UK receives record donation NEWS

UK trustee Carol Martin “Bill” Gatton gave the university a $20 million commitment to go toward constructing a new Student Center beginning June 2015, UK president Eli Capilouto announced Thursday in a ceremony at the current Student Center Ballroom. His contribution to the $175 million project constituted the largest gift in the university’s history. The new Student Center was authorized during the Kentucky Legislature’s 2014 session. It is scheduled to be completed in 2017, and will be located at the corner of South Limestone and Avenue of Champions. The current Student Center building, constructed in 1938, will be retained. According to the university, features of the new Student Center will include state-of-the-art student activity and study spaces; dining and retail operations; parking; a bookstore; a health, fitness and recreation center and the new UK Student Visitor Center. The previously largest gift in university history came from Gatton in 1995. It was a $14 million gift to UK’s College of Business and Economics for a building upgrade. The college and the building were later named in his honor.

UK trustee Carol Martin “Bill” Gatton (left), standing with athletic director Mitch Barnhart (right), donated a record $20 million for a new Student Center building that is planned to be built by 2017.

“We’re building not just a student center, but a university center,” Capilouto said. “Mr. Gatton’s inspiring support for his alma mater has a powerful impact on this campus, on our students and faculty, and on our entire Commonwealth.” After accepting his very own framed UK basketball jersey, Gatton

paraphrased a quote from President John F. Kennedy, which says that an investment in education will always give the best results. “I believe that,” Gatton said. “That’s one of the reasons I’m giving what I’m giving.” STAFF REPORT

Joan Rivers dead at age 81

SUSAN DENLEY Los Angeles Times (MCT)

kernel. we do it daily.

Joan Rivers, star of E!'s "Fashion Police," made a living making fun of just about everyone for just about any reason. Rivers died Thursday after complications from throat surgery last week. "My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon," her daughter Melissa said in a statement. But how did this brash comedian be-

come one of the best known fashion critics of our time? In Rivers' case, it took years of hard work and a willingness to do almost anything to break into — and then stay working in — show business. In the 1960s, she did stand-up in comedy clubs and as a guest on shows such as "The Tonight Show." She wrote gags for "Candid Camera" and even devised sketches for Topo Gigio, the puppet mouse who appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show." "I was smart enough to go through any door that opened," Rivers told Terry Gross in an interview on NPR's

"Fresh Air" in June 2012. "I wrote (the) Topo Gigio (sketches) for Ed Sullivan. A friend of mine said — 'They want me to write this stupid thing for Ed Sullivan. It's beneath me.' And I said, 'I'll do it!'” And writing the mouse sketches led to her first gig as a guest on Sullivan's show, where she ended up appearing 21 times, becoming one of the show's more enduring acts. She went on to become the first female host of a late-night talk show, and later turned her interest in fashion into "Live from the Red Carpet," which ran from 1996 to 2004 on the E Network. 9.5.14 | Kentucky Kernel | 3

Rivalry on the mind SPORTS

Women’s soccer thrives on playing Louisville The in-state rivalry between UK and Louisville has always been the most anticipated matchup across all of UK athletics. The games are usually intense, evenly matched, and vary between which team wins each year. But with UK women’s soccer winning three straight years against the Cardinals, that rivalry is starting to look KEVIN ERPENBECK one sided. Kernel Columnist The Cats have a golden opportunity to establish dominance over their Bluegrass enemy when they travel to Louisville on Friday. A win would make it four straight victories against the Cardinals and fifth out of the last six years. It’s not like Louisville has been bad during recent years. The Cardinals have been NCAA Tournament participants two out of the last four years, and were No. 12 in the nation when UK defeated them in 2012. Rankings and records do not matter to the Cats. The team mentally circles the date every year the schedule is released and prepares to

play its best soccer of the year just to earn the bragging rights. “They’re so amped up and excited for this game. They don’t need our urging to get them going,” said head coach Jon Lipsitz before the Cats defeated their rivals 2-0 last year. And they have a legitimate chance to do it again this year. The Cardinals entered the season with 12 freshmen on their roster, five of them being tabbed as starters. Considering UK’s roster only has two freshmen on its roster, the Cats’ experience could prove to be too much for the young Cardinals to handle. UK senior forward Arin Gilliland could also prove to be too much to handle. The reigning SEC Player of the Week is off to another great start this season, recording three goals and four assists in the first four games. If the Cats come out on top, Gilliland can claim a 4-0 record against Louisville during her career; something few UK athletes can match. Friday’s game will still figure to be as intense and heated as any other UK-Louisville matchup. But another Cats win will give them control of this rivalry and more Bluegrass bragging rights.

Cats’ skill too much for Ohio SPORTS

Offensive showcase UK football faces a tough task this weekend against Ohio University. Led by junior Derrius Vick and a host of running backs, the Bobcats bring their five straight bowl appearances and suffocating defense to the heart of the bluegrass. UK opened the seaJOSHUA HUFF son with a drumming of Kernel Columnist UT-Martin displaying a new set of toys. The offense amassed 656 yards of offense in the 59-14 win over the Skyhawks. The Cats will face a Bobcats team that won 17-14 against Kent State. Ohio held the Golden Flashes to just 31 yards of rushing, but allowed Kent State to post 264 yards in the air.

