Two Hearts 2 Hearts marks the return of Kylie to the international music scene, after winning her battle against breast cancer. Released on November 9th, 2007, this song is the first single from the album ÂŤ X Âť. Written and composed by Kish Mauve, a British electro-pop duo with Jim Eliot and Mima Stilwell, 2 Hearts is definitively a pop song but it gives a certain revival in the sound and career of the Australian singer.

MUSIC VIDEO
First extract from Kylie’s tenth album, « 2 Hearts » is a pop-rock song that surprised fans and marked her comeback after her breast cancer. This is a cover of British electro-pop band Kish Mauve, composed of Mima Stilwell and Jim Eliot, who also produced the final version of the song for Kylie. Originally released on November 9th, 2007 in Ireland and Germany, the song arrived on November 10th in Australia and on the 12th in England and France.
The music video was directed by Dawn Shadforth, and shot in Shepperton Studios, in London. Kylie appears in two different scenes: one where she wears a black latex catsuit, with intense red lipstick and curly hair, and where she plays with a band. In the other scene, we se her wearing a black dress and Louboutin stilettos.
Recorded in London, « 2 Hearts » was a real favorite of Kylie, who said she « loved the song » as soon as she heard it. She also enjoyed working with this team, and collaborated with them for another song, « Lose Control », which is one of those titles that didn’t make it on the album (but we all have heard it anyway). Musically, we find a sound definitely more rock than what the Australian singer had done before, with electric guitars, guitars, drums, keyboards and pianos. The song is also easily memorized by the «Whooo» we can hear in the chorus.
CRITICS Most of the medias, like « The Sun » found this song very successful (Victoria Newton described the song as «a surefire number one», being even « on a par with Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », some other journalists shared way more negative view, like Sarah Walters of the Manchester Evening News who thinks that « it takes more than some whooo to make a single memorable ».
The video opens with Kylie singing into a skullshaped microphone, encrusted with diamonds. She can also be on a piano, before ending the music with multicolored confetti falling on her and her band. We can find this inspiration in the romantic comedy where Marilyn Monroe appears: « Some like it hot ». Kylie found the idea for this music video in a London nightclub, the BoomBox, where she had performed as a DJette at Fashion Week in the UK capital. The outfits worn by the singer and her musicians were designed by Gareth Pugh and Christopher Kane. The first broadcast of the music video took place on October 10th, 2007 on GMTV, a British television. The song has also been used in commercials, and also in the ABC series called Cougar Town, with Courteney Cox.
CHARTS « 2 Hearts » ended up very well in the charts, reaching first place in Australia, Spain and Ukraine. The song was 2nd in Italy, 3rd in Sweden, 4th in England and Scotland, 6th in Norway or 7th in Slovakia. You can check the ranking of the song in others countries just below.
Regarding the fans, the opinions were rather divided, some judging the song too experimental, while others appreciated the direction taken by Kylie to reinvent herself in a musical style never experienced before. Despite the fact that « 2 Hearts » was not released in the United States, the well-know Rolling Stone magazine ranked this song 94th in its top 100 of the best music of 2007. It also ranked 40th in the 2007 Top 50 songs in Stylus Magazine, and was voted in 2010 as Kylie Minogue’s best single to date. 8 www.kylie-world.com

FORMATS « 2 Hearts » was released in different formats around the world. While most territories received both the CD version and a digital version, the song was also released as a limited edition picture disc in England. Fans who took part in the premiere of « White Diamond » in New Zealand also received a promotional version of the single. In England, the song was officially sent to radios on October 10th, 2007, after it had leaked on the internet a day before. Two b-sides are also available according to the formats with « 2 Hearts » : « I Don’t Know What It Is » and « King Or Queen », as well as differents remixes. 2

