Baseball must take it one game at a time
Last week, UK had enough of a cushion in the win column to only worry about improving its seeding in the SEC Tournament. But after losing three straight games, the Cats’ only concern should be winning one game at a time to secure their NCAA Tournament berth. Beating Tennessee in a convincing 15-1 fashion on Thursday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium was a step toKEVIN ERPENBECK wards earning that berth. Junior first baseman Kernel and pitcher A.J. Reed was columnist solid again as he pitched eight innings of shutout baseball. It was certainly a relief to see Reed return to his dominant self after pitching only three innings against Ole Miss last weekend in the Rebels’ pounding of the Cats.
Reed will have to continue his usual dominance on the mound if UK is to have the best chance at winning down the road. There is very little room for error for the Cats with nine games to go, and the rest of the starting pitching isn’t anywhere near as effective as Reed. His last couple starts in the season are must-wins for the team. Pitching will certainly be key if the Cats want to make it to the NCAA Tournament, but it’s hard to trust a staff that gives up double digit runs in nearly every game that Reed does not take the mound. Sophomore pitcher Dylan Dwyer, who starts Saturday’s game against the Volunteers, has shown improvement since being named a weekend pitcher. But with so little experience in that role, it’s unclear how much longer Dwyer can keep that success going. Thursday, though, the Cats were one win closer to achieving the season-ending goal. Now UK has to keep the success going one game at a time.

Former UK guard inks with ‘Roc Nation Sports’ agency
Former UK guard James Young announced on his Twitter account on Thursday that he has become the newest member of Roc Nation Sports, the agency founded by musician Jay-Z. Roc Nation Sports was founded in assocation with Jay Z’s music label Roc Nation. Roc Nation Sports’ roster includes athletes such as professional baseball players CC Sabathia and Robinson Cano, professional basketball James Young players Skylar Diggins and Kevin
Durant and professional football players Geno Smith, Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. Young completed his freshman year at UK averaging 14.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Cats. He was a two-time SEC Freshman of the Week and was voted into the All-SEC Freshman team last season. Having entered the 2014 NBA Draft on April 17, Young is projected as a first-round draft pick with many experts labeling him as a Top-15 prospect. STAFF REPORT
‘Slice’ joins Calipari’s staff
UK men’s basketball hired Barry ‘Slice’ Rohrssen as an assistant coach on Thursday, according to a UK Athletics press release. Rohrssen joins the Cats’ staff after serving as an assistant at the University of Pittsburgh during the 2013-14 season in his second coaching stint with the university. Rohrssen has 19 years of college coaching experience. During his first stint at Pittsburgh, he guided Barry Rohrrsen the Panthers to a 133-33 record, four Big East championships, three NCAA Sweet 16 berths and five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. “It’s an honor to be part of a program that has the greatest tradition in the history of college basketball,” Rohrssen said in a press release. “I was humbled when John Calipari asked me to become a member of his
outstanding staff. Coach Cal embodies the meaning of the word ‘success.’” He was also the head coach at Manhattan College for five years. His best year came in 2008-09 when he guided the Jaspers to a 16-14 record. Rohrssen has a positive record academically, graduating every player who stayed four years at Manhattan and improving the school’s basketball NCAA Academic Progress Rate. “Barry has been part of my coaching family for the past 30-some years,” head coach John Calipari said in the press release. “I’m thrilled with what he brings to our staff, both on court and off, in terms of coaching, recruiting and mentoring these young men.” Rohrssen fills one of two spots on Calipari’s staff after Orlanda Antigua took the head coaching position at South Florida and brought Rod Strickland to his coaching staff.

Growing up on camera
Perhaps the most anticipated film of the summer among enthusiasts is Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood.” It’s a film that will revolutionize the way we look at time-lapse filming on July 11. Linklater has been fascinated with time-lapse throughout his film career and has made it a theme in just about all of his films. But in “Boyhood,” he KYLE makes it his subject. ARENSDORF The film documents the life of Mason (Ellar Assistant Coletrane) from ages six to Opinions 18. We see his relationship Editor with his divorced mother (Patricia Arquette) and father (Ethan Hawke), his relationship with his sister (Lorelei Linklater) and the way he reacts to growing through the difficult ages of boyhood and young adulthood. The story of a child with divorced parents isn’t a new concept, but what sets this film apart is that Linklater didn’t cast different actors to play six-year-old Mason and 18-yearold Mason; it’s Coletrane playing both. Filming began in 2002 when Linklater
was between releasing “Waking Life” and “Before Sunset,” and Coletrane was still a small child. What unfolded was unprecedented in film history, as short segments from Mason’s life were filmed each year for 12 years. Crowds at the Berlin International Film Festival in February caught the first glimpse of “Boyhood,” which opened to rave reviews from critics and patrons alike. The film won three awards at the festival and earned Linklater the Berlin Silver Bear for best director. Linklater’s infatuation with how we maneuver through life and vice-versa is notable. His most well-known contribution to film is his “Before” series, a three-part series that tracks the 18-year relationship of Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) throughout an 18-year period from the first film release to the third. The first installment in the series, “Before Sunrise,” came out in 1995. Nine years later, “Before Sunset” was released. Last year, his third installment, “Before Midnight,” was released and earned Linklater his second Oscar nomination. Regardless of what you think of “Boyhood” come July 11, it’s already great. It’s just a matter of whether or not you’re able to see its greatness.

