Hiyaaaaaa lovers !

Who would have thought we would have that many news for this month’s edition of the Kylie Times? Not us, that’s for sure! We were not expecting many news regarding Kylie this month, as the singer is still taking a break before going back on the road with the Golden Tour in Australia next month and yet... Between Mark Ronson who wants to write for her, the stalker who threatened her, the fact that she was back in the studio, a musical with SAW, the « Be Cool Be Nice » campaign, the announcement that she will headline the Brighton Pride, the Australia Day Honours List and her photo with Dolly Parton, the least we can say is that we have been spoiled! In this edition, you will also find Isa’s focus on « Word Is Out », as well as two interviews, the one from the Australian edition of Marie-Claire magazine and a podcast by Madeleine Spencer for « Beauty Full Lives ». We’ve added all the press articles about Kylie we’ve seen and of course the usual sections, with the best tweets we found and the famous Kylie Reactions! Enjoy x Laeti and Isa

word is out In May 1991, Matt Aitken left Stock Aitken Waterman, so SAW became S&W. His departure presented an ‘opportunity’ for a change of direction for the hitmakers. And of course, that change of direction impacted on Kylie’s fourth studio album « Let’s Get To It » that was released later that year, in October. The lead single from this new album, « Word Is Out » was released on 28th August 1991 in the UK, and unfortunately it didn’t have as much success as Kylie’s previous singles, and for PWL, having a brand new Kylie single charting so low was disastrous… It was « the beginning of the end » for them as the French would say. I just can’t believe that in a few months « Word Is Out » will be 28 years old!

Focus • Word Is Out Matt Aitken left Stock Aitken and Waterman because he felt he was « burn-out ». The media were all over them all the time, constantly questioning their musical integrity and speculating about their crumbling empire… More importantly though, Aitken left because, as he said it himself « People say all our records sound the same, but it came to a point where they sounded all the same to me ». After he left, the once invincible SAW was no more: Stock & Waterman continued for a few months but it was never really the same.

Just for your information (like « Hand On Your Heart » and several « Rhythm Of Love » tracks) many of the new songs from « Let’s Get To It » were initially mixed in 12” form before - in most cases - being edited down to a more album-friendly length.

Talking to Smash Hits about her new album she said a lot of her new songs were pretty different « Everything from band swing stuff to a more soulful kind of thing ». She wanted to experiment with new musical styles and was keen to take her music in a totally different direction: less pop and sexier R’n’B.

Matt Aitken

*** After the success of « Rhythm Of Love », many observers may have anticipated that a fourth album would surface on a different label, but instead, Kylie stayed at PWL (well, she still had contractual obligations with them anyway) and wanted to work with Mike Stock and Pete Waterman on her new album. There were conditions to that though: Kylie requested to be able to write songs with them for the first time, and she had also specified that maybe she would record tracks elsewhere, just like she had done for « Rhythm Of Love ». It turned out that she didn’t record anywhere else in the end, but at least she had secured the option, and she ended up co-writing six tracks. Even though it’s hard to believe, it’s true: the writing and recording of Kylie’s new album was already underway before she even started promoting « Shocked » !

Two other factors (in addition to the fact that Aitken had left SAW) were responsible for Kylie’s change of style in her new album. • First of all, the PWL label (and pop music in general actually) embraced the fresh dance energy that was dominating the clubs at the time. New Jack Swing, combined with hip-hop and dance productions with contemporary R&B songwriting would be a key influence, along with harder club sounds of the underground rave scenes. • Secondly, at the time - as you probably all know Kylie was clubbing a lot and getting more and more fascinated by club music, so she really wanted that to be reflected in her music and her image. Kylie confirmed this herself : « I was immersing myself in clubland culture and would dance at Subterania (London night club/venue), among other places, in my slashed John Galliano skirt, until the place closed. It was more than going down to the

local disco; I felt that I lived in London and was part of it, and was influenced by the music, the clubs themselves, the people in the clubs and the fashion coming out of it ».

In parallel, Tony King (who worked for PWL from 1987 to 1994) remixed the single, making the « Summer Breeze Mix » - a version that is a bit more mellow and takes the track in a more piano-house direction. In Australia, Mushroom really preferred this version, deeming it was a more comfortable follow-up single to « Shocked », and they issued a 7” edit of the remix in place of the original version… It was a good decision because for the first time since « Got To Be Certain », this single performed better in her homeland than in the UK!

