It’s a chance to work with coaches, players 4 UK HealthCare continues partnership with Kentucky Speedway UK HealthCare annouced in a release Friday that it will continue as Kentucky Speedway’s official medical provider through 2014. UK HealthCare staff have partnered with the speedway’s safety team to provide fan and driver care since the track opened in 2000. NBA lockout could bring former Cats back to campus After the NBA lockout began on July 1, John Calipari officially extended an invitation to any former Cat to come back to Lexington. The lockout prohibits NBA players from using team facilities, meaning they will be looking for other places to work out. That could include the Joe Craft Center. “I reached out to every former Wildcat that’s in the NBA dealing with this lockout to tell them our facility is available to train if needed,” Calipari tweeted. “If they want to finish up some school work while in Lexington, we will help with that as well. We just want to make sure all our players know that it’s all about family here at UK. #WeAreUK #LaFamilia.” Players could, conceivably, be student assistants and practice with the team. But to do so, they would have to be full-time students, and Calipari wrote back in May that he didn’t expect many to take that route.

Below: A view from the inside of the new office, currently under construction, shows its three rooms — Todd’s office, an assistant’s office and a conference room.

Former President Lee Todd’s new office will cost almost as much as one year of his salary when he returns to UK as an electrical engineering professor. Todd’s new office will cost $143,828.10, according to documents obtained by the Kernel through an open records request. According to Todd’s employment agreement, he will make the same as the highest paid full tenured professor in the College of Engineering, which is currently about $162,000. His new office will be located in the Advanced Science and Technology Commercialization Center Building, said Jay Blanton, UK public relations and executive marketing director. Construction has begun on the office, but Blanton was unsure how long it would take to complete. Blanton said the office was primarily chosen for location. By being located in

the ASTeCC, the office allows Todd to work closer with people in areas he is interested in, like commercialization, Blanton said. The high cost for Todd’s new office comes from having to renovate a current conference room into three smaller rooms — a new office for Todd, an assistant’s office and a smaller conference room, Blanton said. The conference room would allow Todd to meet with people from different organizations, such as those working on science, technology, engineering and mathematics efforts, Blanton said. “Given (Todd’s) longstanding interest and expertise in economic development, space in our commercialization center is appropriate,” UK Board of Trustees Chair Britt Brockman said in a statement released to the Kernel. In the statement, Brockman said the Board was not involved in the details of

how the space was configured, and “the space will be utilized for a long time to come.” According to the renovation records obtained by the Kernel, the costs for the office are: General construction contract: $86,515 ❏ Furniture: $41,443.29 ❏ Carpet: $5,625.81 ❏ Blinds: $1,213 ❏ Telephone/Computer wiring: $3,450 (estimate) ❏ Asbestos testing: $165.00 ❏ Design/project management: $3,466 (estimate) ❏ Stores markup: $550 (estimate) ❏ UK Waste tax: $1,400 (estimate) ❏

Blanton said the office will be paid for with lapsed funds for the past 2010-2011 See OFFICE on page 2

Commonwealth Stadium installing 15th-largest scoreboards in college football Construction is underway on a new highdefinition video and sound system at Commonwealth Stadium. The two scoreboards at the end of each end zone are being replaced by a Daktronics HD-X scoreboard, according to UK Athletics. Fourteen digital ribbon boards will also be installed around the perimeter of the seating bowl in addition to a new sound system. The replacements will give UK the 15th-largest scoreboards in college football. UK Athletics said the renovations are expected to be complete before the first home football game against Central Michigan Sept. 10. The additions will cost close to $6 million, UK Athletics said. Gatton could get new dean this fall By Joy Priest jpriest@kykernel.com

