Welcome to the Energetic & Fun Malave Family! Tania, Quelvid, David (20), Enzo (10), Alessio (7), Leo (6) and Franco (3) Macon Alley Hi there - What do you all do in terms of career, hobbies and interests? As a family, we love soccer, fútbol, calcio, Futsal...all things involving a foot kicking a ball! Besides soccer, we enjoy German Village for the scenery, the ability to leave our car and ride our bikes everywhere. The boys take classes including capoeira at the Schiller Recreation Center. We also love to travel and prefer to gift our kids with experiences from those travels. Quelvid (I call him Q/he goes by David), a year ago in November, closed our used car lot we owned for 12 years and shifted to becoming a Realtor with Caldwell Banker. He is also flipping houses. On the side, he continues to sell some cars and is getting into the stock market. He is a jack of all trades! I am a Freelance Graphic Designer and owner of Tarimella Designs. Now that I am free from managing the car lot and our babies are all in school, I make time for logos, branding and websites. I am also learning Social Media Marketing.

20

Do you have any pets living with you? Last winter, we adopted a stray cat my sister had found and was feeding. When my sister went on vacation, we brought her home and named her Corona after the virus. She became our princess. An older Tortoiseshell cat which loves to sleep and in the warmer months, prefers outside to inside. Our vet said she is 13-15 years old.

22

What is your address?

705 Macon Alley, where one can find a mini soccer field, mini goals, balls flying and kids always playing. Why did you choose German Village for your home? When I moved back to Ohio in 2007, after Chicago and Nebraska, my sisters were both in the Village and I fell in love with the city feel. I met my husband shortly after and my husband loved GV! But when we had our first baby, we tried to leave the neighborhood, but came back within a year and rented on Lazelle until we found our current home. After four years of a complete overhaul down to the studs, 705 became our forever home with a secret hideout and tunnels to get in-between rooms.

Do you plan to stay in German Village as your family grows up? Yes! We love it here...pre-COVID, we enjoyed Sundays at FirstWatch, sitting for coffee at our local stops, fresh produce from the Farmer’s Market at Saint Mary’s, treats from Pistascia Vera (requested from family far and wide) and weekend soccer games at the St.Mary’s parking lot...and of course our chats with our neighbors. Now with COVID, we make the best of the warm days with bike rides and ice cream at Jeni’s and on days like these, sledding in Schiller Park! The only thing that will move us is if one of the boys gets invited to play abroad...then we may temporarily leave :)

23

Do you have favorite family activities in the Village?

I think the thing the boys will never forget about GV is the Haus & Garten Tour! Every year, they started a tradition to set-up a lemonade stand just outside the house, and every year it has not disappointed! They practice customer service, food service, math, selling/running a business while save up for college and getting some spending money when we travel.

If your child is in school, please tell us where. Trey will start preschool at St Joseph’s Montessori in the Fall!

Do you have favorite family activities in the Village? During the quarantine we have taken advantage of all the empty parking lots; Trey has become quite skilled on his scooter and Claire discovered her shadow! We usually spend the afternoon post-nap in Frank Fetch park playing hide-and-go seek and moving the bricks (to obviously make a garage for the hot wheels). In the past, we have enjoyed the Saint Mary’s Oktoberfest and the Easter egg hunt in Schiller Park. Santa arriving to help light the tree in Fetch Park is something we look forward to every year! We are also sure to stop by Winan’s during daily walks so the kids (both human and canine) can get a treat - treats for mom & dad are found by visiting Julie & Faye at Hausfrau.

Please tell us about the advantages of being a family in an urban neighborhood? Besides all the fun things we love, listed above? I would say the people! We have met so many fun and nice people. I love that my kids know more people than I do since they are always outside; and people always stop and talk to our boys and make them feel so loved!

Is there a stay-at-home mom or dad in the family? If not, do you get help from caregiver? With COVID, we all came home so it was an adjustment!! We had a nanny for years when our older boys were little but now value the Montessori school where they all attend inperson, daily. If your children are in school, please tell us where. Columbus Montessori Education Center (on James Road). Do you have other help? With four boys at home, our house stays busy and we do ask for assistance from them in helping with cleaning!

