KYLIE MINOGUE SHOCKED Kylie’s next single « Shocked » was released in May 1991, i.e. four months after « What Do I Have To Do ». Written and produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman (who else?), it was the fourth and last single issued from the album « Rhythm Of Love » (and the last song of Kylie’s famous ‘Golden Quartet’). It’s an unexpected single because Kylie and her producers weren’t planning on releasing a fourth single from her third album, but when DNA came up with their 7” mix of the song, including a rap in the bridge by Jazzi P., it became obvious single material. Here’s everything you need to know about the single, and also what happened at the time in Kylie’s life.
Focus • Shocked Let’s be honest, the original album version of « Shocked » had a dreamy and rather innovative mix for a Stock Aitken and Waterman production, but, the DNA remix is a KILLER. Kylie was flattered that the song caught the attention of top producers and mixers DNA. They approached Stock Aitken and Waterman and asked if they could remix the track. Notably, this was the first time (since « Locomotion ») that PWL had allowed external remixers to work on one of their productions, but DNA were ‘special’; they were behind the hit remix of Suzanne Vega’s « Tom Diner » in 1990. They radically reinvented the track, making it super catchy and added a rap part written and performed by Jazzi P. (earlier in 1991, Jazzi P. had already worked with DNA and rapped on their song « Rebel Woman », which sampled David Bowie's « Rebel Rebel »). Even Waterman loved the remix!
and rapper, who participated in the 15th series of Big Brother UK in 2014. It was reported that she told Kylie back in the day that she thought her songs were 'shit', but funnily enough, Pauline was the one entering the Big Brother house while Kylie is still around in the business. « Shocked » was a perfect follow-up single to the brilliant and also catchy « What Do I Have To Do » and actually both singles (and respective videos) were often compared to each other. Even though - for many fans at least - « Shocked » is another one of Kylie’s best singles and another huge improvement in her musical style, it continued her downward sales trend. It became one of Kylie’s weakest seller to date.
Jazzi P. and Kylie Jazzi P. had guested on several other British dance records, and her biggest success to date had been « Get Loose ». Let’s face it, the fact of having a rapper do a cameo on a pop record is very common nowadays, but at the time, it was positively radical, especially for a single produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman! Jazzi P. also appears in the promo video for the single.
We’ll go into more detail regarding the video later on in this focus, but to cut a long story short, it would have been inconceivable, even just one year earlier, that Kylie would have contemplated shooting a video as sexy as the one for this single. It’s funny because Kylie considers that the video for « Shocked » wasn’t as shocking as the one she had done for « What Do I Have To Do » (because that one was such a big step forward) To introduce her quickly, Jazzi P. is actually called but for her audience, the video for « Shocked » was Pauline Bennett and is a British DJ, dance teacher her raunchiest yet. 10 www.kylie-world.com
Isa, January 2K19
Simon Sheridan wrote in the book « The Complete Kylie » : « She was not only breaking down people’s preconceptions about her, she was now shattering them into pieces. The woolly jumper-wearing girl-next-door had suddenly turned into a whip-wielding leather-clad dominatrix ». And of course, just like Kylie’s previous three singles, « Shocked » became a massive hit in gay clubs. Years later Kylie said « I was more or less adopted by my gay audience…, but I was possibly the last to know ».
William Baker in Lalala: « Kylie met Kat (Katerina Jebb) in Paris in 1991, after her relationship with Michael had ended with a phone-call. Kylie had sought refuge and escape in the melancholic romanticism of the city, away from the constant glare of London’s paparazzi. She didn’t want to be reminded of anything to do with him. Kylie travelled to Paris with just two phone numbers in her pocket of people she had recently met. She went for dinner at one of these friends’ flats and the person that greeted her at the door was Kat. From that moment on they became very close ». « Kat photographed Kylie constantly, always from her unique and very feminine perspective. Kat wanted to see the real Kylie. She hated the drag queen look, rubbing off Kylie’s heavily drawn eyebrows and covering her cheeks with only a hint of rouge to give her an English rose look. With Kat’s influence as friend and photographer, Kylie peeled away the layers of her public image, and began to develop her own personality and character. If her relationship with Michael had been her period of rebellion, the painful months that followed the split were her coming-of-age. Kat’s influence on Kylie was huge ».
Lyrically, the song canvasses confusion and understanding of love and relationships. The song’s theme of utter amazement at finding true love also led to a persistent urban myth that Kylie swears in the chorus. It has been suggested that she actually sings « I was fucked to my very foundations » rather than « rocked », it was always denied by PWL but it makes a great story. An extended 12” version of the single exists, it’s also called « Shocked (DNA Mix) », it’s 6.20 minutes long instead of 3.20 min, and there is another rap section by Jazzi P. at the very beginning of the song. *** On a personal level, a couple of months before the release of « Shocked » (early March 1991 - after her « Rhythm Of Love » Tour), a heartbroken Kylie went to Paris after Michael Hutchence had ended their relationship over a phone call, and that’s where and when one of her most famous (and long-lasting) friendships started…
Katerina Jebb As Kylie said it herself: « Working with Kat was a dream. She was my best friend and I truly admired her talent. There was also none of the pressure associated with other shoots. We could do what we wanted, just for our own pleasure. It was usually just me, Kat and the camera. We would do my hair and make-up, on occasion we hired one or two lights, which we would have to lug around all day ».

