Kernel names new editor timeout features

7DAYS UT

Current news editor Morgan Eads chosen for 2014-15 year WILL WRIGHT wwright@kykernel.com

The Kentucky Kernel named junior Morgan Eads editor-in-chief for the 2014-15 school year. Kernel Press Inc. made the decision after interviewing Eads and Judah Taylor, the current opinions editor. The nonprofit board, comprised Morgan Eads of several Kernel alumni, the director of the School of Journalism and the current editor-in-chief, chooses a new editor every year. “We had two great candidates this year,” said Duane Bonifer, chairman of Kernel Press Inc. “They’re both very thoughtful, introspective people.”

Eads is the current news editor of the Kernel and a journalism junior from Garrard County. She was an intern for the Lexington HeraldLeader last summer, the assistant news editor of the Kernel last spring, and a Kernel reporter in fall 2012. For the past two years, only one person has run for the position. The fact that two people ran, Bonifer said, shows the quality of past editors. “We’ve had a string of really good editors,” he said. “The last several editors all were such great editors that they were inspiring to both of the candidates tonight.” The Kernel changes every year, and Bonifer said with every editor comes a fresh take on the newspaper. “(The Kernel) takes on the personality of its editor,” Bonifer said. “The structure often stays the same,

but the flavor and emphasis changes year to year.” Eads said she plans to put more emphasis on spot news in the upcoming year. “One thing that I really want to tackle is making sure breaking news is a priority,” she said. “The big thing that I want to do is make sure the Kernel is the go-to place for students to find out what is going on.” In addition, Eads plans on building up the Kernel’s investigative stories. “A big responsibility of the Kernel is holding the university accountable,” she said. “I want to make sure we know what’s going on behind the scenes.” Rachel Aretakis, editor-in-chief, said Eads had multiple good ideas on how to grow the paper. “Morgan is one of our best reporters and best editors,” Aretakis said. “She loves the Kernel.”

Q&A with Jason Bateman

KYLE ARENSDORF Kernel columnist

Jason Bateman stars in and makes his directorial debut with “Bad Words,” a film about a man who forces his way into a children’s spelling bee to exact revenge for his childhood loss. “Bad Words” hits theaters Friday. Here are a few takeaways from my conference call with Bateman.

How was directing different from acting as an artistic outlet?

“Well, with acting you’re trying to convince people you’re someone different, and with directing you’re trying to create a totally fake world for the audience and trying to shape an experience for that audience with what they see, what they hear, what they feel. I was really excited about that challenge of taking on more responsibility.”

You seem to always play a good guy, or a really sweet character. Your acting in this film is a departure from that. How did you switch gears to play this role?

“I mean, I know how to be a jerk. We all have that guy in us, and you hope that you can keep that person under wraps. I understand a level of frustration and petulance that brings about your worst side. I know what it’s like to feel taxed and not at your best, so that’s the part I had to get into right before each scene.”

for quite a while now. So I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve about how to look vulnerable, or confused, or nervous, etc.”

I’ve heard that overtly violent or overtly crude movies that feature young actors have a lot of editing done so the children aren’t exposed to too much of that. Did you and your editors find yourselves trying to keep it more PG-13 for the kids?

“No, not really. This movie is a hard R, and we didn’t surprise anybody on the set. Everybody gets the script before they decide to come in You decided to take on and audition to be in the the main role of Guy yourBateman movie. It’s their choice. But self. Did your vision for the character change at all after saying a dirty word here or you made that decision? there, or looking at a woman’s breasts? I mean, come on. People are “I was adequately confident that I sunbathing without tops on in Europe, could make him likable enough, only and that continent’s not pumping out because I’ve been playing the straight a bunch of adolescent murderers left man, the middle man, the protagonist and right.”

