Hypothetically, who replaces Cal?

Ever since former UK player Rex Chapman tweeted minutes before the National Championship game that head coach John Calipari was a “#DONEDEAL” to go to the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers, rumors have abound about if Chapman’s tweet is true and who would hypothetically be the Cats’ next head coach. Some have speculated widely successful coaches like Arizona’s Sean Miller. But there are candidates out there that make much more sense than a coach who has at least made the Sweet 16 in the last three seasons. Athletic director Mitch Barnhart has one last chance to make a long-term, home-run NICK hire that will cement his legacy at the univerGRAY sity. One of these fine individuals will allow Sports this to happen Editor 1. Rex Chapman – Since Chapman seems to be the only person who is in the know about Calipari going to the NBA, he will naturally have the inside track on the head coaching vacancy. And Chapman would like to redeem his image after Cats fans have blamed him for his tweet’s poor timing. The move would repair Chapman’s relationship with UK fans as long as he wins. Otherwise, he would be one of the most hated figures in program history. Such is the baggage around the job. 2. Drake – Who else brings youth and comfort around the program like the 27-year-old musician and UK fan? There are too many jokes that can be made with him and one of his songs, but there’s no doubt he has an NBA pedigree (currently the Toronto Raptors’ team ambassador) and the re-

cruiting ties needed with the recent Canadian explosion of talent. Sad Drake’s facial expression will cheer up the fan base after every loss, and UK’s games will be must see regardless. 3. Phil Jackson – Before the Lakers hired Mike D’Antoni, Phil Jackson was preparing to take his old job again. If Calipari goes to Los Angeles, he’ll see that the best college job in the country is available. Seeing the abject mess that the New York Knicks are currently in, Jackson tells owner James Dolan to shove it and signs a 10-year, $80 million contract with UK to be its head coach. His zen-like tactics will be used best in recruiting 18year-olds, like Class of 2015 five-star center Stephen Zimmerman. Jackson will also bring star celebrities like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and old pal Jack Nicholson. 4. Richard Pitino – In the NIT final, Richard Pitino was Minnesota head coach in name only. Rick Pitino, his father, sat right behind the Golden Gophers’ bench and barked out order after order. Richard Pitino, who’s still upset with his daddy about getting in his way, gets the ultimate one-up by taking the UK job and getting the chance to whip his old man every season. Envision Richard and Rick Pitino staging a boxing-like weigh-in one day before UK-Louisville next year, where they’ll engage in trash talk and a tense stare down. It’s all in the name of family and rivalry. John Calipari doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, no matter how many of his players and coaches leave the program. But if he does do the unimaginable, any four of these public figures will make a 2015 National Championship a #DONEDEAL.

Strickland leaving UK

Men’s basketball assistant coach Rod Strickland will leave UK to become an assistant coach under Orlando Antigua at South Florida, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported. Spokesmen from USF and UK both said that they could not confirm any move. Strickland had been working with head coach John Calipari in an administrative role since 2006 when Calipari was at Memphis. Rod Strickland Strickland moved with Calipari to UK and became an assistant coach before this season for the first time in his coaching career. He follows Antigua, an assistant coach at UK from 20092014, to USF after Antigua became its head coach on March 31. Strickland’s departure now leaves two holes in Calipari's coaching staff for next season. The Cats won one national championship and appeared in three Final Fours with the pair on staff. ‘America’ is packed with action timeout features

The “Aquaman” of the Marvel Universe, Captain America, gets his second feature film. With half the strength of The Hulk and Thor, Captain America keeps up with his Marvel counterparts with his boy scoutlike leadership intangibles. Oh yeah, and a shield. KYLE My objections ARENSDORF to the premise of the superhero CapKernel tain America aside, columnist “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was my third favorite Marvel movie to date. It’s better than the original and is jam-packed with action scenes to carry the entertaining but slightly too lengthy plot. Where the first installment in the two-part series (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) lacked in excitement to drive the bland historical plot, the second made up for it in

wall-to-wall action throughout. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is now well-versed in his superpowers and shows them off in a bevy of ways that he didn’t in the first “Captain America” and “The Avengers.” When Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D., Rogers, with the help of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), goes on the defensive against the duplicitous agency. At S.H.I.E.L.D., Rogers must deal with bigwig Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), who is in charge of a defense project that would give S.H.I.E.L.D. the power to zap millions of threats and potential threats with the push of a button. Not only this, but Rogers must deal with his own personal objections to the lack of privacy the project would evoke. Redford is perfectly cast as a seemingly innocuous character turned Hydra member. He relishes in roles in which he can play his traditional understated “Redford.” His casting in this film is an interesting one. “Captain America: The Winter

Soldier” has a very paranoid feel to it, sort of like the typical paranoia films of the 70s with which Redford molded his career. My only objection to the film was in the treatment of the titular villainous character, the Winter Soldier. He is featured as a dark, sinister enigma that doesn’t know anything but the task at hand, whether it be a search and rescue mission or a murder. I thought they had something with that character, but what they had built was lost when he removed his mask, although it was a requirement of the plot. However, the final fight scene between the Winter Soldier and Captain America is one for the ages, and not in the way you’d think. This fight scene elicits emotions in its play on brotherhood and compassion in a way that I haven’t seen before. It isn’t the best Marvel installment, and it could benefit from some drastic editing, but “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” definitely sets the bar for this summer’s blockbusters.

