Hoops defeats Razorbacks UK Hoops can finally breathe a sigh of relief. After three straight losses, the Cats were in danger of slipping even further down the SEC standings, jeopardizing a potential bye in the conferJOSHUA HUFF ence tournament. While a bye remains a Sports Editor question whether than a definite, the 56-51 win against Arkansas on Thursday helped UK more than just in standings, but also in confidence. Facing a Razorbacks defense that ranks in the top four in the conference, the Cats shook off their past game struggles and defeated Arkansas at its own game: on defense. UK held Arkansas to under 27 percent shooting on the night and 32 percent from the three. The Razorbacks shot 25 threes, making just eight. In a complete reversal, UK won the points in the paint margin, holding a 38-16 advantage over the Razorbacks; an advantage that may have been magnified due to the number of threes Arkansas shot. At this point, UK will take any victory. During the Ole Miss game, the Rebels knew they could drive to the rim on the Cats, a focus that UK solidified on Thursday as the Razorbacks only made 11 shots within the perimeter. After poor post play in previous games, it’s a relief to see that senior forward Azia Bishop had a game-high 12 points and six rebounds. It was, however, the play of Bria Goss that solidified the victory for UK. Her steal late in the game was a key play in the win. After scoring just one point against Ole Miss on Monday, Makayla Epps followed up with another low-scoring affair, shooting 2-for7 for just four points. Her performance, however, may be a direct result of the lingering injuries that she has dealt with throughout the season. Senior Jennifer O’Neill scored 11 points and sophomore Linnae Harper added eight and a not-surprising seven rebounds. As great as the victory was, all will be for naught if UK cannot defeat the titan of the SEC, South Carolina, during Senior Night. If the Cats’ defense can play the way it did against Arkansas, then nothing is out of the realm of possibility.

Forward Willie Cauley-Stein drives into the lane during the game against the Auburn Tigers at Rupp Arena on Saturday in Lexington, Ky. UK defeated Auburn 110-75.

Cauley-Stein one of 15 award finalists UK Basketball forward Willie CauleyStein was named as a finalist for the 2015 Oscar Robertson Trophy by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Thursday. Cauley-Stein, according to UK Athletics, is one of 15 finalists. The award will be presented at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The 7-foot junior has averaged 9.4 points and 6.4 rebounds this season. He has also recorded 12 double-figure scoring games for

UK. Cauley-Stein is the first player in program history with 200-plus career blocks and 100 or more career steals. He’s also just the eighth UK player to record more than 500 rebounds and 100 or more blocks during their career. The other Oscar Robertson Trophy finalists include Wichita State’s Ron Baker, Syracuse’s Rakeem Christmas, Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky, Duke’s Jahlil Okafor and Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer, who played for UK from 2011-2013.

No. 1 UK will take on No. 18 Arkansas at Rupp Arena on Saturday. The Razorbacks are the first ranked team UK has faced since No. 4 Louisville on Dec. 27. The undefeated Cats beat Mississippi State 74-56 on Wednesday, marking the longest winning streak in program history at 28. UK is just two wins away from becoming the 23rd college basketball team to ever have a 30-game winning streak and just the 16th team to go undefeated in the regular season. STAFF REPORT

Hoops snaps 3-game losing streak

UK Hoops snapped a three-game losing streak on Thursday by defeating Arkansas 56-51 at the Bud Walton Arena. The Cats led for most of the game, with Arkansas’ only lead coming from the first basket at 2-0. But the Razorbacks made it interesting for UK, cutting a 10-plus point

deficit down to single digits twice. UK led by as many as 17 in the first half. UK survived a game-high 23 points from Arkansas forward Jessica Jackson. The 6foot-3 sophomore went 8-for-25 on the night, including five made three pointers. She was the only Razorback to score in double fig-

ures. UK senior forward Azia Bishop led the Cats in points with 12 on a 6-for-8 shooting night. Bishop also pulled in six rebounds, but fouled out with 1:41 remaining in the game. SEE HOOPS PAGE 7

