Men’s tennis earns 8th straight win DAN COLLINS sports@kykernel.com The No. 7 UK men’s tennis team (23-4, 10-0 SEC) earned its eighth straight win Thursday afternoon at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. The Cats, led by senior Eric Quigley and junior Anthony Rossi, captured a resounding 6-1 victory over Illinois. UK won two of the three doubles matches to secure the first point early in the matchup. “In doubles they played really good, felt like everything was going their way,” Quigley said, who lost his match alongside sophomore Panav Jha, 8-1. “Hats off to them in doubles,” Quigley said, “but in singles I felt like everything was going my way.” The No. 3-ranked Quigley faced a familiar adversary in Illinois’ No. 5 Dennis Nevolo, who defeated Quigley when they met last. However, Quigley dominated the match this time by defeating Nevolo 6-3, 62. “I was dictating points,” Quigley said.

After loss to U of L, baseball looks for wins in Arkansas DAvID SChUh dschuh@kykernel.com The No. 1 UK baseball team features a balance of experienced upperclassmen and talented freshmen. With 30 wins already on the season, those freshman contributors know little of last year’s 25-win, conference last-place team. So, for those that experienced the difficulty of last season, Tuesday’s 12-0 home loss to No. 19 Louisville was taken with a grain of salt. “You can look at it as a learning experience but I wouldn’t say it will help us going forward,” junior catcher Luke Maile said. “Nobody likes to lose. It was just one of those games. Hopefully we learn from a loss like this.” The younger players seemed to take the big loss a bit tougher. The 12 runs and 17 hits were the most the Cats have allowed all season. Also, their four hits and zero runs were a season-low offensive output. “You want to forget about it but at the same time you don’t,” said freshman A.J. Reed, the starting pitcher against Louisville. “You want to remember what this felt like. But on the other hand, you don’t want to think about it anymore.” A season-high crowd came to see what was by far UK’s worst loss of the season. This was the Cats’ first home loss, and it stopped a program-record 21-game home win streak. But now the focus turns forward to Arkansas. Ranked as high as No. 9 in one poll, the Razorbacks (24-8, 7-5 SEC) took two of three from Georgia last weekend to move to sec4 | weekend timeout | 04.13.12

No. 22 Rossi clinched the match for the Cats, winning the fourth point over Illinois’ Bruno Abdelnour. “I was nervous, a little bit, in the beginning of the first set,” Rossi said. “I was a little off in the beginning.” Rossi’s match went to a tie-breaker in the first set, which he recalled as a pivotal moment. “I gave three points and a double fault,” Rossi said, who was serving to win the set at 5-4. “I just realized I pretty much missed a big chance to win the set, so after that I just focused a little more.” Rossi’s extra focus proved enough as he captured the set 7-5, and the following set 6-2. “Rossi’s one of the most solid points we’ve ever had here,” head coach Dennis Emery said. “He’s the complete package in terms of athletic ability, competitive spirit and being a good teammate.” Emery was pleased with his teams effort, citing the difficulty of mid-week matches for student athletes, especially toward the end of the academic semester. “It’s a good win for us, it will definitely

Second baseman J.T. Riddle gets a Louisville runner out in UK’s home loss Tuesday. The No. 1-ranked Cats fell to No. 19 Louisville 12-0. “Hopefully we learn from a loss like this,” junior catcher Luke Maile said.

ond place in the SEC West. The No. 1-ranked Cats (30-4, 9-3 SEC) will have to refocus before Friday’s game if they want to continue their conference success and not take a big fall in the national rankings. “It’s important for us to remember how this felt,” UK head coach Gary Henderson said. “We’ll have a couple good practices and show up in Fayetteville. Don’t worry about that.”

end up being one of our top wins,” Emery said. “I was really as proud of our team as I’ve been in a long time.” The match closed with a battle between senior Alex Musialek, No. 15, and No. 38 Roy Kalmanovich of Illinois. Musialek trailed Kalmanovich 4-5 in the second set for what looked like an upset. “I love to watch Alex Musialek play, he’s a great player,” Emery said, “especially when he’s really committed to winning like he was today.” Musialek would battle back to win the second set 7-5, then snatch the third set in a tie-breaker round to finish off the match. Emery said the team is already looking forward to its next match against Vanderbilt. “Vandy is a very good team, a team that we’re going to have to be really prepared to play,” Emery said. “We expect that this is going to be a very tough match for us.” The men’s tennis team will host Vanderbilt in its last home match of the year at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Boone Tennis Complex.

