Injuries may derail Cats SPORTS

Running into the Ground Southeastern Conference play begins for UK football this Saturday as they travel to the muggy interior of Florida to face an improved Gator team. Florida will be looking to take a 28th straight game from the Cats. But UK will have JOSHUA HUFF a chance to halt the Kernel Columnist streak if Jojo Kemp and his band of merry running backs (minus Braylon Heard) can perform better. If you play in a game where your quarterback has more rushing attempts than the running backs, against Ohio, then first, how can you talk smack (Jojo Kemp), and second, how can you possible defeat a Florida team that drilled an Eastern Michigan team 65-0. Eastern Michigan had just 80 yards

on the ground, and UK will possibly be without Heard. The Edge: Florida Hooked on a feeling And that feeling is pain. Seriously, two games into the season and the Cats are reeling from injuries. • OL Zach West • WR Javess Blue • RB Braylon Heard • WR Jeff Badet Head coach Mark Stoops has repeatedly stated his worry about the depth of this team. He should be worried, at least for the offense. The potential loss of Blue and Heard will be drastic, as the Cats cannot afford to lose skill players on offense. Sophomore Ryan Timmons can’t catch every ball and Kemp and company haven’t produced without Heard. Which harks back to the loss of West. The offensive line hasn’t played its best lineup yet. A suspension to senior Darrian Miller and Wests’ neck injury has kept the door rotating on the line. Inexperience will doom the Cats. Look for Florida to pressure Patrick Towles early and cause fits in the run game. The Edge: Florida Draining The Swamp So, UK’s offense is in a bit of trouble. Its defense on the other hand, is playing some darn good football. UK has allowed only two touchdowns this season and the Gators have

scored eight touchdowns in its only game this season. So if this were a movie trailer, the main selling point would be a “clash of titans.” UK will have to contend with Florida’s quarterback Jeff Driskel. He completed a career-high 31 passes against Eastern Michigan. It’s hard to give the edge to UK’s secondary in this one, but they have been playing tough. JUCO transfer A.J. Stamps has set the tone for the Cats. His nine tackles and one interception leads the team. Stamps will need to keep an eye out for Florida’s big tight end senior Clay Burton, who set a career high with seven receptions the previous Saturday. To limit deep strikes, the Cats will need to put pressure on Driskel. So that means that senior Bud Dupree and Za’Darius Smith need to make more of an impact on the edges. Both have yet to notch a sack. If they fail to apply pressure, UK will lose this game. Defensive lineman Regie Meant can’t get all the sacks. The Edge: Kentucky Overall Edge: Florida This game is a tough one to crack. Florida doesn’t have much of a resume with just a single game under its belt, but the talent disparity appears to lean the Gators way. Injuries to the offensive side of the ball are a killer. Look for Florida to bottle the run game and make Towles try and win it for UK. Prediction: UK 14, Florida 35

UK looks for SEC validation SPORTS

ANNIE DUNBAR sports@kykernel.com The Florida Gators will be the Cats’ next stepping stone to validate their improvement and solidify their skills on both sides of the ball. Both the Gators and Cats started the 2014 season with a chip on their shoulder after coming off a disappointing 2013 year — Florida ended its season 4-8 overall. With Florida head coach Will Muschamp sitting in the hot seat, the Gators will be chomping at the bit to continue their 27-year winning streak against UK.

(Driskel) is a good football player and he’s got some good weapons with a good system.” MARK STOOPS

UK head coach

Come Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., the Cats’ main focus will be trucking through Muschamp’s specialty defense and the tight grasp of preseason Defensive Player of The Year, cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, III. “They’re very aggressive defensively,” head coach Mark Stoops said. Hargreaves, who is one of the best manto-man cover corners in the conference, led the Gators in interceptions and pass breakups in 2013. He also finished seventh on the team in tackles with 38. Stoops does not want Patrick Towles to utilize the quarterback sneak as much as he did during the Cats’ matchup with Ohio due to the Gators strong 4 | Timeout | 9.12.14

defense, which leaves Hargreaves itching to square up against the Cats’ speedy ground raid. “I don't think we really want to be in the business of going into The Swamp and running him 22 times,” Stoops said. “I’m not sure that will be a good idea. Yeah, we'll talk to him a little bit about some of the reads and some of the design. He can run and he will run. But I don't think any of us are looking for that many every week.” On the offensive side of the ball, standout junior quarterback Jeff Driskel shined in the Gators’ opener against Eastern Michigan. Driskel was 31-for -45 and threw for 248 yards with one touchdown. “He's a good football player and he's got some good weapons with a good system,” Stoops said. “He can run it and he can throw it. They exploded in that first game. They have some play makers.” Sophomore running back Kelvin Taylor also put on a show in Florida’s 65-0 demolition of the Eagles. Taylor rushed for 68 yards on eight carries for the Gators. “I think they're much different offensively this year,” Stoops said. “They got some weapons and they got some real speed outside, a great scheme. You know, I think they're much improved offensively.” The Gators will be a big challenge for the Cats but Stoops is excited to get into conference play. “It's a great place, a great atmosphere,” Stoops said. “Very passionate fan base. It will be a real challenge. It's certainly not easy. It will be really good for us to see where we're at. I know the coaches are excited. The players are anxious for this great challenge. We'll see where we're at.”

Kentucky week to bring local culture to students NEWS

MELISSA PAYNE news@kykernel.com

The Student Activities Board has sponsored Kentucky Week for many years in hopes of bringing awareness to UK students about Kentucky culture. According to their website SAB hopes to bring art, music, sports and more to campus throughout the week with events like the Farmer’s MarCat and Craft Fair, PRHBTN

Street Art Exhibit, Big Blue Commonwealth and a Houndmouth concert. The Farmer’s MarCat and Craft Fair kicks off the week Monday, starting at 10 a.m. on the Student Center patio. Both events offer homemade crafts to support local businesses and allows students to learn more about sustainability, according to the SAB website. “The MarCat is a place to walk through and get introduced to Kentucky,” said James Collard,

a biology junior who is the SAB director of engaging issues and coordinator of the Farmer’s MarCat. Collard said that a popular vendor at the MarCat year after year is Berries on Bryan Station. “I am going to be selling some of my organic vegetables, watermelon, tomatoes, spinach, varieties of squash, triple berry jam and pickled okra,” said Erik Walles, a farm owner at Berries on Bryan Station.

“A smaller-scale [farmer’s market] for students is a good opportunity to learn about where your food comes from,” said Olivia Senter, an integrated strategic communications sophomore and SAB director of public relations. Senter explains that students will have an opportunity to talk to local vendors and learn about the process of making their products, from seed to their kitchen table.