Why didn’t this single work as well as previous singles? Well, of course people have different opinions (as always): • Maybe it was perceived as a big step backwards after her brilliant singles issued from « Rhythm Of Love »; • Maybe it was because of the video (Kylie was too sexed-up); • Maybe the change (sound and image) was too radical…; • Maybe fans considered that the sound didn’t fit Kylie that well at the time; *** • The song sounded like an « Enjoy Yourself » reject; • It was a weak song and/or a bad choice for a lead « Word Is Out », was recorded at London’s PWL single; studios and indeed it marked a major stylistic depar- • It’s because of the lack of TV promo for the single ture from Kylie’s previous singles. It featured music by « The Phantom Horns » which is a music band composed of Gary Barnacle at the saxophone, Pete Thoms at the trombone and John Thirkell at the trumpet, and also backing vocals courtesy of English singer, songwriter and actor Lance Ellington. However, as said, the single didn’t do so well in the United Kingdom. Worse than that actually, it was THE single that brought Kylie’s record-breaking run of Top 10 hits to an abrupt end – ouch !

11 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, February 2K19

Focus • Word Is Out Kylie herself admitted to Number One magazine The B-Side to the single is the gorgeous ballad « Say that she had been nervous about the track’s less The Word - I’ll Be There », one of the six tracks that pop/dance direction. « This tune is quite different, Kylie co-wrote. It had been recorded in June 1991. it’s swing beat, big band » she said. « It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before, so I’m a little evasive about the CHARTS release. It’s a great song, but it’s just so different! ». • The single climbed no higher than #16 in the UK, « Word Is Out » managed to become « Single of and as said it was the first time a Kylie release failed the fortnight » in Smash Hits but the fans weren’t to make the UK Top 10! convinced. Indeed, Kylie’s image was getting sexier and sexier and, by the time the single’s promo video • The « Summer Breeze Mix » did better in Australia, was premiered, people were paying less attention it peaked at number 10, becoming Kylie’s tenth single to her music and more to the fact that she was now to chart within the Top 10 there. (really too) « raunchy ». • In the Irish chart singles, it reached number 8. When interviewed and questioned about this song and era in 2017 by guyslikeu.com, Pete WaterTHE VIDEO man said : The video was directed by James Lebon, who was « Kylie always wanted to move on with eve(he passed away in December 2008) a British film ry album. « Word is Out » was great but her and music video director. He worked with stars like image at the time didn’t work with it. Kylie Bomb The Bass, Erasure, and Right Said Fred. dressed as a lady of the night down a dark alley just wasn’t for her. That was Dannii’s thing… It was filmed in and around the back streets of What we didn’t know is that if an artist is as London’s Camden Lock Market and in the alleys at big as Kylie you can’t suddenly change directhe back of the PWL studios, during night time in Aution. The public won’t get it. Especially when gust 1991. they have known her for 4 years on TV… ». When the single came out he had already said he felt that Kylie was not longer interested in making pop records for her public but for herself instead (so I think it’s safe to say he didn’t like what Kylie was doing during this era, right?).

The video is like a singing and dancing extravaganza with a coquettish and sassy Kylie, playing a streetwise temptress wearing either an outrageous see-through dress (wearing only underwear underneath) or the famous slashed skirt with a bustier. She looks hot as fire, but maybe a bit too much… She’s first singing and walking, with two female friends behind her (who are also wearing way too much make-up and are dressed-up just as sexy as her), before running behind a small wall to play hide and seek with 3 guys: 2 of them are wearing suits, the other one has a gangster look. The video is supposed to take place in a kind of « ghetto ». 12 www.kylie-world.com

so did she adopt the « hooker » look on purpose? William Baker in Lalala book:

She’s then dancing (a sexy but kind of « funky cool » choreography) with two black guys in the street, while the ‘gangster’ and her two girlfriends are watching her.

« Kylie tried her best to inject life into « Word Is Out », but the song wore hooves and Kylie, expressing all her creative frustrations with her image, took the hi-camp glamour of « What Do I Have To Do » and « Shocked » to extremes of butch/femme drag in the video, with her hair set in semi-wave, tons of black eyeliner and a split Galliano skirt and bustier ensemble, revealing a stockinged leg ». When commenting on this video, Waterman (who had only been involved with the videos made for her first five or six singles, after which it was completely up to her what she wanted to do) said : « Dressing up as a prostitute wouldn’t have been my choice and the public seemed to understand that as well because, once they saw it, her popularity just fell away ».