Meet talented piano and voice coach Cantor Lauren Bandman! Macon Alley Where you were born, raised and educated? I have lived in 8 states as well as Italy and Israel! My family moved all over the United States as I was growing up. As an adult, I continued my travels for various study and professional opportunities. I have so enjoyed living and performing throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The more I traveled, the more I discovered that I am a true Midwesterner at heart. My family is here. I have deep roots in Columbus, and Ohio feels like home. I'll never forget watching my first live musical performance at a young age - West Side Story. I was completely mesmerized. Although I began my music studies as an instrumentalist, first a pianist and then a serious clarinetist - Musical Theatre has always been my first love. Throughout high school, I performed in community theatre. I studied a more classical approach to singing through aria and art song at The Ohio State University, where I earned my Bachelor of Music Education. For graduate studies, I went to Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, first in Jerusalem and then in New York City, where I earned my Master's degree and Cantorial Ordination.

27

How and when did you get involved with your art or music: As long as I can remember, our family of five would pass the time on long road trips by singing together. I can still hear my dad's bass voice singing 'his part' of You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin', the Righteous Brothers song that was one of our family favorites. When I was six years old, my mother bought a piano for our family home. She enrolled us both in lessons. Right from the start, I was completely hooked. Music became an outlet for

me and has always been an integral part of my life.

I have an appreciation for myriad genres of music. My parents played a lot of Simon and Garfunkel records in our home, leading me to fall in love with harmony. My older brother is responsible for my love of classic rock introducing me to greats such as The Beatles and The Doors. Folk music was a large influence as well - Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Eva Cassidy and John Denver taught me the power of melody and a compelling story. Now, my musical tastes span the gamut from my early influences to all genres of current music. I love learning about new musical artists through friends and students. In addition to piano and guitar, one of the benefits of teaching a holistic vocal technique that can be applied to all vocal genres is that my students bring music that is meaningful to them, introducing me to repertoire I might not have been exposed to otherwise. In my studio, repertoire selection is truly a collaboration between teacher and student, allowing every student to express themselves through their preferred repertoire. I remember one lesson where we worked on both, Mozart and Lizzo, in the same session!

Where can we find more information about what you do? Facebook: www.facebook.com/TheStudioLaurenBandman Website: www.LaurenBandman.com

You can find me performing with various theatre companies and with Vaughn Wiester's Famous Jazz Orchestra https://youtu.be/b_o4c4TVOn4?list=PL_M3BL8cD-c1ogJkVfTeGKBQAxkSSCYUp.

I co-created Love's Journey, a one-woman show that tells the story of a woman's journey through life and love through musical theatre and American standards. Here is an excerpt from a favorite: https://youtu.be/E5V-2skiQTo

Please tell us about living in German Village I love our neighborhood! As a former New Yorker, I love the walkability of our village. You can find me strolling around Schiller Park, admiring the sculptures and the gardens. I am so grateful for all the beauty our neighborhood has to offer, particularly little surprises like all the beautiful window boxes, Frank Fetch park gardens in the spring, and outdoor concerts in the summer. I delight in the many wonderful local restaurants in which to enjoy a delicious meal and a nice glass of wine, or a perfectly mixed cocktail. But my favorite thing about German Village - the people! I love our community and the friends I have made here.

Any other thoughts? After serving as Senior Cantor of a large congregation in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly a decade, I made the decision to return to Ohio to be closer to family. Coming back to Columbus and opening The Studio: Private Music Lessons - where I teach voice, piano, guitar, audition preparation and Jewish Studies - was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I adore my students! While I teach people of all ages, the majority of my students are adults and teenagers spanning all skill levels, from beginner to professional. With the help of technology, I am able to work with students all over the country and to safely continue lessons during the pandemic. I look forward to resuming in-person lessons soon .

pet Toby

Toby Frankfort Street Meet Bethany and Patrick Wolf's adorable Toby! Our four-legged family member is a 2 year old, tri-color Bernese Mountain Dog named Toby. He’s the friendliest 100-lb pup you’ll ever meet!

36

Where did you find wonderful Toby? We got Toby from a breeder in rural Ohio. He was the last pup in the litter to be picked, so they truly saved the best for last! We hadn’t decided on a name when we went to pick-up our new pup, and found out one of the breeder’s children had named him “Toby.” We couldn’t have picked a more perfect name for our happy, smiley boy!

Does he know any special tricks? Toby loves to shake and high-five for a treat! Although not a trick, anyone who has walked past our home has seem him put his two front paws on our gate and hop along with villagers walking by. He loves to say hi, try to get some pets, or make people smile!