Focus • Shocked Katerina Jebb is a British-born artist, photographer CHARTS and film-maker. She has previously lived and worked in Los Angeles, California. In 1989, just two years be« Shocked » received ‘moderate’ success (comfore meeting Kylie, she moved to Paris. pared to Kylie’s other hits), but still reached the top 20 in several countries. As we all know, Kylie is a fatalist, so she’s sure that they were meant to meet at that time. It was just the • UK: The song debuted at number 10, and peaked at beginning of their friendship, and to this day they are 6. It spent a total of 7 weeks in the charts. However, still the best of friends and worked together again due to the ten chart performance of the song in that not so long ago. region, she became the first artist in the history of the UK charts to have their first thirteen releases go top 10. • Australia: The song debuted at number 13. It rose to number 7 and peaked there. The song then fell out of the top 10 but stayed in the charts 11 weeks in total. Chart positions in other countries: • Ireland: Peak 2 • Iceland: Peak 6 • Finland: Peak 8 • Belgium: Peak 18 • Germany: Peak 48 • France: Peak 50 • Netherlands: Peak 81
*** When « Shocked » was released the media were all over Kylie, but for the wrong reasons. I’m always actually shocked myself when I watch interviews from that time. They all ask her about her change of image (again), about her being raunchy in her video (again), about her split with Michael Hutchence (boriiiing) and/or if she’s seeing someone else. The song didn’t actually interest them that much, and honestly, you can tell during the interviews just how much Kylie is sick of all those stupid questions. What we know for sure now is that during and/ or straight after this video, Kylie and Zane O’Donnell started dating. It was a one-year on-and-off relationship.
« I’d be lying if I wasn’t concerned about it (the fact that her songs weren’t doing as well as before in the UK charts) but Top 10 isn’t bad and I have to keep my sense of proportion. I’ve reached a stage where I have to be true to myself. I’m not the Kylie I was a few years ago, so for me to be making the same kind of videos/songs as before would be holding myself back and I’d go crazy! ».
THE (SUPER SEXY) VIDEO The ‘very suggestive’ video was directed by David Hogan, who was also behind the video for « What Do I Have To Do », and Kylie’s male co-star in this video is Zane O’Donnell, who was also in her previous video. As said « Shocked » was often compared with « What Do I Have To Do », as the songs had a similar sound and the videos featured the same man and a similar atmosphere. The video was shot on 25th April 1991 at Pinewood studios in London. Kylie loved being at the 007 studios:
12 www.kylie-world.com
Isa, January 2K19
« The set was built for a James Bond movie so it has a bit of history. Generally in my videos there’s a mix of studio and outside broadcast. Actually we did some exterior yesterday so today we’ve been in the studio all day. Not only were all the James Bond movies shot here but this studio is where Superman and Batman were filmed too ».
The man in question is played by Zane O’Donnell, and at times we see them trying to seduce each other, and through some scenes we can see them intimately kiss in the car that she arrived in (and the assistant is very present in the video, always looking at Kylie and looking jealous…). We then see Kylie singing and dancing suggestively in a pink bra with white short and pigtails. In the background there is a harp that is only seen in silhouette in the video (fact: to make sure the strings would show up clearly behind Kylie in the video, the actual strings were replaced by thick cords).
Pete Waterman later recalled that when Kylie explained what she wanted to do in the video, he was like : « Sometimes I sat there and thought ‘either Kylie is on acid or I am’ and then you see the video and think ‘wow that’s amazing’ ». In the clip, Kylie features in a number of sexy guises: • An oversized man’s suit (with shirt and tie); • A girly pink gingham with her hair in bunches; • A pink ostrich feather skirt with a pink bikini top; • Leather hotpants and bra over a mesh catsuit; • A blue version of the same gingham outfit mentioned above. The video starts with Kylie being driven to a mysterious mansion-style home by a female assistant/driver. She steps out of the car to walk into this house through revolving doors and at the same time, a mysterious man uses the same revolving doors to leave but ends up staying in the doors. Actually, the revolving doors play quite a major part in the video, we can see them spinning round and round for ages. As Kylie put it « the idea of this is quite hard to explain. Basically I come through the revolving doors and once I’m inside it’s a surreal world ».
The following scene shows Kylie in a pink ostrich skirt, with a nude-torso frontal view. It then features rapper Jazzi P. (who we only get to see through a key hole), rapping to her feature in the song, and we also see Kylie dancing through the key hole. And then when Kylie finishes singing, she leaves the mansion smiling, with the mysterious man standing and watching her leave. In August 1991 Kylie said : « I really like the look in the video. It’s strong and it’s sexy. It’s quite deliberately different from what people expect of me ». At the time, it was clear that Kylie was completely embarrassed with her past image and music, she didn’t want to hear anything about it, and could barely look at past pictures and videos.

REVIEWS
‘Kylie Fashion Book’:
« Shocked » received positive reviews from most music critics. Many praised its catchiness. • Johnny Loftus from Allmusic highlighted it as an album standout when the Greatest Hits 87-99 compilation came out. • Nick Levine from Digital Spy misunderstood the lyrics as he said « On « Shocked », is she... would she... could she be singing « I was f**ked to my very foundations? »» And he was not the only one… • Stylus Magazine said that it was a great song along with « Give Me Just a Little More Time » and « What Do I Have To Do ».
PHOTOSHOOT The famous photoshoot for this single where Kylie wears all the outfits from the video (and more), took place in Paris. All pics were shot by Ellen Von Unwerth at the Grand Hotel of The Champs Elysées.
« Back then it wasn’t easy to borrow fashion samples for celebrities (fashion houses favoured editorial shoots with models) but Kylie was an exception. She was fast becoming a favourite of the fashion world, with her perfect sample-size figure and fun, sexy image. When she arrived in Paris, Kylie and I visited Azzedine Alaïa… The normally shy designer instantly took a liking to Kylie, cooking us lunch in his small apartment above the studio. He chatted away in French, his PR girl interpreting what he was saying. ‘I can speak English, but the only person I will speak it to is the Queen Mother’ he exclaimed. For this shoot he allowed us to take whatever we wanted from his spring 1991 collection, in my view one of his finest ». Indeed, since « What Do I Have To Do », she was appearing on magazines such as i-D and The Face, not only on Smash Hits. In people’s eyes, Kylie was really starting to be « cool ». Photographers, stylists and fashion designers joined her fanbase and she soon started working with fashion designers like John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier...
The Ellen Von Unwerth shoots were not only used for the « Shocked » physical releases. The pics where Kylie is wearing the pink gingham would later be used for Kylie’s next single artwork « Word Is Out », and for Stylist David Thomas (you can read all about him in a couple of magazine covers such as the magazine our previous edition of The Kylie Times) told us in the « You » in June 1991. 14 www.kylie-world.com

INTERVIEW EXCERPTS « Yes the video may possibly shock people, but I think the video before probably shocked more than this one will, because it was like the first major step in that direction. The idea was to cause some reaction of course, but not necessarily shock. I think if you get a reaction of any sort that’s a good sign. I do like to cause a bit of a stir. But the videos aren’t solely for that, it’s a bonus ».
• When this single came out (and as already said), the British music industry bible ‘Music Week’ announced that Kylie was the only singer in the history of British pop music to have her first 13 releases all go Top 10. But what you may not know is that it placed her ahead of Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Madonna!
« I like playing around with image, I’m very impulsive and impatient and I get bored incredibly easily so I tend to move from one thing to the next quite rapidly ».
• When Kylie returned to London after her Paris break and the release of « Shocked », she immersed herself in the city nightlife and was often seen with Zane by her side. So, let’s talk a bit more about Zane O’Donnell:

Although everyone’s talking about a change of image, that can’t happen unless there’s a change in me and that’s the most important point. At the moment I’m not too sure who my audience is because it’s a transitional period, I don’t think I’ve completely lost my audience of kids. KYLIE IN GLASTONBURY We have suspected it for some time and now is official: Kylie Minogue will perform at Glastonbury as part of the famous « Legend Slot » on June 30th. The singer should have performed at this famous festival in 2005, but breast cancer unfortunately forced her to cancel her performance. She made an appearance alongside Scissor Sisters in 2010 though, on the song « Any Which Way », and on the same stage that she’ll be standing on later this year: the Pyramid Stage. That’s an opportunity for us to focus on the history of the festival and see what made it famous and also on the history of Kylie with this legendary event!