We then see intercut scenes where it’s the girls dancing and men watching first, then it’s the other way around, then they’re all dancing at the same In case you didn’t know and have never seen it, the time. Needless to say the video hit the headlines, but in a way it seemed like Kylie was deliberately provoking that. She was getting more and more irritated by the press’ obsession with her changing image and their inability to let go of her cute Girl Next Door persona,

If you read the last edition of The Kylie Times, you’ll already know that the pictures that were used for the physical releases of this single were taken by Ellen Von Unwerth. The photoshoot took place in The Grand Hotel of The Champs Elysées, but these particular pics were taken on one of the rooms’ balconies.

13 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, February 2K19

Focus • Word Is Out The photoshoot actually happened months before the release of « Word Is Out » and even before « Shocked » was released as a single. Kylie was dressed in pink gingham - from the Azzedine Alaïa spring 1991 collection.

I still wonder why they used these « Shocked » era pictures for this new single, coming from an entirely new album.

INTERVIEW EXCERPTS « You have to be pretty tough (when you’re famous), I mean just talking about newspaper articles there’s so much rubbish written in the papers and a lot of it is for the sake of sensationalism and is just there to give you a hard time ». « Yes being a popstar and being in the papers sort of go hand in hand but I don’t think that they should. I mean people say « well you should accept that, it’s part of what you do », unfortunately it is but there’s no reason why it should be, but, I cope ».

CRITICS • Michael Wilton’s, from musicOMH (London-based online music magazine) did a review of the second night of Kylie’s Anti Tour in Sydney, where she performed an acappella rendition of the song and stated that « Word is Out » was « wildly underrated ». • During a Kylie special on an Australian music video program called Rage, they stated: « While in the past, her material had always been high energy, « Word Is Out » showcased a far more seductive side to Kylie that many had suspected was there ». • Chris True from AllMusic chose the track as one of the track picks of the album « Let’s Get to It ». • On the other hand, Nick Griffiths from Select called it one of the odd songs in the « Let’s Get To It » album.

Kylie interviewed on Going Live!

« If I’m having a bad day, I’ll probably go to the movies or call up friends or go out, just try to not think about what’s bothering me ». « If I had one burning ambition in a day off, other than go shopping, I would go to a tropical island somewhere ». « It’s nice to have a relationship as a very personal thing, you don’t want everyone, first thing knowing about it, secondly they don’t really know about it, they think they know everything but in actual fact they know next to nothing about the way you feel, about each other, about yourself, about anything ». « The fact that I’ve changed my image had made me jumpy because of the questions I’m being asked by people. I mean, what’s all this rubbish about my loss of innocence? I don’t know what they mean. I have a certain degree of innocence; I’m not a sex kitten or a vixen. People are saying that Kylie is no longer a nice girl, which is not true… I have a chance now to act and portray myself the way I want to. If people don’t like it, that’s fine by me ».

14 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, February 2K19

« I’m happier now with my looks than ever before and that’s because it’s me making my own decisions. You know, now, I’m not going to stand on a train for « Locomotion ». That’s obvious. I mean really, let’s have a bit of imagination. When I’m forced to look at the span like this it’s seriously not like looking at myself, it’s like looking at another girl… I’m going to keep changing. Definitely! ». « I would love to do a comedy for my next movie, but I just have to really make the time for it ».

Now, let’s talk about Davina McCall: • Young Davina (born in 1967) wanted to launch herself into a music career, she even sang professionally with a band before going solo at the age of 19, but never became famous thanks to her singing skills. • Davina’s first TV break came in 1992 with her own show on MTV and in 2000, she was chosen to present the UK reality show Big Brother.

« What’s sad is that we were really good friends when we made that video. But I haven’t seen her for years. I suppose life got in the way. I got a boyfriend and she spent lots of time abroad and in Australia but I don’t know her any more. She meant a lot to me at that time and was lovely. It’s a shame. She took a chance on me when I wasn’t famous, so I’m very grateful for that, me being in that video was all thanks to her – nobody knew of me and we had a blast but I think I ruined it for her. It was her first single to flop. If I saw her now I’d jump on her with delight ». For information, the pair got together again in 2018. Here’s a pic to prove it!