I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY We’ve decided to make a focus on all of Kylie’s singles each month (in order of their release) since the last edition of Kylie Times. Last month, focus was on Locomotion so now it’s I Should Be So Lucky’s turn! We’re sure you all know the rumour about how this song saw the day (especially if you read Kylie Times on a regular basis), but in case you don’t, you’ll find it out in the following pages. We also tell you all about the charts, awards, critics, releases and video(s) - because, yes there are 2 videos ... and also how this song helped Kylie in 1996.
SHE SHOULD BE SO LUCKY ! In October 1987 Kylie flew to the UK with Terry Blamey to meet Stock Aitken Waterman, but it turns out they had totally forgotten about Kylie’s trip to work with them. When she arrived at reception and was announced to Mike Stock, he immediately called Pete Waterman asking if he’d heard of this « small Antipodean » girl Kylie Minogue. He simply replied, « oh yes I forgot she was in town » and Mike said « hmm no she’s in reception ». Pete Waterman apologized for not telling him about her and told him to forget about the project, but Mike replied he couldn’t because she was expecting to do something with them. Pete then replied « She should be So Lucky! ». Mike said, « That’ll do. I Should Be So Lucky. Can we write some lyrics? » And he did, with Matt Aitken, in 30 minutes, based on the only bits of story they had heard about her and also thinking that since she was a talented, successful Australian soap star there was probably something else wrong with her, maybe she was unlucky in love? After recording the track (which took about 30 minutes), Mike was sure they’d never see Kylie again as SAW weren’t convinced she’d be a star. « She was a good singer, had a quick ear and could pick up songs easily, » he said, « but that was about all… We just bashed the song out and sent her back on her way. » They also didn’t take her seriously due to the time constraints they were under given her obligations to the TV show Neighbours. Later, he said « She would literally come for an hour when she was in London and heading back as soon as she finished ». He also admitted, « to be honest, we were rather brusque and off-hand with her that first time ». They didn’t even listen to the track they had recorded for weeks, even though Mushroom was putting pressure on them. Pete Waterman later said :
« Then I can remember being at a
Christmas party and hearing this record that was good, I went over to ask the DJ who it was, and it turned out to be Kylie. We completely underestimated her popularity » The only issue was that no record company was ready to take Kylie on board so Pete used his own label, PWL, to release the song.
1987 (and in Australia on 1st February 1988). Pete Waterman later recalled that when the record was first aired on London’s Capital Radio, the switchboard nearly exploded with fans desperate to know when they could buy it! It’s important to know that at the time, UK was behind Australia with what had been seen and what hadn’t on Neighbours by about 18 months (Charlene arrived on UK screens in September 1987), which was great for Kylie’s career in the UK and which explains the single’s immediate success. Indeed, she was able to make the most of the fact that her character was seen on UK screens, giving the impression that she was able to juggle both a music and an acting career.
« I Should be So Lucky » was Kylie’s first UK number one single and became the first gold single of that year. In February 1988, the single was simultaneously number one in the UK and Australia, making Kylie the first ever artist to accomplish such an achievement! It stayed at number one in the UK for 6 weeks, and spent 17 weeks in total on the UK charts! It also hit pole position in Germany, Ireland and Switzerland, and became a top-five hit in Austria, France and Norway.

In addition, it made it in the US Billboard Hot 100 top 30 and the US Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play.
AWARDS AND CERTIFICATIONS • Highest Selling Single award at the 3rd annual ARIA Awards in 1988
• Certified platinum in Australia • Certified gold in the UK and Germany • Certified silver in France.
CRITICS • Nick Levine from Digital Spy only gave the song 3 stars out of 5, but strangely enough called it a « standout track ». • Most critics considered the song as « cliché ». • Mark Edwards from Stylus Magazine later stated that the early songs like « I Should Be So Lucky » are unlistenable, horribly naff and squeaky songs. • The single is one of Kylie’s most infamous songs. Basically, critics would either enter it on their best track or worst track lists. Some dismissed the lyrical content of the song, while others would sing « I should be so Yucky ».

It was directed by Chris Langman, filmed in November 1987 at Channel 7 Studios in Melbourne and was aired in the UK in January 1988.
The alternative video was produced for live TV promotion, exclusively for Top of the Pops.
The video shows a cute, girly-looking Kylie with curly hair most of the time. She’s wearing a black, highwaist black jersey skirt with a tank top of the brand Bik Bok with braces at the back, or a white cotton muslim dress with over-sized pockets, or a simple pink skirt and pale green top. It presents the same « girl next-door » image of Kylie as we see in Neighbours.
To finish, she’s walking, then dancing and singing in a park with her heels on (we all go to walk in the park in heels, right?). I watched the video a few times, and honestly, sometimes, Kylie’s face seems to express « What the hell am I doing here ? » Have a look and let me know if you get the same feeling, it’s rather strange, and I feel uncomfortable for her just watching it.
At times, she’s dressed in a black cocktail dress, hair slightly straightened while she’s dancing in front of a colourful chalk board background, where we can read « I luv you » and/or see a heart with an arrow through it and/or also see a magician’s hat with balloons coming out of it... (bit strange, right?)
In it, we see a cheerful Kylie, signing autographs at the beginning, then riding through the streets of Sydney, in an open-top silver Mercedes, wind in her hair while she is singing and smiling to camera, and the camera often stops to show passers-by waving at us. She’s wearing a black skirt and a long sleeve t-shirt with 3 huge gold buttons and stripes with what seems to be an eagle which reminds me of an army-type of blazon on it (the outfit is a bit strange but very 80’s!) and silver high heel shoes that we only get to see at the end.
She spends the whole time flouncing through an empty flat, touching everything she comes across, filing her nails, picking up clothes, looking longingly at a picture of a guy (I’ve always wondered who that was, do you know?), and repeatedly falling backwards onto a big comfortable bed. Anyway, this video is really not one to remember to And of course, there is THE iconic bubble bath scene be honest. • Kylie donated the white cotton muslim dress from the video to the Art’s Centre’s Performing Arts Collection in Melbourne, for « Kylie - The Exhibition ». It was designed by Jenny Bannister (Australia).

