Selected Works Thesis
The figure in architecture is neglected and feared. This thesis embraces the figure. The exploration seeks an alternative starting point for architecture that does not originate from abstracted forms. Using a literal figure as massing, the head is taken as the architectural primitive. The figure in its nature, has apriori associations. In its reading, the figure creates an engagement. The application of the figure in architecture however, has a nonliteral reading of massing; where there is a disruption between form and its function. This thesis reimagines these dual readings to suggest a different role of the figure in architecture that does not involve meaning. My proposal is played out at the LACMA campus and continues with the idea of the campus in terms of the scattered buildings across a landscape. The heads are on a plinth, organized by a grid. The figure in plan rejects the grid and provides large open circulation paths for paintings. These paths ultimately lead you to the heads which house large scale sculptures. I am pursuing the phenomenological object through the use of a pictorial figure. The nonrepresentational figure is linguistically meaningless yet phenomenologically exceptional. It is not meant to have meaning. It is meant to turn heads.

The figure is treated as a tillable brick; it aggregates and interlocks as an enclosure system. Figure becomes field. Field becomes figure. The relationship between the natural qualities of the wood and the synthetic qualities of laminated plywood creates a tension between the figure and the material. The wood is then treated in such a way where we are creating a new synthetic wood, by combining different types of laminated woods. The variety of woods with unique characteristics, coloration, patterning, and thickness are then recombined as to create a new whole. The application of the fabrication process of milling the material in combination with the topography of the figure produces graphic effects with inherent painterly qualities with variation in grain and coloration. These graphic effects of the grains when recombined are how we developed our brush strokes in order to establish the new painterly relationship of the figure to the material. The shift of grain and coloration creates a tension between the figure and the material producing effects on the building creating an interaction between the architecture and its viewers.
