Top 10 matchup features similar foes SPORTS

Cats prepare to face No. 6 Texas KYLE ARENSDORF karensdorfl@kykernel.com

UK Basketball will face its second top-10 opponent, and perhaps its most similar opponent so far this season on Friday, when No. 6 Texas heads to Rupp Arena. Not only are the heights of the two teams nearly mirror images of each other, their two head coaches have been friends for years and took to the media this week to sing each other’s praises before their “big” matchup. UK head coach John Calipari, who has taken flak in the past about being less of a great coach and more of a great recruiter, has deployed a two-platoon system this year that has caught the attention of Texas head coach Rick Barnes. “I’m really just impressed with the way, more than anything, he's got those guys to buy into what he sees,” Barnes said in a conference call with reporters. “He’s always had a great vision for the way he sees his teams (should) play.” At his press conference Thursday, Calipari took time to share his mutual admiration. “He’s always been somebody that I can call when I need to bounce ideas,” he said. “(He’s a) terrific basketball coach. Battler.

belief in his leadership and his confidence, his swagger.” Although Texas has been without its floor leader for four games, they’ve come out on the other side unscathed and have a win against No. 24 UConn to show for it. If the Longhorns need any ex-

You watch how hard his teams play, (they) always do.” Barnes possesses an early season 7-0 record and brings a No. 6 Longhorn team to Lexington that can rival the size of the Cats. In fact, despite the absence of a 7-footer on its roster, Texas has as many players 6foot-9 and over (six) as the consensus “biggest team in the nation” does. “They’re a really big team, so I think it’ll be a challenge for us,” sophomore guard Aaron Harrison said. “But also, I think we’re kind of used to it because we can play each other in practice.” One other thing Harrison and the other UK guards have gotten used to this season is playing against smaller guards, and Texas will be no different. The Longhorns give up at least three inches to each of UK’s two starting guards, and have been down a guard since they lost sophomore standout Isaiah Taylor to a knee injury. “It’s huge. I could sit here and say it's not. It's huge,” Barnes said of the absence of Taylor, who was injured in a Nov. 20 win against Iowa. “(With) his speed, he alleviates a lot of pressure for us, obviously. He's a guy that (has) confidence and the guys have a lot of

tra motivation for their matchup with the No. 1 Cats, they have the opportunity to be the second team to knock off a top-5 opponent this week. “It’s going to be a good game (because) they’re a great team,” PHOTO BY JOEL REPOLEY | STAFF Harrison said. “I’m just excited to Aaron Harrison drives the ball during the UK men's basketball game play in the game.”

was Clarion, I think that was the school. He was a counselor at the camp. I had graduated from college,” Barnes said. “That's when I first met John. From that time we've been friends. We've had mutual friends. I've got so much respect for him.” In the years that followed, both coaches accepted head coaching jobs at programs that were not historically relevant early in their careers. Calipari coached at UMass and Memphis; Barnes led programs at Providence and Clemson. And despite the programs’ past struggles, each coach led their schools to successes that those programs have not seen before or since. “Like anybody being a young head coach like he was and I was, you go into leagues that he's had to go into and leagues that I've had to go into, and sometimes you

want to fight for everything you can,” Barnes said. “And John is a fighter.“ While Calipari fought for relevance at the turn of the century in Memphis, Barnes was leading Texas, a program that, thoughsecond to football in the state, has the resources to compete nationally every year. Barnes, for the last 15 years, has continued to grow and push an underdog program stuck in the shadow of its football program. Calipari shed his role as coach of Memphis for the bright lights and rabid fans at UK, one of the elite programs of college basketball. “I just think he's been really, really underrated as a coach,” Barnes said. “I don't think people realize it's not as easy as you think that when you do have talent, and it's

I’m really just impressed with the way ... he’s got those guys to buy into what he sees.” RICK BARNES

Relationship runs deeper than basketball

The way Texas head coach Rick Barnes spoke about UK coach John Calipari on Wednesday could lead one to believe that Calipari was Barnes' best man at his wedding. NICK GRAY In reality, Calipari and Kernel Columnist Barnes will be opponents Friday at Rupp Arena in one of the premier nonconference matchups of the college basketball season. However, the respect between the two coaches dates back to 1978, when Barnes said he and Calipari met as young coaches at a high school camp. For the next 30 years, their careers followed a similar path. “He had just transferred back from UNC Wilmington to Clarion – I think it

certainly not as easy as you think when you've got a target on your back every night and you've got bullets coming at you.” Barnes made it clear that friendship aside, no love will be lost when the two teams square off on Friday at Rupp, but when the horn sounds for the final time, handshakes will be exchanged by the two close friends. “To be as honest as I can be with you,” Barnes continued, “I think if I had a problem, a personal problem of any nature, if I needed some help with helping someone else or anything, I know if I called John Calipari he would say to me, 'What do you need? Don't say another word. You just tell me what you need.'”

