Hitting slopes, not roads Classes cancelled as more than 9 inches of snow blanket campus

Cold weather continues

Students used everything from box lids to mattresses to rocket down the slopes of “the bowl” in front of William T. Young Library Monday. Classes were cancelled, and only Plan B employees had to come to campus.

lids, the cardboard signs around campus and had attempted to wrap garbage bags around their legs to slide down the bowl, Bickley said. Many approached the group and asked for a turn on the mattress. The answer was always yes. Near the Rose Street entrance to the library, Cole Green and Austin Mills set up a table and thermos to hawk lemonade to the sledders for a quarter a cup. “It was just a random idea last night,” Mills, a finance freshman, said. “It’s going very well, we’ve made a dollar-fifty so far. Green, an undeclared engineering freshman, said the two set up around noon and would be pulling shifts with about eight other people until about 6 p.m. The afternoon’s proceeds were covered in a layer of snow on the plastic tabletop. Several friends were doing homework together when the snow day announcement came through at about 9 p.m. on Sunday, Green said. “We texted some other people (as well),” Mills added. “They said they’ll come, they think it’s funny.”

“The bowl” in front of the William T. Young Library was covered with students bundled up and carrying box lids, laundry baskets and sleds Monday afternoon. After classes were cancelled Sunday evening, students arrived en masse to sled around the library. The most popular sled at about 1:30 p.m. was a large green mattress lifted from a dorm bed and sent hurtling down the bowl over and over. Michael Hurak, an RA in Kirwan III, said he supplied the mattress. The sustainable agriculture junior said he was willing to lend the makeshift sled to just about anyone who asked. no harm, “There’s everyone’s having a good time,” he said. Hurak was joined by civil engineering senior Joseph Humbert and business marketing and communications senior Clara Bickley, who said she texted everyone late Sunday night to go “mattress sledding.” Other students had tried sledding with garbage can

The two didn’t anticipate selling out of the lemonade before six, Mills said, though the question was raised of whether the thermos would freeze solid. “If we sell out of lemonade, I think we’ll call it a day,” Mills said. “I think we’ll have won.” UK Physical Plant workers began shoveling and salting early Monday

At about 1:30 p.m., the National Weather Service posted that snow would continue to fall through Monday evening, mainly in Central Kentucky. The snowfall would range from four to nine inches over Southern Indiana, to 12 to 16 inches over portions of East Central Kentucky. A Winter Storm Warning remained in effect until 1 a.m. on Tuesday, with the heaviest snowfall expected Monday afternoon. According to an email from Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts, the Lexington Police Department recommended Monday morning that all non-essential persons stay off the roads. At 4:30 p.m., Lexington Police stated that they had responded to 34 non-injury collisions, five injury collisions and 293 requests for assistance from motorists. The National Weather Service advised that many Kentucky roads would be treacherous, and some nearly impossible to navigate. It recommended that drivers travel with an emergency kit of food, water, blankets and flashlights. UK spokesman Jay Blanton said that students who experience emergencies on campus tomorrow should contact the UK Police Department.

The UK Basketball team (25-0) escaped the Lexington snow storm by arriving early in Knoxville, Tenn., in preparation to face the Volunteers on Tuesday. The decision to leave a day early for the road game was made after Deputy Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy and Associate Athletics Director of Basketball Operations Chris Woolard spoke with head coach John Calipari about what the best options for travel was for the team. Calipari was still in New York at the time, attending the 2015 NBA All-Star Game, and flew in to Knoxville from there. While the snow has caused major disruptions for many Lexington citizens, it has had little-to-no effect on

the Cats’ mentality in facing a Tennessee team that is looking to become the first team to defeat UK this season, said associate head coach Kenny Payne. “No big deal,” Payne said of the players’ thoughts on leaving early. “We’ll get prepared for a very good team that’s going to play out of their minds. That’s what we face every game.” But Payne rethought the circumstances when asked about how the weather would affect the travel plans for UK fans heading to Tennessee. “We need our fans,” Payne said with a smile. “That’s a big part of us on the road.” On Saturday, UK cruised by South Carolina 77-43 a day after Calipari spoke about the team needing to focus on “winning See BASKETBALL on page 2

‘50 Shades of Grey’ glorifies domestic abuse Hitting women, controlling relationships focus of film DAVID BURNETT Guest Columnist

During this year’s Super Bowl, a group called “No More” paid $4.5 million to remind us that it’s not okay to hit women. Universal Studios, on the other hand, just spent $40 million for their wildly anticipated “50 Shades of Grey,” which says it actually is okay to hit women – so long as there’s a chance they secretly enjoy it. I’ve listened to a lot of classmates and coworkers praise the book and plan to see the film, and I’ll be honest. I don’t get it. I know women who have

been abused. I’m awed by their determination to move on and not be defined by such violence. Like the rest of the world, I’ve been properly indignant that a man would ever assault a woman. I’ve even taught women how to hit and shoot, and encouraged them not to put up with mistreatment. So what’d I miss? Why does abuse in a suit become sexy? According to rapist taxonomy, “power-assertive” rapists commit about 44 percent of rapes. Their profiles are generally narcissistic, macho and egotistical, self-centered, athletic, and vain. They commit rape to establish virility and dominance, to possess and control their victims. They incorporate

bondage, punishment and humiliation into their acts, and often believe their victims enjoy their rape. Christian Grey is the poster boy for the power assertive rapist. Jealous and

On another occasion, she shouts no and he silences her by threatening to bind and gag her. It’s worth noting – this is the legal definition of sexual assault. Yet women pant for more. The books have sold over 100 million copies, and the films, though critically

panned, are set for recordbreaking sales. Never before has domestic violence been met with such enthusiastic approval from women. It’s scary. Even the actors don’t understand the book’s success.

