We are so happy to be back with a new edition of The Kylie Times! The slight difference this month’s is that I’m doing the edito for the very first time (Thanks Laeti for making me feel like a guest star). Contrary to Laeti and En, you won’t see me travelling the globe to go to Kylie concerts (although I’d really love to) because I can’t travel that much, but if you read the magazine every month, you must have already seen my name here and there. This month is more or less all about the European leg of the Golden Tour, with a full focus written by Laeti. You’ll be able to travel on a time machine with my two focuses: One about the single « Step Back In Time » and one about Michael Hutchence, you’ll be able to read the Stellar interview and catch-up with all the latest news, live appearances and other interviews. And of course, we talk about the Kylie Summer 2019, we did some new Kylie reactions and have been keeping up with social media to tell you everything. Thanks to all of you who gave us your feedback on the magazine via our poll and here’s to many more editions of The Kylie Times’ Lovers! Enjoy Lovers. Isa

THROwback CALENDAR NOVEMBer 1988 - 2018

Let’s have a look back at the most important events in Kylie’s career through the years and that took place in november.

ast single from the mythical album « Fever », « Come Into My World », released on November 2nd, 2002. Among the producers and writers, there is a well known team: Rob Davis and Cathy Dennis. Even though most of the fans appreciate this track, we must note that we almost didn’t get to know about its existence because it was added on the album at the last minute. « Come Into My World », less dance and a little more disco had a fairly limited success in the charts, ranking at the eighth position in England and fourth one in Australia (which is not so bad) but had trouble to get into the top 10 in most of the European countries. The most important thing to remember is that this track gave Kylie her only Grammy Award in 2004 for the « Best Dance Track » - whoop whoop! The cover of the single was photographed by Nick Knight, who took the one of « Love At First Sight ». He also made the promotional shoot for the « Love Kylie » lingerie collection. The music video has been directed by Michel Gondry and we find duplicated versions of our Kylie (the more there is here, the better it is!). It was shot near Paris, in Boulogne-Billancourt (in the city where Kylie sang for the « Golden Tour » this month). The artistic idea of this video was hailed by critics. Unfortunately, the track is not really sung on tour, its last performance going back to « For Me, For You Tour ».

HAT A TRACK ! Especially with the new version on the tour, so sexy... « Slow » is the first single of « Body Language » and was written by Kylie, Dan Carey, Emiliana Torrini and produced by Carey, Torrini and Sunnyroads. The song is quite minimalist in terms of audio production but still contains enough ‘clubs’ elements. The story is quite explicit and talks about meeting someone in a club and dancing with the person, gently and sensually. The track was very popular with the audience and ranked first in many countries such as Australia, Denmark, Spain, England, or at the top of the billboard US Dance Club song and been certified platinum in her native country. « Slow » was also nominated for the Grammy Awards in the « Best Dance Track » category (but it’s the song of Britney Spears - « Toxic » who won the award). The music video, quite mythical, was shot in Barcelona at the Olympic swimming pool of Montjuïc and directed by Baillie Walsh. It was choreographer Michael Rooney who took the staging of the video, where we see Kylie dancing and lying on the floor. If you are traveling to Barcelona or if you are going to see her there next July, do not forget to have a walk to see the pool!

inth tour of Kylie Minogue and probably one of the most intense in terms of emotions: the « Showgirl Homecoming Tour ». After defeating her breast cancer, the singer returned to the stage to continue her « Showgirl: The Greatest Hits Tour » in a new version, with a new setlist and new costumes on November 11th, 2006 at the Sydney Entertainment Center. The concert was totally redesigned so Kylie had time to recover from her disease and ensure that the medical conditions were respected. An interval during the show was set up so that she could have a little break before starting the second part of it. The singer played twenty dates in Australia and fourteen in Europe, for a total of 34 concerts that were almost all sold out. Victim of a bad flu in Manchester, Kylie left the stage after an hour of performance on January 13th, before rescheduling three more dates at the end of the month to not disappoint anyone.

hat a comeback... « 2 Hearts » marks the beginning of a new era for Kylie, a few years after her cancer, with a track that took her to a much more pop-rock side, never really exploited in her previous songs. This track was produced and written by Jim Eliot and Mima Stilwell, two artists who are making the electro-pop duo Kish Mauve. They both decided to give this song to her and Kylie later stated that as soon as she heard the track she loved it, as she did with the work session she had with Kish Mauve (who also product « Lose Control », an unreleased track of this period). «2 Hearts », which was the first single of « X » seduced the audience and was very well ranked in the charts: first in Australia (where it is certified gold) and Spain, second in Italy, third in Sweden and fourth in England. The video was directed by Dawn Shadforth and filmed at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, near London, England. We see the singer in two different outfits: a black latex suit with curly blond hair and red lipstick and another where she is with her band in a black dress and a more mysterious environment. It can actually remind Marilyn Monroe in « Some Like It Hot ». The track was sung during three tours: « KylieX2008 », « For You, For Me Tour » and « Aphrodite Tour » (only in Japan). It is still present in the requests of fans, and Kylie always sings it in Paris for one of her friends!

et’s go back now to the third studio album « Rhythm Of Love », released on November 12th, 1990. Kylie was still working with Stock Aitken Waterman but also Keith Cohen, Stephen Bray or Michael Jay and for the first time, we could hear tracks that she had co-written. At that time, the singer was with Michael Hutchence, who influenced her a lot and made her take a new turn in her career and we can hear it in the themes of this album that talk about adulthood, to have fun, bad boys or relationships. Four singles are from this opus: the famous « Better The Devil You Know », « Step Back In Time », « What Do I Have To Do » and « Shocked ». The album only moderately ranked in the charts, ninth in England (certified gold record), tenth in Australia (platinum) and far away in the other charts. The singer went on tour to support « Rhythm Of Love » in February 1991 with 19 shows.

A KYLIE CHRISTMAS

novembER 13TH, 2015

think we are getting into the correct mood, right? « Kylie Christmas », the thirteenth studio album of Kylie was released on November 13th, 2015 (yes yes 3 years already - we are getting old) and is composed of many covers of Christmas tracks, but also original songs as « 100 Degrees », a duet of the two sisters Minogue. As bizarre as it may sound, the singer recorded the album in the summer (only option if we wanted to get it on time for Christmas) and decided to decorate the recording studios (Angel Recording Studios and Sarm Music Village) to get in the mood. Knowing what she wanted, Kylie was the exclusive producer of this album and surrounded herself with friends such as Steve Anderson, Ash Howes, Richard Stannard or Stargate to produce the songs. She co-wrote « White December » and « Christmas Isn’t Christmas Til You Get Here » while « Every Day’s Like Christmas » was written by Chris Martin of Coldplay. Three singles have been exploited: « Only You », duet with James Corden, « 100 Degrees » and « Every Day’s Like Christmas ». The opus was quite well received even though it did not reach the top of the charts, ranking seventh in England and Australia (its best score). Kylie promoted it by offering a show at the Royal Albert Hall in London in mid-December, and we all remember it (ahahah what a joy it was to get tickets, it was a real struggle...).

W

e will leave the atmosphere of Christmas a few minutes (but we will come back to it soon) to speak about the second single from the album « Kylie Minogue », « Put Yourself In My Place ». Written, produced and arranged by Jimmy Harry, the track was recorded in New York at Whorga Musica Studios, Axis Studios and Power Station Studios by Doug Deangelis, sound engineer for the full album. The track is a ballad that talks about the end of a relationship and the fact that we have to move forward... Unfortunately this did not convince the public, « Put Yourself In My Place » ranking at its best eleventh in the charts in Australia and England. And if the music video reminds you of something, it’s probably because it’s based on the 1968 film « Barbarella » in which Jane Fonda, an idol of Kylie, plays. The video was directed by Kier McFarlane and filmed in two days: the singer was strapped with harnesses and wires and later said it was one of the most painful shootings she had to do. Note that Kylie sang this track for the last time that same year, during the « Kylie Presents Golden » last March. 6 www.kylie-world.com

e now move on to my favorite Kylie’s album (yes it’s totally personal!): « Body Language ». The first release date of this album was November 10th, 2003 in Japan, Australia and Germany had it on November 14th, France and the United Kingdom on November 17th and the United States on February 10th the following year. Kylie kept on going in the vibe of « Fever » and asked the help of many producers including Cathy Dennis, Richard Stannard or Julian Gallagher. Very pop-dance, « Body Language » contains touches of R&B and hip-hop and talks about the themes of pleasure, flirtation and sex. At this time, Kylie was very inspired by Brigitte Bardot - with her haircut and her poses in many photoshoots, made in the south of France. Three singles are extracted from this opus: « Slow », « Red Blooded Woman » and « Chocolate », which were all very well received by the public. Regarding the album, it ranked well in the charts, first in Australia (and certified platinum double), sixth in England (platinum) and eighth in Switzerland. And to my biggest disappointment (although I would have been too young to go to the concert), Kylie did not tour after this album : there was only a concert at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on November 15th, 2003. Called « Money Can’t Buy », the show was only for fans with invitations and was created and directed by Kylie and William Baker for the creative side, Steve Anderson for the musical arrangements and Michael Rooney for the choreography.

can really be considered as the album of the come back. While she was resting in Melbourne after defeating her cancer, Kylie began writing the lyrics of her new album, based on her story. Some lyrics were used for the tracks « No More Rain » and « Cosmic ». According to some rumors, the name of the album was supposed to be « Magnetic Electric », but when the fans on the forums talked about their thoughts about its release, it was « the album X » that came out and it is finally this name which was kept, in reference to her tenth studio album. The first studio session began with Jake Shears and Babydaddy from Scissor Sisters (we think in particular of the « White Diamond » song) but also Biffco, Karen Poole, Calvin Harris on some productions, Freemasons, Kish Mauve and many others. Moreover, it is in August 2007 that many tracks took shape in Ibiza, like « Wow », « Carried Away », « Magnetic Electric » or « Do It Again », following a request of the singer to go to record on the mythical island. Five singles were released from « X » : « 2 Hearts », « Wow », « In My Arms », « All I See » and « The One ». The album was rather well received and ranked first in Australia and fourth in England (platinum record in both countries). Following this album, we obviously think of the « X Tour » with more than 80 dates in total, including 58 in Europe, 6 in South America, 7 in Asia, 8 in Oceania and one in Africa.