Contest urges student creativity NEWS

Pitches entered in online-only competition could earn winner $1,000 SOPHIA MAHMOOD news@kykernel.com

UK students now have the opportunity to pitch their original ideas in the University’s first-ever student pitch competition for prize money. UK150 is an entrepreneurship competition where students can win $1,000 by submitting product pitches online. Competitors must create a 150-second pitch, upload it to YouTube and share it on the competition website, uk150.com, by Dec. 12. Charlie Hales, a communications senior, is one of the hopefuls entering the competition. Hales, a member of the UK hockey team, is in the process of designing a hock-

ey app that he believes will revolutionize the way hockey players connect. Hales is currently enrolled in COM 381, a leadership and entrepreneurship class taught by Jamie and Patrick Leddin, he said. “Jamie is one of the board members of iNET and that’s how I found out about the competition,” Hales said. If he wins, Hales hopes to spend the prize money on a trip to Europe over the summer. “One goal of UK150 is to tap into the incredible creativity and innovation of all UK students for at least 150 ideas,” College of Communication and Information dean Dan O’Hair told UKNow in their pre-

view of the event. “We’re also hoping to start some buzz about the fourth annual UK Venture Challenge on March 7.” O’Hair founded iNET, the Innovation Network for Entrepreneurial Thinking,

We all have ideas for how to make our campus, our job, this world a better place.” BRIAN RANEY, founder of Awesome Inc. which is providing the prize money along with Awesome Inc., a Kentucky tech startup company.

To be eligible for the $1,000 grand prize, competitors’ pitches should be no more than 150 seconds long. Pitches may only be given by students enrolled at UK and group pitches are allowed. “We all have ideas for how to make our campus, our job, this world a better place,” Awesome Inc. founder Brian Raney wrote in an email to the Kentucky Kernel. “Participating in UK150 is ridiculously easy and is an opportunity for students’ ideas to be heard.” A panel comprised of local entrepreneurs and current student entrepreneurs will judge the entries. “This contest is an awesome opportunity for students and it’s so easy to do,” Hales said. “I am so excited at the possibility of winning a thousand dollars (for) an idea I had years ago.”

UF hires McElwain EDGAR THOMPSON Orlando Sentinel

Jim McElwain is the Gators' new head football coach, but he did not come cheaply. It took three days to reach a deal that involved significant investments by both UF and McElwain. To address McElwain's $7.5 million buyout clause with Colorado State University, the University of Athletic Association at UF announced it will pay CSU 3 million over a period of six years and McElwain will personally pay the school $2 million over a period time. The Gators also agreed to play Colorado State in the Swamp some time between 2017 and 2020, with UF paying the Rams $2 million for the game. UF also announced the terms of McElwain's compensation package as an average of $3.5 million annually over six years. “Coach McElwain was someone we targeted from the beginning of the search,'' UF

athletic director Jeremy Foley said in a release posted on the school's website. “The more we worked through the process and did our due diligence, coupled with our meeting and conversations with him and those around him, it was obvious he is the right person to lead the Florida Gator football program.” McElwain met with Colorado State players Thursday. A source told the Sentinel McElwain will not coach the Rams' bowl game, giving him more time to recruit for the Gators. McElwain became the focus of Foley's search for a head coach to replace Will Muschamp during the past three days. McElwain, a native of Montana, previously was the offensive coordinator at Alabama, where he helped the Crimson Tide win national titles in 2009 and 2011. “He has an engaging personality and is someone who can connect with a variety of audiences and he operates with a high level of integrity,” Foley said in a statement.