LYRICS Ooh yeah, word is out Now the word is out Innocence Word is out, over town Now the word is out, the word is out

Ain’t but one redeeming feature So you may as well accept your fate (Accept your fate), Ooh You can’t wriggle out of this, It’s gone too far, it’s much too late (It’s much too late) But it’s funny my suspicions lead me to the lie From the friend of a so-called friend I heard about your double life

You’re clinging to a lie Still you hope to try And save your face, ooh It’s a no-win situation There ain’t gonna be a saving grace Because you’re sticking to a story It really makes no sense No judge or jury could ignore the evidence Chorus: Because the word is out I can’t go on believing in your innocence Now the word is out (the word is out) The word is out, You can’t go on pretending It’s all over town Now the word is out (the word is out)

Focus • Can’t Get You Out Of My Head

can’t get you out of my head the best performances on the television and on tour

The news came out this month: Kylie’s track, « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », has hit the 100 million mark on Spotify! A great score that made us want to celebrate this song and remember the best performances of the track, whether on television or during tours. We asked you on our social medias and here are the performances you like the most ! ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS TOUR (2001) During the « On A Night Like This Tour » which started on March 3rd and ended on May 15th, Kylie premiered « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » announcing to the audience that it was a new track. The video of this moment in Sydney is available on YouTube and it’s pretty funny to see the mixed feelings of people at the beginning of the track. The song was officially released as the first single of « Fever » on September 8th, so it was a big exclusivity for people in the audience, who had heard the original version. As Ian rightly pointed out on our Twitter: « You wouldn’t be able to ‘preview’ a song now and gain a No.1 hit 6 months later ». And it’s totally true!

MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS (2001) The MTV Europe Music Awards of 2001 took place on November 8th in Frankfurt, two months after the official release of « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head ». Kylie performed the track in a rather futuristic decor that matched with the music video : we can see people in boxes on two floors, six on each side before the singer appears in the middle, at the top of a staircase. What I love with this kind of performance is the atmosphere. Subdued lights which are red and the music is increasing the pressure, as we can have during concerts’ intros. As soon as Kylie starts to sing, the camera rises up from the bottom. She wears a (reaaaaaaally short and completely transparent) white dress with a hood as a reminder to her music video and dancers are also dressed in the same way as in the video. For once, it really looks like a live music video ! 22 www.kylie-world.com

BRIT AWARDS (2002) We can’t forget the Brit Awards performance! This is, for sure, the most legendary performance of the track and to me, the best performance in the history of a Kylie song. According to what I saw on our social medias, I’m not the only one to think that ! She chose to do a mashup of her track with « Blue Monday » with an incredible staging where she arrives lying on a giant CD with her name on it, that gets up when she has to sing. Once again, Kylie opted for a white mini dress with silver boots and created a buzz in the press, which was only talking about her the next day ! The singer also won the award for « Best Album » and « Best International Female Solo Artist Of The Year » during the same evening.

MONEY CAN’T BUY (2003) On November 15th, 2003, she gave a unique concert in London, at the Hammersmith Apollo, as part of the release of her album « Body Language ». Entitled « Money Can’t Buy », only the people with an invitation that they could win via the medias a few days earlier were able to attend the concert. If the overall performance of the track is more or less like the original version apart from a few details, the intro is quite well done, calm at first to go on electro vocals at the end. These small electro notes which are really calm bring an extra advantage to the song that fits perfectly to the concert.

X TOUR (2008) WHAT WHAT WHAT! First of all, what a tour! Let’s note it, because it is quite rare, « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » is the second track of the concert... It’s quite confusing when we think about it now because we’re used to having it in the middle / end of show to have a crazy atmosphere in the arena, but to be honest, when I think again about it, I find it good to have it at the beginning. The intro of the song was mixed with « Boombox » and it sounds pretty cool! You can see some videos on YouTube, especially in Brazil. We already know the audience in Brazil is crazy, but when you’ll see the video, you’ll be like OH. MY. GOD. It’s pretty amazing!

X FACTOR (2012) I could also choose the performance she did in Hyde Park, but I think that the one on « X Factor » has something more, especially regarding its visual aspect. Kylie sang her hit with an orchestra after the release of her album « The Abbey Road Sessions », where she sang her greatest songs in an orchestral version. I will not talk more about this performance, I think it speaks for itself!

GLAAD AWARDS (2014) You may find this choice odd, but this acapella version is super cool and it’s one of the only times I’ve heard it that way! The lyrics were broadcast on a giant screen for the audience to sing it at the same time (yeah it’s true, they are so hard to remember)… and Kylie also mounted on a table to the delight of guests (watch the video on YouTube, the gentlemen are very VERY happy).