Cats to face reigning national champs SPORTS

MADISON TINDER sports@kykernel.com

After a record-breaking performance for No. 25 UK gymnastics against Arkansas on Friday, the Cats will travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the back-toback national champion Gators. The meet is Florida’s annual Link to Pink match, which includes events that are aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer prevention. Both UK and Florida will wear special pink uniforms for the meet. No. 3 Florida (5-2, 4-2 SEC) is back at home after losing to No. 2 LSU on Friday. The Gators’ score of 197.425 is the nation’s fourth-highest road mark this season, but was not enough to top a consistent Tigers team that pulled away during the second rotation. Two standout freshmen, Alex Mc-

Murtry and Kennedy Baker, posted scores greater than 9.95 on the vault and on the floor against LSU. McMurty won her fourth vault title of 2015 while Baker placed second on the floor event. Five different Gators have earned SEC Player of the Week honors this season, including two who have earned the awarf multiple times. UK (4-4, 2-3 SEC) is coming off a huge upset against No. 14 Arkansas as six Cats had their career-best performances against the Razorbacks. Syndey Waltz recorded a career-best 9.9 on the vault while Kayla Hartley and Marissa Beucler tied their career highs as well. Cori Rechenmacher posted her all-time best on the balance beam with a 9.875, and Shannon Mitchell won the event with her own career-high score of 9.9. Friday’s meet will begin at 7 p.m. in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.

UK to host SEC Championships LAMAR SMITH sports@kykernel.com

UK has become a hotspot when it comes to hosting events lately. The university has already hosted the Rod McCravy Memorial, one of the most competitive indoor meets of the year, and the SEC Outdoor Championships last year. Now, UK will play host to the best track athletes in the conference when they meet for the SEC Indoor Championships at the Nutter Field House on Friday. The SEC is considered one of the top conferences in the country, with 16 teams ranked among the Top 25. UK’s women’s team, led by senior sprints runner Dezerea Bryant and senior sprints/jumps athlete Kenyattia Hackworth, has been strong all season and is ranked ninth in the nation. Head coach Edrick Floreal said he expects a few Cats to lead a strong charge in chase of a successful meet. “I think we got two (players) that always stick out like sore thumbs,” Floreal said of Bryant and Hackworth. “But other

than (them), you’ve got (junior thrower) Rebecca Famurewa, who has been on a tear this year, (senior thrower) Brad Szypka and (senior runner) Keffri Neal. who seems like everything he touches turns to gold.” The Cats also have five athletes competing at the meet who have brought the track program a combined seven individual SEC Championships in years past. Bryant is the defending SEC 60m dash champion and currently holds the second-best 60m dash time in the nation this year with a 7.18. Szypka and Neal look to defend their SEC shot put and SEC 800m titles, respectively, at the meet. Szypka ranks ninth in the NCAA this year in shot put. The defending SEC men’s and women’s champion teams are Arkansas and Florida, respectively. Arkansas leads the conference with 20 SEC men’s championships and have won nine of the last ten. The UK women finished fourth at the SEC Championships last year, scoring 72 points at the meet, while the men finished fifth with 69.33 points.

UK softball spent nearly all of February playing challenging games on the road, but rose to the occasion, finishing the month with an 11-3 record. The Cats took down two Top 10 teams in No. 10 Arizona and No. 5 Florida State. UK senior catcher Griffin Joiner was pleased the team had the chance to face tough competition this early in the season and was excited to see many Top 25 matchups at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic last weekend. “Whether it was a game we were playing in or just a game beside us, it was a really neat experience,” Joiner said. The Cats suffered a 7-3 loss to No. 3 Oklahoma, the 2013 Women’s College World Series winner and 2014 WCWS participant, on Saturday. Despite the loss, Joiner said she was glad to be back playing on the dirt. “It’s been exciting for me to be able to catch behind the plate and see every pitcher do well,” Joiner added.