A replacement for President Lee Todd wasn’t the only search underway during UK’s 2010 fiscal year. After announcing last November that a new dean of the Gatton College of Business and Economics was needed, UK officially began the process in February. Devanathan Sudharshan, who stepped down on July 1 after eight years as dean of the college, will remain as faculty. Dan Brass, who is co-chairing the Dean Search Committee along with Dean David Brennan

of the UK College of Law, said in an email to the Kernel Tuesday afternoon that the committee had “narrowed the field further” after “airport” interviews with a selected group of candidates were conducted on June 27 and 28 in Cincinnati. Brass said the field had been reduced from a group 75 applicants that executive search firm Witt/Kieffer coordinated. “With the help of Witt/Kieffer ... we will now begin extensive reference checks on those remaining candidates before forwarding our recommendations to the provost,” Brass said in an email that originally went out to

UK faculty last week. “The provost will then invite selected candidates for early-fall, on-campus interviews where you will have the chance to meet them and provide feedback.” In the meantime, Merl Hackbart, who is usually the associate dean of Gatton, stepped up to assist the transition as interim dean on May 15. The interim dean’s duties have included working with other colleges on campus and the external community, basically the same duties as the permanent dean, Hackbart said. “It’s important to continue to enhance our programs, provide

good opportunities to students, make sure our education is state of the art, have good relations with the community and continue to build our regional and national reputation,” Hackbart said, “and also I want to see us continue the Top 20 goal.” Hackbart, who is not involved in the dean search, had previously mentioned funding for a new building for the Gatton College as imperative to the Top 20 goal set forth by Todd during his tenure as president. OFFICE Continued from page 1 fiscal year. The funds come from both the UK Office of Commercialization and Economic Development and the university’s central administration. “(It’s) not as if another project went undone,” Blanton said. Joe Peek, professor in the UK School of Management in the Gatton College of Business and Economics and member of the UK Board of Trustees, disagrees. “But that is still real money that could have been used for other worthwhile purposes,” Peek said in an email to the Kernel. Peek, in a phone interview, said that as Todd transitions from his role as president to faculty expenses are expected, but the projected cost totals a lot of money.

“It looks like no one was overly concerned about cost,” Peek said. He said it appears that whoever approved the office did so with the idea that the money spent wouldn’t come out of his pocket. “It still isn’t ‘free money,’” Peek said in an email. From a faculty perspective, Peek said it can be a sore point when previous administrators return to the university as faculty and are treated differently. He said the office’s costs might be associated with Todd wanting to uphold a certain image as the ex-president of the university. Peek said the cost will not be zero when bringing new faculty to the university, but it looks to him like UK “went to the high bidder, not the low bidder.” “I don’t know what the right number is,” Peek said, “but I’m pretty sure $144,000 is not the right number.”

Final Potter movie ties loose ends The finale to the Harry Potter saga is, like most of the films in the series, a bit of a slog. But it’s a generally satisfying slog; two hours of wrapping up loose ends, saying fond, if not exactly tearful farewells and Harry facing his destiny opposite “You Know Who.” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” is all deadly serious stuff. Harry’s dogged pursuit of the Horcruxes, the evil talismans that give Lord Voldemort his power. As such, it’s a good half hour before we get a laugh, with only three or four more in the last 90 minutes. But we’re here to see Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) meet his fate, not to hear Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) beat off evil wizards attacking Hermione (Emma Watson) with “That’s my GIRLFRIEND.” Harry is being hunted by Voldemort, so he decides the best defense is a good offense. He will track down Voldemort’s Horcruxes and progressively weaken the dark lord as he does. Harry makes a deal with a goblin, raids the bank vault of Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) in a scene designed to inspire a theme park ride and makes an escape on the back of a dragon (another theme park ride). Voldemort rallies his minions and launches an all-out assault on Hogwarts. Director David Yates, the British TV vet entrusted with the last of the Potter pictures, makes this a whispered movie of quiet closeups, which is what television is: a close-up medium. This allows the actors to act, and many from Fiennes, who finally registers underneath that Voldemort mask, to Alan Rickman as Severus Snape and especially Maggie Smith (looking 20 years younger) really deliver. The film tries to bring in most every actor who has popped up in the series a veritable checklist for fans.