GOLDEN TOUR (2018) And we conclude this non-exhaustive list with the version she sang during the « Golden Tour » that has perfectly embedded the spirit of the tour, with a small country/rock side that contains excerpts of « The Chain » by Fleetwood Mac. We can say a big THANK YOU to Steve Anderson because he is the one to offer us different versions every time, so we can’t get tired of the track ! I MARK RONSON would like to write for KYLIE

T

he author of the track « Nothing Breaks Like A Heart » which is actually a huge tune, said he would be delighted to write a disco track for Kylie. Our Australian announced a few months ago now that she would like to return to the dance and disco classics for her next album. She added that Mark Ronson would be one of the many artists she would like to collaborate with. He just jumped on the opportunity and said that he would never refuse a chance to work with the « legend » of pop. He told the Daily Star :

« Kylie always makes such good music, always progressive all of the time. So of course I would work with her... always. I would never turn down the chance to work with someone like that. I first met Kylie at the 2008 BRITS. She performed that year, and then I’ve seen her play a few times since, she is such a legend ». We can’t wait to see what’s happening next !

BACK TO THE STUDIO !

n January, a photo of Kylie in the studio was posted on social networks where we see the singer alongside Pete Hammerton and Steve McEwan, two music producers. The first worked for Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, One Direction and Little Mix and the second one collaborated with our Australian on « Dancing », « Stop Me From Falling », « Golden » and « Low Blow ». He has also worked with James Arthur, James Bay, James Blunt (yes a lot of James...) and Eminem, Carrie Underwood but also James Morrison (well, yes another James !). No news leaked about whether Kylie recorded new tracks or validated productions on which she wants to sing. We don’t know if something has been retained or if it will be used on the Greatest Hits supposed to be released later this year or for a future album... Once again, we just need to wait and see...

EVEN BETTER THAN THE « 10 Years Challenge »

Y

ou must have heard about or even taken part in the « 10 Years Challenge », which consists of posting a picture of you now and another one from 10 years ago. We tried it for Kylie, and what is certain is that the singer has not changed over the years! Let’s admit it, it’s true that this challenge is quite funny when you are between 20 and 30 years old, because we had some looks at the time that are worth seeing (or not). But let’s talk this time about a real professional, Ard Gelinck, who had fun editing photos of celebrities in his own way: the artist posted on the same picture a photo of the celebrity now, and her alter ego at a young age... It is rather well done and quite funny to see Kylie at two different times! All these pictures can be found on his Instagram and you should really go to have a look at it ! My favorite ones are personally Pink, Madonna and Michelle Obama!

kylie TO HEADLINE brighton pride

e’re not going to lie, many of you suspected it and it’s now official : Kylie will headline the Brighton Pride in Brighton (obviously). The event will take place over three days, from August 2nd to 4th, and our Australian will conclude the evening of the 3rd with an hour-and-a-half concert. Other artists will perform such as Grace Jones, Jessie J. and Clean Bandit. Some tickets are still on sale for the Saturday for £39.95. For you information, last year’s headliner was Britney Spears, and Brighton Pride is one of the most popular Gay Prides! Also note that Kylie has posted again the dates of her summer tour with this new show and the mention « More dates to be announced soon » has been removed. We can deduce that this performance will be the last of her summer tour, so it’s an opportunity that you shouldn’t miss! 27 www.kylie-world.com

K

a musical with the biggest songs from SAW ?

W

e have heard about a musical about Kylie’s life time and her career for some time now, as the singer has spoken about it in many interviews. This time it was Dan Wootton of the Sun who made the announcement by telling us that a musical comedy gathering the best tracks of the 80s of Stock, Aitken and Waterman (with some tracks of Kylie then) should happen. At the head of the project, Dawn O’Porter. If you don’t know her, she’s a British author, director and television producer. This musical should be titled « Especially For You », as a tribute to Kylie and Jason, and would include 80’s hits written, composed and produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, such as « I Should Be So Lucky », « Never Gonna Give You Up » and of course, « Especially For You ». The catalog of artists who dominated the charts three decades ago will be used, with of course Kylie but also Jason, Rick Astley, Sonia and Brother Beyond. Dawn O’Porter (who is married to the Irish actor Chris O’Dowd) isn’t going to make this a cookie-cutter musical. She is now creating content for television programs and wants to propose a scenario based on the #MeToo era, with female empowerment as a central theme. Douglas McJannet of Covent Garden Productions will be producing this alongside Sally Wood, the wife of Rolling Stones’ guitarist Ronnie Wood. The show is still in production, the teams are currently in the workshop stage. The goal would be to be ready for 2020 and the trio of composers Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Peter Waterman is very involved in the project. Apparently, there is also big money for an A-list leading duo during the show... Imagine if they managed to convince Kylie and Jason to sing « Especially For You » together again ? We can’t wait to learn more and discover this musical!

ylie has been announced as one of Australia’s honorees for the Australia Day Honours List, a ceremony to recognize and reward the talent of Australian citizens. when kylie has to call the police

because of a stalker...

