Two Keys and Tin Roof, both located on South Limestone, will each host Super Bowl Sunday specials.
Game-day bars Two Keys, Tin Roof celebrate Super Bowl LUKE GLASER lglaser@kykernel.com Planning to go out on Super Bowl Sunday? Read how two bars near campus are preparing for football fans. TWO KEYS Aaron Brock, a history junior and bartender at Two Keys Tavern, is rolling up his sleeves for the Super Bowl bash. “We’re expecting a lot of people,” Brock said. Crowds will be attracted by a variety of drink specials, including dollar drafts all day and a bloody mary bar. Two Keys will be pulling down the big screen to project the game, and both Miller and Coors will be promoting their beers and handing out paraphernalia. Goodfellas Pizza, adjacent to the bar, will provide pizza for fans looking for game munchies.

“It’s gonna be a blast, man,” Brock said. “Sunday nights are pretty nice here anyways.” TIN ROOF Usually noted for its good drinks and good music, Tin Roof will be bringing out the cookware for the special occasion. “We’re making homemade chili,” Justin Stephens, bartender and manager, said. “We’ll also have chili cheese nachos.” Bud Light will be running promotions during the game, and Tin Roof will be running 2-for-4 specials on the beer all day. For those who blow their money on beer, Tin Roof will be running the popular Super Bowl Squares during the game. Those who win will receive food vouchers. Stephens, who will be rooting for the Giants, believes that no matter who wins, watching the game will be a fun time. “It’s definitely the place to be,” Stephens said. “It’s a house party at a bar.”

UK President Eli Capilouto spoke in front of a state House committee Thursday in Frankfort, discussing how a possible $20 million budget cut would affect the university. Capilouto sent an email to campus Thursday night, explaining his trip to the Capitol. In a PowerPoint presentation Capilouto presented to legislators, he described UK as a “shining beacon for Kentucky” through its education, research and service. He presented how the nearly $20 million budget cut would impact the university. In the email Capilouto discussed the governor’s proposed state budget. “In as straightforward a manner as possible, I offered a sober assessment of how the current budget proposal would significantly impact our campus,” he said in the email. The nearly $20 million cut “would take us below the level of funding we had at the beginning of the century,” Capilouto said. He said there would be “painful, tough decisions,” with such reductions. He described the trip as a gratifying opportunity to speak to legislators, “but a sobering experience to hear the state of our budget and the lack of alternatives that many legislators believe they have for turning it around in short order.” Campus must understand the reality of the budget, Capilouto said. And with a promise to keep UK informed, he said he will continue to make a case for the university. “I will not cease in that effort,” he said. STAFF REPORT

UK Hoops goes 10-0 in SEC Cats beat Ole Miss 82-41; Sophomore Goss scores 19 LES JOHNS ljohns@kykernel.com When 18 seconds remained, UK held a 41-point advantage over the Ole Miss Rebels. As the teams huddled for a final timeout, it was announced that the Tennessee Lady Vols had lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks 64-60, meaning that the Cats would hold a two-game advantage in the SEC standings, moving them one step closer to their goal of a conference title. The 7,429 UK fans in attendance exploded in cheers, but the team huddled around UK head coach Matthew Mitchell seemed oblivious, despite hearing the announcement and the crowd eruption. Up 41 points with 18 seconds to go, the team stayed focused on coach Mitchell. The UK Hoops team continued its mission toward an SEC regular-season title by

forcing 36 Ole Miss turnovers in an 82-41 victory at Memorial Coliseum Thursday night. “We have goals and we have standards, and we are here to show everyone what we can really do,” sophomore guard Bria Goss said. “We want to take advantage of this opportunity we have.” The stats from the game are overwhelming. The Cats forced the most turnovers in an SEC game this season with 36, leading to 39 points off turnovers. “Kentucky is a very good basketball team,” Ole Miss head coach Renee Ladner said. “Their team is on a mission. They’re definitely the hardest team to play against because of their relentless pressure and their ability to sub so deep. They wear you down.” The Cats missed more shots than Ole Miss attempted by having more than 26 turnovers and winning the rebounding battle 45-38. “We had tremendous energy and commitment from the players,” Mitchell said. “They just stayed after it and kept hustling. Even when we were struggling scoring, I was not upset. They hustled from the opening buzzer to the final one. It was a product of their attitude and commitment in this particular game and it was impressive.” The Cats were led in scoring by Goss, who scored 19 points, hitting 5-11 from the field and 8-10 from the free-throw line.
Three others scored in double-figures for the Cats — sophomore guard Kastine Evans with 12, and sophomore forward Samarie Walker and junior guard A’dia Mathies both with 11. The Cats take their 10-0 SEC record on the road to play LSU in Baton Rouge Sunday afternoon. “We’re aren’t overlooking anyone. Anybody can be beat,” Walker said. “We are focusing on winning a championship. That is our ultimate goal.”

