Editor’s Letter
Welcome to the inaugural issue of ”NYC PUPPIES”. I am so excited to be bringing you a magazine that can relate to all puppies but specifically to our dogs that live in the Big Apple. I’d like to tell you a little about myself. I was born and raised in South Florida but had made many visits to NYC because that is where my family originated from. I said to myself that one day I will return to the city and live. Growing up with three other siblings, I also had my Chelsea. Chelsea was a Maltese. She was the cutest and most lovable dog anyone could wish for. I lived in the suburbs so I was able to take her on long walks and even take her swimming in our pool all year round. Living with Chelsea was easy and wonderful and mostly stress free. Unfortunately at age 14 Chelsea passed on to doogie heaven but I have years of precious memories that I will never forget. My wish to move to the “Big” city finally came true. I now live in Manhattan with my Shorkie, “Chloe”. Chloe is a mixture of a Yorkie and a Shitzu ….and as you can see in the picture she is as cute as can be. As well behaved as my previous dog was, Chloe presented a whole new set of experiences. I came to NYC to attend LIM College, which is a fashion merchandising school. With my love of fashion and my love for puppies, I decided to start a magazine that combines both of my interests. Raising a puppy in a “vertical” city is quite challenging. Our furry friends are special and unique just because they are from the “city”! Along with being well dressed and accessorized, our pets need to live healthy and happy lives. I hope to bring you articles that will help you choose the right breed, training tips, health tips, and the latest innovations and much much more for our four legged friends. Of course without saying…..your dog will be the “best dressed “puppy in NYC with all of our fashion tips. I am excited to start this journey with you. I encourage you to send me pictures of your “precious” babies and any questions that concern you. I would love to hear from you about what you would like to see in future editions of “NYC Puppies”. Until next time, please enjoy our first issue and I wish you a happy summer for you and your puppy! 3 3

“Do” Pick a dog that fits the size of your home. If you are living in a small cramped NYC apartment then the smaller breeds are for you. If you are lucky enough to have more room and even outside space, a larger breed like the Labrador retriever or Golden retriever may be for you. Whichever size dog you choose, remember they must be taken outside to walk and play.
“Don’t”
Buy a shaggy dog if you are allergic you should think about getting a nonshedding dog. If you’re worried about loose hairs or if you or your kids have allergies. Dogs that are professionally groomed tend to shed less in your home. There really aren’t any hypoallergenic dogs since all dogs produce dander. Some good choices would be bichon frise, standard poodles or schnauzers.
“Do”
Pick a mild-mannered puppy especially when apartment living in NYC. With minimum space a sweet tempered, well behaved breed will be able adapt easier to a confined space. Be aware that some dogs are more excitable and not mix well with children. Some breeds to consider are pugs, boxers, brichon fries and standard poodles 10
10
; Lorem Ipsum Dolor
Spring 2016
“Don’t”
choose a herding dog if you are not into exercise or you have limited space. They need a lot of space, exercise and mental stimulation. They also can be very tricky with children as they can sometimes be a bit “nippy”
“Do”
Watch out for tiny dogs. As much as a tiny dog can be well suited for apartment life in NYC, small children and small dogs don’t always mix. Some breeds are very delicate such as Chihuahuas, Miniature pinschers and Pekingeses. Terriers are sturdier and calmer than most other small dogs. Toy breeds are great for families living in apartments.
“Do”
Choose a hardy, mixed breed. Believe it or not, purebread dogs are often more susceptible to genetic deseases; Mixed breeds are less likely to have these health problems and tend to be hardier. Sometimes it is difficult to predict the size, temperment and personality of a mixed breed, even if you know
11
11
; Lorem Ipsum Dolor
Spring 2016
“Don’t”
forget about “designer dogs”. These dogs are a combination of two different breeds. One of the most popular breeds to mix is the poodle because of their good temperament and nice coat. Some popular new breeds are the cockapoo (cocker spaniel and poodle), yorkipoo (yorki and poodle) and the labradoodle (Labrador retriever and poodle).
“Do”
Consider a career-change dog. If you don’t have the time or resources to train a puppy you cant get a dog that has been trained by a specific organization. Sometimes these dogs just “don’t work out” but they are loveable and well trained. Look into guide-dog schools for that special dog.

