MCAT will see changes Medical test becoming holistic By Kayla Pickrell kpickrell@kykernel.com
The pre-medicine department is undergoing changes for freshmen in the class of 2016 when they prepare to take the Medical College Admission Test. The MCAT has been around since 1928, with four updates throughout, the last being in 1991. The Association of American Medical Colleges administers the MCAT and has recently revised the test, making it more applicable to modern science. “The MCAT will implement the significant events on the science side, as well as for the shift in the culture of medicine,” said Dr. Jeff Koetje, Kaplan Test Prep’s director of pre-health programs. The new MCAT will prepare students to take into account the cultural background of a patient and will make a move to treat patients holistically. “There is a negative stereotype for doctors because they don’t relate to the patient,” Michael Gasser, a biology junior, said. “People think they merely want to see what’s wrong, then say See MCAT on page 2
With the rematch of UK and Indiana looming, some fans are using an accident to show their UK pride. In the 400 block of Woodland Avenue at about 11:30 a.m., a tree fell and landed on a house. Though there was damage to the house, the fans painted the tree blue and red in celebration of the UK vs. Indiana Sweet 16 game. Sydney Lesser, a political science senior, said she was making a smoothie when she heard something outside. She saw the fallen tree outside her window. “We painted it. Neighbors bought some of the paint,” Lesser
said.” It was a neighborhood effort. It’s really the road to the championship. We saw it as a metaphor. Just like we will take Indiana down easily, with not even a push, this tree went down.” Her housemate, Ashley Gardner, a master’s of accountancy student, was also present when the tree fell. Gardner said she was sad the tree fell, but they had been worried about it blocking a banner they had planned on putting up for the game. “I think it’s beautiful,” Gardner said about the painted tree. “It’s going to go away at some point, but I think they should leave it here until Friday. “Our landlord enjoyed it, I think See TREE on page 2

Calipari plays down revenge By Sam Rothbauer srothbauer@kykernel.com
Word has spread around UK’s campus that the rematch between Indiana and UK in the Sweet 16 won’t be much of a competition. Some argue that with the Cats’ reaction from their last meeting with the Hoosiers, they will come back ready for revenge and beat them easily. But UK head coach John Calipari has heard this talk and he disagrees.

UK’s next potential Student Government leaders highlighted their tickets’ differences in a debate Wednesday, but much of the discussion was focused on what they all had in common: involvement in Greek life. Two sets of presidential and vice presidential candidates centered much of their debate on how to represent both Greek and nonGreek students. On one ticket are Stephen Bilas and Mary Katherine Kington, and on the other are Drake Staples and Mary Ellen Wimberly. All of the candidates are juniors and members of the Greek community. They attributed diversity on their tickets as a way to reach all students, regardless of affiliations with Greek organizations. “We don’t want to give special treatment to any part of campus,” said Staples, a finance and marketing junior running for president. Greeks comprise nearly 20 percent of students at UK, but he said he and Wimberly “want to reach out to 100 percent.” Bilas, a management and finance junior
UK Police is investigating trash can fires on the Kirwan side of the Kirwan-Blanding Complex. On Wednesday, the fire marshall was investigating the reported fire that occurred in an outdoor trash can between Kirwan III and Kirwan IV. During the course of the investigation, it was noted that three additional outdoor trash cans within the complex were also damaged by fire, the bulletin said. The bulletin said the trash cans are independent of one another and were all considered seperate incidents. “The fires were extinguished prior to their discovery,” the bulletin said. No injuries have been reported, but UKPD is looking into the fires. If anyone has any information about the fires, contact UKPD at 859-257-8573.