UK volleyball to host first and second rounds of NCAA tourney SPORTS

JOSH HUFF AND MADISON TINDER sports@kykernel.com

The First Round of the NCAA Tournament kicks off this Friday in Memorial Coliseum when UK volleyball makes its tenth consecutive postseason run in hopes of hurdling UK’s current obstacle: the Elite Eight. Standing in UK’s way on Friday will be the Horizon League regular season and tournament champion, Oakland University. No. 13 UK will host the First and Second Rounds of the tournament for the third consecutive season. “Being in your home floor, your own beds and eating at familiar places is something that I think is an advantage,” UK head coach Craig Skinner said about hosting the tournament. “So we’ll be rested and ready to go.” Facing the Cats will be an Oakland team making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Oakland beat out Youngstown State and Milwaukee to claim the Horizon League Championship behind tournament MVP middle hitter Sammy Condon. The bright lights and pro-UK crowd should not be a deterrent for a Golden Griz-

zlies team that is 8-2 on the road and currently on a 10-game winning streak. “Typically a team like Oakland has a couple of players that dominate,” Skinner said. “Oakland is a team that has four or five players that really make a difference in the match. “ Oakland though, has a tough mountain to climb this weekend with a four-team field that includes No. 18 Ohio State and Lipscomb. The match between the Buckeyes and the Bisons will precede the UK and Oakland game with the winners of each facing off on Saturday. “We have to have a great game plan so we know what they’ll do,” Skinner said about the match against Oakland. “Against us and how to defend their players, because they are uniquely balanced in that regard. So we need to play well and if we are lucky enough to advance in that match, we will play two teams that have contrasting styles in terms of matchups.” The Golden Grizzlie’s path to the tournament began with a regular season and tournament championship, which was the first conference title Oakland has achieved at the Division I level. The Golden Grizzles compiled a 22-9 record during the season behind a stellar defense.

The Cats enter the tournament on a threegame winning streak and one of 10 teams to make 10 consecutive tournaments. Skinner is UK’s all-time winningest head coach with 228 wins and has guided the Cats to 20 or more wins in the past four seasons and seven of the last eight. “We get to host again,” Skinner said. “A chance to be at home with the highest seed we have ever had and it is a tribute to our players. We’ve had a great regular season, several all-conference award winners and to me, and especially our young players, it’s the most exciting time to be participating in our sport.” UK has five Cats who have earned AllSEC honors this season. Jackie Napper, Lauren O’Connor, Morgan Bergren, Anni Thomasson and Kaz Brown earned All-SEC accolades, with Napper winning Libero of the Year award. The biggest advantage for UK, though, will be playing in an arena that it has lost just three games in. “I think it’s a great advantage to play at home,” Skinner said. “We do have our home fans. Our attendance has been really good the last few matches and (we’ve) had (a) great rePHOTO BY HUNTER MITCHELL | STAFF sponse in terms of watching this team and the UK’s Anni Thomasson (4) digs the ball in the second half excitement for this team.” against Georgia on Friday, Nov. 7 in Lexington, Ky.

Three-star recruit chooses UK football NEWS

Defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton of Pickerington, OH (Pickerington Central) committed to UK on Wednesday night. The 6-foot-4 and 285-pound defensive tackle committed to the Cats following his official visit to UK on Oct. 25. Recruited by UK Ohio recruiter Vince Marrow, Hamilton joins the 2015 class after

backing out of his commitment to Pittsburgh in June. The three-star recruit had offers from Pittsburgh and Toledo and was drawing interest from Ball State and Buffalo. Though he played offensive guard as a junior, Hamilton went through camps as a defensive tackle after having played the position

as a senior. The signing propels UK back into the Top 25 recruiting rankings at No. 25 according to 247Sports. Hamilton is Marrow’s eighth recruit signed for the 2015 class, with three four-star and five three-star recruits already on the board.

Hamilton finished his senior season at Pickerington Central with 30.5 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. He will look to bolster a defensive line that will lose senior leaders Bud Dupree and Za’Darius Smith. Staff Report

‘Presentation U!’ offers prizes NEWS

TAYLOR GADBERRY news@kykernel.com

Monday marks the beginning of the second week of free prizes and final projects during “12 Days of Presentation U!” in Champions Court I. Students who come to the first floor of the residence hall for free tutoring will get a chance to spin a wheel to win prizes, Diana Hatchett, a Presentation U! staff member, wrote in an email to the Kentucky Kernel. “The prizes we have include gift cards to Starbucks, vouchers for free food and drink(s) at Common Grounds, UK t-shirts,

holiday candy and a variety of little items promoting Presentation U!,” Hatchett wrote in the email. Presentation U! faculty director Deanna Sellnow wrote in an email to the Kentucky Kernel that the event was intended to encourage students to visit their North campus location in Champions Court. The original location is still in place in the W. T. Young Library’s Hub, although the prize wheel is only located on North campus. “The Champions I location just opened in October and we want to spread the word that we are here to help students with their final class projects related to multimodal communication,” Sellnow wrote in the email.