I

t was on the front page of the Sun on January 31st in England: Kylie Minogue had to call the police following the presence of a man in front of her house who pressed the bell nonstop and didn’t want to leave. The famous British newspaper revealed this story which happened the last week of January. As reported by a neighbor in the newspaper:

« Kylie was quite upset and called in the police. They spoke to Kylie, and also the suspect in the street for quite a while ». Another neighbor of our Australian said she had already warned Kylie last month after spotting him on the street :

« A weirdo guy was lurking around. He went door to door asking people where Kylie lived. I don’t think anybody alerted the police but we gave her a heads-up because it wasn’t normal behavior ». The man is around 40 years old and was wearing a raincoat while he kept saying « Kylie, Kylie » all the time. However, we don’t know whether it was the same madman who had made threats against the singer at one of her concerts in Germany. He was not arrested but received a first warning for harassment by the police. Following this, Kylie is obviously a little shaken by these events and decided, even if she has already a lot of security around her, to take new measures to protect herself. Here’s what a neighbor said:

« She has always had security arrangements and people who she trusts nearby especially for when she goes out, but she will of course be looking at other options ».

This is not the first time a psychopath has frightened Kylie, who had already received many threats before, the most recent being the online threats made by a Belgian man before her concert in Germany. Here are some facts that have been mentioned by The Sun: • The most recent was in 2012, when a weird guy sent threatening messages to her on Twitter. She called the police, but no one was arrested. • In 2010, an Australian newspaper published pictures of a man who frequently came to Ron’s house, her father, with flowers and an engagement ring. • A year earlier, Kylie was a target of Mark Taylor, who sent many obscene letters to artists, including her sister, Dannii, Jennifer Aniston and Fearne Cotton. He was jailed for four months for harassing former Big Brother winner Kate Lawler and was forbidden to contact Kylie. • In 2003, the singer received more than 700 threatening letters at her home and at the office of her record company. They bore a West Country postmark and became increasingly aggressive and disturbed. In one of them, the author threatened to kill her. Kylie’s management reported the harassment to the Fulham police but once again the person who threatened the artist was not caught. For your information, these are just the facts that were revealed publicly, because we heard many others in the fanbase (which are probably not all true).

KYLIE BIGGEST SELLING SONGS (TOP 40) Last year, on 25 May 2018, officialcharts.com published online Kylie’s Official Top 40 biggest selling songs in the UK. Article by Justin Myers. I Should Be So Lucky It all started here. Thanks to Stock Aitken Waterman, Kylie topped the chart for five straight weeks in early 1988 with this lovelorn banger. It’s her third biggest seller, notching up 702,850 sales.

Better the Devil You Know Kylie’s first reinvention saw her ditch the « girl next door » image and embrace a more, well, « girl two doors down who’s got a tattoo and plays her music a bit too loud and drinks straight from the bottle » image. One of her many Number 2 singles – she has 12 to her name – Better the Devil You Know is in ninth place on her all-time chart with 340,000 copies sold. Spinning Around A huge comeback, but 11 songs refused to move out of her way, « Spinning Around » from 2000 finishes outside the Top 10, with 314,000 sales.

All The Lovers Kylie’s most recent Top 10 may have ended up peaking at 3 in the charts, but this 2010 single certainly made an impression, selling more than many of her Number 1s and all but one of her Number 2s, so to speak. 383,000 copies sold take it to sixth spot on the Kylie kountdown.

Especially For You Giving the public what they wanted at Christmas, Kylie teamed up with rumoured real-life love and actual Neighbours costar Jason Donovan for this smoochy, syrup-laden ballad. Thanks to Cliff Richard, it missed the Official Christmas Number 1 but did hit the top in early 1989. It became Kylie’s second million-selling single when it finally passed the magic milestone in December 2014, and currently stands at 1.09 million sales. Confide In Me It was all change for Kylie in 1994 when she waved bye-bye to Stock Aitken Waterman and explored her creative side with a new record label, a wealth of collaborators queuing to work with her and a new sound. First up was this spooky epic, which has shifted 189,000 copies and finished 17th. Can’t Get You Out Of My Head Here’s the big one! Kylie cemented that comeback in fine style with this dance-pop juggernaut from 2001, spending four weeks at the top and racking up incredible sales to land her first million-seller. « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head » la-la-lands at the top of her bestsellers’ list, with 1.205 million of you finding a place for it in your hearts.