THE HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL
FROM THE 70’s TO NOW Let’s start with the beginning: the history of the Glastonbury festival! Many of you know the festival by its title, but just a few know its history. Let’s have a look at it all together, you’ll see that it’s quite surprising!
01
I
THE 70’s
t all started in the 1970s, in the English countryside of Somerset, the south of the country. Michael Eavis lives there and wants to organize a festival inspired by the Blues Festival at the Bath & West Showground and invite The Kinks. Miraculously and for £ 500, he manages to book the band. Entitled « Pilton Pop Blues & Folk Festival », the event was held on September 19th, 1970, the day after the death of Jimi Hendrix, with Marc Bolan, Keith Christmas, Stackridge, Al Stewart and Quintessence. 1,500 people gathered for the occasion and the entrance was priced at £1, including a free glass of milk from the farm. The festival was launched. The following year, the event changed its name and got to be known as « Glastonbury Fayre » - supported by Andrew Kerr and Arabella Churchill who found that all other festivals at that time were over-marketed. Funded by people who supported the project, the entrance was completely free and mixed music, dance, poetry, theater, lights and spontaneous entertainment was all in. It is also this year that the « Pyramid Stage »
was built from scaffolding and expanded metal covered with plastic sheeting. The musicians who played also recorded an album that is now very rare. Among the artists present: Hawkwind, Traffic, Melanie, David Bowie or Joan Baez. 12,000 people were on the site. Then we go directly to 1978 when a small, unexpected event occurred when the police led a vehicle convoy from Stonehenge to the Worthy Farm, a convoy that believed a festival was taking place there. After a pretty convincing discussion, a free mini festival was held. There was little organization and few facilities, but no matter, the stage was powered by an electric meter in a caravan with the cable connected to it. 500 people were present.

In 1979, the festival was still called « Glastonbury Fayre » and had as theme « The Year of the Child ». Bill Harkin and Arabella Churchill were the instigators of the event and turned to Michael Eavis for financial support. He got a bank loan against the shares of the farm. The festival now extended over three days and set up animations designed for children. It was on this occa-

Avon, was born. Despite the success of the festival (12,000 people with tickets for sale at £ 5), the organizers lost a lot of money and
did not want to risk a new festival in 1980.
In 1983 everything became more and more regulated and the festival needed to get a license for the event with the coming into force of a law on local powers, giving local authorities the power to regulate such events in specifying the conditions. Thus, a public entertainment license was granted and set the number of spectators up to 30 000, while giving many details on the access roads, water supply or hygiene. It was also the first year that the festival had its own radio station, Radio Avalon. £ 45,000 was finally raised for the CND and local charities with a £ 12 ticket and an 80p program. The following year started off with five prosecutions against Michael Eavis by the Mendip District Council for failing to meet the licensing requirements of the previous year. Fortunately, Michael successfully defended his charges, all of which were dismissed after a day of hearing in the Shepton Mallet Court of First Instance. That year the licenses were priced at £ 2,000 and 35,000 people could be accommodated. Specific parking areas were created with dedicated traffic staff and messages were broadcast on the radio: if you have no ticket, you
were asked not to go to the event. £ 60,000 was raised for the CND and other charities and the tickets were £ 13, with The Waterboys, The Smiths, Elvis Costello, Joan Baez and Ian Drury. In 1985, Worthy Farm was too small to accommodate all festival-goers. It was decided to buy the field adjacent to Cockmill Farm to expand the site by more than 100 acres. But this was not without issues : who says big ground, says communication difficulties concerning the organization. So, the only way to evacuate people off site in case of bad weather was... Tractors. £ 100,000 was raised that year and the artists
THE 80’s
he 80s marked a new change: the festival was now held every year. The name was also changed to « Glastonbury Festival » and Michael Eavis took over the leadership of the event. The festival became the first event of its kind for nuclear disarmament and was organized for the benefit of the Mid Somerset CND campaign. Michael had to convince them by proving that it was profitable to be able to use the brand on the posters and took care of providing the money, to organize animations and to be in agreement with the authorities. This partnership led to the construction of a new « Pyramid Stage »: it was a permanent structure that served as a stable and animal feed during the winter months. It took two months to build it from telegraph poles and metal sheets. Michael Eavis finally donated about £ 20,000 to a very grateful CND and this is the first year the festival made a profit. 18,000 people gathered in front of New Order, Hawkwind, Taj Mahal, Aswad, or Gordon Giltrap and the tickets were sold for £8. The year 1982 is quite significant as the weather was deplorable: the highest precipitation recorded in a single day over 45 years were recorded on Friday... Performed: Van Morrison, Judie Tzuke, Jackson Browne, Roy Harper... Even if U2 was on the poster, the band did not play. 25,000 people were present.

As every year, the festival has continued to grow and additional equipment has been added as more means of communication and medical services. The theater and the children’s area were moved to new locations and the first tent dedicated to classical music was created. The stands were moved to the top of the site and £ 130,000 was raised, with more

THE 90’s
n the 90s, the festival changed its name and became the « Glastonbury Festival for Contemporary Performing Arts », to reflect the diversity of the events during the festival. It also marks the twentieth anniversary of the festival, which unfortunately ended with a clash between the security teams and the people who came to loot the site... 235 people were arrested and there was more than 50,000 pounds of damage on the property and the facilities... That year, progress was made on parkings, with parking professionals being deployed on-site to optimize space. Despite the unfortunate events, £ 100,000 was raised and donated to CND and other charities. 70,000 people were present with a ticket price of £ 38 and a £ 3 program. Performed: The Cure, Happy Mondays, Sinead O’Connor and World Party. This forced the organizers to rethink the organization of the festival and there was no edition held in 1991. In 1992, Greenpeace and
Oxfam were included in the event and received the profits with other associations amounting to £ 250,000. Indeed, Michael Eavis felt that with the end of the Cold War, people’s concerns had shifted from the possibility of facing nuclear war to environmental issues. Tickets and programs have both increased, being £ 49 for a seat and £ 4 for a program. Among the artists present: Carter USM, Shakespear’s sister, Primal Scream, PJ Harvey, Sawdoctors and The Levellers, with surprise guest: Tom Jones. 26 www.kylie-world.com
Subsequently, the festival’s success continued to grow, with tickets being sold-out before the event and the number of people growing up year by year. In 1993, 80,000 people came together to see The Orb, Lenny Kravitz, Velvet Underground, Galliano and Stereo Mcs. The tickets took a few more pounds, rising to £ 58. In 1994, a drama occurred a few days before the beginning of the festival: the Pyramid Stage burned in the early morning but fortunately, a local company managed to replace it. They also provided the stage for the NME and Jazz parts. That year also marks the first appearance of a wind turbine next to the main stage, providing 150 kW of power to cover the main stage area. A new world record was made on June 26th, when 826 people juggled with at least three items each, throwing a total of 2,478 items in the air. On a much more negative note, five people were gunshoted on Saturday night, fortunately without anyone being seriously injured. However, a young man was found dead from a drug overdose during the event: it was the first death in the history of festivals. Another highlight of 1994: Channel 4 broadcast the event live over the weekend to enhance the festival’s appeal to a bigger audience. £ 150,000 was donated to Greenpeace, £ 50,000 to Oxfam and just over £ 100,000 to local charities. 80,000 people were attended to the event and the tickets were sold at £ 59 and the program at £5. Here’s a little idea of the line-up: Bjork, Manic St Preachers, Orbital, Van Morrison, Lemonheads, Elvis Costello, Galliano and The Levellers. 1995 marks the 25th anniversary of the festival and was celebrated with artists attending the first event: Keith Christmas and Al
Stewart. The demand for seats had never been as intense as during this new edition and the tickets were sold-out in the month following their sale. It was also that year that a new scene made its appearance: the « Dance Tent » which was a real success, with as line-up: Massive Attack, System 7 and Eat Static. The event was unfortunately tainted by the removal of the perimeter fence at the top of the site, aggravated the intrusion problems for the other owners of the fields adjacent to the site. Note that Channel 4 has again broadcast the event and Greenpeace has received £ 200,000 donation, Oxfam £ 100,000 and local charity £ 100,000. 80,000 people came to applaud Cure, Oasis, Orbital, PJ Harvey, Simple Minds and Portishead with a £ 65 ticket and a £ 5 program. The following year, the festival did not take place in order to let the farmland rest, but a movie called « Glastonbury The Movie », which was filmed in 1993 and 1994, was released. The event was back in 1997, stronger than ever with renowned partners: The Guardian and the BBC. The festival was again broadcast on Channel 4 (and on BBC Radio 2) and 90,000 people were present to taste the joys of the mud: indeed, torrential rains fell on the site a few days before the beginning of the shows and the spectators have renamed this year: the year of the mud. That did not stop them from attending an incredible show of Radiohead, headliner, on the Pyramid Stage. Some say it’s one of the greatest performances ever at Glastonbury. Several live tracks have been recorded and compiled on a CD by the BBC, really well named « Mud For It ». Tickets were priced at £ 75 with the official program and the line-up included performances by 27 www.kylie-world.com
The Prodigy, Radiohead, Ray Davies Massive Attack or Sting. 1998 marked another muddy year following many floods and storms, but festival-goers who stayed there attended concerts by Pulp, Robbie Williams and Blur. More than 1000 performances on 17 different stages were offered to the spectators who had paid their ticket £ 80 (program included). The « Dance Tent » was expanded, a bank was deployed at the event venue and the weather conditions made surfing on the mud very popular that year! Note that this gloomy weather did not taint Tony Bennett’s costume or mood, since the artist performed on stage in a pristine white suit with a tie! 1998 also marks another event, the first time the festival has reached more than 100,000 people, and more than £ 500,000 was donated to Greenpeace, Oxfam, Water Aid and many local organizations. In 1999, the sun was back on Glastonbury and had chased mud, to the delight of organizers and festival-goers. As a precaution, £ 150,000 was spent to take the necessary precautions regarding bad weather. Once again, the festival expanded to include a wide range
Focus • Glastonbury of entertainment, with more than 300 bands, numerous plays, comedies and more than 250 food stalls and everything was broadcasted on Glastonbury website and on BBC Radio 2. Again this year, the festival exceeded 100,000 people and the event was again overcrowded because of people getting in by jumping the barriers (we can not do it so easily today, it’s a shame as there’s no more tickets for Kylie). Everything seemed to be going well, but unfortunately that year was overshadowed by a sad event: the death of the wife of Michael Eavis, the organizer of the festival. A sculpture was burned in her honor while fireworks exploded in the sky, lit by the moon.