The prizes are available from 3 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 12. Students can also receive free tutoring and peer coaching from the campus resource to help refine their last-minute projects, Hatchett wrote. The location accepts appointments and walk-ins for study assistance. Presentation U! helps students succeed by “enhancing the very same skills that will set them apart as leaders in their professions when they graduate from UK,” Sellnow wrote in the email. The tutoring resource can help with research papers and writing assignments, public speeches and group presentations or digital projects like Powerpoint and Prezi.

Grand juries in recent days have refused to charge officers in Ferguson and New York, setting off waves of protests across the country. The Obama administration has called for more training and the use of body cameras by police to provide a clear and impartial record of all confrontations. A video of the Garner confrontation with New York Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo went viral after the July 17 incident. A New York court on Thursday released a limited amount of information about the secret grand jury investigation, including the number of witnesses who testified and the number of exhibits submitted into evidence. The four-page document largely contains Richmond County District Attorney Daniel Donovan Jr.'s appeal for the release of the information and is the only document that will be publicly available in connection with the case, according to David Bookstaver, a spokesman for the city's office of court administration. The disclosure did not include transcripts of testimony, Garner's autopsy report or any other specific evidence.

Mayor talks Garner protests

MICHAEL MUSKAL, TINA SUSMAN AND JAMES QUEALLY Los Angeles Times (TNS) NEW YORK — New York Mayor Bill de Blasio praised the police response to demonstrators protesting a Staten Island grand jury decision not to indict a white police officer in the death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man, and called for changes in procedure and training. Speaking after a tour of the new Police Academy in College Point, Queens, de Blasio, accompanied by Police Commissioner William Bratton, watched as instructors discussed how police were allowed to take down suspects, a key issue in the Garner case where critics said police used an improper chokehold that led to the African-American man's death. “Fundamental questions are being asked and rightfully so,” de Blasio said, adding, “This tragedy is raising a lot of tough questions.” “People need to know that black lives and brown lives matter as much as white lives,” said the mayor, who has spoken eloquently on race relations and how fear of police has touched his family. TONY PUGH McClatchy Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — This season's flu vaccine may not be as effective against new and possibly more virulent strains of the virus that could become the nation's dominant form of influenza in the young flu season. The emergence of a mutated flu virus has caused the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a national health advisory urging caregivers to prescribe antiviral medications to suspected flu patients. Although flu activity has been relatively mild in the U.S. thus far, Influenza A viruses, known as H3N2, have been seen in most states. “We know that in seasons when H3 viruses predominate ... The rate of hospitalization and death can be twice as high or more,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden in a conference call with reporters. So far this season, five children have died from the flu, and outbreaks have occurred in schools and nursing homes, Frieden said. Testing has found that 52 percent of more than 1,100 H3N2 virus samples were found to be antigenetically different from the H3N2 virus used in this year's flu vaccine, Frieden

said. “They're different enough that we're concerned that protection from vaccination ... may be lower than we usually see,” Frieden said. “These changes can signal that the immune response provided by vaccination won't protect as well for these viruses.” Despite the prospect of lower protection rates, Frieden said vaccination is still the best protection against the flu “and may have some effectiveness against the drifted strain.” To fight complications from the flu, Frieden said antiviral medications, which shorten the duration and severity of flu symptoms, are an “important second line of defense,” particularly for people who are at high risk of serious flu complications. This includes children under age 2, adults 65 and older, people with chronic pulmonary and cardiovascular problems and those with neurologic and immunosuppressant disorders. Fewer than 1 in 6 flu patients actually get the drugs, Frieden said. Many doctors don't prescribe antivirals because they mistakenly believe that patients must first be tested for the virus. Others just aren't familiar with using antivirals for flu treatment because they're most effective in treating bacterial infections, Frieden said.
