PORTFOLIO

2016

hello. I’m Kyle Robertson. I’m originally from the Highlands of Scotland and currently live in Glasgow, Scotland where I am studying Product Design and Innovation (BSc) at the University of Strathclyde. Good design to me generates a significant and meaningful emotional connection with the user. I love designs that focus on enhancing the user experience and remove the unessential features. The whole brand experience is important to the user and I am intrigued by all of its aspects from the graphics to the final product. From a young age I have always had an interest in how things worked, why they had certain forms and how they were put together. Throughout school this interest grew and I developed a desire to improve the world through the creation of new and useful things. Since then I have strived to be involved in the development and design of products. At the University of Strathclyde I have been able to cultivate the skills needed to develop my thoughts and ideas and turn them into something real. Being an active person, I have always had a restless mind. This helps me to be a very persistent, hard-working and creative designer.

Currently undertaking my final years study of (BSc) Product Design and Innovation at the University of Strathclyde. Predicted to achieve a 1 : 1. During my studies I have been able to develop the skills needed to develop original and innovative products. The course offers an understanding of fundamental design and engineering skills and knowledge alongside a strong awareness of manufacture and enterprise management processes. Much of the degree is assessed via coursework, this has allowed me to develop my visualisation and presentation skills that are important to communicate a design. Key Projects:

AWARDS 2012 - PRESENT 2012

The Blitz Achievement Award, The Blitz Awards.

2011

The Queens Badge, The Boy’s Brigade.

2011

Millennium Volunteer Award, Coaching with Highland Wildcats.

SKILLS SOFTWARE

Portable Police Communication: As part of my final year of study I am undertaking an individual project. The aim of this project is to design and develop an innovative user centred, update to Police Scotland’s current communication solution. Evolving Visitor Experience: Working with the RSPB as a team of 4 we are to develop an improved user experience for families with young children and first-time visitors through new and novel interactions when viewing birds and other wildlife.

FORMSPEAK Personal Project

12 Weeks

3rd Year University Project. Design an audio speaker that evokes a defined emotional demonstrates a novel approach to form.

INSPIRATION

After exploring a range of posiible emotions anxiety was chosen, I felt that anxiety provided the potential to truly explore the form and its relation to emotion. Not always a negative emotion anxiety would be a complex emotion to embody and elicit. A range of influences were involved in providing inspiration for the exploration of form. The following were key: •

The body language of anxious animals where they tend to lower their head and tilt their lower body when they feel threatened or vulnerable. The product should look, unbalanced or on edge, this is to represent the “flight or fright” response that our body produces to protect ourselves in a perceived harmful situation.

An architectural influence will be seen to represent how buildings loom overhead creating a sense of entrapment and anxiety.

The use of shadows should be used to create the sense of uncertainty in the product.

These main features will be complimented with small details throughout the product to highlight the key characteristics of the product.

EXPLORATION OF FORM

The form was explored with the influence of the earlier identified inspirations to generate a design that truly embodied the sentiment of anxiety.

6 Weeks

3rd Year University Project.

BY MĂ KO

To develop a refined concept for a new product/system that provokes a change in peoples interactions with make-up and workings of the material world.

Observations

By studying a selection of subjects and their interactions with a range of products, power tools were chosen as the target product sector for the project. It was observed that the current interactions with power tools required some technical knowledge and a certain degree of confidence. This was reflected in the current aesthetics and ergonomics of power tools, many of the devices are extremely focused on functionality with cautioning colours, complicated detailing and a large amount of noise and vibration feedback. These combined design features result in an intimidating experience for many users. The aim of this design will be to develop an intriguing and inviting power tool by reducing the depth of interactions needed by the user.

IDEATION

To create an effective solution to the identified problem it was important to identify what made the current products intimidating. Once these elements had been identified a range of ideas that removed these features were explored.

Further developed sketches focused towards a design with a circular cross section with mock-ups then being used to test how users would interact with each concept. The feedback from this test led to the final concept being selected.

RENEWABLE LIGHTING Group Project

12 Weeks

2nd Year University Project. To develop a novel lighting system powered by a renewable source. The theme of the lighting system is of the teams choosing.

Development The team developed a range of initial ideas to generate power. These ranged from solar to tidal. The team decided that a miniaturised hydroelectric solution could be utilised to provide light in the bathroom. It was the suggested that the light and energy generation system could be integrated into a shower radio. Sketches, Illustator line drawings and mock-ups were used to explore the form before the final concept was selected. A prototype was then developed to act as a proof of concept that this product could function. A further selection of Illustator line drawings were developed to explore materials, finishes and colours of the product on photoshop.

MATERIAL EXPLORATION

With the concept selected and the functionality tested illustrator sketches were used to explore the potential materials that could be used to finish the product and the effect that this will have on the aesthetics of the product.
