Introduction to Design

Dot/Line Gestalt Theory was developed to describe how people orgnaize visual elements when certain principals are appleied. The idea behind the Dot/Line assignment was to express something complex with simple shapes. It was a challenge to use abstraction in a way that communicated the intended message clearly. This assignment really forced me to step back and think about what each element of my art communicated.

Designer Presentation The hardest part about the designer presentation was finding the right designer. David Carson was a Pro Surfer who found design after his surfing career ended. His use of typography caught my eye instantly, and his motto: “Don’t mistake legibiliy for communication” really made me think about the role of art and design in commnication.

Hand Lettering The Hand Lettering progect was all about creativity. Our task was to take a word and creatively produce art the communicated the various meanings that word has. I created a web (right) to organize my thoughts before i jumped into creating pages of different ways to draw the word drift. I enjoyed this project, and gained an appreciation for how many things one word can mean.

Object Iterations The objective of the Object Iterations was to portray an animal using various media and inspiration. This tested my range as an artist, forcing me to learn new ways of creating art. Much of what makes Goldendoodles so unique is their personality. So in order to accuratly represent them, I not only had to understand their character, but also be able to represent that artistically. I had a lot of fun with this project, and am very pleased with how it turned out.

Instructional The Intstructional Poster was a lesson on how to incorporate word and text to communicate a process or task. This project required me to reconfigure my layout multiple times. It was difficult to keep it clean and simple. With much thought and concideration, I was able to communicate a process that was previously just muscle memory to me. Previously, I did not realize the importance of the small details. Every step in the process must be executed perfectly for it to be successful.

Children’s Book The Children’s Book was a glimpse into the real world of a designer. We got to work with education students (clients) to create the illustrations for a story they wrote for young students. It was fun to bring a stroy to life. I found this to be the easiest project, but it was also the most time consuming. Our children’s book creation was the most rewarding, because the final priduct was shared with the client, who will in turn share it with the children it was written for.