POETRY OLYMPICS – 1996 The day Kylie accepted to move on… On 7th July 1996, Kylie performed at the event called « A Hip Mass: The Superjam - First International Poetry Day », at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This 9-hour event was devoted to poetry, verse and performance, and featured poets and songwriters. That day was to change Kylie’s life forever. According to her, it is possibly the most cathartic moment she can remember.
She walked on the stage alone, casually dressed in tracksuit with no make-up (nor bra), and identified by a sticker with her name in capitals, denuded of her usual glitter and feathers, and recited the lyrics without any musical accompaniment… and it turns out the crowd loved her! It was as if the Second Coming had happened there and then.

How am I supposed to follow that? » Nick just said God had done an « Okay job » then he pushed her gently and she strode bravely out to stage.

What Kylie said • « It was like I’d climbed Mount Everest or jumped out of a plane. Nick was saying to me « It’ll be brilliant, it’ll confront all of your past, all in one fell swoop ».

It’s been a few weeks since the Australian referendum regarding marriage equality was launched, Australians have to vote, on a consultative basis only, via post mail, to say whether they are for or against marriage equality for all. The result should be known today (November 15th), and recent polls opted for a
majority of favorable opinions. It remains to be seen whether the government will subsequently take the necessary measures to adopt this law, as France did a few years ago. A large campaign was launched by Spotify on bus shelters in Australia and New Zealand, promoting the «yes» vote. A poster with Kylie who created her playlist with the online music platform has been displayed throughout the two countries. Meanwhile, Kylie has recalled her support via the «Pride» playlist, posted on Spotify.

