p1 ibos vitart architectes As part of my graduate studies in Paris, France I was placed into an internship at Ibos Vitart Architectes. While there, I mainly worked on two projects; a hotel/mixed use development in Bordeaux, France which was in design development and a competition for a metro station in the suburbs of Paris. My roles for the Bordeaux complex were to keep an up-to-date 3d model of the hotel, office and parking while producing renderings for client meetings. I was also heavily involved in the development of the facades, creating many iterations of each building for client presentations as well as the preliminary hotel room layout. As for the competition, I worked directly with the two principals and founders Jean Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart to develope an overall concept for the form, circulation and aesthetics of the station, which is almost completely underground. While rendering was done out-of-house, I was responsible for the creation of diagrammatic plans, sections and schema. For this I used mostly Abobe illustrator and AutoCad. The winner has yet to be announced.

7

The number of inputs into the site such as pedestrians, a tram stop, buses and taxis required a simple solution that was accessible and clear from all directions, funneling riders easily to and from the station. A simple rectangular canopy was conceived as a method to collect the riders and guide them to and from the station. This canopy also provides protection from the elements as well as information related to the schedule of the trains which is holographically displayed onto the ceiling.

an architecrure of use An Architecture of Use is a book written by two of my professors from the University of Kansas, Kent Spreckelmeyer and Stephen Grabow. I was asked to produce several drawings (13 in total) for use in this book. These drawings required my own interpretations of sometimes illegible source materials that called for research into each building. Using Adobe illustrator, I produced these 13 drawings over a 5 month period while living and working in California and studying in Paris. This required constant communication with my professors in order to exchange thoughts on line weights, drawing conventions and other issues. The book is expected to be published in January of 2015.

01 100x7 center My first project at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris Val de Seine, the 100x7 center began only as a site measuring 100m x 7m in the 18th district of Paris. The program was to be determined by the team members (two french students and myself). The plot was located in a heavily North African neighborhood, which was characterized by large, 60’s era public housing buildings, small markets and graffiti. After some research, we discovered that over 50% of the women and 35% of the men were illiterate in this district. As a response, we designed a vertical volume with classrooms and multi-use spaces that are flooded with natural daylight on two sides. By stacking these classrooms vertically at the edge of the plot, the scale of the neighborhood is maintained while leaving a large portion of the lot open. Taking advantage of the linear space, we created a series of small enclosed “huts” that would accommodate a large range of activities, such as live performances, small markets, and neighborhood parties. These huts break up the extreme linearity of the site, creating smaller, more intimate spaces. The long space terminates with a small amphitheater that projects live music throughout the space. 19

while the classrooms have a need for natural light, views to the adjacent lots must be inhibited. Use of windows above eye level in the classrooms and heavy screens on the promenade accommodate this goal.

02 axes verts A group project with two French students at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris Val de Seine, the urban scale project called for the doubling of the built density within a prescribed area. This in and of itself is not difficult; however, maintaining appropriate amounts of open space and light made this very difficult within the already dense neighborhood. Our solution was les axes verts or the green axes; a paved and vegetated pedestrian promenade. These axes connect new and exisiting parks within the city and act as pedestrian-safe corridors of activity. At the terminus of each axis is a park and a hyperdense commercial and residential node. Each node acts as a totem for it’s corresponding park while also creating a hub of social and economic activity for the surrounding blocks. The new neighborhood itself is a mix of private, social and student housing, creating a vibrant socioeconomic mix, that also preserves part of the historic fabric of Paris.

03 shifted

living

The shifted living apartment project was part of a structure and detailing seminar class at École Nationale SupÊrieure d’Architecture de Paris Val de Seine. The focus was on maintaining and expressing an architectural idea through detailing and structural design. The apartments were conceptualized as a stack of wooden boxes, sliding past one another. In order to achieve this, my team (including one French and one Swiss student) utilized KLH laminated wood members as our structural system. These allowed for quick, on site assembly that also provided mass for acoustic dampening. Each unit is acoustically isolated from its neighbor, creating a quiet and private living space. Aesthetically, we chose a familiar, but contemporary, pitched roof that would blend in with the more conservative neighborhood.

04 out

crop

Conceived as an outcrop of rock rising from the ground, the out_CROP culinary incubator is a community center based around food. The skill of farming, the art of cooking, and the finesse of business all combine under one roof in the out_crop. Placed in an economically troubled neighborhood, the incubator is a means to help educate and propel individuals into the business of food. The culinary labs are adjacent to a large open space where onlookers could buy fresh produce at the weekly market or sample the creations from a newly launched food truck.

05 Chicago lyric opera Designed as a replacement for the current performance hall of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Chicago Lyric Opera House was sited on an empty lot near the north bank of the Chicago river. The site is surrounded by skyscrapers on all sides, much like most of downtown Chicago. To counter this extreme verticality, my team (3 Americans) designed an opera house with very horizontal features, including a massive cantilever meant to reflect the dance of light from the city and river. Inside, the auditorium is suspended in a glowing box above the main bar, creating a dramatic atmosphere within the lobby. The adjacent plazas create a pedestrian scale that is lacking in most of Chicago while providing a space for spontaneous activities both during and after the show. This plaza transforms from a cool summer retreat to an ice skating rink in the winter. The shopping and cafes to the north provide a constant stream of activity around the plaza both during and after opera season.