New ‘Resident Evil’ has new story This is an exciting year for “Resident Evil” fans. “Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City,” will be released in March, is one out of the three games released for “Resident Evil.” “Operation Raccoon City” is strictly for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, whereas “Revelations” will be released for Nintendo 3DS and “Resident Evil 6” will be out later this year. “Operation Raccoon City” is a third-party team game based on shooting experience. Instead of continuing with a story, the game starts in the middle of “Resident Evil” 2 and 3. “In theory the game should work, expanding a KAYLA franchise outside of the box it is known to rest comPICKRELL fortably in, giving fans an opportunity to revisit clasKernel sic moments from the past,” Richard George, an edicolumnist tor from IGN.com, said.
The T-virus has shown its effects (from “Resident Evil 2”), and now your team has to get rid of the deadly Q-virus (like the creators couldn’t come up with a better name). You are placed into the Umbrella Security Service (USS) and the task is to make sure no one finds out about how the T-virus was leaked into the city. By being in a third party, you are disconnected from the original context and brought into an indirect way to tackle the virus. Instead of making the story repetitive, it increases the plot by adding X-ray vision to mercenaries and giving the game a more open play, rather than strict guidelines. You are able to change the gameplay by changing characters. You can play someone from the USS, but also be a lone policeman that got left behind with the virus. No matter what the difference is, if you are a ‘Resident Evil’ buff, it is something you have to at least try.
3 things to watch for: UK at USC Here are three things to watch for when UK (22-1, 8-0 SEC) plays at South Carolina (9-11, 1-5 SEC) at 6 p.m. on ESPN/ESPN2. 1. Dominance — UK has crushed its last two opponents, LSU and Tennessee, by a combined 50 points, giving rise to numerous articles about how the Cats are the clear-cut No. 1 team. I wouldn’t disagree with that — but it’s advisable to wait another three weeks. UK still hasn’t played Vanderbilt, at home or away; Florida, at home or away; or MissisAARON sippi State on the road. SMITH For now, UK will play the next scheduled Kernel opponent, and that somecolumnist body is South Carolina. 2. Shooting — USC allows opponents to make 44.5 percent of its field goal attempts, the worst rate in the SEC. UK makes 48.5 percent of its shots, the best rate in the SEC. The Gamecocks are especially porous when defending the 3-point line, as opponents make 39.1 percent of their shots from behind the arc. For UK’s top perimeter threats, Doron Lamb and Darius Miller, this could be a game to bounce back from a tough shooting night against Tennessee. 3. Teague’s improvement — It doesn’t seem long ago when nearly everyone had some criticism for Marquis Teague, but Teague’s production has been more than solid, as shown by comparing his first eight SEC games to John Wall’s and Brandon Knight’s: Teague: Averaging 4.13 assists and 2.38 turnovers in his first eight SEC games. Wall: Averaging 5.88 assists and 3.88 turnovers in his first eight SEC games. Knight: Averaging 3.5 assists and 3.25 turnovers in his first eight SEC games. Teague doesn’t have to score nearly as often as the other two — his 8.75 points per game average in the same span pale compared to Wall’s 15 and Knight’s 16.1 — but that allows him to focus on running an offense. 02.03.12 | weekend timeout | 5

Grammy performers announced RACHEL ARETAKIS raretakis@kykernel.com UK’s energy use was the topic of conversation Thursday when UK energy officials broke down specific costs and energy consumption numbers. The Kentucky Energy Club hosted a forum with Sustainability Coordinator Shane Tedder and Bob Wiseman, vice president of facilities. Tedder and Wiseman discussed the costs of coal versus natural gas, exploring energy options and where UK’s energy comes from. Campus hot water and heat is supplied from three campus facilities, which produce the steam. Students toured the Central Heating Plant Wednesday, which is locat-

ed on South Upper Street. None of the three plants produce electricity. UK purchases electricity from Kentucky Utilities, which costs more than $19 million annually, according to Facilities Management. Most recently, UK implemented a $25million conservation project, which most notably includes computer kiosks outside campus buildings showing the building’s energy use. “We have genuinely tried to be an open and transparent institution,” Wiseman said. Tyler Hess, an agriculture junior who went on the tour, said the university should invest in a feasibility study to investigate alternative energy sources. “I’m not asking to shut down coal plants tomorrow,” Hess said. “I’m asking them to evaluate options.”
LOS ANGELES — The recording academy and Grammy producers have unveiled a flurry of Grammy performers this week, beginning Tuesday with a return to the stage for Adele and a Katy Perry announcement on Wednesday. Thursday, the curtain was pulled back on one of the telecast’s rock ‘n’ roll acts: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, who are gearing up for a new tour. Springsteen isn’t nominated for any new works — “The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story” is, however, in the running for best boxed or special limited edition package — and instead has a new album in “Wrecking Ball,” due March 6, to promote. The upcoming tour with the E Street Band will be the act’s first since the passing of his former band mate, the tenor saxophonist Clarence “Big Man” Clemons. While the performance wasn’t announced as such, the
Grammy telecast is typically loaded with high-concept medleys and pairing, and it wouldn’t be out of the realm of the ordinary to expect Springsteen’s appearance to include a tribute to his late collaborator. Clemons, whose best-known work can be found on numerous Springsteen staples, including “Born to Run,” “Jungleland” and “Rosalita,” among others, died in June at a Palm Beach, Fla., hospital of complications from a massive stroke he suffered at his Florida home. While Clemons had worked with the likes of Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr, Aretha Franklin and Lady Gaga, among many others, he is most closely associated with Springsteen and E Street Band. Springsteen will play a string of dates in the U.S. from March 18 to April 26. MCT