Looking back at a night of chaos, 2 years later

Dream Game 2014

Tattered couches, broken chairs and ripped recliners were dragged out of houses. They were pushed down driveways and thrown into the middle of streets, becoming bonfires for fans to chant and circle around. Welcome to the student neighborhoods near campus in the aftermath of a Final Four win over the University of Louisville in 2012. RACHEL I was assigned to cover ARETAKIS the celebrations after the Editorgame for the Kernel. I had in-chief never covered an event quite like that before. The celebration turned chaotic, as people lashed out against Louisville fans and police, destroying property and getting hurt in the process. All in the name of basketball. I did not know what I was getting into when my editor assigned me to report on State Street. I thought I would get to hang out with my friends during the first half, observe the celebrations, take notes and interview fans in the street after the win. But instead, I reported on fans jumping on cars, crushing in their windows and flipping them. One was even set on fire after it was looted. Fans, mostly students, circled around the flaming car, cheering and chanting and celebrating their great basketball team. As beer bottles whizzed by my head, I wondered how the celebrations quickly esca-

lated into chaos with police in riot gear shooting pepper-spray balls into the air to disperse the crowd. Now, two years later, UK students and fans are itching for another NCAA Tournament win over the Cardinals. I look back and remember how I had fun covering that night. The way fans feel about winning a tournament game is the way I feel about getting to cover such an epic event. But I also remember how ridiculous it became and how people were actually proud of burning a car. Only about half of the students who witnessed the 2012 championship are still at the university, and the other half are excited to possibly get their chance. And once again, UK is matched up against Louisville in the tournament, a rare opportunity to play its rival twice in one year. If UK wins, expect crowds and mayhem. Expect women propped on shoulders flashing the crowd and men frantically rushing to grab them. Expect arrests, burning couches and ambulances. But also expect police, firefighters and the university to be prepared. The celebration two years ago was unexpected. This year it is not. The Kernel will be out covering any celebrations once again. We’ll be taking photos and writing stories, interviewing fans and recording the disorder that could ensue. I had to tell my staff to be careful not get hurt, and dodge fires and beer bottles. I shouldn’t have to worry about that, but that is the unfortunate reality of UK fans and their love of basketball.

Dream Game 2014

Cats should be confident in 2nd matchup with Cards

6 | weekend timeout | 03.28.14

Over the last month, there have been few reasons to believe UK had a chance to advance very far in the NCAA Tournament. With the team regressing rather than peaking, Cats fans would have feared a potential DAVID matchup with the UniverSCHUH sity of Louisville in Kernel March. columnist But that was before the SEC Tournament. Whatever UK figured out that week stuck, and the Cats enter the Sweet 16 this weekend riding a wave of momentum. For three reasons they should have a ton of confidence in Indianapolis on Friday night: Size advantage: UK outrebounded Louisville by eight in December, a number that is far from the Cats’ best this season. But the Cardinals’ leading rebounder that day, Chane Behanan, was dismissed from the team shortly thereafter. Even with Behanan, Louisville had a serious size disadvantage. Without him in the game, the Cats have an even bigger disparity in length at every position. And it isn’t just in the frontcourt. UK freshman guards Andrew Harrison, Aaron Harrison and James Young are all 6 feet 6 inches, much taller than Louisville guards Chris Jones and Russ Smith, who stand five or more inches shorter. And when Jones and Smith implore the Cardinals’ typical frenetic full-court press, UK’s guards should have little trouble using their size to go through and over the Louisville defense. Cardinals’ stumbles: Entering the NCAA Tournament, Louisville was everyone’s darling and for the right reason. The Cardinals had won 14 of their last 15 and were not just winning, but obliterating teams on their way to the American Athletic Conference Championship. But in two NCAA Tournament games, Louisville has looked beatable. First, 13seed Manhattan College not only hung with the Cardinals, but actually held a threepoint lead with less than four minutes to go. Louisville snuck out the win late, but again didn’t start well in its third-round game against Saint Louis University. Again, the Cardinals turned it on late, but UK’s

If Louisville starts the way it did last week, the Cats could build a lead that won’t be so easy to overcome. Cats surging: The biggest reason for UK’s confidence should be its own sudden momentum. While it clicked later than expected, the Cats’ potential may finally have been reached. The result has been four wins in five games, the only loss coming by one point against the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. UK is playing its best basketball of the season, and after beating previously undefeated Wichita State University in the round of 32, the Cats’ self-belief is as high as it has ever been this year. This is a rivalry game, one with much more on the line than usual. Louisville has the experience; UK has the talented youth. But given their own momentum, physical advantages and the knowledge that they beat the Cardinals three months ago, the Cats should take the floor Friday with unbridled confidence.

The Cats will win because they’ve built momentum that will give them confidence against Louisville.

UK may be on a recent hot streak, but if anyone has the chance to stop the Cats, it’s instate rival Louisville.

