MULTI-UNIT HOUSING

This housing studio session sought to design an apartment complex with 20 units, with mixed sizing. I began with a study of the site, which is in the historic neighborhood of Over the Rhine, and the expansion of the Liberty Street in the 1960’s which destroyed every building on the edge of the street, leaving a massive scar. Using site lines, I divided the site geometrically to locate dividing walls. The facade is divided into apartments, with each apartment having a private balcony. My goal was to unify the building into the texture and rhythm of the existing landscape and keep a human scale at street level.

ROWING FACILITY

The Cincinnati Rowing Clubhouse and Training Center is designed to be placed along the Ohio river, with a view pointed at downtown Cincinnati. Using the flood levee wall and existing roadway as datum lines, the building is designed in two separate but related forms: one containing the training facility and lockerooms, and the other serving as boat storage and dock.

SUMMER 2015 / UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI

Beginning with the consideration of context, on the Newport Kentucky side of the levee which contains historic brick architecture, I chose a design based on the structure of a rowing boat, a shell with diagonal supports, in two and four barrel forms. This design is meant to not feel out of place in the context of Newport. The boathouse, which lies on the river side of the levee, does not need to appeal to any urban context, it is fully divorced from Newport itself. This allowed for a design based on program, in which shifts could be made to allow for easier removal and placement of 40 foot long rowing boats into the Ohio river to be ready for racing position.