Junior infielder Kara Dill misses tagging a player out at second in Wednesday’s double-header vs. Arkansas. UK won the first game 9-7, and Arkansas won the second 7-3.

Coming off a wild, hit-frenzied doubleheader with Arkansas, UK softball looks to slow the similar-hitting No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs (33-8, 11-5 SEC). “They’re great,” UK head coach Rachel Lawson said. “Georgia swings the bat similar to Arkansas so we’re going to have to do a better job of keeping the run production down.” Georgia is 28th in the nation in home runs, hitting almost a home run per-game (37 in 38 games). After giving up seven home runs to the Arkansas Razorbacks during Wednesday’s double-header, Lawson mentioned how the UK Softball Complex is a “real hitter’s park,” and if the Cats don’t “bring their A game,” then they won’t “be able to compete with them.” Georgia is ranked among the top 50

with 5.53 runs per game. The Bulldogs are led offensively by senior Kristyn Sandberg hitting .388 with 15 home runs. Freshman Paige Wilson (.333), senior Ashley Pauly (.331) and junior Tess Sito (.310) are bringing the other big bats to Lexington. Sito also makes a difference on the mound, entering Friday’s game with a 0.92 ERA and a 7-1 record in 10 appearances this season. If Sito had pitched in the minimum amount of games, her ERA would rank in the top five. Senior teammate Erin Arevalo is 18th in the country with an 1.19 ERA. She also has a 17-3 record in 23 appearances on the mound during the course of the 2012 season. “They have outstanding pitching,” Lawson said. “They have about three pitchers who can handle most SEC lineups, so

we’re going to have to do a good job figuring out how to generate offense.” Leading off for the Cats against the menacing pitching rotation of Georgia will be senior Brittany Cervantes. Cervantes heads into this conference matchup with a four-game home run streak, the longest such streak in her career. “Her swing looks good. She has a lot of confidence at the plate and whether she gets on or not, she’s always going to give you a quality at-bat,” Lawson said. “I think because she has so many quality at-bats you’re starting to see that she’s getting a lot of big hits in key situations.” Game one of the series against the Bulldogs will air Friday at 8:30 p.m. on ESPNU and will be called by feature anchors Cara Capuano and Cheri Kempf. The following two games on Saturday and Sunday are each slated for a 1 p.m. opening pitch. 04.13.12 | weekend timeout | 5

We get a break this year because April 15 falls on a Sunday, so the procrastinators among us won’t have to file their income taxes until Tuesday. If you’re one of those procrastinators, why not waste some more time and ponder these five TV classic comedy episodes in which the IRS was involved. “The Honeymooners” (1956) — Ralph (Jackie Gleason) freaks out when he gets a letter from the IRS ordering him to appear at their office the next morning. He’s sure that he’s being investigated for income tax evasion. Turns out he just forgot to sign his return. “The Jack Benny Program” (1964) — IRS agents can’t believe that Hollywood’s favorite cheapskate could have earned $375,000, yet only spent $19 on entertain-

ment. “All in the Family” (1972) — Archie (Carroll O’Connor) fails to report the extra income he made by driving his friend’s cab, so he is audited by the IRS. He tries to bribe his way out of the audit. “Married ... With Children” (1990) — Al (Ed O’Neill) is about to be audited by the IRS. He needs to quickly find $5,000, so he decides to sell his wife’s hair. “The Simpsons” (1998) — Homer forgets to do his income taxes until the night they are due, so he fills out the forms with false information. He is arrested for tax fraud, but he makes a deal to work for the FBI for immunity from the IRS’ prosecution.easure the lengths of stories.
