President Barack Obama makes a statement on the situation in Iraq prior to departing the south lawn of the White House in Washington for a trip to South Dakota on June 13.
U.S. politicians meet over situation in Iraq Congress agrees not to renew large military presence in Baghdad By William Douglas and John Moritz MCT
WASHINGTON — When President Barack Obama meets with congressional leaders Wednesday about the deteriorating situation in Iraq, he’ll hear plenty of agreement that something must be done — but little consensus about what that should be. Obama will meet with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.; and House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., at the White House for the first time since Sunni Muslim rebels started a lightning-fast march toward Baghdad. They’ll report broad bipartisan agreement in Congress not to return a large U.S. military presence to Iraq to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria terrorist group as it bears down on Baghdad, something Obama
also rules out. Many also want to push the Iraqi government out in favor of a more inclusive coalition, though it was unclear how fast that could happen and whether it would do anything to stop ISIS forces from attacking the capital. After that, members of Congress disagree over the most-discussed options, including U.S. airstrikes or working with Iran to protect the Iraqi government. And some congressional leaders are going to the White House apparently with few concrete ideas for Iraq. Boehner, for example, said Tuesday that he wanted to hear what Obama planned, but he offered no idea of what he wants to do. “The speaker expects the president to offer a coherent strategy to ensure that Iraq does not descend further into lawless barbarism,” said Michael Steel, Boehner’s spokesman. “We spent years, vast sums of money
and, most importantly, thousands of American lives to improve Iraq’s security and make America safer. Squandering that legacy would be a tragic mistake.” Lawmakers split over the prospect of working with Iran, a Shiite Muslim-led government that’s eager to help the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who’s also a Shiite. The Obama administration said Monday that it would talk with Iran, but it ruled out any military cooperation. Sen. Lindsey Graham, RS.C., suggested that the U.S. work with Iran, especially if Iran’s forces and diplomats could help safeguard the employees at the massive U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. With the Sunni forces within 40 miles of Baghdad, Obama is deploying 275 U.S. military personnel to Iraq to provide support and security to U.S. interests there. Marine and Army troops have already moved into the em-
bassy to bolster security. “I know that the Iranian agenda for Iraq is different from ours, they are agents of discontent, they’re state sponsors of terror, but I live in the real world,” Graham said. “I don’t want it to be said that Lindsey Graham closed a door to something that may have provided them security,” he said. “At the end of the day, if the president has to discuss with the Iranians, a dialogue with the Iranians to protect our people, do it.” But Rep. Mike Rogers, RMich., the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, on Tuesday vehemently rejected U.S. cooperation with Iran on Iraq. “Iranians were in Iraq during the entire time U.S. servicemen and -women were there,” Rogers said on MSNBC. “And the Department of Defense believes as many as 600 people may have been killed, U.S. blood on their hands through their actions in Iraq.”
UK's Superfund Research Center received a $12.2 million grant on Monday from the National Institutes of Health. The Nutrition and Superfund Chemical Toxicity grant was administered through the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, who is one of five colleges in the university who provide manpower for the center. The center's research focuses on the prevention of Superfund sites through topics such as toxic limitations and nutrition. The Environmental Protection Agency has labeled over 200 Superfund sites around the state. The EPA defines a Superfund site as an "uncontrolled or abandoned place where hazardous waste is located, possibly affecting local ecosystems or people." The EPA also released a national priority list of 157 sites that have released or have the potential to release hazardous or contaminated material; 14 of those sites are in Kentucky. "Our biomedical research goal is to help offset the negative health impacts that can occur when humans are exposed to toxic chemicals, thus improving health and disease outcomes, which can be associated with such exposures,” said Bernhard Hennig, center director and professor of nutrition and toxicology in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, in a press release. “The team is also looking at the impacts of such exposures on prenatal development.” STAFF REPORT