DID IT AGAIN

N

novembeR 24TH, 1997

ow let’s talk about « Did It Again » from Kylie’s album « Impossible Princess » and released as a second single. The track was written by Kylie with the help of Steve Anderson and Dave Seaman and was produced by the singer in collaboration with Brothers In Rhythm. This is a slightly more pop rock song that is about her self-awareness and self-hatred. Critics have been quite positive from the press but the song didn’t manage to be successful in the charts ranking 9th in Scotland, 14th in the UK and 15th in Australia. However, we all remember the music video that was made by Petro Romanhi in London and filmed in two days. William Baker took care of the singer’s style by creating the costumes for each character: Sex Kylie, Cute Kylie, Indie Kylie and Dance Kylie. The different « Kylie » represent her evolution through the years and during the video, the characters are fighting each other and in the end, it is Indie Kylie who wins. The music video received the award for the best Australian video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. Note that Kylie has barely sung this track on stage.

L

et’s go back into the Christmas season with the reissue of Kylie’s first album, this time entitled « Snow Queen Edition » and released a year after its first release. For the occasion, there is a new picture for the cover, as well as six new songs: « Stay Another Day » by East 17, « Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good) » by Rozalla, « I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday » by Wizzard, Coldplay’s « Christmas Lights » or Paul McCartney’s « Wonderful Christmastime ». And it is the track « At Christmas » which was chosen as the first single to promote the reissue of the opus. Several TV shows appearances were made including Quotidien in France (Kylie was also promoting the show « Saturday Night Fever » at that time) and Stasera Casa Mika where she sang « At Christmas » and « Wonderful Christmastime » in addition to « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head ». « Everybody’s Free To Feel Good » was used for Boots’ Christmas campaign on all TV channels. Two full concerts at the Royal Albert Hall were also held to celebrate Christmas a few days ahead together!

es, one of my favorite songs! « Higher » is basically a Taio Cruz track taken from his fifth studio album and written and produced by the artist and Sandy Vee. At the beginning, the track was written FOR Kylie and was supposed to be on her album « Aphrodite », but the singer refused it... So Taio Cruz got it back before Kylie came back for the featuring. « Higher » has worked very well internationally (I confirm - even the French radios were playing the tune!), and ranked 1st in Luxembourg and in the Billboard Top Dance, second in Norway and Poland or third in Austria. Note that the success was really concentrated in Europe because the track reached only the 25th place in Australia. A music video with the two artists was filmed and directed by Alex Herron. Since another version exists in the United States with McCoy, Taio Cruz decided to do two music videos, both released on November 19th. And, a rare thing about Kylie’s duets, « Higher » was sung only once at the Starfloor in Paris, on October 30th, 2010.

HIGHER

novembeR 26TH, 2010

et’s move on to a well-known classic, especially for fans who have followed Kylie from the beginning: « Especially For You ». The song was written by the team at the time, in other words Stock Aitken Waterman, and is a duet with Kylie’s companion in life and in « Neighbors »: Jason Donovan. At the time, the records of both artists were selling very well and the audience wanted to see both singers and actors together. SAW hurried to write the song before Christmas to make it a hit (and sell more records) and Kylie and Jason recorded the track in Australia, but each one its part. If you want to read the full story of the song, check out the Kylie Times of February 2018, where Isa gives you all the details about it ! The song ranked very well, first in England and Ireland, second in Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland or third in France and is certified gold in England with more than one million of sales! Kylie and Jason have each performed this track in their respective concerts (including the « Golden Tour » this year for our Australian) and the last « performance » of the song both together was in Hyde Park with a surprise appearance of Jason after coming with his bike ! Well Kylie really kept her microphone for herself and he did not sing much but it was great to see the two artists together on stage.

nd we end this calendar with a little more of Christmas spirit and Kylie’s first EP dedicated to the end of the year celebrations: « A Kylie Christmas ». This EP consists of two tracks: « Let It Snow » and « Santa Baby » and it was already included as a b-side of the single « Please Stay ». A music video was shot for « Let It Snow » and was released on December 10th, 2010. This EP did not rank very well in the charts, ending up 188th in England. « Santa Baby » reached the 38th position. Both songs were sung in New York the same day as the release of the EP at the Rockefeller Center during the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

KYLIE MINOGUE STEP BACK IN TIME Kylie had been working on new tracks for her new album « Rhythm Of Love » since March 1990. After the release of « Better The Devil You Know » in April 1990, fans had to wait nearly 6 months before Kylie’s next single « Step Back In Time » was released. This was then the longest gap between Kylie releases in the UK, so some people thought that times had been quiet for her. The truth is that she had actually been working really hard. She had even spent the months of August and September 1990 in the US to work with new producers, and that’s where the promo video for this new single was filmed. If you want to know more then put your feet up Lovers, here is everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the super funky « Step Back In Time ».

Focus • Step Back In Time « Step Back In Time » was (once again) written, Kylie herself mentioned in an interview that even arranged and produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. though she hadn’t been in England for a while, she The song was recorded in PWL’s London studios in thought this single was really right for the market. July 1990 (at the same time as three other songs from that era, including « What Do I Have To Do »), The positive feedback « Step Back In Time » rebut was only released on October 22nd, 1990. ceived at initial playback sessions led Pete Waterman to pass it on to Phil Harding and Ian Curnow, asking Talking about « What Do I Have To Do », originally them to provide a more satisfying final mix that comit was planned to be Kylie’s next single after « Better bined the seventies elements with a current nineties The Devil You Know », but PWL decided to release sound. The song was refined over several studio ses« Step Back In Time » instead. sions, and the result was exactly what was requested. There were two different reasons to this: • « What Do I Have To Do » was originally produced as a full-length 12” version and it was then mixed by Tony King (who was providing club orientated remixes of PWL tracks after the initial pop versions had been completed). His mix was called « Billy The Fish Mix ». Rumour has it that when the song premiered on Pete Waterman’s Radio City show in Liverpool in August 1990, it received a lukewarm response within the PWL building, which made SAW think twice about releasing it immediately. « Step Back In Time » received a much more positive feedback. • At the time - there was no doubt about it - the UK market was surfing on a 60s/70s wave. Songs such as « Groove Is In The Heart » by Deee-Lite (August 1990) and « Where Are You Baby/Betty Boo Doin’ The Do » by Betty Boo (May and July 1990) were absolute hits and their vintage fashion videos created the (positive) buzz! The vintage fashion was back, both visually and musically.

There is significant information related to this particular song. Indeed, it was the first time that Steve Anderson would work on one of Kylie’s songs. He came up with the « Big Shock Radio Mix » which was a classy recording of the song (listen to it if you haven’t yet) which would become a collector’s item because only available at the time on a promotional 12”). It’s into is more delicate and gradually introduces what makes it a disco song. It was only officially « released » when her first four albums were re-released with bonus content in 2015.

Steve Anderson

This marked the beginning of Kylie’s longest-standing creative partnership. Steve Anderson would later remix « Finer Feelings » with Brothers In Rhythm for example and then he worked directly with Kylie throughout the 90’s and beyond, and became her long-standing musical director, frequent co-writer and producer. *** 12 www.kylie-world.com

The song is Kylie’s tribute to the classic 70’s floor-filler dance songs and dance moves of the disco era. It was the first time Kylie was doing disco music.

my image is a projection and an extension of me so this is the way it is. »

Its intro is brilliant, it’s like a mantra « I wanna FUNK, I wanna F-F-U-F-U-N-K » and it sounds a lot like an actual 1970’s disco sample. Admit it Lovers, either you or your parents thought the beginning was full of swearing (I can still see my mum’s face when she heard it for the first time haha). Even Kylie had to clarify that she was saying fuNk and not **** ! *** As said in last month’s issue of the Kylie Times, 1990-91 was definitely a transition time for Kylie and for her fans.

It was fair to say though that in 1990, Kylie’s profile was reasonably high but it was nothing in comparison with the media blitz of the past 3 years. But that was done on purpose: Kylie was now presenting herself as a serious artist and that meant less publicity and more hard work. So even though some people couldn’t quite keep up with her image change, one thing was for sure, the fact of not appearing anywhere anymore as Charlene helped her pop persona to be taken more seriously. And of course, gays (and gay clubs) adopted her even more with this new single. « The last year had been so fulfilling and perIn the UK, « Step Back In Time » marked the beginsonally great, not just work-wise. People are ning of a backlash against her new « raunchy » image taking me a lot more seriously now. There amongst her initial fanbase of young teenagers. Inhas been a general change towards me evedeed, even though in the UK her new grown-up rywhere and it’s definitely for the better. I feel image was helped by the fact that she was no longer more solid, I feel like I’ve finally made it. For appearing as a garage mechanic in Neighbours (her a one-hit wonder, I’ve been here for a long final scenes aired there in November 1989) nor as the time. » girl-next-door in the press, people were still shocked of her ‘sudden’ image change, they were under the impression Kylie had grown-up overnight. Terry Blamey confirmed : « It’s weird that people think I have changed all of a sudden because they might have seen me 6 months ago or a year ago but for me my image is where I am at the moment and I’m just not 18 years old anymore, which is what most people remember me as. So I didn’t change from one day to another it’s just a growing process. I’ve changed and

« Kylie now looks at herself and her career through the eyes of a more mature, more accomplished, more self-assured and confident performer, relative to the Kylie Minogue of 1987. There has been less publicity on Kylie in 1990, in comparison with 1988 and 1989, which is a good thing as there may have been too much in previous years. »

Focus • Step Back In Time Things were not going so well with Stock Aitken and Waterman though... In December 1990, Mike Stock and Pete Waterman gave Smash Hits an interview and were rather clear: they did not (at all) like the increased control that Kylie was demanding over her music and image. Mike said: « The thing is, having such a massive success Kylie is hardly likely to want to retain just one aspect of the recording process – just coming in and signing – so it’s probable that she’ll want to do it all very soon and we won’t be involved anymore. It’s fair enough that this isn’t the sort of direction in which we’d want to take her. » To be continued...

that consists of stepping movements back and forth and a lot of butt shaking. • « To the funky music » : « Play That Funky Music » is a song by American funk rock band Wild Cherry (1976). • « Hustle, pumpin’ the Muscle » : Van Allen Clinton McCoy is an American musician, record producer, arranger, songwriter, singer and orchestra conductor whose most successful song is called « The Hustle » (1975). In addition, the Hustle is a catchall name for some disco dances which were extremely popular in the 1970s. • « Blame it on the boogie » : well of course here, everyone knows that this is the title of a song from The Jackson Five (1978). • « Remember the O’Jays » : The O'Jays are an American R&B group from Canton, Ohio, formed in 1958. They became really famous with their song called « Love Train » (1972). • « Walking in rhythm » : It’s the title of a 1974 song by The Blackbyrds, an American blues and jazz/funk fusion group. • « Life was for living » : « Life is for Living » is a song dated 1981, of the Barclay James Harvest, an English progressive rock band (OK so it’s not really from the 70’s but it’s close enough). • « Ball of Confusion » : The song « Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today) » is a hit single by American vocal group The Temptations (1971). • « Keep On Truckin’ Along » : « Keep On Truckin » is a song by Eddie Kendricks, who was a member of the Temptations (1973). • « Riding on a Love Train » : As said, « Love Train » is one of the O’Jays most famous songs. • « Then you can float on » : « Float on » is a hit song by R&B and soul band The Floaters (1977).

