ANNUAL BULL FEMALE SALE Friday, March 4th, 2016 3:30pm CST K-State’s Stanley Stout Center Manhattan, Kansas

STANLEY STOUT CENTER The Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry has a longstanding tradition of producing and managing outstanding livestock for teaching, research and outreach purposes. Marketing is an essential component of the learning process for K-State AS&I students. The first opportunity for such an event was the Special “K” cattle sale in 1977, which was the first of its kind in the nation. Now known as the Legacy Sale, it is an annual tradition and has been joined in past years by both K-State sheep and horse sales. Livestock sales events at K-State have remained unique over the years, as they are organized and managed by students. The K-State Stanley Stout Center will allow students to showcase the results of their talents and efforts in a state-of-the-art facility. While the primary function of the Stout Center will be to host the Legacy Sale, its location in proximity to campus and the K-State livestock units lends itself to numerous teaching activities and industry events. It will provide an all-weather location for various hands-on courses, extension seminars, live animal demonstrations, and non-university livestock events and sales.

GENERAL INFORMATION individual animal information angus $value indexes All performance information in this catalog is correct to the best of our knowledge. Data was taken from the respective breed associations in February 2016. All measures taken are adjusted by age according to each individual breed association. Performance data followed by an asterisk (*) denotes the weight or measure is actual and is not adjusted for age. Updated performance, breeding, ultrasound and DNA information may be made available in the form of a supplement sheet on the Internet and on sale day. All cattle in the sale are free of Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE), Hypotrichosis (HY), Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) and Developmental Duplication (DD). Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are the best overall prediction of differences in progeny performance and are useful tools that aid in selection; however, EPDs DO NOT PREDICT an actual level of performance. For example, a bull with a birth weight EPD of +3.0 should sire calves approximately two pounds heavier than a bull with a birth weight EPD of +1.0. The actual weight of the calf will depend upon environmental factors. EPDs can be used to compare cattle within a breed but CANNOT be used to compare cattle of different breeds. Spring 2016 average EPDs for the breeds represented in this sale.

explanation of common epds Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit scrotal size to his progeny. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. Ribeye Area EPD (REA) is a predictor of the difference in square inches of ultrasound ribeye area of a sire’s progeny. Fat Thickness EPD (FAT), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in ultrasound fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny.

$Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. It may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

hereford $value indexes

Baldy Maternal Index ($BMI), used for selecting commercial Hereford bulls for use on Angus-cross cows and heifers, where replacement heifers will be raised. Retained ownership of steers and cull heifers through the feedlot phase is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) program grid. Calving EZ Index ($CEZ), used for selecting commercial Hereford bulls for use on yearling heifers only. This index has increased emphasis on direct and maternal calving ease compared with the other indexes. Brahman Influenced Index ($BII), is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in a rotational crossbreeding system with Brahman, rather than Angus. Certified Hereford Beef Index ($CHB), a terminal sire index, where Hereford bulls are mated to British-cross cows, and all offspring are sold as fed cattle on a CHB grid.

simmental epds & $value indexes

Stayability is expressed as the probability that an animal’s daughters will remain in production to at least six years of age when compared to the daughters of another animal. Expressed as deviations from a 50% probability, a higher value indicates increased stayability. All-Purpose Index (API) evaluates sires being bred to both first calf heifers and mature cows with a portion of their daughters being retained for breeding and the cull heifers and steers are fed out. This index includes both production models and maternal values to form an all-inclusive selection tool. Terminal Index (TI) is designed for evaluating sires’ economic merit in situations where they are bred to mature cows and all offspring go to the feedlot. Consequently, maternal traits such as maternal calving ease, maternal weaning weight and female fertility are not considered in the index.

k-state purebred beef unit embraces genomics technologies As you review the offering in the 39th Legacy Sale, please note that many animals have been genotyped. In the fall of 2015, DNA samples were collected from the majority of bulls and heifers at the Purebred Beef Unit available for development and/or selection as replacements. These animals were subsequently genotyped on the GeneSeek GGPLD panel. Genomic information was combined with the animals’ performance based EPD to produce genomically enhanced-expected progeny differences (GE-EPD). The GE-EPD will be available in the supplemental sale sheet provided on request or available sale day for review. Providing additional information regarding an animal’s genetic merit via genomics provides a substantial improvement in EPD accuracy for young animals for conventional growth and carcass traits is valuable. Improvements in the accuracy of EPD for traits like heifer pregnancy, stayability, calving ease, and maternal traits where non-parents won’t have a performance record, may prove to be of even higher value. After all, the decisions that seedstock producers make that result in yearling bulls available for purchase by commercial producers creates all the genetic change in the entire beef value chain. Improving the accuracy of that decision point is expected to have significant impact and value. Current DNA genotyping yields increases in EPD accuracy equivalent to the animal having approximately 10-30 progeny with data recorded. With our use of genomic tools, commercial producers can purchase bulls with EPD accuracies roughly equal to those of bulls that have had all the available traits recorded for their first calf crop. Know that you can buy with confidence at the Legacy sale. Every effort is made to document the genetic merit of our sale bulls and heifers through extensive performance testing and data recording for calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, post weaning gain, ultrasound predictors of carcass merit and now genomic testing. Our dedication to performance testing and adoption of genomic tools assures you, our customer, of the most accurate, science based genetic predictions available in the market place today.