I think it will be a closer game than the game in Lexington, but with the way the Cats are playing now, I can’t see them losing to a team they already beat.

AMELIA ORWICK, MANAGING EDITOR UK 76, LOUISVILLE 68

MORGAN EADS, NEWS EDITOR UK 59, LOUISVILLE 58

RACHEL WALKER, DESIGN EDITOR UK 72, LOUISVILLE 69

I pick UK because of its size. Russ Smith is the Cardinals’ only true threat, and he won’t be able to compete next to the Cats’ big players.

The teams are similar in skill levels, but UK’s amount of fan support will help them take a narrow win.

DAVID SCHUH, MANAGING EDITOR UK 76, LOUISVILLE 68

WILL WRIGHT, ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR UK 78, LOUISVILLE 72

KYLE ARENSDORF, ASSISTANT OPINIONS EDITOR UK 68, LOUISVILLE 64

The Cats won this matchup once this year when they were worse, the Cardinals’ leading rebounder was still on the team, and Julius Randle didn’t play the entire second half.

The Cats will win Friday’s game because they are finally confident as a team.

Louisville is favored by 4.5 points, but with close victories against Manhattan College and Saint Louis University, the Cardinals should be in over their heads against the Cats.

Based on the scores from the past games, I believe UK can beat Louisville once again.

Starting five: Who has the edge?

Dream Game 2014

UK’S STARTING FIVE

#5

#2

Randle, freshman forward #30 Julius Cramps took down Randle for the second half of the game in December, but he still had one of his best halves of the season. He’s passed the ball more lately (seven assists against Wichita State).

#44

8 | weekend timeout | 03.28.14

He's been a Cat killer for three years now, and Smith has evolved from a straight scorer to a guy who can share the ball. He's a scorer at heart and the Cards’ most prolific offensive player.

#11 Edge: Hancock

Luke Hancock, senior guard Hancock has matched up against less-athletic wing defenders throughout the AAC and NCAA Tournaments, but he will be paired against one of the Cats' 6-foot-6-inch guards on Friday.

#24

#44 Edge: Johnson

Montrezl Harrell, sophomore forward Harrell did not match up with Randle much in December, as Harrell played six minutes in the first half while Randle ran through the Cardinals’ defense.

Edge: Push

Dakari Johnson, freshman center Johnson has been up and down all year. Sophomore forward Willie Cauley-Stein may see more playing time, but Johnson can play physically with Stephen Van Treese.

Russ Smith, senior guard

Edge: Smith

James Young, freshman guard Young is still a volume shooter, and when he is on target, UK's offense is running on all cylinders. But he does have dry spells as often as his big games.

Chris Jones, junior guard Jones had 18 points against UK in December and showed quickness against the bigger UK guards. He's also been on a hot streak with six double-digit scoring performances in the past seven games.

Edge: Harrison

Aaron Harrison, freshman guard Aaron Harrison has been a consistent scorer throughout the season, and he will be able to shoot over the smaller Louisville guards. The real question — can he defend Russ Smith?

#1

#3

Andrew Harrison, freshman guard Does John Calipari's “triple tweak” apply to Andrew Harrison? Something changed for the point guard, who keyed UK's second-half comeback on Sunday against Wichita State University.

#2

LOUISVILLE’S STARTING FIVE

Stephen Van Treese, junior forward Van Treese does not produce much offense (2.8 points per game), but his rebounding and defense are essential for Louisville in front of the rim.

Dream Game 2014

UK-Louisville Patterson confident play twice UK will be victorious for 7th time DAVID SCHUH dschuh@kykernel.com

The UK-Louisville rivalry dates back to the early 1900s, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that it became what it is today. After 61 years without playing each other in a regular-season game, the in-state rivals rebooted the annual series in November 1983. Since that game, the Cats and Cardinals have played 32 times, with UK winning 21 of those games. Friday will mark the seventh time in history, though, that the two teams have played twice in a season. The first time came in 1914, the first of three straight seasons in which they played two regular-season games. The series was resurrected for two regularseason games in 1922 before pausing again until a 1951 NCAA Tournament game. Since the last instance of two regular-season matchups 92 years ago, every such instance has occurred because of an NCAA Tournament game between the rivals. The Cats are 3-2 in those postseason games going into Friday’s Sweet 16; they are winners of the last two, including beating the Cardinals in the 2012 Final Four in New Orleans.

