Fly To Me MOVABLE MICRO COMMUNAL CENTER Fill in the missing functions in cities and bring new vitality @Large Cities Around the World TEAMZERO Award Architecture Student Design Competition Time: 2014.06 - 2014.07 Category: Academic Design, Teamwork (Team leader) Collaborator: Dingqi Zhou, Congwei Zeng, Lingyu Jian, Yunzheng Cheng Instructor: Jianxin Zhang Captain E.O. -- We are here to change the world In our cities nowadays there are so many buildings changing our life with different functions and different styles. However, there are still many problems come out in our daily life, especially in our communities all through the city. So can we make a different thing in our city to make life better? Sure we can. We are able to utilize the modularity and rationality of our modern technology to create a new kind of movable architecture - a Flying Cube .

COMMUNITY CONDITION Old communities remain the traditional form of buildings and have nearly no space for people to "enjoy" their life. Things here are in a mess and even hardly create a suitable space for people's daily life. Mass construction without planning in the 1990s causes the result of the chaotic building patterns in the cities, which also leads to the difficulty of alterations and refurbishment of the original cities. Small space in the community, provide little or even no space for excercise during our daily life. Citizens are forced to join a outdoor excercise, which can be far from home, and this can be really inconvenient. Developing cities build so many new residential districts which is far away from the central life space in the cities. People have to spend long time to get to the shopping center, the libraries, and the museums.

The communities are relatively old with single function and lack of attractiveness. The Aging problem gradually occurring in the community, but the functions did not make a corresponding change. Early design theory cannot adapt to the modern life style and lead to a poor life experience with relatively bad traffic conditon.

Community

After2000

The rapid development of new cities with less consideration leads to the uncomfortable scale of the districts. Functions in the cities are excessively concentrated, which can be really inconvenient for the citizen. Communities are blocked and people cannot get in touch with others in our soceity.

Vibrant In The School UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CENTER Diversify the organization of students' daily life @Yangzhou_China Architecture Design Studio 3 Time: 2013.05 - 2013.06 Category: Academic Design, Personal Work Instructor: Meng Su A students' center always gives the school much vitality. The integration of several organizational functions makes the space a real 'CENTER' in our school. The pure outline of the architecture combine with the beautiful landscape creates an harmonious atmosphere. The eager student, the focused teacher, the citizen nearby, the curious tourists will all find a excellent space that meets their needs. The slope and the platform outside the center highly improved the sociality, as well as the visual experience. And inside open space create a great environment for public communication, research and many social activities.

Basic Routes

Pull Up

Original circulation routes highly affected by the different function parts in the campus. We can find out the general relationship between those buildings, which determines how the students or the teachers spend their time. And then the most suitable place for an "Center" just pops up.

Push In

Simply using a direct way to make a large space, not just in the surface level, but in a three dimensional form. By doing this, we can find out the relationship between the students center with other facilities, which is important for a public activity center used by much people in the university.

Lakes and Grassland, both of these two factors is very important, especially in the campus. Taking them into consideration, we figure out a way to push in some parts and then we can get what we need - the new viewpoints from more surfaces of the building and we can find the beauty of the school.

DORMITORY

Split up

Up & Down

While breaking into two different parts, it is obvious that we will have two different main functions. I would like to define them as "Quiet" and "Active". They may serve several attractive public spaces for people in the campus. And I believe they will achieve a great consistency in space.

Public Deck

As we do some little tricks on the shape, we get some extra view points - two great slope, which is excellent for enjoy the view. The center largely changes people's routes in the school. They tend to approach the center more because its functionality and its affinity for the environment.

The Students Center itself forms its own territory and in some ways becomes a "relatively cohesive" and "generally interactive" part in the campus. The public outer space - the Deck, gives the students a chance to enjoy the landscape of the school, to get involved in more activities.

The introduction of the creative program will attract invesitors from various areas, because the increasing number of the artists. Private gallery's attractive atmosphere gave us a chance to enjoy the true arts, perfect site in a quiet place makes it even more fascinating. The great space division and the open space inside the gallery, both of them show us the access to the ARTs. The shape of the roof is full of tension, and interact with the landscape in all directions.

FUNCTION COMPONENTS & COMBINATION POSSIBILITIES Private Gallery

With different shaping methods we can define various function combinations and the space relations. During the design, I tried to think in ways to find out how to make the space more attractive, and more reasonable. Concepts are from the nature world, the geometry, the old architectures etc. All of them follow some rules, which lead them to a relative better and harmonious function arrangement. Pushing, Cutting, digging and adding, diverse ways give you distinct feeling. Taken the different functions into consideration, they shared the same core method - Public Open Space, which is the vital part in designing a public building. So I need to think more about the people's feeling while they are in the gallery, about visual, as well as conceptual. The architecture is an artwork itself, it is conveying the owner's view of the art. The arrangement of the space can effectively reflect the architects' thought, So I take time to research on it deeply.

