DanceBlue changes let more dance

UK ready for tough Volunteers

4 Doing the Jamba jive Cats play UT for the second time this season

The big dance is right around the corner, and it’s not March Madness. As teams prepare for DanceBlue, the organization has made a few changes to get more people involved. This year, volunteers are asked to raise $50 and, in return, they get to dance for an hour. “Instead of volunteers just coming and doing their four-hour volunteer shifts, now they get to come and do a four-hour volunteer shift where one hour they actually get to spend on the dance floor,” Clay Stanley, the overall chair, said, “basically getting to experience what it is like to be a dancer.” Operation Chair Will Blackford said the changes made to volunteering were done to get volunteers “more engaged with DanceBlue.” The yearlong fundraising organization ends with a 24-hour dance marathon on March 2-3. UK students create teams and raise money, which is donated to the Golden Matrix Fund for children with cancer. “Our goal is always a million (dollars),” Blackford said. “It’d be nice to break the 700 mark.” For this goal to be reached, the committee has cut back its budget by finding community sponsors. The fee for each dancer also has increased from $300 to $325, and teams are hot on the fundraising trail to raise the required amount. “Teams are doing the normal things they do to raise money,” Stanley said. He said there have been restaurant nights among other fundraisers. But a large fundraiser, Stanley said, is a letter drive where teams give addresses to DanceBlu, and a letter is sent out asking for donations to support each specific team. With more than 90 teams registered, Stanley said they are on track to meet their goals. “This is actually our largest year as far as teams registered,” he said, “so we’re really excited about that.” Another new event added this year is the mini-marathons at elementary schools. Blackford said they started the minimarathons to “reach out to all of Kentucky.” If interested in volunteering, the deadline to register and the $50 fee is Feb. 10. If participating on a team, the deadline to raise the $325 is Feb. 3. The total amount raised will not be released until the final hour of the dance marathon. “Nobody really knows,” said Ethan Ritter, the internal fundraising coordinator. “It’s a push to an end.”

Juniors Candice Cruz, left, and Haley Goode enjoy a smoothie at Jamba Juice's grand opening near campus on Monday. By Kristin Martin news@kykernel.com

January is cold, but for some it may not be too cold for a smoothie. “Not from Jamba Juice,” said Samantha McKeough, a mechanical engineering freshman. Jamba Juice, a smoothie shop, opened at 7 a.m. Monday in Center Court on Upper Street, joining more than 700 other locations across the country. Jamba Juice offers 34 types of smoothies in three different sizes, breakfast wraps, oatmeal, bagels and pretzels. See JAMBA on page 2

Literary magazine gets makeover ‘Shale,’ an annual journal, showcases fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction By Camille Sigler features@kykernel.com

at UK. Shale, originally The Cat’s Figment, is an undergraduate literary journal that hopes to connect their mission with that of the graduate English journal,

Limestone, said Ashleigh Lovelace, editor-in-chief. “Shale often sits below limestone in the formation,” said Lovelace. “And as such, we felt it would make an appropriate pairing for the two journals that arose from the English department and through our contributors’ voices, as part of the rich artistic tradition of

Cats model new jerseys Uniforms special for game against Tennessee Ryan Harrow bounded onto the practice floor, ripping his Nike Hyper Elite Platinum jersey down AARON over his head. SMITH He wanted to model UK’s Kernel new uniforms columnist a day before they debuted, because he won’t get that chance in a game. “I feel like I got a little bit of muscle in these,” he said, glancing down at the new look.

Eloy Vargas, the first UK player on the court in the new jerseys, must have felt the same way too. He flexed for the cameras — or, rather, all the sportswriters’ smart phones — and showed off the alternate uniform. The platinum jerseys are more like a gray, with a sharp blue checkerboard pattern running down both sides. The front looks normal. The back looks like it’s imported from Europe, with the player’s name positioned below the number. Eight other schools will be wearing the new look at some point this season. “I think we’re all excited to get something special like this,” Darius Miller said. Like it? A total matter of individual taste. I think they’re different enough to be cool for one game. See JERSEYS on page 2

JAMBA Continued from page 1 They will soon offer California flatbreads and more. The Razzmatazz contains mixed berries, bananas and orange sherbet. It’s franchise owner Don Marquess’ favorite smoothie, but he said there's a reason to love them all. “It's all natural, no preservatives, no additives and everything is fresh,” he said. “So when you order a mango-pineapple smoothie, we have real mangoes and real pineapples, and that’s all you get in there.”

