Getting into the groove of giving Artistic event at Buster’s featuring musician Ellee Ven will support local charities AMBER FIELDS features@kykernel.com Musician Ellee Ven will be giving individuals of all ages the chance to donate to charities at the event “Give into the Groove” Friday at Buster’s Billards & Backroom. Ven has sculpted the idea that you are never too young to give back to your community, and this event aims to prove just that. Open to all ages, the evening of music from Ven and the March Madness Marching Band, No Excuse, Prodéje, The Swells and Ellie Herring, will fill Buster’s. Bringing the groove of giving back to the community of Lexington is what Ven
plans to accomplish. “It will be a fun night filled with good vibrations,” Ven said. Ven said this event isn’t about feeling obligated to donate a lot of money to one charity, but it’s based on the idea that someone of any age can make a positive impact on his or her community. Ven believes “everyone can do something” and choose what charity he or she wants to support. All proceeds collected Friday will benefit those charities that are participating in “Give into the Groove.” “What a great way to raise money for the nonprofits of Lexington,” said Melissa Patrick, a community communications and leadership development junior. “According

That’s how I measure my wealth.”

Before the stress Cram Jam gives students relaxation time prior to the start of finals week ELIZABETH ROYSE features@kykernel.com For students at UK, finals week can be the most stressful time of the semester. Student Government sponsored a prefinals Cram Jam Thursday at Memorial Coliseum from 6 to 9 p.m. where students could get away from the stress finals bring. Tamika Tompoulidis, director of student organizations for SG, organized all of the 56 volunteers who worked the event. “It was something to relieve students’ stress, for them to relax, and have a little fun during dead week,” Tompoulidis said. “Tamika did a great job coordinating all the volunteer efforts,” said Clay Lampl, SG’s deputy chief of staff for campus issues. The event included service dogs, snack
and massage booths, music and an inflatable obstacle course for students. The first 1,500 students admitted also received free T-shirts. Joseph Kabazie, a junior student organization ambassador, volunteered at Cram Jam. “Cram Jam is something we can give back to the students,” Kabazie said. “It makes finals so much easier.” Not only did Cram Jam provide a stress-free environment for students, but it allowed students to meet new people. “It really helps students connect,” freshman Taban Flores said. “It’s a way to meet people who are going through similar situations as us.” “Everything went so smoothly. Cheerleading squad chosen More than 70 applied to be part of 2012-13 team ERIN GRIGSON features@kykernel.com UK cheerleading tryouts occurred from April 19 to 22, creating two squads for next year’s season. Head coach Jomo Thompson, along with a panel of judges and assistant coaches, narrowed down the original number of more than 70 applicants to the 48 students who will cheer next year. “To steal a bit from (men’s basketball head) coach (John) Calipari, we set the gold standard for cheerleading. T. Lynn (Williamson) likes to refer to us as the Rolls Royce of cheerleading, so we only accept the best,” Thompson said. Seniors in high school are trying to get on the selective team. Veteran cheerleaders are trying to keep their spots, move up to the Blue Squad from the White Squad or keep their spots on the Blue Squad. “I guess you could say it’s like a singing show, like ‘American Idol’ or something; just going out in front of the judges and putting on a show,” said Ashley Vennetti, a freshman White Squad member. The stress can be overwhelming for the new recruits, Thompson said. Some female cheerleaders said the memory of their first tryout at UK is a blackout because it was so traumatic. “There’s nothing to compare it to, no way to prepare yourself for it other than to say it’s like the biggest competition of the year,” said Stephanie Johnson, a returning member of the Blue Squad. For returning cheerleaders, the stress is more about knowing that what they’ll do and how well they do it will affect where they’ll be placed for the next year. “The suspense is definitely the most nerve-racking thing,” said Ryan Heinrich, a Blue Squad junior. “Once you get out there, you have your teammates cheering you on
and helping you out and it’s not near as bad.” At around 8 p.m. Sunday, Thompson announced the cheerleaders who made each squad. “It is really exciting to see new talent coming in because it keeps our program competitive in a good way. It makes everyone want to work hard and keeps the tradition going,” Vennetti said.