RENEWAL OF THE CANAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTER FOR THE CANAL Multi-function city public center @Yangzhou_China Architecture Design Studio 5 Time: 2013.11 - 2013.12 Category: Academic Design, Teamwork (Concept Design, Renderings, Technical Drawings) Collaborator: Dingqi Zhou Instructor: Jianxin Zhang The Grand Canal, as the most important canal in China, which provide space for the river transportation. However, in the modern society, citizens may have ignored its great convenience. Yangzhou is a very important part of the Grand Canal, and the culture and the history all merges here. The International Conference Center for the Canal is not just a space for having a meeting, it is actually an open space for all the citizens. It will not only serve the conference or the exhibition, but will educate the public about the history of the Great Canal and the culture of Yangzhou. Our proposal focus on the designing of the open space, and we create a plaza for people to enjoy their life there. By bringing the program to the area, we believe the quality of citizens' life can be greatly improved.

The Grand Canal ( also known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal ), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the longest canal or artificial river in the world and a famous tourist destination. Starting at Beijing, it passes through Tianjin and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the city of Hangzhou, linking the Yellow River and Yangtze River. The oldest parts of the canal date back to the 5th century BC, although the various sections were finally combined during the Sui dynasty (581–618 AD). (From Wikipedia) Han Gou is known as the second oldest section of the later Grand Canal since the Hong Gou ('Canal of the Flying Geese', or 'Far-Flung Canal') most likely preceded it. So actually Yangzhou is one of the places who have a long history, and in fact, the Grand Canal, is one of the most important thing in Yangzhou City.

The culture, mainly lyre-playing, chess, calligraphy and painting, are well organized as some of functions into the site, co-operate with the architecture, which follows the classic garden design method, involving the organization of water, stone and trees. The whole site is not just a place for the positive experience of overcoming the need for an open space in such a center place in the city, but also for social and individual experience of rethinking themselves, which has since become a more important meaning of the project. The project also focuses on material using, combination of bamboo and wood, which is traditional Chinese building material, with Steel and transparent glass, the modern ones, together makes the project classic, but also full of technology.

CHINESE ELEMENTS IN GARDEN DESIGN

Water Arrangement

The main buildings are usually placed beside the water, and pavilions surround the lake to see it from different points of view. The garden usually has a pond for lotus flowers, with special pavilion for viewing them. There are usually goldfish in the pond, with pavilions over the water for viewing them.

Stone Organization

The mountain peak was a symbol of virtue, stability and endurance in the philosophy, of Confucius and in the I Ching. A mountain peak on an island was also a central part of the legend of the Isles of the Immortals, and thus became a central element in many classical gardens.

Planting

They represent nature in its most vivid form, and contrast with the straight lines of the architecture and the permanence, sharp edges and immobility of the rocks. They change continually with the seasons, and provide both sounds (the sound of rain on banana leaves or the wind in the bamboo) and aromas to please the visitor.

Construction

Classical gardens traditionally have these structures: The ceremony hall (ting or tang), The principal pavilion (dating), The pavilion of flowers (huating), The pavilion facing the four directions (simian ting), The lotus pavilion (hehua ting), The pavilion of mandarin ducks (yuanyang ting).

GENERATION STRATEGY Combination of the traditional Chinese culture: lyreplaying, chess, calligraphy and painting and the classic Chinese garden design. Site located in a place not only near the residential district, but also close to the most beautiful park in Yangzhou - Slender West Lake Park. Such a public place here forms into an open space for communication, recreation and entertainment. Bringing the old visual feeling with the brand new function together makes the space more suitable for citizen to enjoy their morning excercise, afternoon break as well as an evening walk.

Using different materials which are selected from the traditional Chinese building makes the whole site involves into a great atmosphere of "harmony" and "peace". M ater ial, the basic element of the whole architecture, help improve the shape of the building. Natural material cooperate with some aspects of mind and perception, as well as a process to produce them, finally form into the virtual material. Different materials reflect different kind of feeling, so we use stone, glass or other things in different walls or facades, to get a totally individual visual feeling at various place in the site. People can enjoy the change of material during the visit, and also interact with the flexible form of the using of them.

NEW LIFESTYLE Path in the public center give people different choice, whatever you go above ground or underground you can always find it is interesting to spend your time relax yourself here. Various space around the path bring more vitality to the whole center, which is great for people to get through them, and enjoy the exellent visual feelling. In the core of the public center, we design a small landscape construction here, which is in honor of the element of "Stone" in traditional Chinese Garden design. Varied height of the construction give us a concept of float mountain in the city, which bring our mind to a wilder space, making the center a better place for relaxing.

Lights with shadows, motion with still, culture with life, environment with human, all these things together makes a great space for people to be true and think about their life, talk about their life, and enjoy their life. And that is what the architecture really means - to give human a space for meditaion, rethinking, and reshaping.

Big square in the north part of the center gives people a large space for communication and entertainment. People can stay here to enjoy their life. In the morning, it also provides space for people who want to excercise but have no place to go in the past. Sunshine lays down and citizen can benefit a lot from such a intersected and multi-functional space.