Horoscope To get the advantage, check the day's rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0 the most challenging. Aries (March 21-April 19) — Today is a 9 — A sudden development reveals hidden resources. Dive into a hefty assignment, and rewards will exceed expectations. Kick back for a quiet evening to rejuvenate. Taurus (April 20-May 20) — Today is an 8 — Start planning your escape. Look for strength in your reserves. Here's your mantra for today: "I can have anything I'm willing to stand for." You're very attractive now. Gemini (May 21-June 21) — Today is an 8 — You're focused on moving forward in career and community. A distant development changes the score. Negative inner conversations could distract. Turn the volume down with self-kindness. Cancer (June 22-July 22) —

But with Emma Thompson here for a single one line scene and her fellow Oscar winner Jim Broadbent used as set dressing, that’s a little frustrating. It’s nice to see the ancient John Hurt, as Olivander, the wand merchant, give Harry the bad news. “He is after you Mr. Potter. I am afraid you don't stand a chance.” The newcomer here is the great Ciaran Hinds, playing the late headmaster Dumbledore’s estranged brother. “Do yourself a favor, boy,” he growls. “Go home. Live a little longer.” But Harry won’t, and with the stoic Ron and plucky Hermione by his side, he does those things that made him beloved the world over. He perseveres. He displays compassion. He risks his life for others. The boy wizard has made a great hero. The script is the usual cacophony of odd names, odd props and odder spells. Fiennes has a habit of turning his point-with-his-wand moments into something that sounds like Homer Simpson after a bender. “Fizzzrrrrrwowwowww” he slurs, and some vassal or other explodes in a puff of digital ether. Still, it’s worth the price of admission to hear Fiennes’ take on what Voldemort’s giggle would sound like. This isn’t one of the best films of the series, more like a comfortable mid-level one, rather like the “Lord of the Rings” finale. It’s convoluted. It’s overly complicated. But though disorderly and lacking emotional punch, “Hallows” still wraps up in decent enough fashion. It gives us chases, fights and moments with our heroes. And the real magic of the Radcliffe, Watson and Grint performances is that over a decade and eight long films, they soldiered on and made us want to as well. That’s quite a trick.

Today is an 8 — Folks seem to be getting along, and business is going well. Dance with any surprises to keep the balance. Someone questions judgment, so make sure they feel heard. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — Today is an 8 — Give something up and gain a bigger prize. There's money coming in, and you may be tempted to be impulsive. Share your love freely, but keep your wallet in your pocket. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) — Today is a 6 — Whenever there's romance, there's also the fear of losing it. Risk it all and live passionately, or play it safe and lonely. Dare to be charming, like only you know how. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) — Today is a 6 — You may find it easier to just stay home and get organized. Find what you need in your own closet or attic. Discover forgotten gems. A quiet evening refreshes. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — Today is a 7 — Explore your neighborhood for treasures ... they're closer than they seem. Take a stroll under the full

moon and breathe fresh air. No need to venture far. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — Today is an 8 — You make a good teacher now. There are new opportunities for income, but don't waste what you have. Benefit from the generosity of another, and pay it forward. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Today is an 8 — Think before you move, but travel does look good now. Watch out for hidden potholes on the road, and give your card to folks as you go. You make an excellent connection. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — Today is a 5 — You may feel like you're getting nowhere, especially where relationships are concerned. Give it a rest and try again tomorrow, when conditions are more favorable. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Today is a 5 — Today you could fall off the horse. Is this going to keep you from riding? What you choose could determine future limitations. Climb back on and know you can do it. MCT

DEAN Continued from page 1 ton accounting and analytics double major, said Sudharshan had done a commendable job during his time at UK, but he would like to see a commitment from the new dean to strengthen relationships with companies looking to hire from within the college. “Our relationship with companies seems

to be weakening,” Omenyinma said. “Perhaps it’s a result of recent economic trends, but, whatever the reason, the number of companies I’ve seen building relations with Gatton, and recruiting at Business fairs from my freshman year until now, isn’t very encouraging.” Omenyinma said he hopes the new dean will see that Gatton and its students will benefit from addressing this issue. The search committee plans to have the new dean secured by early fall.