MATT OVERING movering@kykernel.com

UK has won five of six games against the University of Louisville with head coach John Calipari at the helm. The only loss was last season’s 80-77 defeat in Louisville. In Calipari’s tenure, UK has beaten Louisville in Lexington, in Louisville and in the NCAA Tournament. Patrick Patterson, a rollover from the Billy Gillispie era at UK, played for Calipari during his junior season in 2009-10. He told the Kernel that he was more worried about the Wichita State University game than the Sweet 16 matchup. “We beat (Louisville) earlier in the year so we should have no problem beating them again,” Patterson said. “I have no doubt in my mind that UK will win.” Patterson won just one game against Louisville in his three seasons in Lexington, and it was with Calipari manning the sidelines. He said that the rivalry is different as a player. “You see the fans, you see the students, the amount of passion and hatred for one another is there,” Patterson said. “When you’re staring the Cardinals in the face, the history, the criticism, it all comes out on the court. You embrace it and you go out and play for UK.” Patterson said he loves watching the current Cats play. He said that freshman forward Julius Randle is “hands down” his favorite player. UK has improved recently, and Patterson credits Calipari with preparing the team well for March. “Coach Cal is always focused on March. Every year his teams get better as the year progresses,” Patterson said. “He gets his team focused on the bigger picture.”

STAFF FILE PHOTO

Former Cat Patrick Patterson told the Kernel there’s “more pressure,” in UK-U of L games. UK has won 15 of 17 NCAA Tournament games under Calipari, including eight straight. Expectations for this team were high at the start of the year, and Patterson still has high expectations for the players. And against Louisville, Patterson said, the expectations are different. “It gives the winner the right to say ‘We’re the best team in the state,’” he said. “There are more fans, more people behind you and against you. Overall, there’s more pressure. That environment can make you or break you.” Patterson said that although he’s not a current player, he wants the Cardinals to be the team that breaks. “I don’t really stress about it as much because I don’t play for UK,” Patterson said. “But I still want UK to beat Louisville in every sport.”

All eyes on Hoops vs. Baylor after thriller in December Dream Game 2014

No one expected a December matchup between UK and Baylor University to be the game of the year. But after four overtimes and more than three hours, UK Hoops’ 133-130 victory over Baylor was not only the best game of the year, but the best game in a decade. On Saturday, a rematch of the epic game will take place. The stakes will be KEVIN higher. A spot in the Elite ERPENBECK Eight awaits the winner. UK has never made it Kernel to three straight Elite Eight columnist appearances. This team has a chance to prove its December win was not a fluke by beating an elite program twice in one season. For the Bears, it’s a chance at redemption. The four-overtime thriller featured a stellar 47point performance from senior guard Odyssey Sims. Sims fouled out in the first overtime and on Saturday, she has a shot at revenge. UK junior guard Jennifer O’Neill had a

historic night of her own, scoring the highest number of points in a game in program history. O’Neill will need another sharp offensive day if the Cats are to keep up with the highscoring Bears. UK also needs to improve its team defense. The Cats had a 74-62 lead over the Bears with 9:43 to go in regulation. However, after giving up a 21-8 run, UK found itself playing from behind for the final four minutes. The Cats had another lead near the end of the first overtime period. But that too was erased, and the game continued. UK head coach Matthew Mitchell said defense was the biggest problem in the December game, knowing it will have to improve to beat the Bears a second time. Both teams can learn from the previous matchup. They know the outcome of this game will top everything else that has hap pened in their respective seasons, including their regular-season matchup against each other. This rematch comes during the NCAA Tournament. The winner’s season will continue, while the loser’s will come to an abrupt end.

Hoops faces sweet rematch Baylor stands in way of Cats’ spot in Elite Eight TYLER SPANYER tspanyer@kykernel.com

A traditional power versus a program trying to make its first Final Four is a classic setup in Notre Dame University’s Purcell Pavilion. That is what 3-seed UK Hoops and 2seed Baylor University bring to the table Saturday in a Sweet 16 matchup. “It will be a real, real test for our team,” UK head coach Matthew Mitchell said. “Baylor has a fantastic team and they’ve had a great season, and we know from firsthand experience how tough they are and so we’ll just have to continue to try and prepare well.” The Cats clinched their third-straight trip to the Sweet 16 after breezing through 14seed Wright State University and surviving 6seed Syracuse University’s comeback bid. In their regular-season matchup, UK and Baylor needed 60 minutes to decide a winner as UK went on to win, 133-130, in a fourovertime classic.

