UK exceeding expectations SPORTS

JOSHUA HUFF jhuff@kykernel.com

Let’s be real about this Saturday’s UK football game against Vanderbilt. If UK wants to keep any semblance of hope about reaching a bowl game this season, they must beat the Commodores. UK enters the game sitting pretty at 2-1 and a win would put them halfway to becoming bowl eligible. The Cats have few remaining games on the docket that are winnable; Louisiana-Monroe and Tennessee come to mind. Vanderbilt slumps into Commonwealth Stadium, slightly improved, but by no means stiff competition for a UK team that took Florida to the ropes down in The Swamp. The Cats cannot let this game slip out of their grasp as too few chances remain for guaranteed wins. Winning three out of four allows UK eight opportunities to win three games, and in the midst of a rebuilding season, the best moral victories come when expectations are exceeded. So how can UK win? UK quarterback Patrick Towles regressed down in Florida. He threw three interceptions against a Gator team that has one of the worst secondaries in the country. Towles needs to find his UT-Martin/Ohio game form and limit the sacks and turnovers. With a young and inexperienced secondary at Vanderbilt, Towles may be able to revert to his game manager

ways against the Commodores. Vanderbilt ranks near the bottom in the Southeastern Conference in total defense. The Commodores have allowed the third most passing yards and the third most rushing yards in the SEC, while UK through three games ranks fourth in the league with 320 passing yards per game. The Edge — Kentucky Running Aground UK’s rushing game needs to steer clear of the behemoths up front and plot a course that involves open water. In Laymen’s terms, the Cats need to run the ball better as UK’s tenth place ranking in the SEC doesn’t provide any cushion during games. The Cats have rushed for just 547 yards in three contests and its leading rusher isn’t even a running back. It’s Towles, who’s rushed for 166 yards. The next closest is Braylon Heard, who has 158 rushing yards. The good thing is that South Carolina was able to rush for 212 yards against Vanderbilt last weekend. So look for UK’s running game to get kick started once again after a few rough outings. The Edge — Kentucky UK’s defense holds the anchor It’s a bit odd sitting here just prior to week five and writing about how impressive UK’s defense has been. The Cats defense has held opponents to one of the conferences best average yards per play with a 4.9-yard average. The Commodores are ranked dead last in the SEC in

terms of offense. It has thrown for just 657 yards in the season along with just 477 rushing yards. And Vanderbilt enters the game with question marks at quarterback. Starter Patton Robinette is still questionable so the start may go to Wade Freebeck who nearly rallied the Commodores past the Gamecocks. Regardless of who plays, the quarterback position in the SEC needs to be at 100 percent, playing at 85 percent

isn’t going to be good enough. The Edge — Kentucky Prediction UK has done a good job this season at minimizing mistakes; look for that to continue against the Commodores. A win for UK will snap a SEC leading 17-game losing streak and will place them at the halfway mark towards bowl eligibility. UK 35, Vanderbilt 14

With Vanderbilt leading the Gamecocks 140, Robinette was knocked down after a hard hit that subsequently led to a concussion. He left the game after just five pass attempts but was sharp with his delivery prior to his injury. So, the question sitting on the shoulders of Mason is who will start under center come Saturday in Commonwealth Stadium. “It will be interesting to see who goes for them,” UK head coach Mark Stoops said. “I think you could see some real talent in the freshman (Wade Freebeck). True freshman Freebeck, has played in two games this season and is 12 for 22 for 171 yards and one touchdown. This is in comparison to Robinette who is 23 for 32 for 240 yards. Even with the starting quarterback in debate, Stoops believes that Vanderbilt’s offense will be a challenge for the Cats.

“They do a lot of creative things with big sets,” Stoops said. “That was helpful for them against South Carolina. You could see they're starting to build more and more into their package. They create some big problems from the run and pass with big sets. That’s really new now because not too many people are doing it.” Stoops has noticed excitement in his team and believes they are playing with more confidence. But the biggest accomplishment for the new era of Kentucky football has yet to come — a victory over an SEC team. “We'd sure like to get one, that's for sure,” Stoops said. “We work extremely hard each week to go out and put ourselves in a position to win. As I said after the last game, I was proud of the effort. I felt like if we keep on giving ourselves chances like that to win, then we'll get some wins.”

After a relaxing bye week, the UK football team is recharged and ready to take on Vanderbilt Saturday in its first Southeastern Conference home game of the season. The Commodores, under the direction of first year head coach Derek Mason, have been on a roller coaster ride so far this season. VU lost its first two match-ups to Temple and Ole Miss, only scoring a combined 10 points in both contests. The Commodores pulled out their first win of the season with a 34-31 victory over Massachusetts on September 13th. Vanderbilt enters the matchup coming off a close game with No. 13 South Carolina where it fell 48-34 and temporarily lost its starting quarterback, Patton Robinette.

win over UK. Sunday’s matchup will be the 49th time the Gamecocks and Cats have played each other. UK leads the all-time series 30-18 and has won nine out of the last ten meetings. South Carolina is 12-10 at home against UK and its last victory over the Cats was on October 22, 2010 at South Carolina. The last time the Gamecocks faced UK was on November 8, 2013 and South Carolina dropped the game 3-0 as the Cats out hit the Gamecocks .269 to .069. South Carolina’s freshman outside hitter Taylor McNeil leads the team with an average of 3.64 kills per set, which ranks fourth in the SEC and first among league freshmen. She is also second on the team in digs per set (2.52) and has recorded two double-doubles, including a career-high 22 kills and 23 digs as well as five blocks vs. Furman. She is the only player in the SEC to currently have a double - double with more than 20 kills and 20 digs. The two teams pair up at 1:30 p.m. on September 28th in the Carolina Volleyball Center.

UK looks to rebound - Kernel staff picks for this Saturday’s game

PHOTO BY JAMES HOLT | STAFF

Callum Irving takes a corner kick in Lexington, Ky. on Sept. 9, 2012.

Chelsea Gooden sports@kykernel.com After Tuesday’s tough loss against instate rival Louisville marked the first loss for UK men’s soccer at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Complex, the Cats will look rebound with a victory Saturday against Florida Atlantic. FAU (0-5-1) enters the matchup coming off an 87th minute loss to Georgia Southern

5-4 in the Marriott Springhill Suites Invitational. The Owls capped off the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Mercer. The last time UK (4-3-1) faced the Owls, in 2013, the Cats came away with a 6-1 victory. UK leads the all-time series 20 with the inaugural match coming in the 2006-07 season, which the Cats won 3-0. This Saturday’s matchup marks the first conference game for both teams. The loss to Louisville on Tuesday snapped a four-game winning streak for the Cats who played in front of a record crowd of over 3,000 in the Bell Complex. Despite battling back, the Cardinals struck the final blow in a 2-1 win. The Cats’ are led by Disney Soccer/ National Soccer Coaches Association of America National Player of the Week, Callum Irving. Prior to the Louisville match, Irving had a 414-minute scoreless streak. Irving will be facing an Owls team that has only scored seven goals during the season while Irving has allowed only four goals on 76 shots. And the Owls have allowed 17 goals in the season off of 101 shot attempts. So the Cats will have ample opportunities to press the defense of FAU. UK and FAU will hit the pitch at 8 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Boca Raton, Fla. 9.26.14 | Timeout | 5
