Kentucky Kernel

THE MOST SHINY AND NEW DEATH TRAP AWARD The Most Shiny and New Death Trap Award goes to EdR. UK’s partnership with EdR, a group that manages all of UK’s new residence halls, led to many improvements in residence halls. Students who live on campus now enjoy Tempurpedic mattresses, suite-style dorms and recently-installed elevators that occasionally fall a couple of floors. Even if the bathrooms are significantly better, malfunctioning elevators will continue to plague campus dorms indefinitely it seems.

THE

MOST CRINGEWORTHY AWARD ROUTINE The Most Cringeworthy Routine Award goes to Darren Moscoe, who is known

THE

for dancing at the UK basketball games to Tommy James’ “Mony Mony.” Earlier this year, Moscoe fell down some of Rupp Arena’s stairs during a UK basketball game while lifting a little girl. Everyone was OK, but Moscoe felt horrible about the fall. We’re glad that hasn’t killed his dancing spirit though, as ling as he stays in his seat.

THE

MOST SCHOOL SPIRITAWARD

The Most School Spirit Award goes to crying saxophone girl Taylor Hunt. Hunt cried on national television during the second round of the men’s NCAA Tournament when UK lost to Indiana University. Hunt overflowed with so much school spirit, she inspired Twitter memes and was interviewed on Good Morning America. Unlike Villanova’s crying piccolo girl, Hunt sadly couldn’t play through the school fight song.

GOLDEN FORKS AWARDS

The Most Inclusive Award goes to the NBA for opening up their draft and the world of professional athletics to the underdogs and young hopefuls like our Photo Editor Michael Reaves. Reaves has loved the Cats since he started watching college basketball, and while his passion has always been to capture them in his photos, he was thrilled when he thought he had the chance to stand beside them at the NBA draft. Unfortunately, reality set in for the young hopeful and he no longer has plans to pursue a career in basketball — at least as an athlete. PHOTO BY TAYLOR PENCE I STAFF

THE 2015-2016

MOST INCLUSIVE AWARD

LEAST INCLUSIVEAWARD

The Least Inclusive Award goes to the discussion of racial climate at UK. More than two dozen African-American and black students approached President Capilouto in the fall semester with a list of concerns they had to address the racial climate at UK. One of the lessor items on their list, the mural in Memorial Hall that depicted slaves in Kentucky, became the most publicized—and inconclusive—issue, while constructive measures like implementing classes on improving racial sensitivity and cohesion fell by the wayside. An open records request filed by the Kentucky Kernel revealed that the biggest section of campus organizations, Greek life, has a poor representation of minorities compared to the rest of campus. Hopefully the conversation is just beginning.

MOST CONSISTENT STRAIN ON MARK STOOPS’ HEARTAWARD

IMAGE FROM THE FRANKLIN COUNTY JAIL WEBSITE Jason Hatcher was charged with trafficking marijuana, tampering with evidence and possesion of drug paraphernalia.

take it upon ourselves to strike back with venomous pleasure at those who have wronged the mighty “Fourth Estate.” Editor’s note: OK, OK that’s a lie. We’re a bunch of sarcastic, immature college students who feel like venting their frustrations at the end of the year. It’s unfortunate that some of you must bear the brunt of that. But take comfort in the fact that in about a month the summer Kernel begins, and then comes the fall

with the woman you love to hate, Marjorie Kirk. You are encouraged to make this woman’s life a living hell. Until then, if you’re upset, feel free to send in letters to the editor, as always. But this is the last issue, so they won’t get printed. We’ll read them though. Have a good summer. This blurb was adapted from the April 28, 1989, edition of the Golden Forks Awards.

MOST STUBBORN AND LEAST INSURED AWARD

THE

The Most Stubborn and Least Insured Award goes to Matt Bevin’s supporters. In November, the Lexington Herald-Leader found that the Kentucky counties that had the highest number of citizens on Medicaid voted for Gov. Matt Bevin, who pledged to eliminate the online healthcare exchange Kynect and the Medicaid expansion. When weighing one’s moral values against necessities like Healthcare, it seems pride will push some folks to sacrifice just about anything to keep their conservative values in government—even their family’s health insurance.

THE

The Most Consistent Strain on Mark Stoops’ Heart Award goes to the UK Football program. With back-to-back 5-7 seasons and back-to-back arrests of players Will Thomas Collins and Jason Hatcher, the UK Football program has met all fan expectations. Maybe you’ll go to a bowl game next year, guys, but only if you get tickets.

Years ago — or so the legend goes — an embittered Kernel editor came back to the office upset, hurt and insulted. A prominent campus figure had unfairly harangued the young reporter for an offense that he did not commit. It was at that point, in the heat and sweat of tension, that the young editor vowed revenge. From those feelings of hate, the Golden Forks were born. As a testament to that young reporter we

MOST INTENTIONALLY VAGUEAWARD

THE

The Most Intentionally Vague Award goes to Aramark and its definition of “local” food. Aramark came under criticism by many local food advocates for including Coca-Cola and Home City Ice in its “local” food and Kentucky Proud purchases, to fulfill quotas set by the university to bring business to the local food economy in Kentucky. Way to make Kentucky proud. PHOTO BY KELLY BRIGHTMORE Bi-Water Farm and Greenhouse displays the Kentucky Proud logo on the wall of their general store.

MOST MYSTERIOUS MEANING AWARD THE

The Most Mysterious Meaning Award goes to Assistant Professor Steven Alvarez and his class “Taco Literacy: Public Advocacy and Mexican Food in the U.S. South.” While some people on campus enjoyed the creativity in the name of the course, many students responded with confusion, thinking that UK was now offering a class on how to eat and enjoy tacos. Afraid not, kids, just a critical look at how America has bastardized a culture for its own economic gain. Monday, May 2, 2016 | 7