Tickets, including the program, were £ 83. Here is a list of artists present: REM, Manic Street Preachers, Fatboy Slim, Hole, Blondie, Al Green, Skunk Anansie, Lonnie Donegan, Marianne Faithful and Courtney Pine.
THE 2000’S
he 2000s mark the return of the « Pyramid Stage » (the third in history) of more than 30 meters high and dressed in dazzling silver. An unusual event was organized on Saturday morning: two festival-goers who wrote to the organizers asked if they could get married in front of the stage. The application was accepted and the ceremony was held in front of
a small group by actor Keith Allen. A new place, called « The Glade » was inaugurated and was a real success, as well as new camping places that were created with a special spot dedicated to families. 100,000 people who had paid £87 each (program included) were expected to attend the performances of Chemical Brothers, Moby, Travis, Morcheeba, Basement Jaxx and David Bowie (among others), but many people once again managed to get in by jumping over the fence and a total of 250 000 spectators was accounted for. This raised many issues, particularly with the respect of the public safety, and the license to renew the festival was not been permitted until action would be taken to avoid this issue. Indeed, the same year an accident causing the death of nine people took place at the Roskilde Festival in 28 www.kylie-world.com
Denmark. As everyone ran to the stage, these people fell, failed to get up and died from suffocation after being crushed by the crowd. So the organizers of Glastonbury made the decision in 2001 (when the festival did not take place, to let the fields rest), to find a way to fight against people who enter illegally and avoid any incident. The festival was highly anticipated in 2002 for its comeback and was carefully prepared the year before. A steel fence repulsed the people who did not have tickets and the 140 000 people having paid 97 £, program included, were able to enjoy many performances including for the first time Coldplay on the « Pyramid Stage » but also Stereophonics, Manu Chao, Kosheen, Mis-teeq, Slim Fat Boy, Roger Waters and Rod Stewart, White Stripes, Orbital and Isaac Hayes. The tickets went on sale in February and sold in a few weeks. Some incidents, however, took Laeti, January 2K19
place outside the festival due to the fact that some people who did not own the tickets did not expect to find fences preventing them from attending the event for free. In 2003, more than 150,000 tickets were sold in less than 24 hours, at a single price of £ 105, including the program. This is the first year the festival is soldout even before the line-up is announced. The event was hailed as one of the best so far, with a perfect weather and a very relaxed atmosphere. On the program: Love with Arthur Lee, Damien Rice, Soul, Flaming Lips, Jimmy Cliff, Moby, Radiohead, REM, Damned, The Darkness, The Thrills... Revenue from ticket sales and commercial licenses reached the million pounds, half of which was donated to Oxfam, Greenpeace and Water Aid. There was also a massive demand for tickets in 2004 where they sold-out in less than 24 hours: this sale was quite controversial because the process did not work properly and many tried to connect for hours via internet and phone call. In fact, the site has count out more than 2 million login attempts within five minutes during the selling and an average of 2,500 people online every minute. The 150,000 people who managed to get their ticket for £ 112 (included program) applauded Paul McCartney, Muse, Oasis, James Brown, Joss Stone, Franz Ferdinand, Toots and the Maytals, Scissor Sisters, Black Eyed Peas, Sister Sledge , Television, Michael Franti and Spearhead, with a weather that was unfortunately not on the side of the festival, with strong winds that delayed entry and continued rains all Saturday, which turned the field into a giant mud field. The organization was however hailed and was one of the safest in the festival’s his-
tory and 32% of the waste was recycled, including 110 tonnes of composted organic waste. The watercourses and hedgerows have remained unpolluted and places to pee more easily were installed (and thanks god we know how important it is !). In addition, a million pounds was donated to Greenpeace, Water Aid, Oxfam and local charities, £ 100,000 has been given to the Sudan appeal. A contest for unsigned artists was launched and the « Pyramid Stage » experienced many shows, including the English National Opera, which has performed in front of 15,000 people. In 2005, the ticket rush continued and more than 153,000 tickets at £ 125 (including program) we sold in three hours and twenty minutes. The event spanned on more than 3.6 hectares with 385 shows. It was also that year that Kylie was supposed to sing at the festival as the Sunday headliner, but had to cancel her performance to follow her treatment against breast cancer. She was replaced by Basement Jaxx, who performed with Coldplay « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head ». Modifications took place and the « Dance Tent » was replaced by the « Dance Village » with eight different locations playing different types of dance music. A midnight cabaret and a ghost train were added to the circus corner, as well as fantastic sculptures that people really talked about! Following the death of DJ John Peel in the fall of 2004, the « New Tent » was renamed « John Peel Tent » as a tribute to his support and love for new bands in Glastonbury. The New Talent Contest was a huge success with thousands of attendees and more than 35 performances at various locations on the site. 2005 was also electric! Two months of rain fell in a few hours, which happens once... eve29 www.kylie-world.com
ry hundred years! Several stages, including the « Acoustic Tent » (and one of the bars) were hit by lightning and the valley by sudden floods. The campsite was flooded but everything went well for the people already present who were helped by local teams and some even took the opportunity to get into canoe! After these events, the Mendip District Council described this festival as one of the safest to date, and to the delight of everyone, the sun came out on Sunday. Festival-goers applauded Basement Jaxx, White Stripes, Magic Numbers, Coldplay, The Belly Dance Superstars, Razorlight, New Order, Brian Wilson, The Wailers, James Blunt, Beautiful South, Baaba Maal, The Babyshambles, The Killers, Steve Harleyand Cockney Rebel, Ska Cubano, KT Tunstall, Kaiser Chiefs, The Subways, Dave Chas, The La’s and Elvis Costello. Also in 2005, the festival is committed to fighting poverty: £1,350,000 was donated to charities and 50% of the waste was recycled. As every five years, the festival paused to let the fields rest. A documentary film directed by Julien Temple was published to compensate the absence of the event and includes footage filmed specifically for the film as well as others sent by fans and archive footage. 2007 was once again marked by mud and rain, but this year, no significant flood to note, the festival having invested over £ 750,000 in specific facilities to protect campers. However, these continuous rains during most of the festival have aggravated the general conditions of the site compared to previous years, this one looking more like muddy plains as in 1998 and it was difficult to find a place to sit where it there was no mud. The festival-goers had a great time with Bjork, ShirLaeti, January 2K19
Focus • Glastonbury ley Bassey, Iggy Pop, CSS, The Go Team, Amy Winehouse, MIA, Kate Nash, Billy Bragg, Corinne Bailey Rae, Damian Marley, Lily Allen and The Chemical Brothers. Note that the Arctic Monkeys (to who it was their first Glastonbury), The Killers and The Who were the headliners, and more than 700 performances were held on 80 scenes. A new stage was born: the « Park Stage », created by Emily Eavis, the daughter of Michael and the co-organizer of the event today. This place offered additional sets of artists already playing on the main stages, like Pete Doherty and Gruff Rhys. The BBC has also launched its « Introducing » stage. Once again, the 137,500 tickets sold at £ 145 were sold out really quickly, in less than an hour forty five minutes. To avoid illegal resale, buyers had to pre-register and present their photo, which the security printed on the ticket. The festival decided to support the « I Count » campaign, which highlighted the need to fight climate change. 70,000 people
people took part in the campaign during the weekend, 46% of the festival-goers present. In 2008, the sun was finally back for Glastonbury! For the first time in many years, not all the tickets were sold immediately, but the good weather motivated the festival-goers and many of them were bought at the last minute: the festival was sold out and counted 134,000 spectators who bought tickets at £ 155, program included. On the line-up : Jay-Z, an act that was controversial because some people found that he had not his place on the festival. Kings Of Leon, The Verve, Manu Chao, Massive Attack, Groove Armada, Steve Seasick, Lupe Fiasco, Mark Ronson, Dizzy Rascal, Ozomatli, Eddy Grant, Stanton Warriors, Natty, Dr. Meaker, Fun Loving Criminals, The National, Tunng and Laura Marling were also on the list. A new stage adjacent to the « Sacred space » and « Park Stage » has been opened, without name. The festival-goers called it « Flagtopia », in reference to the many flags that were present. After the large number of tents on the ground in 2007 and the death of one of Michael Eavis’s cows after ingesting a metal stake left in the ground, the festival designed its Love the Farm campaign which encouraged partygoers to respect the environment and clean themselves. Moreover, biodegradable tent
30 www.kylie-world.com
tent poles were distributed free to all campers! These new efforts were rewarded with the 2008 Greener Festival Award alongside a number of other festivals also engaged as environmentally friendly music festivals. Two people who were working for Glastonbury died before this new edition: Arabella Churchill, who was in charge of theater and circus at the end of 2007, and Pat VT West, who organized the Poetry & Words tent, two weeks before the festival. In 2009, 137,500 tickets were put on sale a little early, on October 5th, festival-goers could either pay their ticket at once or pay a deposit of £ 50 before paying the rest (£ 175 total ). Two months before the festival, everything was complete. A few storms happened during the event but the most significant moment was when festival-goers got to know about the death of Michael Jackson. Many tributes were multiplied throughout the weekend. On stage: Blur, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, The Prodigy, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Jarvis Cocker, Fairport Convention (who played at the first Glastonbury Festival), Tom Jones, Steel Pulse, Doves, Lady Gaga, Jason Mraz, Nick Cave, Pete Doherty, Hugh Cornwell, Status Quo, The Gaslight Anthem, Madness, Dizzee Rascal, Crosby, Nash & Stills, Lily Allen, Kasabian and Florence and the Machine. The festival has supported many causes and supported the White Ribbon Alliance’s Million Mums campaign. Sarah Brown and Naomi Campbell, both ambassadors visited the festival to provide support. More than 10,000 signatures were collected for the benefit of the campaign. Michael Eavis later qualified 2009 as the best Glastonbury festival to date. Laeti, January 2K19