Student Government candidates participate in a debate on Wednesday. also running for president, said he agreed about not just including the 20 percent of campus that is Greek. “But the question is, how?” he asked. He said that he and Kington looked at students involved in many student organizations in selecting their ticket, but with all their at-large senator candidates being Greek, “that’s 20 percent of campus we’re instantly connected with.” Bilas said students who attended the debate are showing interest. “But how, at the end of the day, do you impact that student that’s not here? We want to im-

pact that student and make their experience better without them even knowing it,” he said. Staples said his and Wimberly’s ticket included senator candidates involved in Residence Life, UK Athletics, Air Force ROTC and more, in addition to Greek life. Kington, a finance junior, also said those on hers and Bilas’ ticket came from diverse backgrounds and their experience set them apart. “We looked at existing senators who were asking the right questions and setting the right examples,” Bilas said about choosing at-large senators for his ticket. “This is very important that they weren’t just bodies in the room.”

“Come on now, this is going to be a war,” Calipari said. “There are 16 teams left, every one of them can play and every one of them is inspired, every one of them is playing out of desperation, every team.” This isn’t Calipari’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament, and judging by the upsets eliminating Duke, Missouri and Florida State, the March Mayhem is in full effect. In the 16 teams remaining, each of them are talented and should be taken seriously, he said. “If you’re still playing now, you’re fortunate and if you get in a chance to play in a game and you expect it is going to be easy you’ll get beat,” Calipari said. “These games are going to be tough, every one of them.” UK’s last matchup with Indiana had freshman forward Anthony Davis and sophomore forSee REVENGE on page 2

Wilkinson said he went outside, walked around the house and found the tree. With the damage to some siding on the house, the front porch and a broken second floor window, Wilkinson said it was not stopping the residents from living there. “It’s nothing severe; it’s minor damage,” Wilkinson said. “We’re just going to go along with it and make the

want to concentrate on playing game-by-game and try to advance to the next round. “They beat us last time, but we’re just going to take it like another game and just come out and play hard,” freshman point guard Marquis Teague said after playing Iowa State. “Do what it takes to win.”

Netflix expands viewing options LOS ANGELES —Netflix continues to expand its original streaming offerings with the horror series “Hemlock Grove,” directed and executive produced by torture horror auteur Eli Roth. The series, starring “X-Men’s” Famke Janssen and Bill Skarsgard, has shades of “Twin Peaks” in its setup, which involves the discovery of a young girl’s mangled body near a Pennsylvania town's abandoned steel mill. There are a lot of suspects: escaped patient from nearby biotech facility? Local Gypsy kid who claims to be a werewolf? Or maybe it’s the arrogant rich guy in town with some dark secrets back at the family mansion? In a bit of a twist, two of those suspects (the Gypsy kid and the rich kid) team up to at-

The upper-level biology content is mainly biochemistry and the new section adds introductory psychology and sociology. “Even though those are both the main topics, students will be able to take other behavioral and social science classes other than psychology and sociology,” Koetje said. The removal of the writing sample allows for the time needed to add the extra section. “They already had the applicant’s personal statements and essays from the medical applications,” Koetje said. “The writing sample never directly influenced whether the applicant got in.” The new changes have been approved and will go into effect spring 2015. However, the essays will be removed in January 2013 to allow for field testing of the new sections. “This is one of the greatest things they’ve ever done,” Gasser said. “This will allow for future doctors to be able to enhance the relationships with patients not only physically, but now emotionally.”

Questions for Student Government candidates These are a few of the questions from the audience during the Student Government debate on Wednesday. See all questions at kykernel.com. To Bilas/Kington: What’s the difference between your teacher accountability program and ratemyprofessor.com?
To Staples/Wimberly: DanceBlue is a very influential event on campus that student government has significantly contributed to financially in the past. Will you continue to allocate a certain amount to the marathon or do you feel there is better use for that money?
I am currently one of the coordinators of the College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors. In two years with the program, we have seen our senators one time, at the end of last school year. This year, I was in contact with SG for about a month before learning that A & S had no senators! If elected, how will you ensure that your college senators are representing their college, as opposed to personal affiliations?
To Bilas/Kington: On your platform you say that you want to increase diversity on SG. Staples-Wimberly has a program called ONE Kentucky planned. What do you have planned on increasing diversity? To Staples/Wimberly: By allowing students the ability to use a $300 loan on things such as spring break, how can you be sure you are not endorsing underage drinking, use of drugs and other illegal activities? How would you regulate spending?
