‘Noah’ doesn’t overreach timeout features
I struggle over whether to call Darren Aronofsky’s latest film “Noah” an adapted screenplay or an original screenplay. I can only say that it’s the closest a script can get to an original screenplay without actually being an original screenplay. Or as Aronofsky puts it, it’s “the leastbiblical biblical film ever made.” The story of Noah is told within a few chapters of the book of Genesis. So creating a 138-minute epic — especially one that spans the course of several years — calls for some sort of fabrication to give it the legs it needs to stand on. These legs come in the form of ficKYLE ARENSDORF tional characters such as celestial guardians sent to watch over mankind Kernel called the “Watchers,” and a young columnist girl (Emma Watson) orphaned by a mass killing of her people. A secondary plotline is based around Watson’s character and is used to drive the second act of the film. While I won’t disclose the particulars, there’s a variable that Noah (Russell Crowe) must decipher while still yielding to what he perceives to be the commands of “The Creator.” While aspects of the film are completely fabricated, Aronofsky said he wanted to make sure the film was still “truthful to every word that’s in (the Bible).” If you ref-
erence Genesis 7:13 of the King James Bible, you’ll notice that Aronofsky doesn’t exactly stay true to his statement. Despite this small oversight, his interpretation of what could have happened is completely plausible, and coincides directly with the sort of revolt and scorn that prophets could have dealt with in their efforts to do what they thought was right. Abraham, another noted prophet from the Bible, faced the same sort of persecution and contempt from his people and family when he put the wishes of God before the needs of the masses. “Noah” is an overall successful venture that all but cements Aronofsky’s place as an auteur of our generation, with his films reaching out to other-worldly bearings as a way to answer finite worldly questions. He begins “Noah” with a brief introduction of the creation and fall of man, told through voiced-over sequences reminiscent of a Terrence Malick film. The similarities between Aronofsky and Malick, one of the most noted auteurs in film, are striking — namely their constant quest to encompass the “big” questions and the role that human frailty plays in the answers to those questions. “Noah” is hard to watch, as it is a dark interpretation of the story. But it illuminates the internal struggle, as well as the external persecution, that must have come from communication with a higher power.
Wildcat named Truman Scholar WILL WRIGHT wwright@kykernel.com
A political science junior and member of UK’s tennis team will be awarded $30,000 after being named a Truman Scholar for her work in public service. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards students involved in public service with a scholarship to help support the students through graduate school, according to the organization’s website. Grace Trimble of Winchester, Ky., is the 13th UK student to be given this award. “To me, the scholarship is so much more than the $30,000,” Trimble said. “There’s such a vast network of Truman scholars that are doing incredible things. I want to learn from them.” When she was 17 years old, Trimble founded a nonprofit education program that tutored kids and taught them how to play tennis. “(It) teaches them character and integrity,” Trimble said. “Ever since (creating the non-profit), I’ve always had a heart for service and bridging the gap between the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor.” The program started with eight kids, she said, but ex-
panded over the years to reach about 80 kids in the program at one point. Children were tutored for one hour then taught tennis for one hour, she said. “It’s not just about tennis and school work,” Trimble said. The program also teaches kids to be dedicated to their studies. Trimble was also part of a trip to Africa where she taught children how to play tennis. The award may give Trimble an edge during the graduate school application process, she said. “It takes a lot of pressure off of me, that’s for sure,” she said. “(I’m) trying to go to one of the best schools in the nation because of the scholarship.” Trimble is planning to obtain a Master’s degree in public administration with an emphasis on nonprofit management. She was one of 59 students from 52 colleges selected for the award this year out of 655 total candidates. The last UK student to get the award was Corinne Keel in 2008. “By some miracle I’m in this position,” Trimble said. “I’m very excited because this means when I put Truman Scholar on my resume ... it may help me get into graduate school.”

UK travels to Texas JOSHUA HUFF sports@kykernel.com
Two teams caught in the SEC rat-race square off Friday as UK baseball heads to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M in a three-game weekend series. Both teams enter the game tied in the SEC standings with a 7-8 conference record and coming off weekday victories. No. 19 UK (24-13) steered from its usual high scoring, pitching its way to a 4-2 victory Tuesday against No. 10 Louisville. Meanwhile, Texas A&M (23-15) pounded Abilene Christian, 20-2. The Aggies are also coming off a series win last weekend against No. 18 Vanderbilt, a team that has beaten UK twice. After a disappointing series loss to Missouri last weekend, UK is tied for fourth in the SEC East with Vanderbilt. Texas A&M is in a threeway tie for fourth in the West division. The Cats will send Friday mainstay starter A.J. Reed to the mound to face an Aggies offense that is averaging 5.8 runs per game. The junior has a 6-1 record to go with a 2.29 earned
run average and has a team-high 42 strikeouts. He is coming off a no-decision last Friday against Missouri where he threw a career-high 10 strikeouts. On the season, Texas A&M is led by junior Cole Lankford who is hitting .329 with 33 RBIs this season. Freshman Nick Banks is hitting .320 with 12 RBIs this year. The Cats will look to use the momentum gained from the Louisville win to even their SEC record. UK has 15 conference games remaining this season. “Every series in our conference is a big series,” Reed said. “Obviously you want to win every game but the main thing is to come out here and win the series.”
Next Game Who: UK vs. Texas A&M When: Friday, 7:35 p.m. Where: College Station, Texas
Quotes from Calipari:
I said, ‘You right now are in the middle of this draft, maybe as low as the lottery. But can you imagine?’ And that was our talk. And when he came back, he basically said, ‘You know, Coach, I’m in no hurry to leave. I love going to school. I’m gonna be really close to my degree. I still have to grow as a player. And we left something on the table there that I’d like to try and get.’” – Calipari on his conversation with Willie Cauley-Stein before he announced his return.
Most of the interviews, I walked in, I knew people, I was very comfortable. You could tell. With Mr. O’Reilly, I was scared to death.”

My wife and I, we wanted to start a fund ... That every player that’s ever played for me, whether they be at Mass., Memphis or Kentucky, can request a grant for their children’s education.” – Calipari on his proposal to the NCAA to start a fund for his former players.
The only time I learned about it is when the game ended and then Anthony Davis and Darius (Miller) and John Wall and the guys were in there. I can’t remember if one of them said to me, ‘You’re going to Lakers.’ It might have been Anthony. I said, ‘Come on, no, I’m not going to the Lakers.’” – Calipari on Anthony Davis telling him about the Lakers rumors.

Young to enter NBA
Freshman guard James Young will enter his name into the NBA Draft, according to a press release from UK Athletics. Young averaged 14.3 points per game in his freshman season, which ranked second on the team. The Rochester Hills native is the No. 16 prospect in the 2014 NBA Draft, according to DraftExpress. He is projected as a first-round pick in most mock drafts. “My time at Kentucky has been special to me, something I’ll always treasure, but I feel that I’m ready to take the next step to the NBA,” Young said in the release. “I’ve learned more this year, on and off the court, about life from Coach Cal and the staff and appreciate all of their guidance and support.” Young is the first UK player from this season to announce his departure for the NBA. He is the 11th freshman to leave after one season since head coach John Calipari has been at UK. “I’m excited for James and his family and the decision he’s come to,” Calipari said in the release. “From day one, the NBA people who came to our practices in the preseason raved about him.” STAFF REPORT