The lyrics for this memorable tribute to the 70’s disco are almost completely made up of references from that era and of classic disco song titles and lyrics. Kylie said: « It’s just a fun song. All the lyrics are made up of old seventies song titles and phrases so it’s nothing new but that’s the whole point of the song: to say that if you can’t come up with something new, pinch something else! »

CRITICS/REVIEWS

The single received the most attention in regions « Step Back In Time » mostly received positive like Ireland, UK, Australia, and Israel. Outside of these reviews from music critics. « Stock Aitken and Waterman do a good job with « Step Back In Time », a few production flourishes that firmly plant the tune in disco, help Kylie take steps towards becoming a diva. I must say, I prefer « Step Back In Time » to the usually more popular « Better The Devil You Know ». Both are good enough, though. » Nick Levine from Digital Spy pointed out the song as one of the best cuts from the album. Chris True from AllMusic selected the track amongst some of Kylie’s best work. Weirdly enough though, in a separate review of the single, he only awarded the single 2 stars out of 5.

THE VIDEO William Baker: « Her coronation (as the Queen Of Pop) was celebrated in « Step Back In Time », shot in downtown L.A. and directed by Nick Egan, a brilliant homage to the music and dance moves of the era that created disco, the seventies. » During an interview in the nineties, Kylie said: « I actually did some research for my video, looking through magazines and videos and such, and it was basically so ugly, I was trying to find the cool parts of the seventies and combined it with the 60s. » Years later, in her fashion book, she stated: « Filming the « Step Back In Time » video meant lots of OTT (Over The Top) pieces and I loved all of it. The Mary Quant Lurex tights/ bodysuit made many appearances around that time. Vintage clothing has always been a major part of my wardrobe. »

Focus • Step Back In Time The filming of the video started on September 22nd 1990. It was directed by Nick Egan in downtown Los Angeles - USA, and filming lasted 2 days. It was the first Kylie video to be shot outside of Australia or the UK.

Kylie got to choose the clothes that she wore, and she really enjoyed it as she had missed out on wearing all of that because she was too young in the seventies, and when she was a teenager, she wasn’t allowed to wear those clothes. Now she could wear them all with a sense of humour.

oversized glasses, a furry rainbow-coloured jacket or a green feathered jacket, a vintage peach polyester dress or again a vintage gold or white dress. Her hair is backcombed, her makeup is gorgeous (the eyeliner is VERY present) and she’s wearing fake eyelashes. It goes without saying, but the dancers are also dressed in 60s/70s outfits.

Nearly all along, she’s dancing - looking really fit and showing (a lot of) flesh - and basically just having fun, either with dancers near a large cityscape, in a blue room wearing colourful clothing or against shimmering backgrounds and/or a wall of patterns and lights. There is one scene that we don’t get to see a lot, it’s Kylie in an egg chair in her vintage peach dress.

You know like « This is not that great but it’s kinda cool ‘cause it’s so bad. Those clothes were so much fun to wear! ». It was the most fun Kylie had had on video so far. « The dancers were great and all slipped into the character of the clothes they were wearing ». One of them in particular was hilarious according to Kylie and knew everything about the 70’s. She said that basically everyone had a really good time and laughed all the time. « It was just fun and that’s what At some points also, Kylie is travelling around LA I wanted to come across in the clip ». with her dancers in a huge red open-top Cadillac throughout LA. More than actually dancing, it looks In this clip, Kylie chose to imitate a couple of like they’re having a big party. At the end of the actresses from the 60’s, she adopted a Barbarella video, Kylie blows us all a kiss (is it a reference to her (60’s space age movie featuring Jane Fonda) meets old videos where she does that too?). PHOTOSHOOT

• Michael Hutchence was with Kylie during the whole « Rhythm Of Love » photoshoot in the USA. Kylie loved shooting outdoors and to this day still prefers to be in a « real » environment than in a studio.

The photoshoot for this single is just FABULOUS! It’s colourful and fun, I absolutely love the photos taken in the US by Markus Morianz (he also did the photoshoot for the « Rhythm Of Love » album). I love • Japanese singer Aiko Kayo made a cover of the song the different architectural backdrops too - but to be and it’s.. hum... well, strange... fair this is one of my fave eras so of course I love all • The vintage peach polyester crêpe dress with coin the photoshoots! trim around neckline and matching belt (by Saks Fifth Markus Morianz recently shared a picture of Ky- Avenue) that Kylie wears in the video was donated to lie in her gold dress from that era on Instagram and the Arts Centre of Melbourne for the Kylie Exhibition (and it’s beautiful!). wrote: « I love to shoot with available light... it’s just like being at the right time at the right place. This one, almost a snapshot happened on the way to a different shooting location while driving through downtown LA. We just stopped at this place, jumped out of the Winnebago, took a few shots until we got chased back to the trailer by a crowd of hysteric Japanese girls screaming Kyliiiiiie on top of their lungs. But in the end a shot from this location made it to the album cover of « Step Back In Time » ». He also said about the pic below: « There are many things you can do on your knees besides praying. Posing for a pic is one. »

• « Step Back In Time » was featured in « The World's End », a 2013 British science fiction comedy. It can be heard as the characters enter the school-disco scene. It was included on the soundtrack as a deluxe version bonus track. In an interview, the director Edgar Wright said : « It ultimately had to be « Step Back In Time », because that’s precisely what the lead character is trying to do. It’s got great lyrics and the breakdown during the school-disco scene is one of my favourite bits of music in the movie. » • In the 1990 poll by Smash Hits (who had until now supported Kylie), she won several « worst » awards including the « worst dressed » for this single’s video (oops!).

DID YOU KNOW?

• Kylie wanted a massive pair of platform cork high heels when she was in grade 6 (lol!). However, she admitted that she could hardly walk after the 2 days filming because of the platform shoes.

• Kylie covered the O’Jays’ most famous song « Love • When she was a teenager, Kylie soured the local Train » during her « Rhythm Of Love » and « Let’s Get markets for vintage finds. To It » tours. 18 www.kylie-world.com

• The magazine Vogue was so inspired by the seventies-themed attire of Kylie in this single’s video that they devoted an entire 6-spread to her, dressed in a 60s/70s style in their Christmas issue of 1991. The photoshoot (by Michel Haddi) took place at the Raymond’s Revue Bar in Soho and Kylie was mainly wearing Thierry Mugler and Christian Lacroix. « It’s interesting to see that this was the first time I was portrayed as a Showgirl. A sign of things to come! »

MICHAEL HUTCHENCE Because Michael was so important in Kylie’s entire life (and not only in the nineties – even though at the moment that’s the era we are focusing on), I thought he really deserved a little focus. Michael was born in Sydney (Australia) on January 22nd, 1960. His dad was a business-man and his mum a make-up artist. The Hutchence family later moved to Brisbane where younger brother Rhett was born, and then were relocated to Hong Kong as a result of their father taking a job at an Australian trading company there. When Michael was 12, the family went back to Sydney, where he attended Davidson High School. That’s where he met Andrew Farriss, who was a keyboardist and guitarist. They became good friends and Andrew asked Michael to join his band called ‘Doctor Dolphin’. In 1977 the band was renamed ‘The Farris Brothers’ and was composed of 3 brothers: Andrew Farriss, Jon Farriss (drummer) and Tim Farriss (guitarist) and also of Michael Hutchence, Garry William Beers (bassist) and Kirk Pengilly (guitarist, saxophonist and backing vocalist). In 1979, their band was renamed INXS (‘In Excess’). Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder rock style. In 1980, they charted in Australia with their debut self-titled album, but the album which provided the band with worldwide popularity was « Kick » (with « New Sensation », « Never Tear Us Apart », « Devil Inside », « Need You Tonight »…), released in 1987. In 1990, INXS released « X », which contained international hits such as « By My Side » and in 1992 they released their last album « Welcome to Wherever You Are » but they did not tour to promote that album. On the morning of November 22nd, 1997, Michael Hutchence, aged 37, was found dead by hanging in a hotel room at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Sydney (and that’s the only thing I’ll say about his death – because it’s 1. not a very pleasant subject and 2. not the aim of this article). 24 www.kylie-world.com

Rumour has it that Kylie and Michael met for the first time in 1987 (when INXS was one of the most famous rock bands in the world). At the time Kylie was still appearing in Neighbours and had only released « Loco-Motion ». That night, it seems that Michael came up to her and said something like « I don’t know what we should do first, have dinner or have sex ». I guess Kylie must have felt slightly uncomfortable …

KYLIE AND MICHAEL They met again at the end of 1988, when Kylie and Jason were invited to an after-show party after an INXS concert in Melbourne. Then when Kylie travelled to Japan at the end of September 1989 for her debut world tour, she stopped over in Hong Kong first and Michael - who had a home there - took her out to dinner. He had heard that she was around from a mutual friend and had offered to show her around. It was reported that he turned up very late at the date and Kylie’s mother, her dancers, her assistant and her manager were all waiting for him. « They were getting more and more protective and annoyed »

said Kylie in an interview with the Telegraph. « When he finally showed up, he was confronted by all these angry faces ». Kylie reported that, that night they went out and stayed out talking in the streets of Hong Kong until 4 or 5 in the morning, that they hit it off amazingly well, but that she didn’t let him kiss her which probably drove him crazy. He then started sending her flowers, called her all the time and very soon they were together, at least as often as their busy schedules would allow. They had a few days together in Tokyo in October 1989, and then they agreed to see each other again after Kylie’s

25 www.kylie-world.com

touring commitment ended and indeed, in November 1989 they managed to spend a week in a hotel room. Michael and Kylie dated for 18 months. 18 very intense months that would change Kylie forever. To many people, the possibility of them two being a couple was very unlikely. He was 8 years older than her and was known for being a womanizer with a rock’n’roll lifestyle, whereas Kylie at the time was just a young ‘naïve’ artist with an innocent girl-next-door image. But as Kylie later stated « Michael wasn’t as bad as everyone thought and I wasn’t as good. We met somewhere in the middle ».

