Walk seeks to break down ‘dangerous dog’ stereotypes More than 100 people and their pets gathered Saturday in Thoroughbred Park to raise awareness about prejudice against some dog breeds. The Bully Breed Awareness Walk was organized by the PAWS organization, or Promoting Animal Welfare and Service. The UK student-run volunteer organization is dedicated to ending stereotypical assumptions about “dangerous dogs” or “bully” breeds such as pit bulls, bulldogs and Doberman pinschers.

Lights flashed and heavy bass pumped out of Buster’s Billiards & Backroom on Saturday night. Hundreds of people dressed in outlandish outfits and funny costumes for the 45th Beaux Arts Ball, a dance and fashion party organized by College of Design students for charity. The electronic music, light shows and costumes came together for a night where everyone could bring out their creative side. Besides being a charity event, Beaux Arts “is really an assimilation of all types of art,” said Karen Tate, an architecture junior and one of the five students who organized the party. “It’s a really good showcase for up-and-coming people.” The event raised money for the Kentucky Center for

the Arts Foundation, the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center, the Home of the Innocents and Broke Spoke Community Bike Sports. Many of the musicians and other artists were from the Lexington and Central Kentucky area and saw Beaux Arts as a way to show their pieces to a large and artistic crowd. Three architecture seniors created a tunnel with walls that lit up like a desktop screensaver. “All three of us wanted to build it full scale,” said Thomas Grubbs, who worked for about a week building the tunnel. “Beaux Arts kind of gave us that opportunity.” For many others, the party was an opportunity to dress up in costumes, dance and socialize. “It’s all about the people … who get to express a side of themselves that they normally don’t get to express,” said Bailey Reed, an animal science

sophomore. “The first year I didn’t know (that people dressed in costumes) and showed up in a dress. I learned the next year to wear a costume.” One couple wore Pac-Man costumes, two men dressed as Hunter S. Thompson and some sported other flashy, and sometimes revealing, attire. “Beaux Arts is all about a good time, letting lose and expressing yourself,” said architecture senior Adrian Elder. “You’ve got to look good and you’ve got to have fun.” In 2012, the most recent year included on the website, Beaux Arts pulled in more than $45,000 for various charities. The total amount of money raised at this year’s event has not yet been released. “You get to come out and have a good time,” said Aj Crush, a business marketing sophomore at Northern Kentucky University. “And it’s all for a good cause.”

Eight former Cats make NBA Playoffs By Brett Bibbins sports@kykernel.com
The first round of the 2014 NBA Playoffs began Saturday as 16 teams continued their quests for an NBA Title. This year, eight former Cats made the playoff rosters, one less than last season’s total. In the Eastern Conference, six former UK players will take the court in the playoffs. Former UK star John Wall (2009-10) and the 5seed Washington Wizards will take on the 4-seed Chicago Bulls and former Cat Nazr Mohammed (1995-98). Wall had a breakout season for the Wizards en route to his first All-Star Game. Wall averaged 19.3 points, 8.8 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game, includ-
ing an 80.5 percent mark from the free-throw stripe. For the Bulls, Mohammed only played seven minutes per game. He scored 1.6 points and pulled down 2.2 rebounds per game. Mohammed’s scoring equals his lowest average since his rookie season in 1998-99. The matchup of the 3seed Toronto Raptors and the 6-seed Brooklyn Nets is host to three former Cats. Patrick Patterson (2007-10) and Chuck Hayes (2001-05) suit up for the Raptors, while Marquis Teague (2011-12) plays for the Nets. Patterson played 48 games with the Raptors this season after being traded from Sacramento. He averaged 9.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Hayes played 12.8 minutes a game for the Raptors this
season, averaging 2.2 points and 3.6 rebounds, while shooting a career-high 83.3 percent from the free-throw line. Teague struggled to find a way onto the court for the Nets this season, only playing in 21 games. Teague averaged three points, 1.4 assists and one rebound in 9.6 minutes of play. The final former UK player from the Eastern Conference is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (2011-12) of the 7-seed Charlotte Bobcats. Kidd-Gilchrist struggled in his sophomore season in the league. He averaged 7.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 0.7 steals per game. In the Western Conference, two former UK players take the floor in pursuit of a title. In the matchup of the 4seed Houston Rockets and
5-seed Portland Trailblazers, Terrence Jones (201012) looks for more success in his second-ever playoff appearance. Last season, Jones only saw floor time in two playoff games. Jones had a career year for Houston, averaging 12.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 0.7 steals per game. The final former UK player in action in the playoffs this season is Tayshaun Prince (1998-02) of the 7seed Memphis Grizzlies. Prince was an everyday starter for the Grizzlies this season, averaging six points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 25.6 minutes per game. The playoffs will be televised on TNT, ESPN and ABC throughout the week.