In an interview with Elle Magazine, actor Jamie Dornan conceded that he’s puzzled by the series’ popularity, and admitted that after his first encounter with BDSM, he had to take a long shower before seeing his wife and daughter. Costar Dakota Johnson confessed to Time Magazine that the sex scenes were uncomfortable, painful and emotionally taxing, and gave her whiplash from the repetitively violent depictions. As a man I was brought up to be a gentleman and respect women. What are guys left to believe when women choose abusive fantasy over the dignity and respect they claim to prefer? It seems to me that decades of female empowerment are being undone by a sex-starved Twilight fan fictionist. And female audiences are eating it up.

The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey says that for 50 percent of women in America, sexual violence is reality, not fantasy. Recent studies show those numbers have been decreasing. But now rapists and domestic abusers have come into their own. Hollywood is tacitly confirming what they’ve always thought: No matter how much she resists, secretly, she likes it. Is this really the lesson we want to teach? Are we doing women any favors by normalizing the toxic brutality of Christian Grey’s world? Washington Monument shorter than thought By Michael Muskal Los Angeles Times (MCT)

Patriots stood tall for America on Monday in celebration of George Washington's birthday. But the monument that bears his name measured about 10 inches smaller than had been thought. The latest measurements of the Washington Monument were announced on Monday by U.S. officials, just in time for the holiday commemorating the birth of Washington, the father of his country. The monument itself has been re-measured and found to be shorter, mainly because the original measuring points have changed and, in part, because of the greater accuracy of modern devices. “The building has absolutely not shrunk,” Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service, told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s a new measurement with new techniques and a new starting point.” The Washington Monument juts into the skies of Washington, D.C., and was originally measured by Lt. Col. Thomas Casey in 1884. It was found then to be 555 feet, 5 inches. The latest measurement, however, found the marble obelisk to be 554 feet, 7 and 11/32 inches as measured from the main entrance to the top. Modern international standards from the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the keepers of the official guidelines for measuring buildings, in 2014 called for a different base point than what once was used. The 19th century measurement was commemorated by brass markers still in the ground. Those four markers are about 9 inches lower than the main entrance, accounting for almost all of the change, said Ben Sherman, a spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Geodetic Survey, which performed the new measurement. “There has been some better measurement that comes from new technology, but most of the change is from your start,” Sherman said. The latest measurement was done while the monument was still recovering from a 2011 earthquake. Earlier survey results showed the monument did not sink any further into the ground as a result of the 5.8magnitude quake.

Copenhagen gunman probably inspired by Paris attacks, police say By Julia Waeschenbach and Lennart Simonsson news@kykernel.com

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — The gunman who killed two people in attacks at an event promoting free speech and on a Copenhagen synagogue was probably “inspired” by last month’s massacre at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris, Danish police said Sunday. The identity of the 22year-old gunman has been established but police said they would not reveal his name for the time being. Officers shot him dead outside his apartment early Sunday. Jens Madsen, head of Danish security service PET, said he believed the shooter

was “inspired by the attacks in Paris,” referring to the Islamist killing spree in which 17 people died, including 12 at the offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, known for its caricatures of the prophet Mohammed. The gunman “has been in our sights,” Madsen said, but added that his agency “has no specific or concrete knowledge” that he had traveled to Iraq and Syria to fight or train alongside militant groups. The man, who was born in Denmark, had a lengthy criminal record, including weapons possession charges and assault. He also had links to criminal gangs, police said. Police were conducted forensic tests on two hand-

guns found at his apartment to see if they matched the shootings. Clothes that matched the description of the shooter were also found. Surveillance video was being used to retrace the suspect’s movements, police said. It was not known if he was helped by others. The first shooting took place in a cafe hosting a freedom of speech event attended by Lars Vilks, a Swedish artist who has received death threats for satirizing the prophet Mohammed in cartoons. Vilks, the presumed target, was unharmed. In remarks to Swedish daily Aftonbladet, he said he feared “there will be more attacks.” Filmmaker Finn Nor-

time,” stretching a 13point lead over opponents to 20. The Cats led 43-18 at halftime and were up by 30-plus points for nearly 10 minutes of play in the second half. A big contributor to UK’s stellar performance was the improvement of forward Willie CauleyStein. The 7-foot junior had been struggling since late December, scoring in double figures only twice in 11 games and admitting that he wasn’t having as much fun playing during that time. But in his last three games, Cauley-Stein played with a resurgence of energy, performing high-flying dunks, recording double-digit points in all three games and picking up 19 total rebounds. Payne said the reemergence of Cauley-Stein’s

dominant form was thanks to a conversation the junior had with a former UK big man. “Sharing a little time with Anthony Davis has helped him,” Payne said. “Anthony basically talked to him about the mental preparation to be great. Willie wants to do what Anthony is doing (in the NBA), so why not hear it from him?” Payne added that the Cats will need CauleyStein to continue his aggressive mentality in games if they want to stay great down the stretch, including against Tennessee. “Willie’s issue isn’t anything physical. It’s all mental,” Payne said. “When Willie Cauley plays instinctively and strong, he’s as good as there is in the country. That’s it.” A win against the Volunteers would give UK the best start it’s ever had in program history.