What are his favorite activities? Toby is truly the best of both worlds-he’s very outgoing and loves meeting new friends but also loves to spend a day on the couch! He is very social and must go to daycare a few days a week to spend some time with his friends! He loves to lay outside (sun, rain or snow!) to say hi to villagers passing by. He also loves to spend time with his human cousins!

Snow day fun!

39

Why is having a pet important to you? We can’t imagine not having Toby! He makes us smile every single day and has been a great companion, especially over the unprecedented last year! Pets are a great reminder that everything will turn out just fine! We’ve made so many friends simply because of Toby (A pet parent at Toby’s daycare, Dogtopia, is now one of Bethany’s best friends!)

Would you like to add anything? Toby loves to make new friends and is sure to make you smile, so please say hi if you see us around the village! He even has own Instagram, too - MrTobyBerner.

house Interior Designer

Sally McDonald

From the book: German Village Stories Behind the Bricks John M. Clark The Beauty Parlor 180 East Beck Street The Franklin County's Auditor's online records for this address, and virtually every other address in Columbus date back only as far as 1920. There is little doubt, however, that this two-story home is much older. Over the years it has served both residential and commercial purposes. Some neighbors have recalled a time when a beauty parlor occupied the first floor.

Buy Here But big changes were on the horizon when, in 1999, two men bought the property and began a full restoration. First white paint was removed, revealing the natural brick exterior.

Great care was taken in renovating the homes interior, as well. Architect, William Hugus, replicated the original baseboards, doors and window-casings. Wood windows were replaced. No detail was too small or too big, including custom-made door hinges and knobs, Frenchdesigned house numbers by the front door and a concealed second-story "safe room". A dilapidated non-historic garage behind the house was demolished and replaced by a combination two-story garage and carriage house. A tunnel, doubling as a wine cellar, was dug to connect the main house to the new structure in the back.

52

Markings on the bricks seem to indicate a one-time large picture window. And for many years, the building was painted white. Some decorative brick work alongside of the house.

The backyard fence is built to showcase a pine tree for walkers by.

The adorable nook that is part of the transition from the original house and the newer addition.

The Spread

The home and its owners were featured in the 2008 German Village Haus and Garten tour. If you are interested in more tales about the history of other homes and commercial buildings in German Village click here for German Village Stories - Behind the Bricks.

go Rehoboth Beach and Historic Lewes, Delaware

Destination Rehoboth Beach and Historic Lewes, Delaware with Kyle on East Beck Street! For a domestic, relaxing, getaway, check out lovely Rehoboth Beach and historic Lewes, Delaware. Where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean giving visitors two versions of seawater and beaches to enjoy while visiting this laidback and artsy, fun area. I went there because one of my girlfriends, Beth, a native New Yorker, retired there after living in midtown Manhattan. The beach life (in season), cost of real estate and very little taxation appealed to her. She talked about the move for a number of years before buying a condo. For some unknown reason I did not think that it would be that special, but when I went there Labor Day weekend 2020, I discovered I loved it too! The previous picture is the main entrance to Rehoboth Beach from the boardwalk. Enjoying Rehoboth Beach along the Atlantic and taking a stroll down the boardwalk.

60

We decided to have lunch at Victoria's Restaurant located within the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel.

The lovely view of beach and ocean from inside the restaurant.

Shops and restaurants along Rehoboth Avenue that lead you to the entrance of the boardwalk and beach!

My friend Beth in front of one of the many breweries in the area - Crooked Hammock Brewery.

Along the canal.

We took a water tour along the canal that runs through Lewes to Rehoboth Beach.

62

We enjoyed tasting wine at a local winery in Lewes called the Nassau Valley Vineyards. New construction of housing developments is on steroids in coastal Delaware. This is one of the pools with a swim up bar and clubhouse at the development where Beth lives. There are lots of amenities at the new developments and both bay and ocean beaches are very close. With such an old town, there is also historic housing. There are lots of bike paths and nature walkways and the land is flat for those that don't want to bike or hike up hills.

With Delaware's beginnings in the early 1600's there are many historic sites along the coastline. You might even bump into President Joe Biden who has a summer house on Rehoboth Beach! I look forward to going again to relax and enjoy the beauty of this special place!