THE DELINQUENTS PREMIERE SYDNEY In December 1989, Kylie returned briefly to the UK for the world premiere of The Delinquents and to record the remake of « Do They Know It’s Christmas ». After that she went back to Sydney for the Australian premiere of the film, which she attended with Michael by her side. It was their very first public appearance as a couple, confirming that the rumours were true. However, the most ‘shocking’ thing was that at first people didn’t even recognize Kylie! They thought that Michael was attending the premiere with ‘some chick’. When they realized the ‘chick’ was Kylie the media went crazy all over the world. Kylie looked completely different in a cropped blond wig.

appearance was remarkable. With long hair crammed under a Jean Seberg-style short blonde wig, she wore a mini dress emblazoned with bugle-beaded noughts and crosses, designed by Australian duo Morrissey Edmiston. It caused a sensation. In the media’s eyes she had stepped over a precipice and out of the confines of her little girl image and had become a woman overnight. As she and Hutchence faced the photographers, she looked every inch the star and the two of them, in co-ordinated outfits, definitely in love ».

LOVING AND GROWING UP As the nineties began, Kylie was on top of the world: she was number 1 in the UK charts with Band Aid II’s cover, her film was playing to enthusiastic audiences all over the world and her romance was blossoming. Kylie said a lot about Michael (mind you at the time the press were more interested in Kylie’s love life than in her career, and that was reallyyyyy annoying…): • I’m a fatalist. That was the time I was meant to meet him. It was like my blinders were taken off and I entered the next stage. He was intelligent, witty, wild, poetic. I was a suburban girl, working in a soap opera and was too naïve to think why he would be interested in me. I was meant to blossom a bit and learn a bit about the world. And I can’t think of a better person to do it with. • He gives me confidence. He knows a lot, so he can give me advice. • He opened my eyes to a completely different world and I think I did the same for him in a way. He’d travelled down a lot of roads and to start dating a naïve 21-year old, as I was, was a real eye opener for him. • He was a wonderful teacher and lover. But it wasn’t just sex he taught me. We’d all be very lucky if we could experience a man as charismatic as Michael. • He thought he knew everything about the world and then he met me and saw this little creature that was learning something every day. He used to say it was almost frightening watching me learn and grow up in front of him. He told me he was overwhelmed by my innocence and thirst for experience. He saw Michael, Richard and Kylie

me mature in front of his eyes. • He introduced me to so much. He had this label as the wild man of rock, but he was so many other things. • He told me when performing to imagine I was wearing an ego jacket for protection. Then if you say or do something silly, it’s just the person in the jacket. Michael also shared his thoughts on Kylie: • She is very underestimated; she’s not at all this wimpish personality people think she is. She’s very intelligent and deep. A former member of Kylie’s band said that Michael had introduced Kylie to nightlife and Kylie had introduced him to daylight. Richard Simpkins (photographer and young friend of Michael’s), released unseen pics of the couple together in a picture biography entitled « Michael In Pictures ». He revealed that Michael loved Kylie so much that he sent her faxes to express his feelings. « They were very affectionate, very close, if they were in different countries he would send her faxes saying ‘I Love you’. He was recording his album and Kylie would come almost every day for 3 month. She adored him, it was clear. She was star struck, just like I was. And he loved her…»

During 18 months, Kylie and Michael would fly between their homes in London, Sydney, Hong Kong and France, leading a glitzy lifestyle of parties and pleasure. Michael was famously quoted as saying that his favourite hobby was ‘corrupting’ Kylie. He also introduced her to his friends so she developed a much wider circle of friends thanks to him. And of course, we all know the story about the handcuffs. Kylie once said during an interview : « That story will follow me around forever. Everyone looks so unconvinced when I explain this. I had this little leather pouch with handcuffs as the handle.

I was travelling to Monte Carlo from Heathrow, so I put the small handbag into a larger carrier bag. It never crossed my mind that they would be construed as a dangerous item. was to admit of this period: « I was out of control for a while. I was rebelling against everything I couldn’t do before. I had to get it out of my system ». Before the year 1991 was over, the pair had become friends again, they were sometimes seen deep in conversation at parties. ***

They spent Christmas 1990 in Michael’s villa in Roquefort les Pins in the South of France (it was Kylie’s first Christmas away from her family), and after that, INXS went on tour to promote their new album. In February 1991, Kylie was back on the road to promote « Rhythm Of Love » in OZ. All was great for her work-wise but her personal life wasn’t that good. Michael had recently ended their relationship over the phone. It seems that Michael’s infidelities were the cause of this break-up, and soon after he was publicly stepping out with supermodel Helena Christensen. Kylie was devastated but the relationship had become unhealthy « I was so hurt with the break-up because I was very much in love with him » she recalls. « I spent a good part of the time crying my heart out. There were days when I just wanted to stay in bed ». To this day Kylie describes her romance with Michael as a critical turning point for her and refers to him as one of the great loves of her life.

Years later (July 2014) Kylie broke down in tears as she opened up about her love affair with Michael again. Talking candidly in an episode of TV Show 60-minutes, she said that she had « never met anyone like him ». She said: « It’s a mixture, a mixture of emotions and memories. It was a great love and a true heartbreak ». It wasn’t the first time she had opened up about their relationship. Earlier in 2014 Kylie told GQ Australia her former lover was responsible for so many of her life experiences. « You want to experience everything and I couldn’t think of a better person to take those first steps in the big world with ».

Perhaps as a result of the break-up with Kylie needed to let her hair down. « I’m not addicted in any way to drink, cigarettes or anything like that but I very much need interaction with people, I need to be enticed and stimulated and not be bored ». Later she

« When he died, I remember thinking at the time that of course his was the first funeral and the first kind of thing like that because Michael was just so many firsts in my life. He was, yes he was ».

AND ALSO...

« INXS: Never Tear Us Apart » is a two-part Australian mini-series from 2013 about the story of INXS, their personal lives and their rise to fame from Australian pubs to stadiums all around the world. Of course, in the mini-series, we see Kylie and Michael’s love story, with scenes of how they met, loved each other and how he ‘corrupted’ her.

And of course, let’s not forget that also in 2014, after having revealed that Michael Hutchence still had a special place in her heart, she paid tribute to him by performing, on each date of the « Kiss Me Once Tour », the song « Need You Tonight ».

Kylie is played by Samantha Jade

She said her version of this song was her way of keeping his memory alive. She told Metro: « I’m asked about Michael all the time. It just struck me that would be a great song to do; it’s just such a strong vibe to perform that song ».

Michael is played by Luke Arnold

« You shouldn’t really do anything to it. Just let it be and sing it really simply. I love the staging and that. It’s very still and sexy. I like to have that little tribute to him ». When asked if she thought Michael would appreciate the cover, she simply answered: « Yeah, of course. I’m sure of it otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it ». 30 www.kylie-world.com

THE Golden Tour IN EUROPE ! After Ireland getting cancelled due to a throat infection the singer came back on stage at the beginning of the month, to start the European leg of the « Golden Tour ». Once again the surprise was kept until the last minute - we did not know exactly if it was the same show as the UK leg or the promo tour « Kylie Presents Golden ». The wait is now over and we had the pleasure of attending some concerts that we will summarize. If you missed the last issue of the Kylie Times, I encurage you to read it before this article because we will talk a little less about the concert itself (that has not changed much). Here is a summary of the first part of the tour in Europe, from Brussels to Vienna (the dates which are already past us obviously, it would be difficult to write something on shows that have not happened yet) the other part will be up in the next issue of the Kylie Times!

THE TICKETS ON SALE

Regarding the different tickets on sale, the categories « basics » - I mean by that sitting and standing - were on sale, as well as the VIP packages (Early Entry and Hot Seats) which contained exactly the same things as the UK leg. Only the « Golden Circle » session was not available, the arenas being too small to offer this one. The price of the seats varies according

to the venues, from 50 to 80 euros for the standing pit, 80 to 110 euros for the sitting and 150 to 200 euros for the VIP packages. Note that France had a category « Golden Circle » sitting at La Seine Musicale for 106 euros, placed in front of the stage in the center in the stands.

CANCELLATION

The Luxembourg concert got cancelled

About fifteen days before the start of the European tour, this bad news came by e-mail to people who had purchased their tickets to see the show in the Luxembourg, and the reason for it listed was scheduling problems - at least this is the reason given by the venue. The tour started not the 6th of november but the 8th in Brussels. Despite this disappointment (many fans wondered if Kylie was still sick), the tour started well in Belgium and the fans got their money back very quickly.

03

THE STAGE

Another surprise this time, the stage. We knew more or less after talking with Kylie’s team that it would be difficult to get the catwalk into most venues and so we did not expect to see it, but we weren’t sure... After all, the catwalk did not make its way to Europe and Kylie performed on a much smaller stage than usual, but had kept all the elements that we

had seen at the « Golden Tour », from the disco ball to the phone booth or the golden door. Motorcycles have even been added for the act in which she sings « Slow ». On the side of the stage, a little behind, you can see a table with chairs, which replace the pool table for « A Lifetime To Repair ».

36 www.kylie-world.com

Laeti, November 2K18

This limits the possibilities to choose a spot during you are at the main stage and you can see the whole the show, because apart from being at the front of thing, which is really not bad especially in small arethe stage, you do not have much of a choice. On the nas. other hand, Kylie does not start singing behind you if

LIVE

We will not go into the details of the story of the concert and we will let you re-read the last issue if you want more information. Here are the main changes to note: • The arrival of Kylie who suddenly does not arrive from below the stage but through the door on the right side before settling on the mountain of suitcases. • The fact that the singer has a different dress every night (and to be honest it’s super cool and surprising for those who do several concerts!). • The change of setlist at the beginning which gives more rhythm to the concert (you can find the complete setlist just after). • The disappearance of the break (AND THANKS GOD IT’S SO MUCH BETTER LIKE THAT!). • The fact that there is no pool table, replaced by a normal table and that the bikes are already on stage for « Slow » due to a lack of space. • Much smaller confetti. • No more denim jackets but white jackets with the name of the city when she is doing several dates in the country and the name of the country when it is only one concert. • Setlist changes took place and « Radio On », « Get Outta My Way » and « I Believe In You » were removed. • Jenny and Katie are not present on the tour, they are currently with Robbie Williams. We are delighted to welcome Naomi and Jeannette. • Abbie, one of Kylie’s two backing vocalists is not here either and has been replaced by Kirsten Joy. • Act 3 costume with golden top and jeans is no longer present. • The dancers dance during Studio 54 in the room with the golden door. • The setlist is divided into 6 acts instead of 7. 37 www.kylie-world.com

• Kylie gave Yves, a dancer, a unique moment to freestyle because he was in his hometown.