KSU One Tuf Wildcat is a super sweet mare with tons of eye appeal not only from the profile but when riding as well! She is a stout mare that keeps up her pace all day on the ranch and still has years left to grow. She is super cowy and an excellent show prospect as she is a gorgeous mover and looks very flashy on cows. Her loads of talent have been very useful on the ranch as she has covered many pastures with rough country to push cows across the Flint Hills and remained sure footed all the way. Because of how quickly she learned to track cows in the pasture, she is a natural on the hot heels and would make an excellent heel horse with her big stop. Whether looking for a ranch horse, family horse or classy show horse, you will be happy to own this cow horse, athlete and looker!

KSU Slow Gin Fizz is arguably the most experienced and most broke colt K-State has ever offered for sale at the Legacy Sale. This 4 year old, super stout mare has done it all! From gathering pairs in just her first week of riding and consistently every week for several months last summer and fall, to dragging calves to the fire, sorting, loading and holding cattle in the alley, roping and doctoring in the pasture, hauled to ranch rodeos and by the time of the sale will have been used as a flag horse at the KSU Rodeo. This incredibly balanced mare offers muscle, speed, natural cow-sense and quick feet with exceptional movement and ability to take to the show pen as well as on the ranch. Her willingness and her overall “try” is evident in how she moves out freely on the ranch and always shows how she loves having a job to do. This classy sorrel mare will turn heads and draw attention no matter where you take her and with whatever task you give her! With her pedigree, natural ability and disposition she would also make a top broodmare in the best of herds.

ROYAL PARR MONEY

ROYAL CHIC OLENA FANCY GLO PARR

KSU Chic Wrangler is easily the favorite to ride among everyone at the Horse Unit. This beautiful and gentle gelding has been started right and has the second most experience on the ranch out of all the sale colts. He is our best prospect for a novice rider or family horse, but still capable enough to go into a cowboy’s string. He has gathered many pastures, dragged calves, sorted and loaded cattle, roped and doctored on in the pasture and by sale time will have been used as a flag horse for the KSU Rodeo. His incredible trainability has made each ride easy, fun and successful with every task you give him. This attractive gelding is level headed, a big stopper, and a complete natural at lead changes. He shows the most versatility in his future as he has potential to go any direction to show, head, heel, and work on the ranch or babysit the grandkids. His half sibling was the highest selling colt ever sold at K-State at last year’s Legacy Sale. There are very few colts that show this much potential, so don’t pass up an opportunity to own a horse of a lifetime!

Not only is she experienced on the ranch but she has that winning combination of speed, big stops, agility and lots of cow. Her low set hocks allow her to run hard, stop, then rollback effortlessly making her very competitive in any cow horse event. Her maternal half sibling was the 2015 World Champion Tie Down Calf Roping and Reserve World Champion Breakaway Roping at the PHBA World Show and 8th at the 2015 Select AQHA World Show and 2nd in his division. KSU A Country CD is the most green of the colts at the sale this year but don’t let that stop you from finding your next project! Due to an injury in the pasture last summer, which left a bump on her right hock, she was started later than the other colts. This pretty sorrel mare has a great start to her and potential to be an outstanding ranch horse. This mare’s impressive size as a 3 year old will allow her to grow up to be the big and stout ranch horse that every rancher needs for those heavy duty projects. Her very laid back attitude when riding is perfect for someone looking for an easy-going, steady, all day ride. She has been started tracking the hot heels, dragging logs and rode outside to check cows. You don’t find these stout, well-built mares at every sale; don’t miss your chance to own her!

history.

Kansas State University’s purebred beef herd was established in 1881 with the purchase of an Aberdeen-Angus heifer, Eyebright 4th 7131 (7446) from the Ontario Agricultural College. A Hereford bull and heifer, Parley 30782 and Miss Beau Real 7th 30781, were purchased from George Fowler, Maple Hill, Kansas in 1888. These two breeds made up the herd until it was disposed in 1897 due to tuberculin test reactions and an order from the Board of Regents. The Board’s order was the result of concern across the state that K-State’s cattle should be “practical farmer’s livestock” instead of purebred animals. The herd was then reestablished in 1901 with seven different breeds of beef, dairy and dual-purpose cattle.