The 135,000 tickets sold for £ 185 were ripped off in less than 24 hours and the weather was pretty good, with hot days and quite mild nights. A second permanent water reservoir was built, both containing about a million liters of drinking water, needed with a very hot weather. On the site a display reminiscent of Hollywood letters stating « Glastonbury 40 » was put up on the hills of the festival. Two new areas have been created in the festival’s nightlife: the Common Ground and Unfair Ground. Sunday, the defeat of the English footballers at the World Cup has a little spoil the day: two fields with their own giant screens were set up and 80 000 spectators attended the game. Regarding performances, U2 was forced to cancel, Bono being injured in the back, and Gorillaz replaced them. There was also Muse, Stevie Wonder(who ended the concert by singing happy birthday to the festival with Michael Eavis), Shakira, Scissor Sisters (with the surprise appearance of Kylie!) or Pet Shop Boys, Florence and the Machine, Groove Armada, Mumford & Sons,
The XX and Fatboy Slim, Plan B, Kelis and Tinie Tempah. Note that a bridge dedicated to the memory of Arabella Churchill was built the same year. Before the traditional break year to let the fields rest, the festival once again worked very well, with 135,000 tickets sold for £ 195 in less than 4 hours. The rain has made its return, especially for the performance of U2 on Friday night. Among the other stars, Coldplay and Beyoncé, becoming the first woman to perform as headliner since 1999. More than two million pounds have been raised for WaterAid, Greenpeace, Oxfam and other good local charity. The festival did not take place in 2012 which was not a drama because there was a shortage of portable toilets (it was at the time of the Olympic Games) and the weather was catastrophic, Glastonbury could have been canceled because of these conditions. Registration for 2013 tickets began in June 2011 and the reservation opened in October 2012. Once again, sales broke a new record, with tickets being sold in an hour and forty minutes. This new year has exceeded all expectations with as line-up the Rolling Stones, Arc31 www.kylie-world.com
tic Monkeys or Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, Rita Ora and Bastille. The broadcast of the festival by the BBC reached record and was even nominated for the BAFTA awards! Many improvements were made, including drainage and water supply, increasing the number of toilets and improving roads. In 2014 there were three great headliners: Metallica, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, and someone you know well now: Dolly Parton. The announcement for Dolly was made when the event won the best festival award at the NME Awards in London in February. Thanks to a rather mild weather, Glastonbury has recorded a new record of direct donations made to partner charities: Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid. Unfortunately, a 26-year-old man has died, suspected of overdosing on drugs. It should also be noted that the Mendip District Council has licensed the festival for the next 10 years until 2024. 2015 marked the 45th anniversary of the festival, with, as a surprise announcement, the performance of Lionel Richie. nd the announcement finally happened a few days before Christmas: Kylie Minogue will sing at the Pyramid Stage next June and will be the headliner of the «Legend Slot» on Sunday afternoon. After being forced to cancel her performance at the famous festival in 2005 to get treatment for breast cancer and be replaced by Basement Jaxx and Coldplay who made a cover of « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » , and having made an appearance on the same stage alongside Scissors Sisters in 2010 for « Any Which Way », the singer will finally have the stage for herself. The announcement was done by Emily Eavis, the daughter of Michael, co-organizer of the festival who said she was delighted that Kylie would be present: «We cannot wait!» Several artists have already appeared on this famous slot, such as Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Elo, Barry Gibb, Shirley Bassey or Paul Simon. Kylie announced: « I’m so thrilled to announce that I’ll be playing the ‘Legend slot’ on Sunday 30th June
at Glastonbury 2019. It will be 14 years since I was originally meant to appear there and so much has happened up to now. I can’t wait to see you all there to share this special show ». Well, Kylie has forgotten something is that the tickets are sold-out since the day of sale, but a resale is organized in April on the website of the festival. Feel free to sign up if you want to have a chance to have a ticket !