REVIEWS

#1 - BRUSSELS concertnews.be by Bert Hertogs Yeeeeeeees !!!! Kylie Minogue did it! The first date of her European tour was at the Cirque Royal, which has just been renovated in record time and was full. In Amsterdam, she will perform at the AFAS Live (capacity: 6000 people) but in Brussels, Live Nation Belgium has chosen the Cirque Royal, recently renovated and much more intimate with a capacity of 2000 people. The concert schedule of the hall is completely full. It seems that our favorite Brussels club has missed the audience. Kylie Minogue has come to present her latest album « Golden » - her fourteenth in total - in which she offers much more country-pop music than dance. A great opportunity, compared to what she will do in Amsterdam, to see her in a small venue for this show. And it turned out that the singer had a very good voice, was in a very good mood and that the concert was great! Critics (including the biased « quality » press) didn’t really talk about this show. New songs from her latest album, « A Lifetime To Repair », about the highs and lows of life set the stage on fire, the public counting down from 6 to 1 and « Stop Me From Falling » was sung by the audience. During this song, we also noticed the show had more rhythm. Kylie had a fantastic setlist in Brussels and sang for the first time in her career at the Cirque Royal. Obviously, she had also worked to improve her performance. Acts two and three have been merged to give more rhythm. Goodbye « I Believe In You » « In Your Eyes » (this song was moved to the first act) and « Radio On ». Smart choices that kept the show moving and immediately limited the number of changes of clothes. It’s by far the transition between the first and second acts that was the longest and we’ve seen the full track (« Blue Velvet » by Tony Bennett) as a video clip, while Kylie has performed it live a little at the end. As we sat next to the standing floor, we could see every movement she did, determined to impress with her voice. And yes, from beginning to end, Kylie Minogue sang live and she did it in an impressive way even though sometimes she let the audience interpret some lyrics including the inevitable « Especially For You », even though public support did not convince us as much as Jason Donovan. This track needs the true, the unique and the one Jason, that’s all.

The opening of the concert with song-name of her latest album was very well received, as well as the classic « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », sung in front of a phone booth. The Australian singer has also recorded peaks in the renovated arena up to 107 dB. Kylie provided a great show, with no less than three guitarists, a drummer, a keyboardist, two backing vocalists and - yes - 8 dancers on stage. Who would have thought they could all stand together ? During « Golden », she walked up on a mountain of suitcase that became her podium, before singing « Better The Devil You Know ». For the first time and the last one, the singer spread her microphone to the audience saying, « Say you will not leave me no more ». During « In Your Eyes », the beer was on a table while Kylie had a drink. When she had to start singing again, she confused her glass for a microphone. It’s this relaxed atmosphere - she is the first to laugh about this incident - that makes this performance so real, authentic and unique. Another super natural moment? When Kylie Minogue sees a fan with a golden carnival hat in the middle of the pit with a sign asking for a selfie and getting her on stage. While the person had to make her way to the scene before joining Kylie, the singer improvised with her band a « waiting music », one of the best moment of the concert if you ask me. Admittedly, there were also calm moments in the show. « X »’s « The One » did not really work and « Shelby 68 » was also moderately appreciated. And now that we list the parts to improve, the fact that Kylie sang « Confide In Me » lower than usual while at the beginning of the song goes straight up was a shame for us. But do not just consider our comments, we are just very picky and Kylie Minogue was very successful in Brussels. In the second act, she wore a white coat on her shoulders while her arms were not in the sleeves. « Belgium Golden » appeared at the back. She thanked the audience at the end of the show because some of them are following her for thirty years and to which we belong. Admittedly, we were one of the rare viewers to go crazy when Kylie Minogue started « Wouldn’t Change A Thing ». The 1989 song seems barely known to the general public, we sang from beginning to end. Why ? The song comes from the album « Enjoy Yourself ». The very first CD we bought.

are incredible tonight! » Absolutely. But it was only possible because she was too. She then sang « All The Lovers » which she dedicated to all the audience (but especially to her fans of the LGBT community) while we saw the colors of the rainbow put forward by the lighting of the stage and on the sign of the arena « Kylie Minogue Live Belgium ». For the final, she chose the disco / dance card with a mix of « New York City », « Raining Glitter » and « On a Night Like This ». Carole King’s cover on « The Loco-Motion » was great. It begins and ends with the « toot toot beep beep » of « Bad Girls » by Donna Summer. And lasers? They lit up until the end of the first « Encore » song on « Love At First Sight ». After a very disappointing show from Kylie Minogue at Palais 12 four years ago, the singer had to prove something in Brussels. On the first date of her European tour « Kylie Presents Golden », she did it unquestionably and she proved once again that the beginning of a European tour is always something special. All her hardcore fans were there, which made the atmosphere incredible but Kylie is also for something. What an artist ! What a voice ! Kylie proved it again in Brussels. You take the correct artist, the correct venue - which she complimented « It’s such a beautiful place » - a good audience. And you have nothing less than pure magic. Yeeeeeeees ! We also exclaimed as we left the arena. Kylie did it. She gave us a fantastic evening. #2 - PARIS purecharts.com by Julien Goncalves

We were 9 years old. Kylie Minogue did not mention the fact that she turned 50 this year. Or at least that’s what you think. During her third rock’n’-roll act, she wore a black leather biker jacket with « 68 » on the sleeve in red numerals and on the lower left of the jacket was written « 18 ». 68 is her year of birth. 18 the current year. Another message that was remarkable to say the least. At the end of the concert, a dancer wore a red t-shirt with the inscription « Mainly because of the meat », describing the fact that dancers are often chosen for reasons of flesh. During this rock act, « Kids » was undoubtedly one of the track that was most appreciated by the audience. With « The kids are not alright. They are amazing! » Kylie Minogue addressed a compliment to the public. Later, she did it in French saying « You

A few days ago, Kylie Minogue was in Paris for a concert at La Seine Musicale. The opportunity for the 50-year-old popstar to present songs from her album « Golden » and revisit her musical repertoire. But how to integrate her many dance tubes in a show around the country-dominated tracks of her latest album? That was the challenge for Kylie Minogue, who has won her bet overall. In the beginning, her band welcomes us with guitar notes in front of a giant screen where the sun rises on an American desert. The first western notes of the track « Golden » started while her dancers - cowboys and cowgirls - inevitably sexy landed under the applause. Sitting on a mountain of suitcases, Kylie, dressed with a light and floating pink, starts her song Golden. Behind the desert is revealed a little more, the band is dancing, the popstar is obviously happy to be on stage. The party can begin!

Focus • Golden Tour Europe Well accompanied by her dancers and vocally more and more confident, Kylie goes on with the disco « Better the Devil You Know » then the huge « In Your Eyes » before « A Lifetime To Repair », one of the most explosive track of her recent album, sang all together in the fireside before a dance explosion started with the sound of the banjo. The audience, totally acquired, comes together to dance and sing, and that’s how it is done ! It is with this communion between the singer and the audience who will carry this concert - not really equal on every parts - when the amazing and epic « Confide in Me » makes the atmosphere going down after a too long interlude on « Blue Velvet » , that « Wow » lacks strength or that « Can’t Get You Out of My Head » is slaughtered with new arrangements. Sacrilege! Often, Kylie Minogue switches between awesome moments (on the sensual « Slow », the popstar is perfect, in a leather outfit walking around two motorcycles before singing the festive « Stop Me From Falling ») and more anecdotal moments ( « Kids », « The One »). The show is however victim of a huge empty moment when are sung the retro « Wouldn’t Change a Thing », « I’ll Still Be Loving You » and « Especially for You ». She then turns into disco queen, diva pop and fierce biker at the head of her band « The Lovers United », Kylie still manages to be forgiven. « To health, to happiness and to love », she says with sincerity to the audience, taking a sip of water, before making fun of the French who called her « Kili » at the beginning of her career. In the midst of multiple lavish music videos on the big screen, Kylie Minogue touches by her simplicity and elegance. She skipped the excellent « Red Blooded Woman », « I Believe in You » or « Get Outta My Way » of her setlist but Kylie made everyone agrees when she sang « All the Lovers ». « It’s your song », she tells the audience, before starting an amazing crescendo version of this timeless and humanist track. First in acoustics, helped by the public, before the beginning of electro, rainbow colors on a big screen and a shower of confetti. Magnificent ! Playing on nostalgia with the regressive « The Loco-Motion »,

which works every time, the hit « Spinning Around », real moment of jubilation of the concert, or « Love at First Sight », Kylie Minogue then takes the time to listen when fans asked for a song. Thinking she heard « 2 Hearts », she sang it before realizing that they were shouting « Your Disco Needs You ». It was not planned at all, but the singer enjoyed it and played it all with her musicians and dancers, transforming La Seine Musicale into a disco club, before leaving us with the sound of the well-known song « Dancing », more catchy in live than on the CD. With a disconcerting naturalness, a lot of benevolence and an amazing energy, Kylie Minogue gave a concert that evening, certainly imperfect and far from her impressive shows of yesteryear but truly invigorating, which is good and balm to the heart. Thank you Kylie! sortiraparis.com par Laura B (Translated from the French article) After an intimate acoustic concert at the Café de la Danse last March to present her new songs, Kylie Minogue made a stopover at La Seine Musicale on November 9th, 2018 with her « Golden Tour ». This fifteenth tour of 26 dates across 13 countries is the next step after the release of « Golden », her 14th album studio, a bold record with which she began a more country era. In her « Golden Tour », Kylie Minogue takes us to the heart of the gold rush in the American Wild West. And, Kylie Minogue, had certainly left her watch in Australian time since it is (a little) in advance that her

concert began. Her musicians and dancers dressed in cowboys take place on a stage with golden glitter before the singer came by the golden doors that bring her from backstage to the stage. It is quite naturally with « Golden », and her cowgirl boots, that she begins the show with a first act in the country spirit of « Golden », even if she still sings old songs, as the enough disco « Better the Devil You know » and « In Your Eyes » in a more electro version. But, with « A Lifetime To Repair », it is in her saloon that she invites us, with images showing this saloon. Many other tracks will be supported by beautiful videos shot specifically for the tour. Kylie Minogue is a pop singer who is singing live. It is important to clarify this because it is not the case for everyone. Throughout the evening, she makes efforts to talk in French. For her second act, which begins with a re-orchestrated « Confide in me » with very worrying suspenseful Western notes, Kylie Minogue is still in the Wild West mood, even though she has took off her pink dress for a white jumpsuit… It is in a-capella that she partially sings Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ song « Where the Wild Roses Grow », giving a fan a red rose. Not shy for confidences, Kylie Minogue took the opportunity to share with the audience an anecdote about her first trip to Paris when she was 18, before she kept going on with « Shelby ‘68 », a song from her latest album that evokes the car of her father. A performance supported by images of the 50-year-old singer driving a car, conquering Route 66 ...? After this road trip, let’s dance on the very dancing « Wow » with its sound very 90’s although it was released in 2007, then in a much more acoustic and less electro version of her mega-hit « Can’t Get Out of My Head » . After changing herself, Kylie Minogue is back dressed in black leather (it fits the motorcycles which are already on stage) to sing 4 tracks including « Slow » which, contrary to what its name says, is pretty catchy. For « Kids », the cover of Robbie Williams, she gets closer to the bikes, before doing a country choreography on « Stop Me From Falling ». A short tour behind the scenes and Kylie Minogue is back with a plaid shirt tied around the waist to sing us some love songs. On « Wouldn’t Change A Thing », she dances with one of her dancers, and some confetti falls at the end of « Especially For You ». The disco-balls that hang from the