Google+ has potential, but can it be juggled with other sites? Google+ has become the new “it” thing to talk about. It’s the new social networking site that is allegedly poised to topple the giant that is Facebook. With a sleek user interface that is streamlined and as clean as an Apple Store, it is certainly pretty enough to compete in the virtual graveyard that are networking sites. It’s currently in the beta testing phase, with a AMANDA system of “invites” WALLACE allowing people to Contributing bring a few of their friends into the columnist Google+ fold. So is Google+ going to revolutionize the way we communicate between groups of friends? Will it spell the end to Facebook the way the bluemastheaded-one brought Myspace to its knees? Honestly, it was sort of a let down. I’m no tech maven, and my knowledge of computers is restricted to Microsoft Office and the Internet, but I think I’m a prime audience for social networking sites. My email, Facebook and Flickr are always open on my browser. I have what I will tell future employers is an “Internet presence.” The fact of the mat-

ter is, I don’t know what Google+ brings to the mix that other social networking sites don’t already have covered in a more intuitive format. It honestly seems like a lot of renaming to make it sound more interesting — much in the same way that Myspace tried to rebrand when it lost all of its users to Facebook. Is it pretty, yes? But at least in its beta testing face, it’s slow. The controls don’t make as much sense as Facebook, but granted, I am more familiar with Facebook. Adding people to your “circle,” is basically the same thing as adding people to your friends list with a strange combination of following famous people on Twitter. I think that’s my principle issue — Google+ isn’t so much a new thing as a love-child of other popular social media. Like something you see on Google+? You can +1 it. Enjoy celebrity minutiae? You can follow them on Google+. (Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook is already there.) Want to web-cam call a group of your friends, like you would on Skype? You can “start a hangout.” Combining different aspects of already popular social networking sites is not original, though I’m sure it makes good business sense. With the amount of hype and the selective environment that the “invites” bred, Google+ just feels like

more of the same. That isn’t to say it’s awful. Some features are definitely worth looking into. I love posting pictures online, and Google+ albums are fascinating to look at and easy to use, while Facebook’s photo technology seems to be taking a step backward. I love how you can look up YouTube videos on the actual page where you post them and pick from the videos you’ve already posted on your YouTube account. I like how you can post your pictures, statuses and all other content so that it will only be shown in certain peoples news feeds. And let’s face it — it is really pretty. That’s not the ultimate thing in technology, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Facebook is fairly streamlined. Google+ is like “2001: A Space Odyssey.” My final judgement is that I don’t have one. This could be the beginning of the end for Facebook, whose latest bit of tech-buzz (aside from leaking people’s personal information) is its integration with Skype. Or it could be like the Zune to the iPod — a laughable blip on the screen. With pretty much a lack of innovation, I’m not sure that anyone would care about Google+ if it wasn’t attached to that famous Google name. The fact of the matter remains, the first thing I did when I got my Google+ account was tell all my Facebook friends.

UK football engages women in daylong clinic By Camille Sigler sports@kykernel.com

Football isn’t just for the boys. Once a year, about 300 women in the central Kentucky area look forward to a full day of football. UK football head coach Joker Phillips, his staff and UK football players will host their annual women’s football clinic July 30 at Commonwealth Stadium. The clinic started back in 2002. Participants of the camp are given the oppurtunity to meet current football players and get autographs and pictures. They are also allowed on the field and in the locker room. Cullen said seeing behind the scenes was one of her favorite experiences from the clinic. Ellis said the UK football players and staff hope the ladies leave knowing more about the game and more excited about the sport than when they arrived. The women’s football clinic will be held July 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium. The cost of the clinic is $75, which includes a T-shirt, clinic gift and lunch. Pre-register for the clinic at ukathletics.com or register the day of the clinic at 8 a.m. at Commonwealth Stadium.