SHALE Continued from page 1 journal that showcases fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and art. “In the next issue, we will be unveiling a new image to reflect our name,” Hayden said. “The issue will introduce poetry, prose and visual arts, as other issues have in the past.” Shale is currently accepting submissions for the spring 2012 issue for fiction and non-fiction under 2000 words, poetry under 30 lines

Marquess said the fruit and vegetables are shipped after being flash frozen – a process that freezes produce within seconds to lock in nutrients and flavors. Billy Korinko, men’s programming specialist at the VIP Center at UK, ordered the Razzmatazz on Monday during his first visit to a Jamba Juice. “It's refreshing, light and I'd definitely come back,” he said. The calories are posted on the menu, and Marquess said neither the calories nor the prices are too high. “If you’re coming in for breakfast, you can get coffee

Gumbo’s location. Marquess said it's sad that a business closed and people lost jobs. “For us, though, it opened up a fantastic location,” he said. Marquess said students from out of town who had seen Jamba Juice elsewhere started calling him, because they were excited to see something that reminded them of home.

Those interested in creative writing are encouraged to attend the Creative Writing Corner Workshop held every Wednesday in the Writing Center from 4 to 5 p.m. “Shale is really the last logical step to fall into place, and we hope to stick around,” Hayden said.

Style highlights award show LOS ANGELES — The style stakes are heating up this red carpet season, and at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, it was the risks that paid off. The sea of sameness we saw at the Golden Globes gave way to major individualized fashion statements. Emma Stone’s dress — by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen — was a total knockout because of its “exploding lace” bustier, as the fashion house describes it; and the fresh, mid-calf length, all the better to showcase a killer pair of peep-toe shoes. Michelle Williams’ red Valentino gown was distinguished by the twist of a one-shoulder bodice and short, red lace sleeves. The surprising ankle-length, cutaway hem showed off her red Roger Vivier cage sandals. And when it came to details, Zoe Saldana’s white Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci gown, with its tank bodice under a sheer overlay and jeweled neckline, was unlike anything else out there. But the biggest risk-taker was Rose Byrne, who dressed in a white Elie Saab jumpsuit.

As far as trends to take away, there were many shades of pale: Octavia Spencer’s gray Tadashi Shoji gown, Kristen Wiig’s yellow Balenciaga halter gown and Julianna Margulies’ dove gray Calvin Klein dress. The goddess look was big, as evidenced by Viola Davis’ Marchesa strapless white Grecian chiffon gown with antique gold embroidery, Tilda Swinton’s pleated white jersey Lanvin gown and Angelina Jolie’s draped black metallic jersey Jenny Packham gown. When it came to the extras, there were loads of unique jewelry, including Wiig’s 19th century diamond lattice Fred Leighton choker (a miss), Jolie’s striking vintage black and gold House of Lavande hoop earrings and bangle bracelet and Sofia Vergara’s bold Lorraine Schwartz amethyst cuff and earrings. So it seems, not just any borrowed diamonds will do.

McKeough is also no stranger to Jamba Juice. She’s from Illinois and has been to one there. “I actually, like, jumped up and down, literally. I was so excited,” she said, describing the moment she found out about Lexington’s Jamba Juice opening. Marquess said students are welcome to sit and eat or study, and Jamba Juice will have free Wi-Fi. “We’re one of the only Jamba’s, when you look around, that has seating inside and will have seating outside,” Marquess said. “Most of the Jamba’s were created originally as a

smoothie shop and we’ve just started adding food in the last year to year and a half.” After experiencing Jamba Juice in Houston and Hawaii, Marquess and his wife, Emmy, wondered why there wasn't something like it in Kentucky. Marquess connected with his former colleague from the food business, John Speaker and Speaker's wife, Mary, to begin the yearlong process of opening the franchise. He said they plan to open a minimum of seven Jamba Juice locations in the Kentucky, southern Ohio and

southern Indiana area. The next one will open in Fayette Mall this March. “Opening up your own business, you’re going, ‘What if we open the door and nobody's there?’ That fear is always kind of there until you get going,” Marquess said. However, Zach Rose, a psychology and kinesiology sophomore who works at Jamba Juice, said a lot of people visited it the first day of being open. Jamba Juice is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m Sunday.

JERSEYS Continued from page 1 Other people who saw the jerseys at Monday’s practice disagreed. That may be because I have about 20/400 vision, so I don’t have the most discerning eyes. Besides, they’re just aesthetics, a peripheral component of basketball. Sure, they’re not (really) school colors, and the back of that jersey might end up being a severe annoyance to my visual senses. Regardless, the players seemed to like the new look. And it’s the players who are wearing them. “I just saw them in the locker room,” Terrence Jones said. “Hopefully it brings us good luck.”

