But I’m not going to wash my uniform,” Harrellson said. “It’s going to hang up like this. Final Four logo on it and everything.”

We had so many doubters. If we had won this, oh man. It would have been a dream come true.” DEANDRE LIGGINS

BBALL Continued from page 1 against West Virginia in which the Cats started by missing their first 20 3-pointers, UK was shot out of the stadium with a 33.9 percent field goal percentage compared to UConn’s 46.9 percent field goal percentage. And so it goes. Another case of an untimely shooting night when an untimely shooting night was the last thing UK could afford to have happen. “When (basketball season) ends, you fall off a cliff just then,” UK head coach John Calipari said. “You know it, you fall off a cliff, it’s over.” Worse yet, unlike the season-ending loss to West Virginia last season, the Cats still had a realistic chance to advance to the title game despite the basket seemingly shrinking to pea-size dimensions. The Cats’ 21 first-half points were the lowest output in a half since the 22 they scored against Tennessee on

Junior guard

March 6. The Cats’ total of 55 points was the lowest all season and the lowest since a Billy Gillispie-led UK team lost 60-53 to Florida in March 2009. Zero offense, yet one chance to win remained at the end. Some may argue that the result may have changed had Liggins, a defensive stopper by nature, not taken the shot. The play wasn’t designed for Liggins, but rather for Knight to take the shot — the last alternative was to find someone to take it — yet it probably wouldn’t matter if Knight took the shot. Calipari said Knight had tired legs. Shooting is all in the legs, preferably a fresh pair. And you can’t blame Knight for passing the shot up, because without his two previous game-winners, UK doesn’t advance to the Final Four. “I should have drove it,” said a second-guessing Liggins. “But I hit a three and I got fouled and I made a shot and I thought I had the hot hand a little bit.” And you can’t blame Lig-

gins for not second-guessing his first instinct to launch the shot. “He was the one who gave us a chance to win,” UK junior Darius Miller said of Liggins and the four straight points he had scored to cut the Huskies’ lead to two. “It’s definitely not his fault.” Sometimes the easiest explanation for what went wrong is the one that is most obvious. “I just think we missed a bunch of open shots,” Harrellson said. For a team that’s been so good at hitting a “bunch of open shots” all season, spotty shooting was the bittersweet difference in this game. In the game of basketball, it’s sometimes hard to comprehend how mere inches — a hair — can either send a team into euphoria or send a team packing. But the best basketball players learn to live by that calculus. “It is what it is. I shot it, and I missed,” Liggins said. UK will have to bide some time to shoot the next one.

shot looked (like we were tired),” Jones said. “I don’t know. I respect everbody’s decision when to shoot, though. But I think we were a little tired and didn’t fight to get to the rim those last four minutes.” Two of those were by Knight, whose shots kept clanging off the front of the rim, barely off the mark, as they were almost the entire game. He air-balled one, and if that wasn’t his only one of the season, it was an extreme rarity. He finished what Jim Calhoun called an “expensive” 6-for-23 to get those teamhigh 17 points, and Calipari noted that the magnitude of the game may have gotten to his even-keeled freshman. “I could say (it’s just an-

other game) all I wanted,” Calipari said. “But there’s some anxiety that goes along with this game that may have gotten to him a little bit. The inefficiency was amplified by the volume. Knight took 23 shots, more than double that of any two of his teammates combined. The same happened with Connecticut’s star, Kemba Walker, who finished with 18 points — although some of those came from free throws earned by getting “Michael Jordan calls,” as Liggins put it. So UK held Walker relatively in check, and held Connecticut as a team to a low value. Before the game, Calipari told his players that 56 was the target number to hold Connecticut to. UK did just that. “I just didn’t think we would score 55,” Calipari said.