NBA Draft: Best, worst places for Randle, Young The NBA Draft begins from New York City on June 26 with one of the more highly regarded draft classes in the last decade. The class includes UK freshmen Julius Randle and James Young, who are almost certainly slated to be first round picks after solid freshmen camNICK GRAY paigns in Lexington. Kernel Columnist So what are each prospect's best and worst-case scenarios come next week? Consider where most scouts rank Randle (lottery) and Young (late lottery to Top 20) and what NBA teams need. Throw away possible trades and discount unforeseen drops on draft night. Of course Randle could fit well in Miami, just like Young could flourish as a backup behind James Harden in Houston. As fun as it is to think about it, those options are not realistic. PHOTO BY EMILY WUETCHER | STAFF
UK freshmen Julius Randle and James Young are both Top 20 propsects for next week’s NBA Draft after solid freshman seasons in Lexington.
Randle's best — Los Angeles Lakers, No. 7 It is no secret that Randle wants to be a Laker. He would be a key player immediately, with Pau Gasol hitting
free agency and the two-man duo of Ryan Kelly and Jordan Hill inspiring little confidence. Randle would help on the glass for the 25th-best rebounding team in the NBA, and his selection would be the first cornerstone of the post-Kobe Bryant era.
Randle's worst — Philadelphia, No. 10 Randle's stock has fallen in the last week as reports about his foot requiring surgery have buzzed through the media. Randle said that he is healthy, and his workouts with the Lakers and others have reportedly gone well. That won't mean his stock won't drop into the late lottery with such a deep draft pool available. The Sixers have the No. 3 pick along with the No. 10 selection and can add one of the top wings in the draft — Duke's Jabari Parker and Kansas's Andrew Wiggins — to a core that already includes guard Michael Carter-Williams and former UK star Nerlens Noel. A team built around Randle, Noel, CarterWilliams and one of the elite wings in the draft would give Philadelphia a young core overflowing with potential
in an ugly Eastern Conference.
Young's best — Chicago, No. 19 Free agency notwithstanding, the Bulls need a wing. Forward Mike Dunleavy started 61 games and played over 34 minutes per game in the playoffs after starting six total games in two seasons at Milwaukee. And Young could sharpen his defense and passing skills under coach Tom Thibodeau, who prides his teams on doing those two things well.
Young's worst — Minnesota, No. 13 Kevin Love's situation will have the Timberwolves trending down in the next few seasons. It's difficult to find success in the Western Conference, as Minnesota found out in Love's tenure. The Timberwolves already have a young wing in Shabazz Muhammad, but his rookie season left a lot to be desired. They also have Corey Brewer and Kevin Martin, who are solid contributors. So Young, if selected here, could be thrown into a team running towards a rebuild. Immediately, it would be a situation that would leave a lot for the former five-star recruit to be desired.
Three players leave football program Three UK football players, including two transfers who were heading into their first year of eligibity in Lexington, left the team as summer classes began earlier this week, UK Athletics spokesman Tony Neely confirmed on Monday. Senior defensive end Alvin Davis Jr. left the team for personal reasons. Davis Jr., a fifth-year senior, will still seek to finish his degree this coming school year. He played in all 36 games the past three years, the majority of which he played special teams. Davis Jr. had 11 4 | Summer Edition | 6.19.14
tackles last year, never solidifying a spot in the two-deep depth chart. Sophomore defensive back Chris Davis and running back Demitrious Davis also left the team for undisclosed reasons, Neely said. The Davis twins transferred to UK from Pittsburgh last year after signing with the Panthers in 2012 out of high school. Both players would have been eligible this season. None of the three players were on scholarship. STAFF REPORT

Renovations to Rupp Arena were to include an exterior overhaul and the addition of a new scoreboard along with new luxury boxes. But Lexington Mayor Jim Gray suspended the project due to declining financial support from UK.
Gray suspends Rupp Arena renovation project By Nick Gray ngray@kykernel.com
Lexington major Jim Gray announced Wednesday that the Rupp Arena renovation effort is suspended, citing the unwillingness of the University of Kentucky to commit to a long-term lease totaling $10.7 million per year. Gray said in a press release that the university sought a smaller project, one that would require “10 or 15 percent” of the original money support that the university initially planned to invest. UK president Eli Capilouto informed Gray and Gov. Steve Beshear of the university’s stance within the last two weeks in separate meetings. Gray said Wednesday that the project was based on the desires of the university. “We designed this arena based on what UK said they needed. But I understand timing and pacing are everything, especially with major projects like this. So we'll adjust and adapt,” he said. University officials did not have an immediate comment on the report. Beshear has been publically in favor of
the project and remained optimistic on Wednesday. “I think the original project is still what Lexington and the university need, and in time, I hope UK will be ready to move forward,” Beshear said. The Lexington Convention Center left its schedule open in 2015 and 2016 for potential renovations and can now move on with a decision. “Lexington Center needs clarity, needs uncertainty removed, so they can sell conventions and conferences for next year and beyond,” Gray said. “I’ve learned after 850 projects in my construction career, never to fall in love with a project. We need to move on. And when the time is right, the plan is ready.” NBBJ and EOP, the architecture firms who were set to work on the project, could not be reached for comment on Wednesday. Lexington Center Corporation, who worked alongside Gray to lead the project, also could not be reached for comment. The Downtown Lexington Corporation asCONTINUED ON PAGE 6

A new way to register A new online course registration and catalog program is instituted and ready for use for freshmen when advising conferences begin on June 23, Don Witt, Associate Provost for Enrollment Management, announced in an email to students on Wednesday. Witt said the system is already open for current students to register for classes as well as for incoming freshmen during their advising conferences. The university worked with Enrollment Management and the Enterprise Application Group's Mobile Portal Workflow Team for more than a year to develop the new registration program. "As a campus community, we are focused on putting students first in everything that we do," Witt said in the email. "For many of our students — particularly our newest ones — the first impression they have of the university is when they pre-register and register for classes. That registration process — and moving forward the process of degree planning — is critical to student success, from retention to graduation." STAFF REPORT