If you weren’t fortunate enough to foot the whopping bill to attend the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this year, don’t worry. You can do like the rest of us and fake it until you make it. Here are the summer music festival must haves for this year and ANYSSA trust me, if you ROBERTS come back to Kernel school on Monday columnist with these items on, no one will be the wiser. Chicks Maxi skirt — Easy to put on and comfortable to wear, a maxi skirt is a great piece to “bohemify” any look. If you are planning to wear one to a festival, choose cotton or chiffon. These fabrics breathe the best in summer heat. Destroyed Denim — The beauty

in these babies is you can customize them any way you like. Rip them up a little or shred those bad boys to bits. Birkenstocks — I almost begrudgingly put these on the list, but I tried on a pair in the shop one day and actually liked the way they looked. Plus, they are crazy comfortable. Flower Crown — I am slightly obsessed with flower crowns right now. They scream 1960s flower child and they are as easy to make as they are to wear. Leather crossbody — Purses are the frenemy women can’t seem to get rid of. While we hate how they always get in the way, where else are we going to keep all of our stuff? A leather crossbody bag is a durable yet stylish way to hold your things and the long strap will keep it out of your way. Dudes Nerd glasses — It doesn’t matter if you’ve scored perfect 20/20 vi-

sion since birth, no festival look is complete without a pair of these. Snapback — Besides protecting your head from the sweltering summer heat, a snap back can be an awesome statement piece in your look and can be completely versatile. Funny tank — Men seem to have the pick of the litter when it comes to choosing a tank top. Man tanks come in so many awesome and hilarious styles, I might actually start buying mine from the men’s section. Birkenstocks — Once again, I begrudgingly put these on the list, but they are a comfortable summer shoe and have a funky, laid-back look to them. Guys, just please don’t wear them with socks. I beg of you! Short sleeve button-up — Throw off that suit and tie and roll up your sleeves. A short-sleeve button-up is a fun, cool piece for any men’s look. Find one in a pattern that speaks to you.

CATS LOOKING FOR NEXT LEADER MATT OVERING movering@kykernel.com

A quartet of quarterbacks is vying for the starting spot in 2014. Freshmen Drew Barker and Reese Phillips, and sophomores Patrick Towles and Jalen Whitlow all have said this spring that they believe they have a shot at leading the offense. One definitive starting quarterback could lead the Cats to a bowl berth. The last season the Cats had an outright starter throughout the season (Mike Hartline in 2010) was the last bowl season for UK. Since that year, UK fans have seen Morgan Newton, Matt Roark, junior quarterback Maxwell Smith, Towles and Whitlow starting behind center for at least one game. Towles has three years of eligibility after redshirting last season. Smith and Whitlow split snaps last year. Smith won’t be involved in the quarterback race this spring because of offseason shoulder surgery. Phillips, a redshirt last year, still has four years of eligibility. The only action he has re-

ceived in a UK uniform was in last year’s spring game. UK fans have yet to see Barker, a 4-star prospect and No. 1 recruit from the state of Kentucky according to Rivals, perform anything other than a TV advertisement in a UK uniform. Offensive coordinator Neal Brown said that he and his staff will be patient in selecting a quarterback, but he wants a leader to emerge as soon as possible. “I want to get it whittled down, from a reps standpoint,” Brown said. “We want to name a starter sooner than we did last year, but I’m not going to give us a false deadline. I want to get it done faster. I think it’s important to the football team.” Sophomore wide receiver Jeff Badet said that each quarterback has looked good behind center this spring. “I think all of them have done a good job,” Badet said. “They were so good, I couldn’t tell who was behind center.”

JALEN WHITLOW THE VETERAN DUAL-THREAT COACH STOOPS: “Starting with Jalen, I think Jalen has improved.” OC NEAL BROWN: “Our quarterback play has been better than it was last year. Jalen is better now than he was when we finished (against) Tennessee.” WHITLOW: “It’s an open process. I’m coming in trying to do better. Of course I want to win the job. I’m just trying to work every day and get better. (Coach) has split (reps) up every day. There’s no set thing that we do every day. I feel way better. I spent that game focusing on getting myself better.”

PATRICK TOWLES

DREW BARKER THE NEWCOMER OC NEAL BROWN: “It’s all the stuff until the ball is snapped for him. He was in the huddle in high school, now he’s in no huddle. That’s a big transition for him.” “I know our fan base and everybody is excited about him ... but technically, he is in his second semester of high school. We’re lucky to have him here, but I think we have to keep our expectations realistic.” BARKER: “I feel like I’m right in the mix of things. They have already had the offense. I’m learning things day by day, but I feel like I’m right in the mix. It’s a good friendly competition.”

THE DARK HORSE COACH STOOPS: “Patrick is definitely improved. He’s much quicker with his release. I’m encouraged.” OC NEAL BROWN: “Towles has really improved fundamentally, which gives him a chance. He’s gotten a lot better, ball is getting out on time, his feet are putting him in a position to throw the ball, which is a big improvement, I’m excited about that.” TOWLES: “It’s frustrating at first, when things aren’t as going as well as they should be, I feel like I could get that done. But about three-tofour games into the season, I recognized that this was a great opportunity. There’s no reason why I can’t improve and get better. It was frustrating, but I’m glad that I did it now.”

OC NEAL BROWN: “Reese is getting reps with the first group for the first time really.”

REDSHIRTED LAST YEAR, HAS NOT PLAYED IN A COLLEGE GAME
