The (actual) difference between someone scoring 10 points per game and 9.9 points per game is negligible, even though the (perceived) difference is vast. UK Hoops capitalized on turnovers to defeat the Auburn Tigers Thursday night in Auburn, Ala., 66-48. The No. 6 Cats moved to 8-0 in the SEC, a program-record start. They have also won a school-record 11 consecutive regular-season conference games and six consecutive road conference games. The Cats fell behind early 16-11, but reeled off a 18-0 run and went into the locker room up 31-20. The Tigers closed to within seven early in the second half at 33-26, but the Cats answered with an 11-0 run. The Tigers never got within single-digits again. “We have a very good basketball team. They played with a lot of confidence and poise tonight,” said UK head coach Matthew Mitchell in the UK/IMG postgame radio show. Auburn turned the ball over 30 times, leading to 38 points off turnovers for the Cats. A’dia Mathies scored a career-low two points against the Florida Gators on Sunday, but bounced back Thursday night, leading the Cats in scoring with 20 points. She also contributed four rebounds, three assists and a steal. The Cats won the rebounding battle 37-35, thanks largely to sophomore forward Samarie Walker’s career-high 15 boards. “It was a really good performance by Samarie tonight,” Mitchell said. Sophomore Maegan Conwright added 10 points for the Cats, connecting on five of her six shots from the field. “This was clearly her (Conwright’s) best game of the year tonight,” Mitchell said. The Cats (19-2, 8-0 SEC) return to Memorial Coliseum Sunday to play the Alabama Crimson Tide (10-11, 0-7 SEC) at 2 p.m. Reserved seat tickets for the game, which will be broadcast on Comcast/Charter Sports South, are sold out. Based upon availability, UK students, faculty and staff will be admitted free. UK Hoops will celebrate Alumni Day by recognizing the 1981-82 team at halftime. 3 things to watch: UK at LSU edition 1. It won’t be LeBron on the floor, right? LSU coach Trent Johnson had this to say when assessing Saturday’s opponent: “I don’t know if it’s Kentucky or the Miami Heat we have to play.” According to the schedule, it’s Kentucky, although Johnson’s remark pretty much sums up how opponents view UK. It has a talent, athleticism and size advantage over everyone else. AARON If UK can continue its gradual SMITH improvement and improve to 5-0 on the road, UK will retain its No. Kernel columnist 1 ranking. And no pre-game chalk toss needed. 2. Offensive output Two of UK’s five least-efficient games came on the road in the SEC, against Auburn and Georgia (the others: Louisville, Kansas and Old Dominion). And LSU won’t be much easier than the other SEC opponents. The Tigers rank third in the SEC in scoring defense (61.5 points per game) and fourth in field goal percentage defense (40 percent). UK stalled against Georgia in the second half, scoring 19 points. It doesn’t want that to happen again — although even if it does, UK might be fine anyway. LSU is another good-defense, bad-offense team, the type that UK has seemingly encountered in every conference game to this point. The Tigers shoot just 40.6 percent on offense and don’t get to the free-throw line often. They take care of the basketball, ranking second in the SEC in turnover margin (plus-2.95), so it won’t be easy for UK to push the pace off turnovers. Given UK’s high-quality defense, this could be another relatively low-scoring game. 3. Post play If there’s one player who could give UK trouble, it will be Justin Hamilton. The 6-foot-11 center leads the team in scoring (13.9 points per game) and rebounds (7.4 per game). UK just came off beating Georgia, a severely undersized team with no true interior presence. LSU has one, and the onus will fall on Anthony Davis to match his physicality. It’s another good test for Davis as he continues to improve his play in the paint. 01.27.12 | weekend timeout | 5

The Muslim Student Association at UK brought speaker Abdel Rahman Murphy to speak about the misconceptions of Islam on Thursday night at the Student Center. Murphy touched on the most popular misconceptions about the faith and gave specific examples of how both Muslims and non-Muslims can help eliminate them. “You should not judge a faith by its practitioner,” Murphy said. The event was held in the Grand Ballroom, where dinner was served as well, and the MSA had a full house. There were first-generation Muslims wearing their traditional hijabs and kufis accompa-
nied by daughters and sons who had a more “Americanized” style, as well as non-Muslims. The speaker started out by welcoming the crowd with a traditional Arabic phrase “As-Salāmu `Alaykum,” translating to “May peace be upon you.” “This speech should no longer be given. It’s tired, it’s old. The fact that we have to have a discussion about misconception in a country like America is saddening,” Murphy said. Murphy said he did not only want to inform everyone present about Islam, but he also wished to transform the way they viewed it. “I hope that everyone in here today can learn something and pass it on to others who need the enlightenment,” Murphy said. LOS ANGELES — Kenny Chesney has come roaring back in terms of industry recognition with a field-dominating nine nominations for this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards. The runner-up for most nods was Jason Aldean, who collected six, ahead of Lady Antebellum with five, Brad Paisley with four and Taylor Swift, Toby Keith, Grace Potter and the Eli Young Band with three apiece, academy officials announced Thursday. Researchers with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Department of Behavioral Science are conducting research to examine the effects of medications. All information obtained will be kept confidential. You may be eligible if you: are between 18 and 50 years of age; and have recreationally used opioids for non-medical reasons occasionally (less than 4 to 5 times per month) in the past year (for example OxyContin®, Lortab®, Vicodin® or morphine). Gaming: ‘Mass Effect 3’ could be good or bad “Mass Effect 3” may be the best or the worst game of 2012. Here’s why.
What might go bad: 1. “Mass Effect 2” was not as good in comparison to the first installment in the series. Yes, it allowed players KAYLA to become adjusted to the PICKRELL storyline with a comic book-type introduction Kernel columnist (only for Play Station 3) of the original “Mass Effect,” but the storyline didn’t improve very much for any console
(similar to any trilogy). There were also glitches in the software. 2. RPS? “Mass Effect” has always been strictly RPG. Why change it to RPS (roleplaying shooter) when RPG (role-playing game) has never let you down? It already has enough combat in it, don’t change it to more combat. It will just get old to those who are used to “Mass Effect.” It isn’t something that has been completely released, but all BioWare can talk about is RPS. Not once has there been talk of RPG. 3. Apparently the game is going to be a good start for first-time players of “Mass
Effect.” That is definitely something to worry about. Does that make it easier for “Mass Effect” junkies to play? If so, then it is definitely not going to be what everyone has been raving about.
What might be good: 1. Multiplayer. This could go both directions. Either you hate multiplayer (especially on something like “ME”), or you absolutely adore multiplayer (like me) and jump at the chance of using it. Multiplayer, personally, allows you to play the game differently than if you were
playing by yourself. Either way, games are meant to be played with more than one person. 2. Graphics changed drastically from the original “Mass Effect” to the second one. If this is supposed to a step forward, graphics should be amazing. From what is seen from the previews, it should turn out amazing. 3. Gameplay was better in “Mass Effect 2,” even though the storyline was worse. Same with graphics — if they are progressing, then so will gameplay in essence. The “Mass Effect 3” release date is March 6.
