exploration in bioluminescence
based on the cookie cutter shark, the two models use the interaction between darkness and light as an attractor.
site analysis
situated at the base of downtown, the site has strategic advantages that will allow it to be a catalyst for future development of the waterfront. it is at the intersection of multiple modes of transportation, offers access to the water, and can serve as a public gathering space.

fluidity in the grid
serving as a much needed gateway to the water, the building will entice visitors to come to the site, encourage interaction and maximize waterfront views. the form of the building, essentially a cube, rejects the surrounding elevated infrastructure while embracing the grid of the city. intersecting fluid forms within the cubic volume integrates the building with its urban context. this move allows for the creation of specific features, including an amphitheater, waterfall and observation deck.

passive building strategies
the building is orientated in a direction to maximize the potential for natural ventilation. louvers placed at the top and bottom of the building facing the canal allow for fresh air to enter the building and travel through the building forcing warm air out. the shape of the roof allows rainwater to be harvested and utilized by the aquariums water features. this water can be chilled before circulating through the system to fuction as a building cooling system.