Lily Allen and Chris Martin from Coldplay joined the band to play a few songs. 2016 is considered another memorable year for the festival, with as headliners : Muse, Adele and Coldplay. In 2017, the BBC announced that it has renewed its broadcasting rights until 2022. Radiohead, Foo Fighter and Ed Sheeran were the festival’s headliners. The event will make a big comeback this year, in 2019.

When we talk about a new year, we obviously think about good resolutions for the upcoming months. But we also think back to what happened in the past year and all the good times we’ve had. Although this new year promises to be quite busy for Kylie, we have decided to have a look back on 2018 which has marked the career of the singer, with many projects and Golden moments.
2018 A GOLDEN YEAR FOR KYLIE
JANUARY We didn’t have to wait too long in 2018 to have good news: on January 10th, after the leak on social medias of a newsletter announcing that Kylie would do some promo in France for her new album « Golden », which the release was scheduled for early spring of the same year, she confirmed these rumors announcing: « Lovers… It’s true. We have GOLDEN times ahead!!! I can’t wait to share new music with you » on her Twitter account. We already knew that the release of a first single was pretty close, with a new country music style and similar to the track of Rita Ora, « Anywhere ». The media announced that the song was called « Dancing », and on January 13th, a snippet already leaked on the internet. Many rumors about the release date of the single and how it will be announced have been then posted. All we knew was that Kylie was coming to France on January 16th and 17th. On January 19th, « Dancing » was unveiled to the public following the various leaks on the internet. The track has got mixed opinions within the community of fans, some enjoying this new genre, others not at all. Kylie was very proud of the song, which reminds us that life is not a quiet river and we must enjoy the good times. Although the track was very well ranked in the charts, it struggled to stay at a good position over the weeks. On January 22nd, the singer came back to Paris to attend several fashion week shows, including those of Schiaparelli and Ralph & Russo, before going back to London to be present at the birthday of Jools Holland.
February The month begun with the release of the « Dancing » music video, directed by Sophie Muller. It includes a tribute to Dolly Parton (if anyone still does not know about who is she right now, you must have been far away from
earth when Kylie did her interviews) and was shot at the London Bush Hall. We see the singer with a pretty green dress in a Nashville motel room that reminds us of the 70s. By the way, the guitar you can spot in the video was found in a flea market for £12 and crystals were added on it after. Kylie confessed in many interviews that the choreography she is doing is called « line dance » and was quite complicated to learn at the beginning because it was different from what she was used to do. In 24 hours, the music video of « Dancing » ranked number 1 on iTunes UK and was trending on Youtube. The cover of the album was revealed and the different packs containing the album and the 7’’ vinyl version of the lead single were published so people can start to pre-order it. We could also order the first stuff from the merchandising, which at the end, did not change much later. The remixes of the single were released and there were three: the Anton Powers one, with a radio edit version and the one of Initial Talk. February also brought us another good news: the singer will perform in intimate venues to present her new album. Five cities were chosen: London, Manchester, Barcelona, Paris and Berlin. Needless to say, the sale was still catastrophic and when you managed to get a ticket, you were really lucky.

The singer also attended the Formula E Grand Prix in Santiago, Chile, to delight all her fans who were happy to take some pictures with her. The last time Kylie went there was ten years ago, as part of her « X Tour ». On February 21st, she attented the Brit Awards. If we all hoped that she would sing her new track, Kylie finally made a brief appearance at the beginning of the ceremony to present the award of the « Best British Female Artist », given to Dua Lipa. Two days later, the dates of her tour in England and Ireland were unveiled. The singer has also performed live « Dancing » nearly a month after the release of her single on a TV show called Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.
MARch On March 9th, a new single from « Golden » was released: « Stop Me From Falling ». She then went on the road for a week for her promo tour « Kylie Presents Golden », which was a real success with fans! We really felt that the singer enjoyed her new songs in this much more intimate atmosphere. Kylie also took the opportunity to record a music video to promote « Stop Me From Falling » in Paris, which was released on March 29th exclusively on Apple Music. On March 21st, we learned that Sigala had recorded a track with the singer the previous year, which was originally planned for her new album but with the new direction of this opus, the song was not kept. Several performances were made : on March 22nd in London as part of a concert for Spotify, on March 25th in Macau where the singer played a few tracks for the opening of the MGM Cotai, a new luxury hotel, and on March 26th in Hong Kong for the amFAR Gala. Kylie was supposed to go to Australia so her fans there could see the « Kylie Presents Golden » concert, but unfortunately the singer had to cancel it due to a throat infection. On March 31st, Kylie released the album version of « Raining Glitter » after the success of the song during the promo tour. 35 www.kylie-world.com

