Architects spend an entire life with this unreasonable idea that you can fight against gravity. - Renzo Piano
Boston, MA, 02115 | 1335 Boylston Street 1-516-658-9132
I was born and raised in Saint James on Long Island, New York. As a young child I always found my self drawing different things that I saw and imagined. I loved drawing and making things, but was unsure what to do with my talent. I was originally considering going to school for art, but after shadowing at Mancini Architecture, I realized that I could use my love for art and making in architecture, reassuring me that I wanted to become an architect. When you look at my work you will see how I work mainly through sketches and models making them very stylistic to create work that stands out from others, while in the process still representing all elements of the project.

I have recently completed my Masters of Architecture, at Wentworth Institute of Technology, in Boston with distinction where I also obtained my Bachelors of Science in Architecture (With a concentration study of Urbanism). I find myself very interested in using mass to form voids. Voids create opportunities for green spaces to be created without them seeming additive. I want to help make the world a better place through architecture by designing total built environments with a style that responds to the site and the needs of the people. This is where my interests currently lie, but so early on in my career I am keeping my mind open to all types of architecture.

URBAN HOUSING For the Summer 2014 semester, I designed a series of units. The units form the mass rather than the units just being placed inside a mass. This helped create shared outdoor green spaces that are intertwined with the design making this such a successful urban design. My final section model was selected to be used as an example for future years.

I created a generic mass on the site while keeping in mind the existing openings and city conditions. I didn’t want the units to end up seeming squeezed into a one single mass so once I got a basic mass that seemed to fit the conditions. I used the individual units to form the mass making the area seem less like a building and become more sculptural with large voids cut into my design. This allows more light into each unit while creating public spaces for people to interact giving it more of a community type feel. The edge conditions follow the site and relate to the surrounding area while the center of my design can be more foreign. This allows the design to be unique and still fit into the urban context of the area. Number of Units: 12

PERFORMANCE SPACE For the Spring 2014 semester, I designed a performance center on the Boston Greenway containing a 800 seat theatre, 200 seat theatre, 4 rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, delivery area, café kitchen, office and research center on a single parcel while keeping the one existing building on the site. My concept was to continue the Boston Greenway with my design and to recreate a similar park like experience that was there but improved upon it by changing elevation with sloped plains while still addressing both South Station and the plaza appropriately.

AutoCAD Theatre Plan I started with a rectanglar block on the site and carved the theatre within it. The ceiling in the theatre is formed by the structure of the double concaved grass roof right above. The angle of the ceiling allows sound to carry up and away from the stage. Acoustic panels hang from the structure in order to fully shape the theatre creating a truly rich sound quality regardless of the seat. Performance Type: Multi-usage Seating: 800 People

CULINARY SCHOOL For the Spring 2015 semester, I designed a in the South End of Boston, MA. My concept the reaching of the 2 existing gardens on the solid vs. void space where the void could be
Culinary School was to express site thinking of an opportunity.
This lead me to create a design consisting of 2 buildings that are referential variations of each other. They lean facing each other gesturally connected through the void space. All aspects of my design were designed to reflect my concept. All the systems are connected to the backbone, which creates the main reaching gesture. Even the elevator is angled forward creating a feeling of the entire building mass pushing from behind you. As the elevator moves up it is getting closer to the other building making the two elevators reach towards each other. As you walk by the two buildings the amount of space between them disappears until they appear to be one building. Junior Year with Paul Fowler

AIR RIGHTS TOWER For the Fall 2015 semester, I worked in a team composed of five peers in order to create an Air Rights Development Master Plan proposal for Bay Village in Boston, MA. Our proposal focused on reconnecting the neighborhoods previously separated by the Massachusetts Turnpike by creating a diverse community that would be joined by numerous open spaces. Each of which at different scales to provide spaces for all types of activities. We selected different parcels to individually focus on and I selected the parcel (17) with the tower. Our teams master plan was selected to be used as an example for future years.

The Tower was the most important design, being 610 feet tall, it is a central landmark within our teams proposal and becomes an end point to Bostons Spine. I made the tower 610 feet tall because that is an average of the Boston Spine helping it fit into the Boston Skyline. When designing the tower I thought about what an urban design for a Contemporary City would want to be. With this in mind, my tower design is contemporary and meant to be a model for new ideas of living. This project was published in the Wentworth Architecture Review v/7.

HAMPTON HOUSE This is a side project that I worked on over the summer. I combined the design elements from some of my favorite modern houses into one; forming my dream house with the garage located underground. I focused on the circulation of the floor plans. I wanted the interior to feel very spacious, but at the same time not feel overwhelmingly open. This house was designed to be over looking the water from a vantage point, like most Hampton homes.

My pool design combines the ideas of many different types of pools in order to create a truly unique pool. My design has an upper level pool with an indented seating area so you have the feeling of being in the pool. The upper pool has an infinity edge creating the illusion that it continues into the ocean and vanish into the horizon. The upper pool over flows into the lower level pool. The lower level pool has a beach style entrance meaning there are no steps or ladders. Instead the sand covered surface angles down into the pool creating the feeling of walking into the ocean.

557 HIGHLAND TOWERS While I was interning at Wiedersum Associates Architects, I was given a set of the original hand drawn plans for 557 Highland Towers in FL. from 1957. I was tasked with recreating the plans in AutoCAD at 1/16=1’ to be used for renovation of each of the units. After I drafted typical floor plan, I separated the units in order to create a plan of each individual unit. Here are samples of what I drafted for the firm to use.

High School with Tim Needles INDEPENDENT
ARTWORK While in the Advanced Placement 2D Art Portfolio class during my senior year of High School in 2012, I decided to focus on a new style of art that I had taken interest in. I viewed the A.P. Art test as a way to further my interest in this style, pushing just how far I could take it. This spread as well as the next show examples of what I produced in doing so that were submitted for the exam. While creating each of the pieces done in this style, I tried to capture the essence of an object, person or animal without making any lines. Instead of using lines, I simplified photos down into only four shades of marker drawing one at a time. The idea for this was inspired by Shepard Fairey’s Barrack Obama “Hope” poster. His poster simplified his portrait down into a four colored piece of pop art. While looking at my pieces up close, you see a random sketchy look, but from far away they look like a black and white photograph. I have an entire series of this style, which will be on my website: www. stroveglia.com once it has been completed.
On the page to the right, you can see one of my pieces entitled, “Bug Eye Sculpture Drawing.” As the title suggests, it is a drawing of a real sculpture. The sculpture was one entitled, “Bug Eye” located on the Long House Museum grounds. My drawing of it managed to win first in drawing at the Long House Museum 2012 contest. It also was a chosen Finalist of the W.I.T. Student Art Show in The Casella Gallery in 2014. On the next spread, there is a drawing of a tiger and a lion. The lion piece entitled, “African Tiger” earned a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in 2012. I am very proud to say that it made it to the final round of the contest.
Bug Eye Sculpture Drawing Markers
The first sketch of this drawing was created while I was at the Longhouse Museum and later completed using markers to be entered in the Longhouse 2012 contest. I received 1st place in drawing.
