inbrief UK HOOpS WInS AGAIn Sophomore forward Samarie Walker played her best night in a UK uniform helping lead the Cats to a 69-64 win Thursday night in Athens, Ga., against the No. 15/14 Georgia Bulldogs. This is the third consecutive win over a ranked opponent for the Cats (17-2, 6-0) and keeps them alone atop the SEC standings. “I am so pleased after six to be undefeated, with three of those coming on the road. We are in a good spot right now,” UK head coach Matthew Mitchell said on the UK IMG post game radio show. “We understand we are not the greatest team in the country yet. We have a chance to be and we have to work hard to get that done.” Walker, a UConn transfer, delivered 18 points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes of action for the Cats, helping the Cats win the rebounding battle 47-36 over the Bulldogs. “My teammates found a way to get me the ball — I was working for it,” Walker said during the radio show. Walker came into the game averaging 4.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in conference play. “It’s great to see Samarie rounding into shape. I think she can continue to improve and work hard to get better,” Mitchell said. “Surely tonight’s got to be a night that gives her some confidence.” Freshman guard Bria Goss rebounded from her season-low three point performance Sunday at South Carolina by leading the team with 22 points. Winning the rebounding battle was particularly important for the Cats Thursday, as their typical biggest weapon — the “40 Minutes of Dread” full-court press — was relatively ineffective. “One of the turning points was we got out of our full-court press. That was not good for us tonight,” Mitchell said. “Georgia was fantastic in the full-court press offense, we could not affect them at all.” STAFF REPORT

1. Defensive battle If there’s an SEC defense that can match UK’s in effectiveness, it’s Alabama (Roll Tide), which ranks first in the conference in scoring defense and second in field percentage defense. After playing up-tempo and free-flowing, UK will be forced into a grind-itout, half court game — AARON the type that has, on occaSMITH sion, given the Cats’ offense trouble. Kernel Alabama (Roll Tide) columnist gives opponents fits because it guards the entire court intensely. It’s above average in steals (forcing 7.1 per game) and blocks (4.6 per game), and exceptional at guarding the 3point line (opponents shoot 25.7 percent).
UK can gain an advantage using its own defense — which ranks No. 2 in scoring defense and No. 1 in field goal defense — against an average Alabama (Roll Tide) offense and on the boards. The Crimson Tide ranks in the bottom half of the conference in rebounding offense and defense. 2. Post play Anthony Davis has proved he has more than No. 1 draft pick potential — he’s producing at a No. 1 draft pick level right now. Against Alabama (Roll Tide), however, Davis will get to prove he’s getting stronger, as he’s said. The Crimson Tide are led by JaMychal Green, averaging 14.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, and Tony Mitchell, averaging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. If there’s been one type of player Davis hasn’t dominated this year, it’s been bulkier players who weren’t afraid to create
Tide rolls in
contact with Davis in the post. Green can do just that, looking to negate Davis’ blocking abilities by getting closer. It’s a move that seems paradoxical, but it’s the best chance opponents have of avoiding his reach. 3. Little more Lamb Arkansas was a good first step at getting out of a scoring slump for Doron Lamb. He scored 14 points and made two of four 3pointers. In the seven games before that, he had made six and had scored below his season average (now at 14 points per game) in all seven. Lamb is still UK’s leading scorer, and he makes UK a different team when he’s at his best. Recently, he hasn’t been — it’s why he has come off the bench three straight games after starting each of UK’s first 16 — but Lamb could re-emerge at any time. If he did Saturday, it could open up the scoring against Alabama (Roll Tide).

Band will ‘bring it back’ to Lexington KAYLA PICKRELL kpickrell@kykernel.com Many students may know Travis Porter by the popular song “Bring it Back,” and now they have a chance to see them live on campus. Travis Porter performs live on Friday at the UK Winter Concert at the Singletary Center. “I picked the Singletary Center because it is small enough to give an intimate feeling, yet have a large, if not sold out, turnout,” Jeremy Jones, owner and founder of Stand Out Agency, said. Stand Out Agency took on the task of bringing in Travis Porter and putting on the performance. “By bringing in Travis Porter to UK, I am trying to establish a better brand name with the people in Lexington,” Jones said, who is a winter 2011 graduate from UK.