Students relax during Cram Jam Laura Shrake lshrake@kykernel.com

Accounting and finance senior Ethan Williams aims at the cue ball while playing pool at the Cram Jam on Thursday. UK students gathered amid rows of free food, koozies and t-shirts in Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, taking a break from the stress of dead week at Student Government’s Cram Jam. “We do this to give students a break from finals and enjoy themselves as they go into the last few days of the semester,” Ann Dickson, the director of events for Student Government, said. 2,500 bright green t-shirts were laid out and students struggled to get to their feet in sumo wrestler inflatables on the gym floor. Integrated strategic communications sophomore Allie Thieneman supported Dickson’s mission for the event. “I like coming for the free food and t-shirts … and puppies and massages,” Thieneman said. “I just think it’s a good way to de-stress from studying and have some fun.” This year’s Cram Jam cost about $25,000, Dickson said, and was sponsored by organizations like the UK Bookstore and UK Credit Union. UK Dining Services catered. She said planning for the event started in early February, when the events committee met weekly to “hash out” what needed to be done, starting with the Kentucky Derby-themed t-shirts. “Last year was summer-themed,” Dickson said. “But with the (Kentucky) Derby in two days, and being in the horse capital of the world, we wanted something people could wear and represent that.” Dickson estimated that last year’s event brought about 2,300 to 2,400 people to Memorial Coliseum and expected this year’s turnout to be about the same. New de-stressing activities this year included bringing in puppies from the humane society as well as pool tables. Other activities included cornhole, inflatable obstacle courses and games with prizes like “I survived Finals Week 2014” tank tops. “It seems to be going great,” said David Kinstley, SGA’s dining director. “Very crowded, obviously … everybody seems to be enjoying it.”

FLAT ON YOUR FACE AWARD
The acoUstiKats sang Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” during their initial performance on NBC’s “The Sing-Off” in December.
THE
The Flat On Your Face Award goes to Jon Hood's tires, which never had a chance when they came face-to-face with a rogue slasher in the Memorial Coliseum parking lot in November. The four tires, which previously supported the senior guard's Toyota truck, put up a good fight, but they could not withstand the unnamed assailant's vicious blade. Oh well, it was our fourthmost read story of the year, so we appreciate the sacrifice.
GOOD JOB GOOD EFFORT AWARD THE
THE
YOUJUST PROVED OUR POINT AWARD
The You Just Proved Our Point Award goes to the AcoUstiKittens, the devoted fans of the a cappella group the AcoUstiKats, who appeared on national television this year in a singing competition. The ‘Kittens fought for their ‘Kats after our editor-inchief called out the group for performing a highly offensive song about blurring the lines between sex and sexual assault. It was a great day for UK's image nationwide, and the comment section rang with ignorance and chauvinism. But those comments were a perfect example of the issues with the song choice itself. Don’t get too riled up now, ‘Kittens.
THE
IT WAS ALL JUST A DREAM AWARD
The It Was All Just a Dream Award goes to the UK police and Kirwan Tower resident Christian Porter for unnecessarily waking up the entire campus in the peaceful pre-dawn hours of a Tuesday in February. Phone calls and text messages shook students from their slumber and alerted them to a violent assault and robbery on South Campus. Turns out, Mr. Porter made the event up, costing UKPD its precious “time and resources” and students their coveted cellular data and shut-eye.
The Good Job, Good Effort Award goes to President Eli Capilouto for his failed attempt to contain UK fans after the Cats beat Louisville in the Sweet 16. Capilouto’s campuswide email was intended to corral any potential riots, even going so far as suggesting a hashtag, #RespectTheRivalry, in hopes that it alone would stop thousands from drinking, burning and shouting whatever they pleased in joyous celebration. It was an honorable effort.
GOLDEN FORKS AWARDS Years ago — or so the legend goes — an embittered Kernel editor came back to the office upset, hurt and insulted. A prominent campus figure had unfairly harangued the young reporter for an offense that he did not commit. It was at that point, in the heat and sweat of tension, that the young editor vowed revenge. From those feelings of hate, the Golden Forks
THE
were born. As a testament to that young reporter we take it upon ourselves to strike back with venomous pleasure at those who have wronged the mighty “Fourth Estate.” Editor’s note: OK, OK that’s a lie. We’re a bunch of sarcastic, immature college students who feel like venting their frustrations at the end of the year. It’s unfortunate that some of you
must bear the brunt of that. But take comfort in the fact that in about a month the summer Kernel begins, under the direction of Nick Gray, and then comes the fall with the woman you love to hate, Morgan Eads. You are encouraged to make the lives of these two a living hell. Until then, if you’re upset, feel free to send in letters to the editor, as always.
RAISE THE ROOF AWARD
The Raise the Roof Award goes to The Lex for literally having to raise a new roof. The apartment complex had two apartments condemned in January after a floor (which was also someone's roof) collapsed under the weight of more than 100 people in one apartment. Note to Lex residents and UK students: If you're at The Lex, don’t party with 100 people in the same apartment.