ceiling are finally triggered on « Lost Without You ». Kylie Minogue dedicated her « All The Lovers » song to the audience, which she started slowly before the song took over, in an atmosphere full of confetti and lit with the colors of the rainbow flag. After this moment full of love, Kylie came back in a golden dress that sparkles for the end of show placed under the label of the disco. Because a Kylie Minogue concert, even with strong country accents, would not be a Kylie concert without a dancing disco tube : it begins with a medley with excerpts from « New York City », « Raining Glitter » and « On a Night Like This », accompanied by sequins and disco-balls... before a « toot toot beep beep » sounds. And here we go for « The Loco-Motion » very catchy with brilliant dancers as in the 80s, with one wearing only underpants ! She ended with « Spinning Around », but to better come back for the « Encore ». If the « encore » sounds just as disco, the stage and decor have stayed in country mode, with this roadside phone booth. After « Love At First Sight », Kylie Minogue generously asks the audience what song(s) they want to hear. Despite the hubbub, two tracks stand out: « 2 Hearts » and « Your Disco Needs You » that the singer partially interprets improvising with her musicians, before ending with « Dancing », first single from « Golden », very disco but always with a country choreography. With the « Golden Tour », Kylie Minogue offers a real show, coherent, that tells a story, and we love it, even if her new songs have been able to confuse some and, that accustomed to sing in bigger venues such as Bercy, this time she opted for smaller arenas. As you can see, we had a great time at this Kylie Minogue concert. #4 - PADUA onstageweb.com by Nicola Lucchetta Enchantment: this is how you can sum up the Kylie Minogue concert at the Grand Theater Geox in Padua which is the only Italian date of her new European tour 2018. The Australian pop princess, also an actress (Street Fighter or Moulin Rouge) released her new album Golden last april, the opus that gives the name of the tour and which also explain much of the concept of the evening.

Laeti, November 2K18

Focus • Golden Tour Europe The soul of the concert is immediately visible in the arena: we find most of the elements of the country mixed to more recent objects (including a motorcycle parked on the left of the stage) and two disco-balls that are at the top of the concert hall. The stage is a continuous building site, with six different main configurations - as much as the acts of this show - and with continuous updates, even from one track to another: just think that in the interval between « Better The Devil You Know » and « In Your Eyes » we go from a typical pub with a pool table to the American suburbs in a blink of an eye. Kylie Minogue is in shape and, thanks to the help of two excellent backing-vocalists, she prouved her voice was really good. Singing and dancing, she is part of the choreography and decor, with many changes of clothes during the evening. In short: the Australian artist devotes her soul, voice and body to a perfect entertainment mechanism, lasting almost two hours. As mentioned, it is the country environment of the last album which characterizes the concept of the « Golden Tour ». And we can see it in the first two acts of the concert, the first being much more Western and the second more oriented on the atmosphere of the long roads of the Route 66. The vibe is positive and the stage becomes a kind of big party between musicians, dancers and even Minogue, with « A Lifetime To Repair » (a track on the ups and downs of life) with all her band in the center of the stage as if they were gathered around a bonfire. A little later, the singer will give a rose to a member of the audience before starting some notes of « Where The Wild Roses Grow », a track of Nick Cave. A moment to be noted in this first part is when the artist sang « Confide In Me » : red lights, a light just on her and her voice, which is perhaps the most emotional moment of the evening. The singer greatly amazed the audience in Padua, among which stands out a very important part of the LGBT community, to which the singer has given her full support over the years. Courage is also the word that can summarize some of the acts of the evening, and the choice to remove some of her most famous hits or change the version of other tracks such as « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » as example. The two central acts are rather those that stand out most by the clubbing and rock sounds of her musical repertoire. If she starts with « Slow » and

her dominant bass, « Kids » literally explodes the Grand Theater Geox. One of the most sensational pop hits of the last twenty years, a duet with Robbie Williams, is the same as the original. A rock segment but also dancing, where also begin to appear the first confetti (during « Especially For You » and « All The Lovers ») and laser on « Lost Without You ». The one who was expecting a Kylie Minogue dance concert and was ready to go home is largely satisfied with the final of the show, with a stage that turns into a chameleon and takes a flight from Los Angeles to New York City to get to Studio 54, the Big Apple’s disco music temple. The last act of the show is an explosion of dance music with funk features, a kind of return to the origins of the magnificent 50-year-old singer. An amazing medley (« New York City », « Raining Glitter » and « On A Night Like This ») opens the dance part, literally, for the most carefree segment of the evening, with a cover of « The Loco-Motion » more faithful to its origins as the pop version of the 80s. The « Encore », which closes the concert with « Love At First Sight » and « Dancing », ideally contains all the soul of the decor and show with Kylie Minogue wearing a green combination, making it the seventh costume of the evening. Although she has had a roller-coaster ride for a good part of her career, which has led to continuous ups and downs and stabilization in recent years (all with the disappointment that she never got big in the US), Kylie Minogue is more than entertaining pop artist. To qualify the concert as « simple » is misleading because it is a real musical comedy built around her most important tracks. This « Golden Tour », in essence, could also have provided the public with more than one clue about what could be the artistic future of an artist who does not want to slow down. #5 - MUNICH abendzeitung-muenchen.de What does a pop diva need in her lucky-charm bag? For Kylie Minogue, the answer is a line of cowboys and rockers in tight jeans, a gold stage and a lot of country elements. However, you quickly realize that this lucky-charm bag has become much smaller than it used to be. During her « Golden » tour, the 50-year-old Australian did her first German date at the Zenith of Munich. With about 2,000 people, the arena was only filled by one-third, the audience was mainly male

backing vocalists and a rather discreet audience since the beginning who dances more and more. Unfortunately, the singer can not maintain the mood, the new songs are much more countryoriented than before and sometimes seem almost bland. The staging is perfect especially in the act of Studio 54 where Kylie is in a golden glitter dress like her dancers who wear bright costumes. The density of confetti increased significantly at the end of the show. With the hit « Dancing », the show ends after an hour and a half. Her last outfit shows her legs a lot more and you wonder with a hint how Kylie has done these last 20 years to have no mark of the past on her. What remains « Golden » is an accessible pop singer, who does not, at least in appearance, get defeated by the fact that the golden age is over and proves it despite her size of 1,52 meters. And of course, the classic « La La La » stays in your head for at least three days. #6 - VIENNA vienna.at and often gilded. It even happened that some men rushed into the ladies’ room because there were less people - a very rare sight. The pop princess herself can not be dissuaded either by the very small audience or the unglamorous atmosphere of the concert hall: in the floating hippie pink dress, she appears in front of a mountain landscape projected on a big screen and begins of course with her new « Golden » hit, matching with cowboy hats and country dancing. The show consists of five acts, well proportioned between new songs and hits of the time. Kylie speaks a lot of German, drinks whiskey, but at first she is much less lascivious than she was before. White suit with inscription « München Golden » instead of the tight dress, more rock costumes instead of sexy pants. She thanks her audience several times, before starting her Nick Cave duet « Where The Wild Roses Grow », at the same time she gives a red rose to a girl in the audience. Kylie remains classic, but in the third act, the singer appears dressed from head to foot in black leather, before starting « Slow » like a queen. The fans are thrilled. Yes, that’s the icon they were waiting for, fifty years-old and absolutely fabulous. Then comes « Kids » without Robbie Williams, but with two

How time goes by: In the 90s and early 2000s, Kylie Minogue was one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. Some catchy songs like « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » persisted in the charts and in our ears, now another generation is at the head of Spotify playlists, and the Minogue concert in Vienna which took place on Wednesday offered an oldfashioned show. In the moderately filled arena of about 2,500 fans, Kylie Minogue came to present her current album « Golden », in which she became a cowgirl visually and musically, but this resulted in low-content songs. Especially since in commercial pop, you must keep in mind to make a lot of catchy and entertaining songs, which also made the reputation of Kylie Minogue back in the years. At the beginning, however, we heard little: accompanied by a group of five members, two extremely needed backing vocalists and an armada of dancers with surprisingly static behavior, Minogue don’t really move in her first act, in which was revealed the biggest problem. Although the 50-yearold singer doesn’t have the strongest voice, her skinny expression that night, which silenced some words that could not be recognized, was frightening. To convince us she used visual effects and the six sections of the two-hour evening were characterized by costume changes of all kinds.

Focus • Golden Tour Europe In the end, the track with Nick Cave « Where The Wild Roses Grow » was sang as a short interlude, the central part was more convincing thanks to « Kids », a duet track with Robbie Williams that was pretty good performed with her band and we can hear a true job on the track. The disco party brought a real plus to the show and was necessary. Thus, the arena was transformed into Studio 54 shortly before the end, « Spinning Around » being one of the best track shortly before starting « The Loco-Motion ». Between the two, there were always embarrassing and touching interactions with the audience, which showed that Minogue was a very likeable star. Several times, confetti were launched just like bright lasers, while Minogue made big gestures at the edge of the stage. Ten years ago, Kylie Minogue was a super star and spread her message of love and solidarity. Today, the fact that she has to earn money selling her « The Lovers United » jackets in smaller arenas will probably not surprise anyone after this performance. You had to close your eyes to recognize something of the glo-

ry of the past. The reinvention attempt with cowboy boots was definitely bad. She should have stayed with her sequined dresses. meinbezirk.at by Oliver Plischek De Wieden Singer Kylie Minogue, who turned 50 in May, has sold 70 million records in the past 30 years. In England, she can claim 34 singles in the top 10. Only Madonna has managed to do better. In this country, only 2,500 fans attended her performance in the city of Vienna. But they were not disappointed - despite some negative reviews of the media. To begin, the unconditional support of Sonic Yootha, DJ of Liverpool’s gay scene, has thrilled the pink community of Planet Music Hall. Disco and house classics tracks were played. Kylie’s 15th live tour features her new album « Golden », which features catchy pop hits and country tracks (recorded in a Nashville studio). In fact, the show is composed of a total of seven ou-

tfits changes, colorful dancers and many effects (like a laser show and a shower of confetti). This is a concert that shows the rapid evolution of the successful career of the singer (and perhaps still) underestimated. She then sang « The Locomotion » which dates back from the period with Stock / Aitken to « Better The Devil You Know », a anthem for the gay community, or « Kids », the duet with Robbie Williams and the greatest success that Cathy Dennis produced: « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », with a music video that marked the spirits. There will also be an a-capella version of « Where The Wild Roses Grow », the duet with Nick Cave. Among country-inspired songs such as « A lifetime to repair » and « Shelby 68 », there is a track from hip-hop dance label Deconstruction: « Confide in me ». One of the highlight of the evening, as well as the new

version of « Slow » mixed with the classic « Being Boiled » of Human League, produced in 2003 by the Icelandic Emiliana Torrini. Visually, the dancers have turned into a gang of leather bikers. And here is the arrival of the legendary Studio 54 and Kylie arrived on stage in a fancy sequined dress. « New York City », « On A Night Like This » and « Spinning around » were performed, however, it is quite bizarre that given the huge success in Europe of « Your Disco Needs You », the track was not sung. In addition to the nostalgic journey, « Love at First Sight » as well as two spontaneous versions of « In my Arms » and « 2 Hearts » and the last track of the new album « Dancing » were performed. Conclusion: A hit-pop show in a modern musical comedy, which deserved more atmosphere and more people at the concert.