12 | weekend timeout | 03.28.14

Junior guard Jennifer O’Neill recorded a career-high and program-record 43 points in the win, while Baylor superstar senior guard Odyssey Sims scored a game-high 47 points, but fouled out in the first overtime.

Next Game Who: UK vs. Baylor When: Noon, Saturday Where: Purcell Pavilion, South Bend, Ind. Televised: ESPN

“When you go back and watch that game, it was a very exciting game to watch,” Mitchell said. “But from a coaching stand-

point, it wasn’t fun to go back and watch the kind of defense we played. We just didn’t have a very good defensive night at all. We certainly didn’t do a very good job against Odyssey (Sims).” UK struggled after the win over Baylor while the Bears hit their stride, losing just three more games all season. The Cats will use a balanced offensive and defensive game in an attempt to hold Sims, the nation’s second-leading scorer, in check on Saturday. “She’s just so explosive and so tough to guard,” Mitchell said. “You need to play as well off the ball as well as you can to try and limit her getting the ball in her hands. She’s really, really hard to defend once she has the ball in her hands.” The Cats and Bears tip off Saturday at noon. The winner will face the winner of the game between 1-seed University of Notre Dame and 5-seed Oklahoma State University in the Elite Eight.

Police may tow cars

Dream Game 2014

Lexington Police have placed temporary no-parking zones in locations including State Street and University Avenue. The tow-away zones will be effective from 5 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. Last year, hours after the Final Four game against Louisville, a car was flipped and burned on State Street. On the day of the National Championship game, however, cars were ordered to be moved off the street by 5 p.m. The parking lots of Commonwealth Stadium are open to cars without permits from 3:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. UK spokesman Jay Blanton said the Commonwealth Stadium parking lots should accommodate anyone wishing to relocate their vehicles from off-campus housing. Police urge people to look for the paper signs before they park throughout town. For questions, call Lexington police at 859-258-3666. STAFF REPORT

NCAA SWEET 16 BRACKET

The remaining road to Dallas NICK GRAY ngray@kykernel.com

There is another game on Friday night, and it will have bearing on UK’s chances to make the Final Four should the Cats beat Louisville. The University of Tennessee and University of Michigan will play each other at 7:15 p.m. on Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium with aspirations of traveling to North Texas just like UK and Louisville. Both teams have much different strengths — Tennessee relies on outworking opponents while Michigan uses its perimeter players to find success.

Tennessee Volunteers Record: 24-12, 11-7 SEC Key players: Junior forward Jarnell Stokes (15.2 points per game, 10.7 rebounds per game); senior guard Jordan McRae (18.6 points per game, 80.1 percent free throw shooting). Season story: The Volunteers started 6-4 with losses to NIT-bound UTEP, among others. Tennessee’s struggles continued through the first two-thirds of conference play, including two losses to Texas A&M University and an eight-point loss at UK. With fans pubically calling for head coach Cuonzo Martin’s job, Tennessee turned its season around by winning seven of its last eight games. NCAA Tournament path: First round win vs. the University of Iowa (78-65 in overtime); Second round win vs. the University Massachusetts (86-67); Third round win vs. Mercer University (83-63).

VS.

Michigan Wolverines Record: 27-8, 15-3 Big Ten Key players: Sophomore guard Nik Stauskas (17.4 points per game, 45 percent 3-point shooting); sophomore forward Glenn Robinson III (13.1 points per game, 48 percent shooting). Season story: Michigan won the Big Ten regular season championship without sophomore forward Mitch McGary, who had back surgery in December and is still out of action. The Wolverines used a guardheavy lineup to lead the conference in 3-point shooting and defeat five ranked teams in-conference. Their season culminated with a season sweep over in-state rival Michigan State University, though the Spartans beat the Wolverines in the Big Ten Tournament final. NCAA Tournament path: Second round win vs. Wofford College (57-40); Third round win vs. the University of Texas (79-65). 03.28.14 | weekend timeout| 15