30 www.kylie-world.com

Dancing Coming right up to date, while the lead single from Kylie’s new album « Golden » is a little too recent to make a dent on her Top 40, it currently sits in 50th position.

Laeti, February 2K19

Other notable tracks and chart facts • 1989 chart-topper « Hand on Your Heart » (4th) has shifted 494,000 copies, and Kylie’s biggest selling. • Number 2 single, « The Loco-Motion » (in 5th place) has sold 434,000. • Kylie’s most recent Number 1 « Slow », from 2003, is her lowest selling chart-topper, on 135,000 copies. • Her biggest selling song to miss the Top 5 is 2008’s « Higher » with Taio Cruz at 8 (338,000), and to miss the Top 10 is 2010’s « Get Outta My Way » at 28 (100,000 sales). • Kylie’s biggest selling album track is the infamous « Your Disco Needs You », which finished 52nd in her all-time chart.

an irish university is hosting a sympsosium on kylie !

T

his may seem not true but we promise, it’s the truth : a conference on Kylie will be organized by the University of Maynooth in Ireland, and also calls all her fans to participate. This academic event will be held in this same university with professors who will discuss her career and her cultural impact. A similar conference had already been organized for Madonna and David Bowie and invites all music and pop culture students to attend. One of the organizers and professor, Dr. Stephen O’Neill said : « Kylie has had a career spanning 30 years and the only literature available on her is academic research on her as a cancer survivor — - there is nothing on her as a music or gay icon. ».

If the singer has not been invited to this conference for the moment, the organizers are hoping to get a high profile keynote speaker on the subject, who cannot yet be named. The event will take place on November 16th, here is the official announcement : Kylie Minogue is an

international pop star, with over 80 million record sales worldwide. With a career spanning 30 years, plus the recent announcement that she will star in the Glastonbury 2019 Festival’s ‘Legend’ slot, Kylie has given the late 20th century and early 21st century some its most iconic pop songs and videos, from « Confide in Me » and « Spinning Around » to « Can’t Get You Out of My Head » , « All the Lovers » and her latest album, « Golden ». Minogue’s status as audio-visual pop star, as a female singer with a capacity for reinvention whose decades-long career shows little sign of slowing down, as well as gay icon, celebrity, and cancer-survivor mark her out as a distinctive popular figure and invite critical appraisal. This symposium invites proposals for papers on Kylie from a range of perspectives, including popular music studies, media studies, cultural studies and queer studies. Papers from a musicological perspective might address topics such as Kylie as singer, performer, songwriter, her status as a pop diva, her artistic reinventions over the years, questions of voice, liveness, and technological intervention,

BE COOL, BE NICE !

as well as popular music and notions of legacy. Proposals from the perspectives of media and cultural studies might attend to context and also reception, and explore fan cultures, and the legions of #lovers and online communities, or Minogue’s location in and negotiation of the culture industry. Papers might also address Kylie via celebrity studies, and explore questions of age, race, gender, and branding in the songs and in Minogue’s own public image. This oneday academic conference aims to explore these and other issues, and to mark Kylie’s status as an enduring pop star. The organisers intend to develop a publication arising from this event in the form of a collection of academic essays. Further details about the publication will be provided at a later date. Abstracts of 250 words, along with a 100-word biography (including selected publications) should be sent to conference organisers Antonio Cascelli, Stephen O’Neill, and Laura Watson at the email kyliemaynoothsymposium@gmail.com by Friday 15 March 2019.

et’s talk about two little videos that you have probably seen if you are on social networks: Kylie filmed a small message in which she said « Be Cool, Be Nice. It’s cool to be nice! », and she is not the only one who has done that ! Indeed, the fashion industry has come out in force support the movement « Be Cool, Be Nice », a few years ago, which is an anti-bullying cyber campaign. A book was also launched in collaboration with Snapchat where you could find exclusive content if you scanned the code, and many artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Doutzen Kroes and Rita Ora are promoting it. You can also check out little bears that have been customized by designers. If you want to know more about this movement, you can go now on http://www.becoolbenice.org/ and on our social networks to see (again) the little video made by Kylie !

