INTERVIEWING 101:
Art of self-promotion requires strategy
H
ave you ever heard people bragging about their latest accomplishments and thought, Boy, I hope I never sound like them. How about in a job search? Do you feel uncomfortable talking about yourself and your accomplishments during an interview? Many people have difficulty selling themselves to potential employers for a variety of reasons — they lack self-confidence; they don’t want to sound pushy, conceited, or artificial; or they simply don’t enjoy being in the spotlight. Often, this reluctance stems from cultural norms or role models who taught us, “If I work hard, my performance will speak for itself.” In reality, self-promotion is a necessary skill for your career, not only to land a job but to maintain a good image with your boss and organization. Decisions about employment and promotions are based largely on human perceptions, so first impressions and visibility really do matter — it’s just human nature. Deliberate effort and practice might be necessary to overcome your hesitation and learn the art of authentic self-promotion. Here are some recommended strategies to develop your skills in self-promotion and advance your career: Focus on giving rather than getting: One of the most common hindrances to self-promotion that many people face is the perception that they have to be good at the hard sell, according to Charlie Mitchell, founder and director of Creating Space for You. Mitchell advocates the Go Giver approach from Bob Burg’s, The GoGiver, which focuses on providing value to all you meet: what you can give rather than get. (It’s) refreshing, fun and reassuring for those of us who find we can be successful without having to turn into a pushy salesperson. Build relationships: There is noth-
By Theresa Spencer ing people love to talk about more than their own interests and passions. Likewise, there is nothing that turns people off more than someone who won’t stop talking about his or hers. Appropriate timing is crucial for artful self-promotion. Listen to others to find out what interests them and how you can help them. This builds your relationship, and they will often reciprocate. Remove yourself from the equation: Diane Kohler, director of human resources career development at the University of Kentucky and a privatepractice career coach, asks her clients to think about yourself on your best day at work. What would your boss or co-worker say about you? Taking this third-person approach sometimes helps people recognize their accomplishments and really take credit for them. You can also solicit feedback and recommendations from superiors, colleagues and clients. It gives a boost to your self-confidence and offers concrete ammunition for your job search. Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes: One misconception about interviewers is that they can’t wait to eliminate you from the running. On the contrary, their main goal during interviews is to find the right candidate, and they hope the next person who walks in will be the one. Benny A. Benjamin, a psychologist who has worked in employment services for 32 years, advises his clients that they’re really doing their interviewer a favor if they offer concrete evidence why they are the candidate of choice. Many interviewers may have a hunch that they are speaking with the winning candidate, but they still have to justify their choice to their superiors, Benjamin said. Take stock of your shining moments: When I am coaching clients on preparing for the interview process, I often talk about creating a list of stories and examples of their shining
moments and greatest accomplishments. You want to collect a variety of examples that demonstrate the most desirable skills, such as communication, leadership and teamwork, and the unique qualities that separate you from others. Peggy Klaus, author of Brag! The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn Without Blowing It, recommends keeping a list of your best accomplishments and updating it regularly. In her book, she provides a series of questions to help you get started. Giving examples, especially if you specifically outline the actions you took and the positive results, gives substance and credibility to your assertions so you don’t just sound full of hot air. As you can see, good self-promotion is a balancing act between touting your achievements and maintaining integrity of character and awareness of social cues. It takes practice and sometimes honest feedback from others and/or access to the online interviewing software available through the Stuckert Career Center. Here are a few parting interviewing tips as you prepare for future interviews: • The interview is your opportunity to shine! Be confident and put your best foot forward. • Be prepared to share related experiences, skills, and accomplishments. • Offer detailed and specific examples that demonstrate your fit for the position. • Dress to impress (most industries prefer business suits). • Know the industry standards and company history. • Remember that regardless of how much experience you have, what your GPA is, who you know, or how great your resume appears, if you are not able to interview successfully, you will not get the job. Your resume gets you to the interview, and your interview gets you the job.