Focus • 2018, a golden year for Kylie of the track, with the presence of Gente De Zona, and personally, we love it! On April 21st, she attended the Queen’s 92th birthday, where she performed her new single « Stop Me From Falling ». She then moved to the United States, first to New York on iHeartRadio and on the Late Night show with Seth Mayer before doing some other promos, including Good Morning America. She flew to Los Angeles where she gave a small concert at the Palm Springs’ White Party. We finish this busy month by mentioning the DVD release of the movie « Swinging Safari ».
MAY At the beginning of the month was broadcasted the show « BBC Sounds Like Friday » where Kylie performed « Stop Me From Falling » and for the first time on a TV show « Radio On ». April was probably one of the busiest months of On May 28th, Kylie celebrated her 50th birthday. She then has done many performances, including one on April 7th at G-A-Y, the famous London club where she sang 6 songs or at The One Show, before going to Germany for the « Echo Awards » and « Let’s Dance ». During a break in Berlin, Kylie did a Facebook Live and answered to the questions from her fans with the help of Sean (and we loved that moment!). The singer was back on The Voice, 4 years later, alongside Tom Jones to coach the contestants, and a new concert in London (the third one) was announced. She has also released a new collection of glasses in collaboration with Specsavers which contains nine new models. On April 19th, a second video for « Stop Me From Falling » was unveiled. JUNE June was also a busy month in terms of events. Kylie first started on the 3rd by joining Nick Cave on stage to sing « Where The Wild Roses Grow » at Victoria Park in London as part of her tour. On the 14th, she was with the Prince William for the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, which is looking for solutions and treatments to fight cancer. The next morning, Kylie went to BBC Radio 2 to perform four live tracks, including « Islands In The Stream ». She also announced that she would headline the radio festival in Hyde Park in September. On June 16th, the singer was the surprise guest of the « Dine And Disco », a charity gala of Children In Need where she interpreted an acoustic version of « Stop Me From Falling ». Head to the south of France now, and Cannes, where Kylie took part of the Cannes Lions night, a ceremony honoring advertisers, at the Château De Garibondy. She interpreted her classics there for the pleasure of those present who sang the tracks with her. Kylie then flew to the United States where she gave a concert on June 24th at the New York Pride, an hour-long concert that thunderstorms threatened but that finally took place. Note that the microphone of the singer did not turn on when she began to sing... For the second part of the show, Kylie wore a dress with the colors of the LGBT flag, which was loved by everyone! The next day, she gave a second concert, this
time where she presented the tracks of her album to the American audience. Little surprise, the singer performed « New York City » for the first time live; and even twice cause the track has been so successful!
JULY The month of July began with the appearance of Kylie at the 30th anniversary of Vogue magazine. Many people spoke of this event because it was the first time that Andres Velencoso had been seen again next to Kylie since their breakup. They have also remained quite close as we have seen in the photos, and it reminded us of good memories! Kylie performed « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » in Madrid. On July 13th, after being back from Spain, Kylie went to the O2 Arena where she was invited by the Muppets. « Mahna Mahna » and « Rainbow Connection » were sung by our Australian girl, who was joined by David Tennent (who plays Doctor Who) on this last track. The next day, Steps band was at their side. On July 21st, Kylie was back on the set of The Voice, not as a coach this time but as an artist, to perform her brand new single, « Golden ». And finally, on July 25th, Kylie was in Italy, in Venice to join on stage Jack Savoretti for the last show of his tour « Acoustic Nights Tour » and perform « Music’s Too Sad Without You ». The two artists also took the opportunity to shoot the music video of the track at the same time, a music video that came out a little later. 37 www.kylie-world.com
Note also that it was in July that Kylie announced that she would go on tour in Europe, the selling of the tickets took place a few days later. Laeti, January 2K19

AUGUST The month of August was very quiet and not much happened!
SEPTEMBER We begin the month of September with Kylie, who, accompanied by her darling Paul Solomons, went to the GQ Awards in London. For those who do not remember or do not know, Paul is the magazine’s creative director. The big event was the concert in Hyde Park, London, with BBC Radio 2. The singer was headlining the festival and Lenny Kravitz, Rita Ora and Boyzone have performed during the afternoon before the appearance of Kylie, around 8pm. We were finally able to discover the versions that were going to be sung during the « Golden Tour » and the singer invited on stage artists who are also her friends for our biggest pleasure : Rick Astley with whom she sang « Never Gonna Give You Up » and Jason Donovan for « Especially For You », who had just come to see the singer... With his bicycle ! September 18th marked the launch of the « Golden Tour » in Newcastle, for 14 dates across England and Ireland. The track with Sigala « What You Are Waiting For » also came out the same month on the album of the artist and DJ.
OCTOBER The month of October began with the cancellation of the « Golden Tour » concerts on the 7th and 8th in Dublin and Belfast. Kylie was suffering of a throat infection again, preventing her from singing. The concerts were postponed until December. On October 15th, the video of « Music’s Too Sad Without You » shot in Venice with Jack Savoretti was unveiled. On October 22nd, the singer went to a gala evening for the 70th anniversary of Prince Charles: « We Are Most Amused And Amazed » which brings together the best artists of the moment. Kylie was expected for a short speech and a special appearance at the end, before being greeted by Prince Charles behind the scenes. On October 28th, she made an appearance on X Factor, where she performed « A Lifetime To Repair ». 38 www.kylie-world.com
Laeti, January 2K19
NOVEMBER Early November, Kylie appeared alongside Paul at the Harper’s Bazaar Woman Of The Year Awards at the Claridge Hotel in London, where she won the « Icon Of Music » award from Nick Cave. On November 6th, Kylie’s tour in Europe was supposed to start in Luxembourg. Unfortunately the date had to be canceled due to scheduling problems (as announced by the production). So it’s in Brussels that Kylie started this new leg, with much smaller stages and some changes in the setlist. She also decided to change her costume at each concert opening. Two new tours were announced: one in Australia and another one this summer in Europe: the « Kylie Summer Tour ». On November 10th, she sang with Jack Savoretti on the set of Jonathan Ross in England, to promote « Music’s Too Sad Without You », a new excerpt from « Golden ». On November 25th, after finishing her European tour, the singer was supposed to perform one or two track on the « Magic Of Christmas » show, alongside many artists. Unfortunately, this performance had to be canceled because Kylie suffered from a throat infection and had trouble finishing the concert in Hamburg the day before.
DECEMBEr At the beginning of December, Kylie finished her tour with the last two shows in Ireland, where she offered a beer to all the fans in possession of the tickets thanks to a partnership with Guinness. And for Christmas, Kylie posted a photo of her with Paul, what a good way to end the year! 39 www.kylie-world.com