BOYZONE COVER DANCING

nvited to Chris Evans’ BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, Boyzone came up with a cover of Kylie Minogue’s « Dancing », during promotion of their new album « Thank You And Goodnight ». This cover is acoustic and very country and it is true that it’s pretty weird at the first listen, but when you play it again, it is full of emotions. If you want to (re)see it, go to the BBC Music YouTube channel. Namely, after sharing the same stage as Kylie for the BBC Radio 2 festival in Hyde Park, the Boyzone band will also be at the Magic Of Christmas concert... Let’s hope they will all sing « Dancing » together!

Bazaar UK AWARDS

nd shortly before taking over the « Golden Tour » in Europe, Kylie Minogue re-appeared at Haper’s Bazaar Women Of The Year Awards, at the arms of her darling Paul Solomons at the Claridge Hotel. The singer arrived in a beautiful gilded dress and was awarded the prize of « Music Icon » from the hands of Nick Cave, with whom she spoke a bit behind the scenes. Many other guests were present, including Keira Knightley, Laura Carmichael, Adwoa Aboah, Dominic West and Peter Capaldi. Kylie gave some interviews there and as usual the journalists almost only talked about Paul…

THE COLLECTOR CASSETTE

W

e mentioned it last month and now it’s finally out ! Of course, I want to talk about the « Golden » collector’s cassette that you could buy on Kylie’s official store and which got sold out in a few minutes (1500 copies!). And the surprise was a little AAA pass inside the pretty golden package, which gives you special Shazam access to the performance of New York City recorded in New York during the promo tour. If you didn’t manage to get your copy, many cassettes are already on sale on eBay, but as always - do not forget that the original price was 11.99 euros, not 1199 euros...

BEHIND THE SCENES OF

« Music’s Too Sad Without You »

A

month after releasing the music video of « Music’s Too Sad Without You », Kylie decided to share a few sneak peaks from the filming. It was shot in Italy, at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where the singer performed the same evening to sing with Jack Savoretti as part of one of his concerts, and it was directed by Joe Connor who also posted some pictures of Kylie taken on 35mm film, with an Olympus OM1. Kylie also explained that they used a pizza tray as a light reflector for photos and filming. Pretty original idea, if you did not know how to do it at home, here is a good recommandation! Thank you Kylie!

BBC MUSIC

e had seen some teasers everywhere on the internet during a few days and we knew that a surprise awaited us... Kylie Minogue participated to the launch campaign of the new platform of the BBC (BBC Music) by appearing in an advertising. It shows the daily life of a young girl who listens to her favorite music and shows, including the participation of the artists and presenters themselves. So, when she listens to « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » in an elevator, Kylie sings her song. The advertisement is EXTREMELY well made and available on the internet if you want to see it and BBC Music is a great application to follow the news of your favorite artists!

AND AMAZED

n October 22nd, Kylie Minogue went to the London Palladium to attend a gala evening for Prince Charles’s 70th birthday. « We Are Most Amused And Amazed » is a unique evening bringing together the best artists of the moment for a show with comedians Armstrong and Miller as hosts of the event. Among the other artists present, Rowan Atkinson, Bill Bailey, Omid Djalili, Sandi Toksvig, Alistair McGowan and the magicians Dynamo, Penn & Teller and The Ehrlich Brothers. Kylie was expected to make a special appearance where she made a little speech and came back at the end of the show. She was then greeted by Prince Charles backstage who asked her if she had come back from Australia... She replied « no no I just came from Chelsea! ». The show will be aired in a few days on television in England.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE GOLDEN TOUR

THE GOLDEN TOUR IN AUSTRALIA

A

ustralians were looking forward this new since a while and the dates have been finally announced! Kylie Minogue will come back to her home country in March to present the « Golden Tour » with 6 shows, including three as part of the « A Day On The Green » festival. Jake Shears will open for Kylie for her concerts and suddenly we are pretty jealous! Here is a small summary of the « regular » dates, with seats only:

K

ylie recently decided to invite Nicole (aka En) behind the scenes of the « Golden Tour » so that she could photograph the singer during the concert with her 35mm camera, as well as behind the scenes, to share the atmosphere with the fans. Here is the message that the singer posted about this on social networks: « I invited Nicole to experience and share with you a ‘fans-eye’ view of the Golden Tour. With exclusive backstage access, Nicole was able to see some of the behind the scenes machinations and emotions of the show. I was inspired not only by Nicole’s dedication as a fan, but also her love of 35mm film. She captured these images for you all and the beauty of film is revealed in these real and emotive pictures, and of course the results of what she photographed wasn’t revealed until the photos were developed. Here’s to fandom and fleeting moments. Love Kylie x ».

You could already see the work of En in the previous Kylie Times, but to see more about these images alongside Kylie, go on the social networks of the singer!

Live Performances • November 2018

K

ylie Minogue was the guest of the famous English show « X Factor » on October 28th to present the fourth single from her album « Golden », « A Lifetime To Repair », for the first time live on a TV show. The performance got all the fans excited because it was the official return of the singer on stage after canceling the last two concerts of her tour in Ireland, in Dublin and Belfast, due to her throat infection. Kylie appeared at the end of the show (it’s the Little Mix band who opened it) and her stage consisted of a country bar recreated, which reminded us of the atmosphere of the « Golden Tour », with pool tables, a glass and bar as well as dancers. The video production and staging are really worth watching because for once, it has changed a lot from the typical Kylie television appearances stereotype.

X FACTOR - OCTOBER 28TH UK This performance has however been widely criticized on social networks because Kylie was not yet fully recovered from her flu and it can be heard a little bit at the vocal level, but hey - at least she did not do playback like many others... The video is also not available in replay on the X Factor Youtube channel, and we wonder if this is related to all the criticism received or if it’s just

some mistake. Kylie later posted an acoustic version of « A Lifetime To Repair » backstage with her guitarist and two backing vocalists, and there’s no doubt she’s singing really well! We will not talk about all the reviews but do not hesitate to tell us your opinion on this performance!

JONATHAN ROSS SHOW - NOVEMBER 10TH UK

I

n order to promote the probably last and most recent excerpt from her « Golden » album, Kylie went on the set of Jonathan Ross accompanied by Jack Savoretti to perform their ballad « Music’s Too Sad Without You » in a very cozy atmosphere with her band, and Jake playing the guitar. The two artists were sitting on high chairs and quite surprisingly, Kylie had a wire mic ???? Yes, I was very shocked to see that because I haven’t actually seen these in a long time? But except for that, there is nothing much to tell you about this performance, the two singers delivered an amazing emotional version of the track and I urge you to go (re)watch it now!

THE ONE SHOW - SMASH HITS UK - OCTOBEr 2018

K

ylie did a short interview for the One Show, on the occasion of the forty years of Smash Hits magazine, which has not been on sale since 2006. Kate Thornton met Kylie backstage of her concert in Leeds because the singer is the biggest selling cover artist of the magazine ! We have seen some excerpts from Kylie’s first music videos, including « The Loco-Motion » but also the most recent one, « Music’s Too Sad Without You» a duet with Jack Savoretti, or her hit « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head ». The host showed her one of the first covers she made it to in 1989: « It’s like stepping back in time » said Kylie, before smelling the magazine and adding that yes, it smells like back in the days ! She explained that Smash Hits was the link with all the important things in the music business. Kate Thornton also says that if you were not in the magazine, you were not played on Radio 1, and if you were not played on Radio 1, you were not going into the charts. The singer confesses that she did some ridiculous photoshoots at the time, with a different hat for each month of the year.

In the magazine shown, we can see a quote Kylie said : « I very rarely go to the supermarkets and when I do I try to get round as soon as possible », before giving the list of things she buys: asparagus, Chardonnay wine, Perrier water, henna shampoo or frozen prawns. She was also very surprised to rediscover that and found it fantastic to have kept it, which captures in some way moments of the past. She then answered the questions of the Smash Hits Biscuit Tin among which: if you were a kangaroo, what would you have in your pouch? What she answered her mobile phone - or if she empty her own hoover bag (the answer is yes) and if she had got a nice crockery (she said yes too). The full interview is available on YouTube if you want to see it !

nother interview with the Spice Girls, Josh Bishop and Novak Djokovic : the Jonathan Ross Show. The interview was very short due to the number of guests on the set (and it is not in these shows that we learn important things), but the presenter told her in particular that he would like very much for her to marry Jason. She came back to the fact that Jason came to see her in Hyde Park and ended up on the stage at the last minute and said that younger, she was not drinking whiskey when she was 18 or 19 but now it’s sometimes the case and that’s rather a little ritual

with her team before she goes on stage. She was also very disappointed to have had to postpone the Dublin and Belfast concerts after her throat infection by saying that she knew it was not the end of the world but that she was very sad about to somehow let people down that day. Kylie also talked a little about her relationship with Paul. She was then chosen as referee of a tennis game between the Spice Girls and Novak Djokovic (without getting hit by a ball wooohoo!) - and finished the show by changing her dress to perform her new single « Music’s Too Sad Without You » alongside Jake Savoretti.