From one UK to another: A highland hoedown This past month, I had the opportunity to participate in one of Scotland’s most fun (and sweaty) traditions — a ceilidh. Derived from Gaelic terminology meaning “gathering,” ceilidhs (pronounced kaylees or kay-lays) traditionally involved the telling of stories and the singing of songs among friends. However, in modern day, JORDAN ceilidhs have evolved into social parties COVVEY where vibrant folk music is played and Contributing Scottish dances are danced. For those of you thinking “square columnist dance,” you are heading down the right track — but replace the cowboy boots and belt buckles with kilts and knee socks. At my first ceilidh, I arrived at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow, a place where I like to think all the little bagpipes of the world are born and given their own unique melodious screech. In reality, it’s a training school for people interested in learning the art of the instrument, as well as a museum and an event venue. I was attending this ceilidh with a large group of my fellow American Fulbrighters, which made the experience even grander, since practically none of us knew what we were in for

and were of equally lacking ceilidh-ing ability. We had just figured out how to pronounce the word, for goodness sakes. Our room for the evening was set with an open dance floor and a stage with a live band, including fiddle, guitar and percussion. After a nice dinner (haggis, neeps and tatties, of course), we all gathered on the dance floor and looked around aimlessly for someone to tell us what to do.

ner or groups of people, and uniformly required the stamina of a marathon-runner and the ability to twirl around in circles endlessly without vomiting the previously consumed haggis on the floor. Luckily there were no such incidents, and we danced our little American hearts out for the next two hours to dances such as “The Flying Scotsman” and “The Gay Gordons.” There were multiple collisions had among the arms and legs being flung about, but the smiles and belly-laughs were far more consistent. Finally, the evening came to a close, and ended traditionally with the linking of hands among friends and singing of “Auld Lang Syne” (a Robert Burns poem). I lost the feeling in my toes the next morning and suffered from mild dehydration, but I’ll give it to the Scots — these people sure know how to have a good time. For those of you thinking “square dance,” you are heading down the right track — but replace the cowboy boots and belt buckles with kilts and knee socks. Someone better help this group out otherwise we might just take the safe route and break into the “Electric Slide.” Luckily, a dance instructor for the evening emerged (known as a ceilidh caller), who graciously taught us the steps to several common dances. Dances both involved a single part-

UK hosts Tennessee for second matchup Cats anticipate another physical contest from Vols By Sam Rothbauer srothbauer@kykernel.com

UK plays Tennessee for the second time this season on home turf Tuesday and can expect to see more physical play than the last matchup. “They’re pretty good,” senior guard Darius Miller said. “They play extremely hard, extremely physical; maybe more physical than some of the past Tennessee teams.” Tuesday is also the first game the Cats will wear their new Nike uniforms.

“We’re all excited to wear them,” Miller said. “They’re pretty nice uniforms.” Tennessee and its aggressive play recorded more blocks and steals than UK the last time the two teams met in early January. The Vols also had a higher field goal percentage and 3-point percentage. And head coach John Calipari said they continue to improve. “They’re getting better,” Calipari said. “They’re all getting better.” Tennessee and its freshman forward Jarnell Stokes

have more competition and preparation after playing the Cats earlier in January. “I feel they’ve had a lot more games to get better,” sophomore forward Terrence Jones said. “We have too, so it should be an exciting game.” In recent games the Cats have been facing teams who play extremely physical with Arkansas, Alabama and more recently LSU, but Calipari said it’s needed in order to negate the physical play and get better. “The best thing for our team is all this (physical play) PHOTO BY BRANDON GOODWIN | STAFF

happening,” Calipari said. “It’s gonna be just as physical Tuesday and that’s good for us.” In the last matchup Tennessee tallied two more fouls than the Cats, but both teams had four players in foul trouble. “I’m preaching that we’re not fouling,” Calipari said. “We’re playing not to foul.” But Tennessee’s size and strength could pose a threat to the UK defense again. “They have a lot of (strong) guys and they use their bodies really well,” Miller said. “We’re gonna have to come out and do a good job and be prepared for that.” The Cats have had several rough games with teams who continuously tried to put a body on them upon entering league play and Miller said PHOTO BY BRANDON GOODWIN | STAFF they’ve been playing better against these physical teams.