Q- How
should I train and discipline my small dog? –Allison R. New york, NY
A-
Ask your vet for a recommendation for a reputable trainer in your area. You might also ask a friend if they have been successful with a particular trainer. Start training early before your dog develops unacceptable habits. Effective training techniques learned early will make you and your puppy happy for life!
Q- How can I find safe ways to socialize my dog with other dogs? –Mike H. Brooklyn, NY
A- After your puppy has been properly vaccinated ask your
vet or local pet shop to help you locate nearby dog parks or play groups. It is important for your pooch to get exercise and spend time socializing with other canines. Make sure to keep your doggie with similar size friends so they don’t feel 14 overwhelmed. 14

Q- Do I need to protect my small dog from cold weather?- Stella D. Staten Island, NY
A- When the weather turns cold, ask your vet whether he or she recommends taking any special precautious to protect your small dog from the cold. Big dogs can retain more body heat. Each breed is different as more furry dogs may require fewer precautions. Limit your outdoor time and make sure your dog has more indoor exercise. A little doggy sweater or booties can help brave the elements. Be sure to wipe down and dry off your doggie and pay special attention to their paws.
Q- I have a small breed dog. Should I expect any health problems? –Jackie F. Astoria, NY
A- Certain dog breeds are more prone to suffer specific
physical ailments than others. Ask your vet if you could take any preventive measures that you can take early on. Make sure you understand which symptoms to look for. Knee problems can occur in breeds such as a Bichon Frise, a toy Poodle, a Lhasa Apso and a Pomeranian. If you identify the problems and act quickly you can help your puppy live a longer and healthier life. Continued‌ 15

Q- When should my dog start getting routine blood work done? –Carlos T. Bronx, NY
A- Some vets like to do baseline blood work to establish
and individual dogs basic physiology. This can screen for certain congenital diseases. As the dog gets older follow up with additional blood work.

Where Should We Get Our New Puppy?
There are some questions we should ask ourselves before buying a puppy. Why do I want a puppy?, Can I afford one?, am I prepared to take care of a puppy? And where can I get one? Of course you must avoid “the puppy mill”, at all cost. Here are some suggestions on where to find your “Perfect NYC Puppy”
Animal Shelter Adopting from an animal shelter is a great thing to do. It’s much cheaper than buying from a breeder and you can save a life! Workers at the shelter will ask you a lot of questions so they can match you up with a compatible breed. NYC alone gets over 35,000 homeless pets that need a home. The mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals has over 150 shelters and rescue groups throughout the city for the adoption of pets. Continued…

Breed Rescue Group If you want a particular breed and to do a good deed and save some money, try a breed-rescue group. These groups collect abandoned dogs from vets, kennels, owners and local shelters. A good place to start is Animal Haven at (212)274-8511
Breeder If you want a purebred or even a “designer” dog and money is no problem a breeder may be the way to go. The American Kennel Club’s website at akc.org is a good place to start. If you can, arrange to visit and meet the breeder, the dog’s parents and the puppies. You may gave to wait for a liter to be born and if it is a purebred be sure to get AKC registration papers.

Pet Shop Be careful! Pet shops cater to impulsive buyers. They sometimes get their dogs from mass breeding facilities otherwise known as a puppy mill, where dogs may be housed in poor conditions. Some of these dogs are more likely to have health issues.
The Internet/Classifieds The Internet can be a good way to find a breeder buy can be risky. If the breeder is not local it is not easy for one to see their facilities. Some will ship you puppies but

Exploring NYC with your Pup
Most people in NYC, especially in Manhattan don’t own a car. So what’s the best way to get around the city with your dog? Technically, any dog is allowed on public transportation in the city as long as it is enclosed in a carrier and carried in such away it will not annoy other passengers. If your puppy is small enough to fit in a carrier that you can hold on your lap….that’s perfect! Taxis are also likely to pick you up if your dog is in a carrier. When your puppy grows, things can get a bit more challenging… You must carry your larger dog in a carrier down to the subway platform to board the train.

Starting in August 2013 Direct TV will be starting a 24hour channel for dogs called DOGTV. The founder of DOGTV, Ron Levi says “We have created programs where every frame, second and sound have been tailored to fir the way dogs see and the hear world”. DOGTV is focusing their station to help dogs that suffer from separation anxiety when their owners are away. Three to six minute long segments will provide relaxing, stimulating and behavior improving content. Relaxing music has been specifically written and recorded for dogs. Levi said, “Everything we included in our content is something research tells us dogs like to see, like other dogs and moving/objects”. The channel will become available for Direct TV subscribers on August 1st for $4.99 per month. The station has already been tested in San Diego and pet owners have given it rave reviews. They say their dogs 41 became really relaxed after watching a segment. 41

DOGTV will not have commercials and humans will notice that some images on the screen may be slightly blurred. The content is not for human eyes. It will be clear for dogs but not necessarily people. The colors green and red have been enhanced for more vibrancy because most dogs have green and red color blindness. Also included will be sounds that would be calming for dogs but not necessarily people. The creators of DOGTV are very excited about their new endeavor. The director of pet issues at the Humane society of the United States told ABC News “We are hoping the science behind the channel is accurate and that the developers will follow up to see how to improve dogs’ quality of life.