The Career Management Tool that Gives You an Edge
S
By Naitore Djigbenou
tudents, graduating seniors, and alumni from the University of Kentucky have exclusive access to the Wildcat CareerLink database available through the home page of the James W. Stuckert Career Center website. This career management tool aids in students’ search for employment, fellowships or internships in addition to providing you with many other career resources to help with the job search process. The database averages 400 jobs and internships throughout the year for users to browse. Users can upload unofficial transcripts, letters of recommendation and writing samples, and can manage all their job interviews or application deadlines on the Wildcat calendar system that syncs with their personal calendars. Wildcat CareerLink serves as a portal, granting users access to multiple career resources. These include InterviewStream, a 24/7 virtual practice interview system that allows students to record a practice interview based on industry specific questions, and Vault, which provides company profiles, salary statistics and salary negotiation advice, as well as information about graduate and professional schools. CareerShift is a WCL resource that allows students to not only execute a job search but to also electronically organize their contacts, interviews, job campaigns, and much more in one place. According to Reba Carroll, a Senior Assistant Director for the Stuckert Career Center, “Wise students become familiar with these free career management tools as Freshmen in order to become knowledgeable about the world of work, how it functions, and what they need to do in order to outshine their competition. The economy is improving but employers are not handing out jobs to the unprepared and the unaware. These resources give a view into real-world career advice from the top companies around the globe.” Accounting and Finance senior Ryan Robinson has had three internships, all of which he found through Wildcat CareerLink. “The Stuckert Career Center is the most important building at the University of Kentucky and, sadly enough, the most underutilized,” Robinson said. “I believe students my age sometimes forget the reason that they came to college, and ultimately that is to get a job.” The James W. Stuckert Career Center also recently changed its logo to include the phrase; EXPLORE…ENGAGE…CONNECT…! Our goal through providing the Wildcat CareerLink online career management resources to students, is to help them do just that! Students can register for a Wildcat CareerLink account at www.uky.edu/careercenter. For additional information, please call (859) 257-2746.

HELLO, MY NAME IS... How to Introduce Yourself at the Employer Showcase By Reba Carroll
xperts say that you have three seconds to make a good first impression when you meet someone new and this is especially true when speaking to an employer or recruiting personnel for the first time. Your introduction to him or her takes place within these first few moments and so it is imperative that it be warm, friendly, informative and relaxed. The “relaxed” part may seem a bit challenging at first, but once you have decided what to say and practiced that out loud a few (or a lot) of times, your confidence will surface and all will go well. You will be more relaxed and confident after you have made your introduction a time or two to a lot of nice people at the Employer Showcase who are looking for employees or interns--who are looking for you! I can offer you a few tips on what to say and how to say it in your initial introduction to an employer. 1. An employer or recruiter’s impression of you begins before you open your mouth. You may be waiting your turn in line behind someone else who is speaking to an employer and if those employers can see you, they will on some level be making a judgment of you. So, be sure that your attire is professional and that your clothes are clean and pressed and shoes polished. Good grooming and good posture will tell the employer that you are someone who cared enough to dress for the occasion and are taking this encounter seriously. 2. Never underestimate the power of a smile. Not only will a smile let the employer know you are friendly but smiling will help you relax! Being relaxed is the key to making a pleasant and successful introduction. 3. A simple script for how to introduce yourself. Hello, my name is ______ and I am a (freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior) here at UK, majoring in_______ . I am very interested in a position or internship at (name of company) and was excited when I saw you were going to be here. Example: “Hello, my name is Mary Jones and I am a senior here at UK majoring in Business Management. I am very interested in an internship or position at Target and was very excited when I saw you were going to be here.” It’s that simple! Now all you need do is practice and it is important that you practice out loud in order to become comfortable hearing
yourself make your introduction. 4. Make good eye contact throughout your conversation. Eye contact will tell the employer that you are listening and engaged in what she is saying as well as what you plan to say. 5. A handshake tells a lot about you. In our culture we shake hands in many situations and a firm handshake is highly valued. “Firm,” however, does not mean bone-crushing. You want to impress the other person not hurt them. But you also don’t want to offer a limp handed, “dead fish” type of handshake. This tells the other person that you aren’t really very happy to meet them. You don’t want to come across as aloof, weak, non-committed, or just plain rude. Be sure to shake hands with your entire hand and not just your fingertips. I recommend practicing with someone who can give you feedback if you’re unsure. Focusing on handshakes may seem unnecessary, but first time human interaction is about your entire body, not just your voice! 6. Do Your Research! Often, the first question an employer or recruiter will ask you after you introduce yourself is, “What do you know about our company?” If you learn from our website or Kernel Newspaper that a particular company you are interested in is attending the Employer Showcase, research them! Go to the company’s website, check them out on LinkedIn™ and/or talk to someone who works there. Find out about where and who they are and what they do. Learn the latest goals, projects, awards, community involvement, and culture of that company as well as the names of their leadership and the vision and mission of those leaders. This knowledge earns you credibility with employers who will be impressed that you know about them. This knowledge alone may get you an interview. 7. Finally, Have Fun! The environment at our UK Employer Showcases is always very fun, festive and energy charged. Employers are there because they want to be. Having a good time will help you make that first impression a good one. It really is possible to relax and enjoy the experience even though you may be concerned about finding a job or internship. So dress up, bring your resumes and plan to have fun! See you at the Showcase!