I just thought ‘Oh here we go, this is a bother’ because trade marking is literally one of the most boring and expensive things to do. I was a little bit torn because of course there’s a lot of Kylie in the world but I thought « oh I can see what she’s doing/what her company is doing » and I didn’t want there to be any trouble about it, but we did have to handle it, so everything was taken care of, very nicely I have to say. So I felt bad even though I didn’t say it I thought « that’s not a really nice thing to say ». Has she sent you any lipsticks? (laughs) hmm no. Then they spoke about Kylie’s breast cancer (yes again!) because she was diagnosed 14 years ago, and it’s been five years since Kylie was given the all clear, but she said each year since is still a « milestone ». « I remember when I was able to finish taking a lot of medication I’d been taking, I was in a shopping centre and I got the call and I burst into tears of joy. But today, in general, I’m very well ». Lisa then talks about how Kylie announced her new relationship with Paul, referred to as British GQ magazine boss, via social media.

Would you say you’ve had a few love rats in your time? Yeah (laughs). I don’t hold anything against them but… well you live and learn Lisa, let’s put it that way. What have you learnt? THE YEAR OF living fabulously As she gears up to bring her latest tour home to Australia, Kylie Minogue tells Stellar about a whirlwind 12 months that have seen her find new love, reunite with old friends and « take ownership » of her path in life. Interview by CAMERON ADAMS

T

urns out Kylie Minogue hates both birthday parties and surprises. Yet Minogue’s 50th birthday party, thrown at London’s celebrity haven Chiltern Firehouse in May – mere days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle held their wedding after-party there – has changed her policy of a lifetime. When she stepped inside, Minogue stumbled into a mini- Neighbours reunion (Guy Pearce and Jason Donovan were on the guest list) and her band had set up a small stage with guest duet partners. Her good friend, singer and Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, played Kenny to her Dolly on a cover of 1983’s « Islands In The Stream », while Rick Astley (who also worked with mid-’80s hit makers Stock Aitken Waterman) serenaded her with his 1987 classic « Never Gonna Give You Up ». « I was literally on cloud nine for two weeks after the party, » Minogue tells Stellar. « I could not calm down. It was a room full of memories and love and stories. It was incredible. I barely had time for a drink all night; I was just chatting, hugging, helloing - chatting, hugging, helloing. Amazing vibes. Every performance on the night was a surprise, and there were all these video messages I wasn’t expecting ». « I’m not that person to do big parties. Girlfriends would especially hassle me about birthday parties and I’d say, ‘Why don’t the four of us just go for dinner?’ to try and get out of it. But everyone involved put so much effort into it and they managed to surprise me with a few things at the risk of me hating it. But I loved it all. It really was one of the best nights of my life ».

Remarkably, besides a few paparazzi shots of Melanie C, Graham Norton, David Walliams and Chrissie Hynde entering the bash, the entire event barely registered on social media. « For the most part, people were really respectful to not take pictures inside, and of the fact it was still a private event. And – side note – it’s amazing how once people get that in their head and put their phones away, they just have a completely different experience », Minogue says. Still, there was one photo from the night that she strategically shared with her 1.8 million followers on Instagram: a black and white Polaroid of her kissing a certain gentleman. It was her way of making official a relationship with 43-year-old Paul Solomons, creative director at British GQ magazine, who Minogue met through mutual friends at the start of the year. Ironically, it happened just as she was promoting her 14th album, Golden, which was written and recorded on the heels of her broken engagement to actor Joshua Sasse. When Minogue previously spoke to Stellar in March, she admitted she had been uncharacteristically open with the media about Sasse, who did many interviews talking about his partner in detail. « I’m not usually that public », Minogue said at the time. « It wasn’t just my decision, I went along with it. It was slightly out of character ». Now, aside from a sprinkling of posts on their respective Instagram pages, Minogue is back to keeping things private. And as for that initial photo outing them as a couple, she admits it was just their way of beating the paparazzi at their own game. « We thought someone is going to get a picture at some point, so let’s just post one », she says.

« I was on cloud nine for two weeks after my 50th birthday party »

63 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, November 2K18

« I’d managed to sneak away from the main room to the restaurant area. We sat down, realised we were starving, smashed two miniburgers and then Prince’s ‘Little Red Corvette’ started playing and I was out of my seat again. My assistant Tully had a Polaroid and he was taking some pictures and walked by when Paul and I were having that moment. He took one, legged it, and that was the picture that summed up that moment. And it was an absolute moment – we thought it was a nice, subtle way to [confirm our relationship] ».

M

inogue is coy when asked more about Solomons, who, like her mother Carol, is Welsh. They made their red-carpet debut at the GQ Awards in London in September. « When something’s precious, you want to handle it with care », she tells Stellar. « We’re learning about each other’s worlds; of course there’s a part of his profession that crosses over to mine. I really just don’t want to say too much. He’s a great, great guy. We’re just doing our thing ». Of course, Minogue knows her public yearns for her to find happiness in her private life. « I’m happy », she tells Stellar. « I’m very aware people are happy when I’m happy. That is sweet ». There’s a long pause. « I will add that this year, with so many big things happening, it’s been lovely and wonderful to have someone who really is there. It’s great to have success in your life – to have someone to share that with is really amazing ». Solomons is a music lover, fanboying over attending a concert by Minogue’s friend and mentor Nick Cave, who recently claimed the pop singer fills her texts to him with exclamation marks, and that she’s single-handedly bringing them back in a world filled with emoticons. « Well, there you go, another achievement for me this year », Minogue jokes. In July, Minogue and Solomons had another date night to see Bruce Springsteen’s Broadway show. « I was working in New York, Paul came over so we could be together but specifically so we could see the Springsteen show. It’s everything people say; it’s emotional and it’s human and he’s incredible. I was really inspired on an artistic level, and it makes you think about your life, the person you’re there with and their life. One minute you’re howling with laughter and then you’ve got tears in your eyes ». Springsteen turns 70 next year and remains one

of the planet’s most successful touring acts. Cher just finished an Australian jaunt at the age of 72, asking « What’s your granny doing tonight? » at the start of every show. Minogue’s personal pop blueprints also reached landmark ages this year: Madonna turned 60, Olivia Newton-john hit 70. The Australian started the year dreading being asked about her own milestone, titling her album Golden before realising the connection to a 50th anniversary, and even fielding questions about how long she plans to stay in the game. Her go-to reply was a lyric from the album: « We’re not young, we’re not old, we’re golden ». Upon reflection, Minogue says of being 50, « It’s about taking ownership of it. You can’t pretend it’s not happening – it’s about having a different mindset and a different attitude ». Even by her lofty standards, Golden has been a major success. As well as reaching number one in Australia and returning her to commercial radio with the hit ‘Dancing’, the country-tinged pop album has been particularly embraced in the UK, where it’s gone gold and now spawned five singles. « You just never know how something will go until it gets out there », she says. « You just can’t force a project to do something that isn’t its destiny. What has transpired has been brilliant ». An eternal hustler, Minogue has been promoting and touring the album relentlessly, from gay festivals in California to stadium shows across the UK and Europe. « It’s been a crazy, busy year. But I’ve had crazy, busy years that were not as successful, like with [2014’s Kiss Me Once]. It’s only time and distance where you can reflect upon those things. You have to go into every campaign the same way because you don’t know in advance what will happen. Sometimes you have a feeling. I did think Golden was a risk worth taking, but you can do all the work and the result isn’t there. It might come later. But you have to keep trying. I look at some actors’ work, and they do a lot of movies to get to the one that strikes gold. It’s the same with albums ». Golden contains a song called ‘Shelby ’68’, a nod to her father Ron’s beloved car. Her parents are notoriously media-shy, stealthy at avoiding red carpets and politely refusing interviews. « People have realised they’re just not interested in the attention », she says. « They were hoodwinked into it a couple of times in the early days, back in the beginning. It

would have scared the life out of them, particularly my mum. She barely likes being in pictures at home. How Dan [sister Dannii] and I turned out the way we did… Well, Mum was a ballerina, she’s got that performance side in her somewhere. But their avoiding of the spotlight does take some effort ». With Dannii juggling music and TV careers, brother Brendan (who has two children) has taken more of a role in the business side of his sisters’ careers. The Minogues are known as one of the most closely knit families in Australian entertainment. « I have known those girls all their lives », family friend Tina Arena tells Stellar. « We’ve all been famous, really, since we were kids. They’ve got a very good relationship with their family and their craft. You need good support around you ». Minogue’s former teenage boyfriend Donovan recently joined her at Hyde Park in London for a televised concert where they performed their million-selling duet ‘Especially For You’, which turns 30 this month and was recorded when they were still keeping their relationship a secret. The low-maintenance Donovan, who still regularly tours the UK as well as doing radio work, cycled to the concert. « I had this chin-stroking moment » Minogue recalls. « Jason is coming, would he want to sing ‘Especially For You’? We were doing it in the show, anyway; we had a gospel choir singing it. When he arrived on his bike, I asked him to sing with me and told him there was zero pressure if he didn’t want to. He was such a good sport. We had a quick warm up backstage and people were creeping into the room to have a listen. If we’d arranged it all beforehand, it wouldn’t have been that genuine. It blew people’s minds ».

Donovan, who also turned 50 this year, made headlines recently for reported bawdy comments about Minogue in his latest UK tour. « Jason did text me about that », she says. « I didn’t even hear anything about it until he mentioned it. I just said, ‘Oh god, don’t worry.’ You have to appreciate someone’s humour ». While Minogue tours Golden, she is also still working on a musical that would be based on her career and use her songs. « Everyone said, ‘It takes a long time to make a musical,’ and true enough, it’s taking a long time », she says. « There’s been quite a bit of work, up to a table read where you figure out what’s right and what’s not right, but it’s still at the drawingboard stage ». In the meantime, the tour will reach Australia next year, and she is planning to play a mix of indoor and outdoor shows for the first time as part of her plan to try new venues. « To use the football analogy, I can honestly say I’ve never toured where I’ve left nothing on the pitch like I have on this tour. I really enjoy every moment of this show. I’ve found myself doing things I’ve never done before, which happened really organically. Vocally it’s been lots of fun. Through making the album I’ve discovered new areas of my voice and new ways of delivery. I guess it’s maturing into myself, too. It feels good. It’s a big show. And a big sing. I’ve thrown everything at it and I love it ».

Kylie Reactions • November 2018

Trying to say hi to your friend who is seated from the pit (youuhuuuuu Peter can you see me?)

When you swallowed something the wrong way

Trying to run up the stairs to get the front row but you miss a step

When you want to be chic under any circumstance, even on a highway

When you arrive to the party and look for your crush

And find out he’s not here

When you find glitter at home a month after the Kylie’s show

When Kylie announced the Kylie Summer

And when I saw the prices

When you look at your bank account before booking tickets for the summer tour

When I remember I said I was gonna stop going to so many Kylie concerts and then realize I’ve already planned 4

When you come to the dentist and he breaks your jaw

When I listen to someone who’s lying when I know the truth

When I find out my ex just got dumped again

When my boyfriend brings me breakfast to bed (once in 10 years)

When I’m showing off my new shoes