Softball sees first mercy-rule loss
Cats win road series
Cats start Sunday with 9-game winning streak, but fall on Sunday
Baseball tops Texas A&M, 2-1
By Justin Chartrand sports@kykernel.com
UK softball started Sunday’s matchup with Arkansas (26-22, 4-14 SEC) like it did on Friday and Saturday. The No. 10 Cats were once again trailing 3-0, but this time, there was no surging comeback. UK (38-9, 12-6 SEC)
had a nine-game winning streak entering Sunday’s game. It was snapped as the Cats suffered their first runrule loss of the season, 8-0, to the Razorbacks. The Cats struggled from the plate, going 3-for-21 in the loss. “We didn’t do a very good job adjusting to the pitcher or the umpire,” UK

head coach Rachel Lawson said. “I just felt like we were a little tentative. We were on our heels a little bit and we let (Arkansas freshman pitcher Grace Moll) get ahead in the count and we didn’t go deep in very many counts either.” The Razorbacks teed off on freshman pitcher Shannon Smith, plating four runs in the first two innings. UK freshman pitcher Meagan Prince came on in relief in the top of the fourth inning and allowed four runs in the top of the sixth, putting Arkansas in prime position to complete its run-rule win. Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Nunley was the key to the Cats’ victories on Friday and Saturday, entering as a reliever in both games. “Nunley is incredibly strong; she is very tough. I mean her best asset is that she can locate, she knows how to attack the zone,” Lawson said. “She is one of the reasons why we won the
series.” Nunley marched the Cats to victory, tossing six strikeouts and allowing only two runs and eight hits in the 10 innings she pitched. The Cats took advantage of Nunley’s strong relief as sophomore infielder Nikki Sagermann smashed home runs in both games and batted .600 at the plate. “As a team, Friday and Saturday’s wins were pretty big,” Sagermann said. “Obviously (Sunday) didn’t go as we would have liked it to, but Arkansas is a really great ball club and it’s hard to beat a team three times in a row.” The Cats are gearing up to hit the road as they face in-state rival Western Kentucky on Tuesday before coming home Friday to face No. 4 Tennessee in a threegame series at John Cropp Stadium. “I’m excited — (we) just got to live to play and get after it,” Sagermann said. “It’s going to be a fun week.”

Every conference series from this point on is a mustwin for UK baseball if it wants to have any chance of winning the SEC. The Cats’ series against Texas A&M this weekend was one they had to have. UK topped Texas A&M in the first two games of the series before falling on Sunday. The 2-1 series victory put the Cats at 9-9 in the SEC. The Cats showed mental attentiveness in the series opener, grinding out a 6-3 win over the Aggies. The win might have been overshadowed by clutch hitting in the ninth inning or by junior A.J. Reed pitching seven scoreless innings, but the Cats’ lack of errors is what kept them in position to win.
This is the same team that committed an astounding five errors in its rubbermatch loss to Missouri last weekend. UK seemed to have learned from its mistake, however. Head coach Gary Henderson preaches mental focus on the field as a key aspect in winning any game. In game two, UK relied on its offensive power to get through the day. Eleven runs, including four batted in from Reed’s four-hit day, was all the Cats needed to win and clinch the series. The series sweep was out of reach for the Cats on Sunday, however, as Texas A&M took advantage of a poor outing from junior Andrew Nelson. Nelson gave up eight runs in four innings, resulting in a 14-2 Aggies win. They’re still within striking distance of Florida’s 126 conference-leading record. But UK still has to have a must-win mentality for every series to make it more than just a chance.

SHRAKE Continued from page 2 conversation. The author and others with an opinion on the matter civilly discussed the arguments in the column, providing points and counterpoints, and thanking each other for the comments along the way. At its best, this is what the opinions page is designed to do.
With hundreds of comments on columns in The New York Times, this concept is executed nationally. Again, it is not necessarily that the commenters either agree or disagree with the writer’s viewpoint, but that as a society, we are willing to own our opinions and have a conversation (even remotely) with those who share and dissent from that opinion. In his time as a reporter for major newspapers in Chicago, Finley Peter Dunne
said it is the job of the newspaper to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. This should be the mantra of opinions pages around the country — we shouldn’t fear the comments section. Because if a column doesn’t rub someone the wrong way and start a conversation, it’s just type on a page. Laura Shrake is a journalism sophomore. Email opinions@kykernel.com.

Scorpio ( Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — Today is a 5 — Watch your stinger... someone could get hurt. Practice restraint. Listen to a loved one's considerations. Hold onto your money. Don't make promises you won't keep. Respectfully decline. Take it slow and easy, tackling urgencies and otherwise recharg-
ing batteries at home. Sagittarius ( Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — Today is a 5 — The momentum short-circuits, and you discover a dead end. Curtail your enthusiasm. Don't fall for an expensive trick. An uncomfortable situation spurs you to action. Postpone a long-distance conversation. Declare breakdowns, stay in communication, and reschedule. Capricorn ( Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Today is a 6 — Friends help you advance. Exceptional patience is required. A theory doesn't pan out. Go beyond the minimum required. Consider the consequences of the words you speak. You get to choose your own perspective, your own self-image. Aquarius ( Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — Today is a 5 — Don't over-extend or push yourself too hard. Support (and be supported by) your friends. Collaborate with responsibilities. Make your place more comfortable, instead of traveling. Don't repeat a mistake... it would get expensive. Pisces ( Feb. 19-March 20) — Today is a 5 — With the support of your friends, you can get through anything. Stash valuables in a safe place. Keep a positive view, and move forward one step at a time. Progress could seem stopped, blocked or impeded. MCT