S
ENHANCE YOUR JOB SEARCH WITH SOCIAL MEDIA By Theresa Spencer
ocial networks have changed our lives, so it’s no surprise they have also changed how companies recruit employees. While LinkedIn has been a popular choice for a long time, many recruiters are starting to pay attention to the other big social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Jobvite, a recruiting software company, conducted a 2011 survey of human resources professionals that found 55 percent of them recruit using Facebook and 47 percent use Twitter. And in this competitive job market, job seekers need to heed this growing trend and take full advantage. Because most job seekers are not using multiple social networks in their job searches, those who do will appear more proactive and might have a distinct advantage. Here’s a brief description of the three main sites with ways you can use them to your advantage. All are free to use and easy to set up. LinkedIn: This site is used for professional networking and is designed to make networking more selective as the company prefers you connect only with people you actually know. It shows your connections up to three degrees away and how you are connected with those individuals. You can search jobs, join discussion groups and research companies. Your profile page resembles an online résumé, but there are also capabilities to display examples of your work. LinkedIn also provides a way for members to write referrals for others that are posted on your profile after you’ve approved them. There are also some job search boards such as Simplyhired.com that can connect with your LinkedIn profile and show the connections you have in the company posting the job. Facebook: Many people are reluctant to use Facebook in their job search, but even if you don’t, you should still be careful about your privacy settings and what you post. Do not post comments or pictures that could be perceived in a negative way. You never know if a friend of a friend might be connected with someone who knows your
Career Guide | Fall 2014 | 5
boss or the recruiter to whom you just sent your résumé. So don’t vent your frustrations about your current job or your job search. Try to also sound upbeat and positive, not desperate for a job. Facebook’s new time line and “about me” section makes it easier for recruiters to find your job history information. Keep that updated with relevant jobs and education. Also, there are several applications in Facebook specifically for professional networking such as BeKnown and BranchOut. Web sites such as Glassdoor.com and Simplyhired.com are job search engines that can show what companies or job postings your Facebook friends are connected to. Twitter: Commonly referred to as microblogging, Twitter has been picked up by many celebrities as a public relations and marketing tool. If your account is public, then anyone may “follow” you and receive your posts in their Twitter feed. Twitter can be used to supplement your online brand. Demonstrate your areas of expertise by tweeting advice, articles and information relevant to your chosen profession or industry. Make your bio professional by including a sound bite from your “elevator speech” that people can see when they find your account. Also consider these ways to maximize the use of any social media sites in your job search. ■ Join discussion boards and use your knowledge and experience to answer others’ questions. ■ Follow recruiters and ask for information regarding their companies’ culture and job postings you’ve seen. ■ “Pay it forward” by reposting their tweets and updates through your social media outlets, as that will leave them with a positive impression of you. Any of these networking sites can be valuable in your job search to increase your visibility and brand you as a quality candidate. Using multiple ways to connect may give you an edge over others in this competitive market. But the key to effective use of social media is to engage in quality ways with other people and especially target companies of interest and industry professionals.