Stand Out Agency grew last year when Jones would do the marketing for pool parties over the summer. Jones realized that marketing events could become a full business for him. Opening for Travis Porter is IanJ, an 18-year-old high school student from Louisville. IanJ has 28,000 plays on a single song, making him the best person to open for Travis Porter, Jones said. Other opening acts include Future Kidz, The Aviation, Jay King, Young Bravo, D.Eazy and Real Life Tae. To obtain VIP meet and greet passes with autographs and photographs is $100. The after party is planned to be at Forte Night Club on Euclid, with the attendance of Travis Porter. They will not be performing.

Terrence Jones shoots against Alabama in the semifinal round of the SEC Tournament at the Georgia Dome on March 12, 2011.
After a loss in Tuscaloosa to Vanderbilt, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide rolls to Lexington. The Tide (13-5, 2-2 SEC) brings a strong squad to Big Blue Nation. UK, coming off freshman forward Anthony Davis’ career game against Arkansas after scoring 27 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks, will compete against a defensive Crimson Tide squad that ranks No. 1 in opponent points per game in the SEC. Alabama junior forward Tony Mitchell averages 7.5 rebounds per game, which doesn’t quite contest Davis’ 10.4 rebounds per game and 13.8 points per game. Last year, Alabama beat UK 68-66 in Tuscaloosa. “They beat us in the paint, they beat us on the scoreboard, they beat us physically,” Calipari said, referencing that loss. “They beat us about a hundred different ways.” However, the Cats earned a GAME INFO split of last year’s series after deUK vs. Alabama feating the Crimson Tide in the date: Saturday SEC tournament 72-58. Still, location: Rupp Arena Calipari saw one thing in common between those games, some- time: 12 p.m. thing he expects to return Saturwhere to watch: CBS day. “When we play them, they are physical,” Calipari said. Despite sophomore guard Doron Lamb’s recent slump, Calipari said he has been improving in the past few games, and still averages a team-leading 14 points per game. With the influences of Terrence Jones’ improving injured finger and freshman point guard Marquis Teague’s better floor game, UK may be at full strength by the time the Tide rolls to Lexington. Alabama, meanwhile, may not be. It played a Thursday night game against Vanderbilt (a 69-59 loss) and must prepare for the short turnaround of a noon tip-off. Although Alabama is unranked, Calipari said it has potential to be a threatening opponent for the Cats. “It’s going to be a war,” Calipari said. “Alabama’s a Sweet 16 team in my mind.”

The Boss to release new album

LOS ANGELES — When Bruce Springsteen hits the concert trail on a world tour in May, he’ll have a new album’s worth of material to draw from in “Wrecking Ball,” a collection of 11 songs to be released March 6. Springsteen’s website runs down the titles from the New Jersey rocker’s 17th studio album, which was produced by Springsteen and Ron Aniello. An expanded edition also will be available with two extra tracks as well as more photos and artwork. The first single from the album is its lead-off track, “We Take Care of Our Own.” The announcement makes no mention of the E Street Band, but the single features the backing of a band, indicating “Wrecking Ball” is not a solo acoustic Springsteen effort. “Bruce has dug down as deep as he can to come up with this vision of modern life,” said his manager, Jon Landau, who also is executive producer of the album, in a state-
ment posted on Springsteen’s website. “The lyrics tell a story you can’t hear anywhere else and the music is his most innovative in recent years. The writing is some of the best of his career and both veteran fans and those who are new to Bruce will find much to love on ‘Wrecking Ball.’” It will be Springsteen’s first recording, and tour, since the death last year of saxophonist Clarence “Big Man” Clemons, who died from complications from a massive stroke. Springsteen’s tour with the E Street Band opens May 13 in Seville, Spain, and the first leg to be announced includes 31 shows in 26 European cities. More dates including the United States are still to be detailed. Springsteen also will be a keynote speaker at this year’s South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin in March. MCT

Slow and steady does it. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Today is a 5 — Sometimes it's fine to hide away and be pensive. Today might be one of those days. Be mindful of what you say now so that you don't have to recant later. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — Today is a 7 — Avoid being too demanding in your relationships.