Sophomore Patrick Towles may be without the services of Nebraska transfer Braylon Heard who hurt his ankle during his second (and last) run of the game. Despite his potential absence, the Cats have a plethora of talented running backs to rely on. Shouldering the load will be sophomore Jojo Kemp and freshman Mikel Horton. Both combined for three of the six rushing touchdowns. Ohio will have their hands full against the bigger and faster skill players of UK who are much more talented than those in the Mid-American Conference. The Edge: UK Quarterback Spy UK’s defense caused five turnovers against UT-Martin and face an Ohio offense that had four fumbles during the Kent State contest. That statistic should have the Cats frothing at the mouth. Yet despite the five takeaways, UK was gashed up front as the Skyhawks rushed for 183 yards. Ohio’s Vick will look to take advantage of the inconsistent play up front with his versatile combination of quickness and passing accuracy. During the Kent State game Vick was 18-24 for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 35 yards on eight scrambles. Despite the threat of him leaving the pocket, UK should be more improved this game. Seniors Bud Dupree and

Za’Darius Smith didn’t play up to their potential against UT-Martin and will look at this game as a redemption game. The Edge: UK Sounding the Alarm When Towles threw the ball during the UT-Martin game last weekend, two things happened — either the air raid siren blasted after a touchdown or the chains marched their way up the field. The passing game will be facing a more experienced and physically tougher team in Ohio. Regardless, Kent State was able to throw for nearly 300 yards so UK’s new Swiss army knife of a receiving core should continue their blistering start to the season. Look for freshman Blake Bone to become a bigger contributor in the deep game. With senior Javess Blue questionable, sophomore Ryan Timmons and freshman T.V. Williams will need to step up and will do so. The Edge: UK Overall Edge: UK Ohio is a step above UT-Martin and quite a few steps below UK’s Sept.13 opponent, Florida. But the Cats will need to show the fanbase that last week’s downpour of points was not a fluke. Look for the Cats to ride the wave of momentum over the Bobcats and carry it over into the opening SEC showdown against the Gators. Prediction: UK 35, Ohio 21

UK’s season opener against UTMartin gave the Cats an opportunity to showcase their improvement that was developed through recruiting and offseason workouts. Saturday’s matchup against Ohio University will challenge the young Cats in a different manner. The Cats took care of business in its season opener against UT-Martin, crushing the Skyhawks 59-14. In the game, there was evident improvement on both sides of the ball for the Cats. Saturday’s matchup will be a different story – the Bobcats are not a team that will beat

themselves and will challenge the Cats’ mentally and physically, according to UK head coach Mark Stoops. “It's obviously going to be a much bigger challenge for us with Ohio,” Stoops said. “Looking forward to playing Ohio. Coach (Frank) Solich has been around for a long time and has been extremely successful. He's building a very consistent program there at Ohio.” The Bobcats football program has recently peaked under the command of

head coach Frank Solich, who has been with the program for ten years after a stint in Nebraska. The team has made appearances in five straight bowl games since 2009, winning two. “They return a tremendous amount of experience on defense, a bunch of guys that played very well a year ago,” Stoops said. “So they're a good football team. A real challenge. I was very impressed with their quarterback. I believe that was his first start. He just was very poised, very good quarterback. He can run it and throw it.” Ohio defeated Kent State in a season-opening nail biter, drilling a 44-yard field goal as time expired to take a 17-14 victory over the Golden Flashes. Ohio quarterback Derrius Vick was named Athlon Sports Mid-American Conference Player of the Week after his stellar performance. Vick was 18-for-24 passing, throwing for 262 yards with two touchdowns while also finishing second on the team in rushing with 35 yards. Senior wideout Landon Smith finished with seven receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

One of UK’s focal points for Saturday’s game is on the defensive side of the ball. Stoops wants to see consistency out of his defense that gave up 398 total yards last week, most of which came during a second half that featured some of the same young backups that will play roles in vital spots throughout the rest of the year. “Like I say, there was some good,” Stoops said. “Anytime you go eight, nine possessions with 150 yards and zero points (in the first half), you'll take it. But there are still some things we fundamentally need to get better at. After that I was very discouraged. We need to get some depth and we need some guys to step up and compete. To give up two touchdowns and a bunch of yards the last four possessions is something that we can't do and we won't do.” With the Cats facing off against their first fundamentally sound team with a strong offensive game, the Cats defense will have an opportunity to showcase that consistency that Stoops expects. “They're not going to give you things easy,” Stoops said. “You have to go earn them.”

Volleyball hosts busy weekend at Memorial SPORTS

MADISON TINDER sports@kykernel.com

No. 16 UK volleyball rides the wave of last weekend’s three-game sweep of the Bluegrass Classic into this weekend’s Commonwealth Classic beginning this Friday. Northern Iowa, Creighton, and the University of Southern California will make the trip to Lexington for the six-game tournament.

The Commonwealth Classic pits the four teams against each other in a six-game duel spanning the weekend. The tournament kicks off when UK (3-0) takes on Northern Iowa (21) Friday at 11 a.m. and continues at 5 p.m. when Northern Iowa faces Creighton (2-1). On Saturday, Creighton and USC square off at 11 a.m., followed by USC and Northern

Iowa at 5:30 p.m. The final match of the tournament features the Cats and Creighton at 7:30 p.m. UK enters the tournament coming off a perfect opening-season weekend during last week’s Bluegrass Classic. The Cats will rely on an offense pushed by sophomore outside hitter Anni Thomasson, who led UK with 34 kills in last week’s tournament. Junior setter Megan Bergren narrowly missed a triple-double with 45 assists, 10 digs, and nine kills

against Virginia Tech. Northern Iowa enters the tournament after beating Southeastern Missouri State and Saint Louis University. USC enters the tournament after sweeping their three games in the Community Bankers Volleyball Classic. USC defeated Rider, Arkansas-Little Rock and Pacific University. Creighton University defeated Lipscomb and Utah Valley but fell to Kansas during their first tournament.