Softball facing Gators in weekend series
UK Hoops associate head coach leaving UK women’s basketball associate head coach Kyra Elzy has accepted an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator position at Tennessee, UK Hoops head coach Matthew Mitchell announced in a press release Thursday. “I appreciate all of the time and effort Coach Elzy has put into the Kentucky program over the last four years,” Mitchell said in the Elzy release. “She means a lot to me personally and I truly thank her for everything she has done to help build Kentucky to one of the best pro-

Florida welcomes the Cats after collecting a 13-2 record since March 31. The Cats are hoping the Gators are looking ahead to a looming series against No. 3 Alabama. The Gators have propelled to their No. 4 ranking with much help from their pitching staff, which is third in the nation with a 1.13 ERA. Gator sophomore right-hander Hannah Rogers leads the Gators and is ranked in the top five nationally in both ERA (1.05) and victories (25). Freshman Gator Lauren Haeger, the second half of the Gators’ pitching duo, has a 1.31 ERA. In 19 appearances this season she has earned a 12-3 record.
Not to be lost in the success are the Gators’ bats. Florida’s team .313 batting average ranks 22nd in the nation. In producing that average, the Gators are hitting home runs at a clip of 1.22 per game, which ranks 11th nationally and is second to Alabama in the SEC. For the first time in many weeks, it was UK’s pitching that didn’t have a problem during its three weekend losses to Mississippi State, but its bats couldn’t plate winning runs in all three games. The Cats’ go-to pitcher, senior Chanda Bell, has a 1210 record out of a team-high 30 appearances on the mound. She also overwhelmingly leads the team with 157 strikeouts, 88 more than UK’s second pitcher in the rotation, senior Rachel Riley. Game one is scheduled for a 6 p.m. opening pitch Friday and game two will begin at 1 Saturday. The series will conclude with a noon start on Sunday.

We wish Coach Elzy the best.” Elzy spent four seasons on Mitchell’s staff in Lexington, serving as assistant coach, associate coach and recruiting coordinator. Elzy played under Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt at Tennessee, winning two national championships, in 1997 and 1998. A national search to replace Elzy will begin immediately, according to the release.
Heading into this weekend’s series with the defending SEC Champion Vanderbilt Commodores, the UK baseball team has acquired some accolades. Freshman centerfielder Austin Cousino was named to the USA Collegiate National Team on Wednesday. He is the third UK player to get such an honor and the first since 1999. “It is a great honor,” Cousino said in a UK
Athletics news release. “You get to be surrounded by great players and coaches during the summer, which is a great asset. It is a great privilege to honor your country and wear USA across your chest.” Cousino is leading the Cats with a .345 batting average and 22 multi-hit games. He has reached base safely in 38 of his 41 career games. Sophomore Corey Littrell was named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame National Pitcher of the Year watch list on Wednesday. A Trinity High School (Louisville) product, Littrell is one of 51 pitchers around the country to be honored.
The sophomore leads the Cats with a 6-0 record, while also boasting a 2.51 ERA and a 3.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio, both of which rank best of all UK starting pitchers. But, with the weekend in mind, the Cats (35-7, 13-5 SEC) look to refocus after a second loss to Louisville. The Cardinals’ 10-2 win Tuesday marked the first time since 1970 they had swept the season series between the in-state rivals. SEE BASEBALL PAGE 9

UK gets 4 cherry blossoms Japan dedicated four cherry blossom trees to UK’s campus, honoring the friendship between Kentucky and Japan. A ceremony was held at the Niles Gallery Thursday to recognize the gift, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the tress. The Japan/America Society of Kentucky was awarded 20 offspring from the original cherry blossom trees, which were to be given to the Commonwealth of Kentucky according to a UK news release.
“The cherry trees weave a rich thread through our campus,” UK President Eli Capilouto said in an email to the Kernel. “We’ve planted them in the heart of our university core — students from all disciplines and backgrounds will walk by and enjoy their lasting beauty for many years. “This is a truly special celebration for the University of Kentucky, our city and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

'The Hunt for bin Laden' REASON TO WATCH: Tagged to the one-year anniversary. WHAT IT’S ABOUT: On May 1, 2011, a special-forces operation hit a compound in Pakistan, where a target known simply as “Geronimo” was in hiding. His death marked the end of a hunt that stretched 20 years. This documentary picks up at the beginning, when a fatwa is declared on the United States by a then largely unknown Saudi named Osama bin Laden. A string of attacks around the world follows, and the U.S. response is faltering or inconsistent — hamstrung by interagency turf wars, or obscure bureaucratic dictums preventing sharing of information. Most people interviewed here say bin Laden absolutely was trapped at Tora Bora, although he escaped because of an insuffi-
cient U.S. force on the ground. The last 20 or so minutes wrap with the compound assault. Many are interviewed, including former CIA and FBI officials, as well as former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, former national security adviser and terrorism expert Richard A. Clarke, and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. MY SAY: After reading the foregoing, the thought no doubt abruptly occurred to you that, “OK, I get it — nothing new here. Move along ...” And move along, indeed, if you are of no mind for a long recitation of details and observations that have been chronicled elsewhere. BOTTOM LINE: Basic overview of a story we already (think we) know very well, but some good perspective. MCT