UK’s pitching staff has been fortunate enough to rotate several pitchers, giving each player many innings of work. Junior righthander Kelsey Nunley was named the CoSoutheastern Conference Pitcher of the Week earlier this season and is only the second pitcher in school history to earn the award multiple times. Nunley’s career-earned run average of 1.96 is ranked first in program history and her .211 career-opponent batting average is second all-time. Nunley was also named to the Top 50 watch list for the National Player of the Year award. Sophomore left-hander Meagan Prince says one of her personal goals for this season is to help out the pitching staff, especially Nunley, who she said carried the team last year. “I need to get my job done in the bullpen to help out Kelsey and the team so we can hopefully make it further in the WCWS,” Prince said. “I think we’ve done well so far, but we need to continue working and improving on what we have.” SEE SOFTBALL PAGE 6

Five soccer players sign to UK HUNTER MITCHELL sports@kykernel.com

Five players signed national letters of intent on Thursday to play for UK men’s soccer in the fall of 2015. According to UK Athletics, the recruiting class includes Kentucky natives Harper White and Luke Treadway, along with Cooper Whitfield from Mansfield, Texas, Tanner Hummel from Kennesaw, Ga., and Christian Kirol from Columbia, SC. “These players are willing to come in and take the challenge of representing the Big Blue Nation, and we believe they will do a great job taking on that task,” UK head coach Johan Cedergren said. Treadway, one of the most decorated recruits of the class, is a forward from Edgewood, Ky., where he played at Scott High School. He helped the Eagles win the District and Regional title in 2014. Treadway was the Kentucky Enquirer Player of the Year in 2014 and was selected to the KHSAA Boys Soccer State All-Tournament Team. “If you give him a chance around the

goal, he will most likely finish it,” Cedergren said of Treadway. White, a goalkeeper, joins the Cats after playing at Louisville Collegiate School where he went 14-4-2 in the net. “We are very excited to announce the next class of Wildcats,” Cedergren said to UK Ath-

VP for Institutional Diversity leaving at semester’s end NEWS

Judy Jackson, who served as UK’s first Vice President for Institutional Diversity since 2008, will be leaving the university at the end of the semester, President Eli Capilouto announced in a campus-wide email. According to the email, Jackson made the decision to leave so she could be closer to her family in Boston, Mass. “Students and student success have been the top priorities for Dr. Jackson since her arrival, and her contributions will be greatly missed,” Capilouto wrote in the email.

According to the email, Jackson led initiatives like the Whitney Young Scholars Summer Residential Program, which brought high-achieving minority high schoolers to UK for a two-week residential experience. The Office of Institutional Diversity encompasses task forces for retention and female leadership, as well as LGBT+ and Latino students. Jackson created the LGBTQ Task Force and established an LGBTQ Program Coordinator position, according to the

email. She also supported the Latino Leadership Conference annually and helped found the Black and Latino Male Student Success Initiative. Additionally, Jackson created UK’s Task Force on Women’s Career and Leadership Development. Capilouto wrote in the email that he will communicate the next step for the Office of Institutional Diversity soon.

FROM SOFTBALL PAGE 5 Prince made her career debut as a starter in the season opener, finishing with 11 strikeouts against Florida A&M. Head coach Rachel Lawson said she was satisfied with the start of the season and thinks the team has picked up where they left off last year. “We’re getting a great contribution throughout the entire lineup,” Lawson said.

Lawson mentioned the team is still working to get better so that it may travel to Oklahoma City at the season’s end. “We’re getting ready to go through a tough conference schedule and face the best teams in the country,” Joiner said. “There’s going to be ups and downs, but we’re going to have to fight through that so that by the time we make it to postseason, we are able to reach our ultimate goal.”

The 2015 Frost Classic at Chattanooga, Tenn., UK’s next scheduled stretch of games, was canceled due to snow in the area. No information has been released regarding possible rescheduling of the five games the Cats were slated to play at Jim Frost Stadium. UK will continue its road stretch when it faces Texas A&M at College Station, Texas, on March 6.