A UK student ran onto the Johnson Center field before the start of CSF’s World’s Largest Water Balloon Fight on Sept. 6, 2013, and was apprehended by student security volunteers.
LEAST ORIGINAL AWARD
The Least Original Award goes to the celebrators on State Street, who partied not only after UK made it to the Sweet 16 for the 40th time, but also after UK lost in the championship game. While police said it was more peaceful compared with past celebrations, one partier didn’t fancy it. “Lexington just doesn’t know how to riot anymore,” he said.
But this is the last issue, so they won’t get printed. We’ll read them though. Have a good summer. This blurb was adapted from the April 28, 1989, edition of the Golden Forks Awards.
FUTURE POLITICIAN AWARD
The Future Politician Award goes to outgoing Student Government President Roshan Palli for following the grand tradition of UK student body presidents who write a lot, but say absolutely nothing. It's your turn, Jake Ingram.
MAKING THE MOST
OF A STICKY SITUATION
SORRY I’M NOT SORRY AWARD
The Sorry I'm Not Sorry Award goes to UK Parking for taking away accessible parking spots on a campus where they are already few and far between. The spaces next to Patterson Office Tower and the Main Building were removed in favor of green space, now forcing students and faculty with disabilities to travel even farther to class, which completely defeats the purpose of having an accessible spot. UK Parking feels for those who have to walk, but really, they're not that sorry.

AWARD
The Making the Most of a Sticky Situation Award goes to the UK Supreme Court, who evaluated the use of duct tape in a hearing for the Student Government presidential election. Imagine how silly it would be if they argued about important things like posters — oh wait. We guess duct tape doesn't fix everything.
THE
SORRY TO BURST YOUR BUBBLE AWARD
The Sorry to Burst Your Bubble Award goes to the Christian Student Fellowship and the university. Nobody accepted the blame after CSF’s annual World's Largest Water Balloon Fight ended up with a student “security” volunteer putting a dangerous chokehold on another student who rushed the field. The university passed the blame onto CSF for not having a security plan for an event of more than 11,000 people. Remember, it's love thy neighbor, not choke thy neighbor.
THE
BIG DOOKIE AWARD
The Big Dookie Award goes to Sen. Mitch McConnell for the double-trouble that resulted from one of his campaign ads this spring. Not only did McConnell mistakenly feature Duke basketball players in the ad meant he meant to use UK, but he replaced the incorrect clip with an image of Julius Randle without UK’s permission. For a UK College of Law graduate who has represented Kentucky for almost 30 years, you would think he could tell the difference between a Blue Devil and a Wildcat.

Softball faces Georgia after Louisville win
timeout sports
JUSTIN CHARTRAND sports@kykernel.com
A late-inning rally against in-state rival Louisville sends a confident UK softball team into its last three games of the season against No. 16 Georgia on Friday in Athens, Ga. Wednesday’s win against the Cardinals was the first time No. 10 UK (41-11, 13-8 SEC) had won at Ulmer Stadium since 2006. UK’s win also marked the first in over a decade that the Cats had completed a season sweep over the Cardinals. Georgia (39-12, 12-9 SEC) serves as the Cats’ last chance at improving their conference standing before entering conference tournament play. The Bulldogs are led from the circle by sophomore pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson, who has 216 strikeouts on the season, holds a 2.22 earned run average and has 24 wins on the mound.
UK’s offense has struggled against tough pitching. The Cats are second to last in batting average in the SEC and have totaled 273 strikeouts this season, which is second in the SEC. UK’s saving grace this season has come from two talented sophomores in pitcher Kelsey Nunley and infielder Nikki Sagermann. Sagermann has hit 11 home runs this season and leads the team with 42 runs batted in. Her two-run double in the seventh inning added to UK’s rally to break a tie and defeat Louisville. “Honestly, my whole approach at bat has been just to execute for my team,” Sagermann said. Nunley has 21 wins, with a 2.13 earned run average and 141 strikeouts this season. She picked up the win in relief on Wednesday. “(Nunley) is a huge winner and she loves to win games,” UK head coach Rachel Lawson said. “She is incredibly smart and adaptable.”