PUREBRED BEEF TEACHING UNIT

The Purebred Beef Teaching Unit annually runs nearly 300 breeding-age purebred Angus, Hereford, and Simmental cows on 4,000 acres of native bluestem grass. The main headquarters is located in Manhattan at the edge of campus on the corner of Denison and Kimball Avenue. This location houses bull testing facilities, heifer development yard, show barn and office. Mature females are maintained northeast of town about ten miles at the esteemed Cedar Creek Ranch headquarters. This ranch, located just off Highway 13, serves an instrumental role in the teaching aspect of our operation. Here, students have the opportunity to participate in real-world scenarios of beef production and pasture management. These students are employed by the K-State Beef Barn for the 2015 - 2016 year: Jared Bourek, Riley McKinney, Justus Bartonek, Justin Nelson, RJ Ellis, Dan Johnson and Kayci Sperry.

MISSION AND PURPOSE

Our mission is to provide undergraduate students with practical experience in breeding, feeding, management and marketing of purebred seedstock as well as give livestock selection, general animal science courses, and students from colleges across the nation the opportunity to evaluate quality cattle. Each year hundreds of students utilize cattle raised at this unit. The herd also provides an opportunity to demonstrate breeding programs for genetic improvement of seedstock, using tools like performance testing, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and ultrasound carcass evaluation. Applied research trials are conducted using cattle produced in this herd, such as cloning technology, synchronized artificial insemination, feed efficiency and feed additive research. Cattle are also employed for teaching purposes in classes such as Livestock Sales Management, Pregnancy Diagnosis, Bovine Calving, Livestock and Meat Evaluation, and used for competition in the annual Little American Royal. A portion of the cattle produced in this herd are merchandized in the annual “Legacy” Bull and Female Sale held the first Friday in March. This sale is unique to the nation because it is engineered entirely by students to give them hands-on, practical experience in purebred cattle marketing.

history cont’d ... SHOW ACCOLADES K-State has compiled many show accolades in all three breeds, including 2002 NWSS Grand Champion Horned Hereford Female, 2002 NWSS Reserve Champion Simmental Female, 2005 NWSS National Champion Simmental Bull, and many other state and regional championships. More recently, KSU Bounty Hunter 611, the high-selling bull in the 2007 Special K Sale, was named Reserve National Champion Bull at the 2007 and 2008 Canadian Agribition. A son of 611, Big-Gully 611 Bounty 517U, was named RBC Supreme Champion Bull over all breeds, and progeny were part of the Champion Hereford Getof-Sire, Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at the 2010 Agribition. KSU Wildcat 656 ET, high-selling bull in the 2008 Legacy Sale, was named Champion Bull at the 2008 Iowa State Fair, 2008 Kansas State Fair and reserve champion at the 2008 State Fair of Texas. KSU Legacy 654 ET was named Reserve Champion bull at the Missouri State Fair. KSU Star Power 40W was named 2010 Kansas State Fair Champion Simmental Bull. This exposure has attracted students from all over the United States and Canada to enroll at K-State and continue the legacy of excellence in purebred beef cattle breeding.

PRODUCTION SALES

The first Special K production sale was held in 1977. It was unique to the nation because it was a university sale organized and managed by students. A sale has been held each school year since 1977. Early sales rotated between Angus, Simmental and Hereford cattle and included females. In 1987, it was decided to sell all breeds in one annual bull sale. K-State’s most distinguished animal was the Angus heifer, Manhattan Gal. Her national reputation was the momentum behind the first Special K Edition sale. Manhattan Gal was the Supreme Champion Individual at the 1976 Angus Futurity, and the Grand Champion Angus Female at the American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show. The highest selling individual in a Special K sale was Slammer K 04147, a Hereford bull. He was purchased in 1981 by C K Hereford Ranch, Brookville, Kansas, for $12,500. In 2011, a Hereford bull, KSU Revolution 021, commanded $11,100 and went to K-State alums Austin and Emilie Fink and Mike and Shelia Miller of Womelsdorf, PA. K-State’s highest selling female to date was Miss Kansas K 3G, a Simmental donor cow sold at the National Western Stock Show for $16,500.

In 2008, the name of the K-State production sale was changed to the “Legacy” sale to honor 127 years of continuous beef improvement. The K-State Purebred Beef Teaching Unit might be the most unique experience offered to current and potential students in agricultural colleges across the nation. The educational opportunities available to students producing, promoting and merchandising high quality purebred cattle continues to play a fundamental role in a program that has been nationally recognized for excellence in teaching as well as contributing to the outstanding alumni support received by the Kansas State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.