Brit Awards • Where is Kylie ?
This is the topic that has been the most talked about in the fan community in the recent days: Kylie has unfortunately not been nominated for the « Best International Artist » category for the Brit Awards. This ceremony, which has rewarded our Australian many times and which has seen her perform really often, has been heavily criticized on social medias. However, it did not surprise myself at all. Here’s why.
Why Kylie Minogue was not nominated for the Brit Awards 2019 For those who do not know it, it will now be ten years since I started working in the music industry, more particularly in a radio station, as a music scheduler. To explain it simply, it’s me who decides if a track is played on my radio or not. When we have to make this choice, of course our personal criteria have a strong influence on it (yes, I still schedule Kylie’s tracks), but it’s not a question of making a playlist for myself, but rather for people who listen to it, and that will be considered as my target listeners. For example, on my radio « Hits », which is more similar to BBC Radio 1 or Capital FM, my target audience is between 20 and 35 years old. It’s quite wide, but I only played Kylie’s « Dancing » track a few times. The song did not match my audience and could not have been more broadcasted because I also have to consider the tracks that work on other radios and sales of singles. So, Kylie was playlisted for about a month. On another radio - more adult and qualitative that I schedule, our Australian stayed longer and was broadcasted also more often. The target is older (and similar to BBC Radio 2) and was working better on my audience. So you’re going to tell me that it has nothing to do with the main topic. Well, it is kinda similar. The people who schedule the tracks do not do what they want and the same goes for the awards. You have to be careful with several criteria, and even more than you think about for a ceremony. Of course the main criteria as you can imagine is the album sales. Kylie has sold more than 139,000 records in England, making her (if I’m not wrong) the second international woman to have sold the most albums, right after Ariana Grande. Not to mention that her cassette ranked first, her album also stayed at this position for a few
days... In short, if you are reading it like that, of course Kylie deserves to be nominated. But unfortunately, sales are not doing everything. Radio broadcasts also count, as streaming do (2K19 you know). And for once, we can not say that the radios have really playlisted the tracks of our Australian, apart from a few adult formats, including BBC Radio 2 which has always supported her. To be honest with you, especially the French people, you probably know radios like NRJ and if you wonder why they do not play Kylie, the answer is: because she is too old. Yes really. You can tell me: but she did the promo on Fun Radio which is also a young radio! Yes, it’s internal arrangements because some people from their team are fans of her and the deal was to add the track to the playlist of the radio in exchange of her coming there. Result? The track was played a total of 9 times: half of which was made during the show she was invited to and the night. I don’t have to tell you that this promo was useless, it is clearly not the audience of Fun Radio who will buy Kylie’s albums. Now that you see that there are many arrangements, I will explain another part of my job, which is to book artists for interviews. Of course, we will not have Madonna or Kylie like that. We must start by establishing a relation based on trust and take « small » artists so that we can eventually hope to get bigger ones from the same labels. It works by making exchanges with record companies, it’s a bit of bartering actually: I take you that, you give me that and I get you this track on the playlist etc. It’s endless but it’s like that and it’s also logical. So, it’s the same thing for the ceremonies. When you want a big artist, you
40 www.kylie-world.com
Laeti, January 2K19
will have to check with the record company what you can do to invite him and you may need to agree to schedule a « smaller » aka less popular one, kinda like a package deal. And it’s probably the same for nominations, maybe that’s why Kylie was not chosen. In fact, I will be able to continue for a loooong time on all these details, which can, to you as an audience, seem totally unfair and it is normal. But the music business is unfair, just like other businesses. This is a particular industry and many people act as lobbies for their own interests. Even if you are the main consumer in the music industry and it is YOU, above all, who make the artists live, I know that sometimes you are not feeling it at all in these ceremonies. In the category « Best International Artist » are nominated: Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Christine And The Queens and Janelle Monae. Mainstream music for the first three ones and more qualitative one for the next two. I must admit, however, that I am surprised by the nomination of Janelle Monae just as I was surprised that Rita Ora and Dua Lipa are not nominated in the category « Best British Female Artist »... Now we just have to hope that Kylie will be invited
to the ceremony and will have a « Lifetime Achievement Award », which would reward her entire career and this award for once have all the criteria : great sales of albums, a real career and a strong fan community, always there to support her !

The singer had also declared that it was one of her most difficult photoshoots but she was delighted with the result.

KYLIE AND PAUL TOGETHER
K
ylie decided to wish us a Merry Christmas by posting a picture of her and her darling Paul Solomons in each other’s arms with an elf costume for the end of year festivities. The photo went around all the press, but many missed the one of Paul, who for the New Year chose to post his best photos of 2018, consisting mainly of images of Kylie that we had never seen! To see these pictures in better quality, go to Paul’s Instagram (@paulsolomonsgq).
I
t’s a weird story. At the beginning of January, a suspicious package created panic at the Norwegian embassy in France, which led to the intervention of security forces and the Paris police demining service. It was an A5 envelope, containing a suspicious object inside. On the parcel, the name of Kylie Minogue, and inside, paper sheets of helicopter model kits and... a plastic ladybug! Let us tell you that the police left as fast as they arrived... However, an investigation was opened to determine the origin of this one, which came from France.
RUMORS According to several rumors, the DVD of the « Golden Tour » should be released in March, just after the dates of the singer in Australia. The images were already in postproduction after the European tour, so the DVD should be finished soon! We can not wait to have it in our hands to remember the show! 42 www.kylie-world.com

According to an article published on July 13th, 2009, on 67mustangblog.com Kylie’s dad, Ron Minogue, allegedly bought a fake Shelby GT500 and sued the person who sold it to him... Here’s the story.
KYLIE MINOGUE’s father
sues over fake shelby gt500
It’s a little known fact that Kylie Minogue‘s father Ron is an avid Mustang enthusiast. But the man with the famous daughters is actually a life member of the Victoria Mustang Owners Club. So you would assume he knows his Mustangs. But unfortunetly Ron appears to have been taken for $180,000 Australian Dollars on a 1968 Mustang he thought was a GT500 but all is not what it seems. In 2008 Ron purchased the Candy Apple Red Car for $180,000 from a Shannons Auction. The car was sold as a genuine 1968 Shelby GT500, number 00635. A documented ex-promotional vehicle out of Dearborn, Michigan one of only 1020 built in 1968 and a classic collector’s item modified by Carroll Shelby. Though all was not right when Ron brought it home with court documents filed in the Victorian County Court reportedly claiming identification marks had been removed or tampered with on the engine and the original restoration work was « of poor quality, incomplete and done to disguise the
fact this is not a genuine Shelby ». The vehicle was billed as a « blue-chip muscle car » and it fetched the highest price at the inaugural Brisbane International Motor Show auction last year when Mr Minogue bought it. Though the seller, Brad Allen, claims he has been duped as well: « If what he (Mr Minogue) is saying is true, then I am just as much a victim as he is », he said. He had bought the Mustang through a Sydney dealer three years ago, believing it to be a Shelby Mustang, and had not done any work on it. Mr Allen says he will fight claims he defrauded the superstar’s father. Whatever the case, it will be interesting to follow this one. Here is the alleged fake backstory : « Documented by the Shelby American Registry, this 1968 GT500 has build number 00635 and started life in Dearborn, Michigan as a Ford promotional vehicle. The car ended up in New York by the early 1970s and remained with the one 43 www.kylie-world.com
owner until being sold to the present owner in 2005, whereupon it was imported into Australia. The Shelby underwent a total restoration in the mid-1990s to concours standard and has been rarely driven ever since – it has 83,000 miles showing. The vehicle comes with a long list of optional equipment, including the wheel lip moldings, tilt-away steering column, extra cooling package and the Interior Decor Group, AM radio, tacho and trip odometer. The car sits on a set of desirable 10-spoke Shelby cast aluminium 15-inch rims. Although the Marti report accompanying the car indicates it has saddle interior, this is incorrect – the door data tag indicates that ‘00635’ has always been black inside. The Shelby also comes with the original warranty plate and owner’s manual. To be sold unregistered ». We don’t know what were the consequences of this case, but what is certain is that the Shelby of her dad has recently became famous among Kylie’s fans thanks to the song « Shelby’68 »!