NEWS Kylie Wins the « Legend » Award at Attitude Awards 2017 On October 12th, Kylie attended the Attitude Awards 2017, a ceremony organized by the English gay magazine «Attitude» at the Roundhouse in London. The Australian singer won the award of «Legend» (in all modesty), which was given to her for all her help and support to the LGBT community, which as we all know follows and has always supported Kylie since her beginnings. With «Spinning Around» playing in the background, she walked up the stage to receive her award, which was handed to her by her friend, member od Scissor Sisters, Jake Shears. She was very pleased to receive this award and looks forward to creating new memories with the LGBT community very soon. The ceremony, hosted by Tom Daley, featured many guests, including Matt Lucas, Sam Smith, Chris Robshaw, Beverly Knight, Pixie Lott and Amanda Holden. Prince Harry was also there, to pick up an award posthumously or his mum, Princess Diana whose commitment to destigmatize AIDS patients was honored.
A song with Dannii Minogue soon ? Dannii Minogue will be back in stores soon! Kylie’s little sister, who is constantly multiplying projects in Australia, has worked on new songs and the first single, Galaxy, is now out! The song was written by Sia, who had also collaborated with Kylie on Kiss Me Once. Dannii, who will open Take That’s band show in Australia, also talked about music with her sister. The latest song remains «100 Degrees», which satisfied the two sisters’ fans especially at the first Kylie Christmas show, where the two singers played the song live (and we really screamed !): « It is always random with us. We never think «okay, it is time to do something else again», it just happens organically. We have fun when we do it, so we don’t feel pressure to do it. There will be something soon ». « Sun In A London Night » by Dolce & Gabbana at Harrods « Sun In A London Night ». This is the sum up of a surprise show by Dolce & Gabbana that only lasted one night in London’s famous Harrods store. The two designers traveled to London to inaugurate their Sicilian Christmas market in the big British brand. To present their capsule collection, the duo did not hesitate to invest the fresh food corner, to create a catwalk in the corridors, between vegetables and fresh fish. And the fresh fish, let’s talk about it, because that is where we found our beautiful Australian, in the first row certainly, but with the fish counter just behind her. However, that helped us to find Bruce The Lobster, which we had not seen since the last tour, and who made a small photobomb behind Kylie, how cool. If you live in London, or if you are traveling to the British capital, do not hesitate to visit Harrods to see the windows enchanted by the magic of Christmas, and the chic style of Dolce & Gabbana. Can we listen to Kylie’s new album ? Kylie is still in the studio and continues to record her new album, while also doing multiple appearances, whether in events or private concerts. An interview recently appeared in the British press, giving us a little more details about the new album, and especially, the release of the first single, scheduled for January (which has now been shifted to February).
INTERVIEW WITH OK MAGAZINE Kylie, what can we expect from your upcoming album ?
How did you feel when opening up about your emotions in the studio ?
I’m very excited. I’ve spent all year working on it. We’re looking towards a January single. I can’t tell you what it’s called, but I can tell you that I went to Nashville for two weeks - and that became the album. I did a lot of work on the album before that. Nashville had a profound effect on me.
It was cathartic, yeah, it was good. When you’re in the studio with whoever, it’s a slightly weird concept to be spending seven, eight, nine hours in a room with people you sometimes don’t know. But I think if you’re working with good people, that’s the most perfect place to deal with stuff.
Does it have a country feel to it ?
Do you sometimes have to bare your soul as well to get the best material ?
I’m not quite going to be in a Stetson but the songs are very storytelling and story based. It was so great Yeah, you do have to say « This could be embarrasto do things a little bit differently to the way I normal- sing but let’s do it anyway ». You’ve kind of got me at ly do them. the moment where I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. On the album, thoughts are turning to the It’s rumoured to be a ‘heartbreak’ album. Do you look but I’m not over the finish line yet. think that’s true ? Are you going to tour next year ? There’s a little bit of that, I would say. Mostly I try to reflect where I am. Definitely in the last year of There will be shows next year for sure. I can’t wait to course there’s been some of that, but we bounce get out and perform again. back. Most of it is really super positive and inspiring, a note to self as much as anything else. So yeah, I’m feeling great right now.

On our side, we only know that Kylie worked with Sascha Lilic (you can see the pictures on the left). He is a creative director and stylist, who has worked many times with the singer before, especially on the photos of the German GQ where she was photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth. He also worked on the 2015 calendar, on the photos of the cover of the album Kiss Me Once. He also worked with other artists such as Beth Ditto or Lana Del Rey and even with models. Sascha Lilic said it was a secret project, and has also added in the hashtags of the picture ÂŤ soundtrack of the week Âť... This suggests that something related to the album was filmed... THE 2018 CALENDAR IS NOW AVAILABLE ! After the little drama last month on the fact that Kylie may have photoshopped her bum for her new calendar (something that was denied by the singer herself on her Instagram account), the famous must-have item for any good self-respecting collector is finally out. And so we checked ourselves if there were any weird details and errors inside, to make sure the cover was the only drama, and it was ! So phew! Her make-up and hair were done by Christian Vermaak, she was dressed by Ali Dariotis and photos were done by Steve Shaw, and this new calendar was shot in Los Angeles at Chateau Marmont. If you don’t know this place, it is a famous hotel in the city, built in 1929, which has hosted throughout its history many cinema and celebrities, whether they were there to stay, or just to repeat their lyrics (or to do some photoshoots like Kylie). Classified historical monument, this hotel has a special soul. André Balazs (who has already been seen alongside our Australian, especially in London) bought the hotel in 1990 and renovated it by trying to give it the patina of its beginnings while retaining much of the spirit of place (inspired by old photos, he reinstalls in the lobby of the antique furniture), the identity of the hotel being linked to a spirit of « junk », far from the generally clean style of palaces. However, the owner explains that « apart from the rooms and the bathrooms, which are authentic, there is not a square centimeter of the original hotel », André Balazs continues to look for furniture in around
the world to set up the hotel, he recently installed retro-styled kitchens instead of the 1970’s plastic fixtures and a 1930s-style elevator that is actually new, made by former Hollywood decorators who are used to designing things inspired by the past. This makes Vanity Fair say that Chateau Marmont is «a movie set». This photographer has already worked with the singer, for example on the campaign for the lingerie brand Sloggi, in 2014. He also photographed the two sisters Kylie and Dannii in 1999, capturing their complicity. Steve Shaw also founded Treats magazine! that mixes sensual images, while having a very luxurious and chic appearance.