nd now some very sad news. On 19th February, it was all over the i n - ternet: Chanel’s leading designer for 30 years, Karl Lagerfeld, had died at the age of 85. We kind of knew he wasn’t well because he had said it himself in an interview in 2018 and the last time he had appeared in the public eye was in November 2018 and he really didn’t look well at all indeed. But we got confirmation that something was really wrong when, for the very first time ever since he took over Chanel, he didn’t show up at Chanel’s Couture Show in January 2019 during the fashion week (sources said « he was too tired »). The designer, known for his huge talent, his unmistakable look and some of his outrageous comments, has worked with Kylie over the past. We’ll tell you all about their friendship and their work relationship next month. RIP Karl x

SWINGING SAFARI PICKED UP FOR US

estEnd Films has closed North American and European deals on « Swinging Safari », Stephan Elliott’s Australian comedy. Blue Fox has taken U.S. and Canada rights and will release the film theatrically early this summer. Elliott (« The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert ») wrote and directed the film, which is set in mid1970s Australia and stars Guy Pearce (« Iron Man 3 ») and Kylie Minogue (« Moulin Rouge! »). It is set in the beach suburb of Dee Why. When the town suddenly hits the spotlight after the body of a 200-ton whale is washed ashore, teenagers Jeff and Melly think it’s the biggest thing that’s ever happened in their lives. Meanwhile, their eccentric parents are catching up with the sexual revolution that has also washed up on Australia’s beaches. The U.S. deal was negotiated by Blue Fox Entertainment’s Todd Slater with WestEnd Films’ Maya Amsellem negotiating on behalf of the filmmakers. WestEnd has also closed deals with One2See Movies in the Benelux countries, with Lighthouse Entertainment in Germany and with Spentzos in Greece. The U.K.-based sales firm had already announced sales in a raft of territories, including with Thunderbird in Britain and with Swift in France. Al Clark (« Red Hill ») and Jamie Hilton (« Breath ») produced « Swinging Safari », which is also known as « Flammable Children ». It had its international premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

RUMORS • You all remember the selfie Kylie did on Valentine’s Day, but also the mess behind her. Apparently, the singer did a photoshoot on the same day, which could explain the mess behind her… • If we should know the release date of the « Golden Tour » DVD very soon, according to several rumors, it is currently being remastered for better quality. Some people even mentioned the possibility of having the concert on Netflix - but we have a little doubt about that.

hat a better way to finish the news of this month than this beautiful photo of Kylie and Dolly together? Yes, it’s real, and one thing is certain, Kylie was extremely happy! Our Australian went to the premiere of Dolly Parton’s musical « 9 To 5, the musical » at the Savoy Theater on February 17th. Based on the 80s movie of the same name, the show debuted in Los Angeles in 2008 before going on Broadway, and then touring the United States, England, Brazil and Germany. You can see « 9 To 5 The Musical » until August 31st in London. Laeti, February 2K19

ylie Minogue sounds tired. She’s just finished the European leg of her Golden tour – a whopping 26 shows in less than four months. She’s not afraid to admit that this run nearly got the best of her, thanks to a few bouts of flu and even a security threat at her concert in Cologne, Germany, in November, which thankfully passed without incident. « I’ll be forever grateful for 2018, but it has been a struggle as well », says the 50-year-old pop princess from her London home. « My struggle has been keeping up the pace. I’ve been under the weather a bit and I had to cancel a couple of gigs. With my show in Hamburg [on November 24], people said, ‘Oh you just crawled over the finish line at the end.’ I said, ‘I was crawling to get over [it] from the very beginning’». But don’t be fooled. By the next breath, Kylie is insisting that she wouldn’t have changed a thing. « Imagine if I hadn’t done this album? » she asks rhetorically. « How much would I not have experienced and... learned? Making this album and doing these shows has been a revelation for me », the chart-topper casually explains.

Girl

Interview • Marie-Claire Australia She should be so lucky? Turns out she is. Anyone who has followed Kylie’s professional and personal life (haven’t we all) since she became a household name playing Charlene Robinson on Neighbours at just 17 years of age, knows she’s never been one to let anything set her back for long. Over the course of three decades - amid countless reinventions from girl-next-door to sex kitten to showgirl - she’s released 14 albums and sold more than 80 million records. Not everyone could handle the series of career highs and lows, the very public broken relationships and her devastating battle with breast cancer in 2005, yet still emerge with the cheerful optimism that is as much her trademark as those gold hotpants. Kylie’s resilience is astonishing. « Some days, when it’s hard, I ask myself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ », she says wryly. « But it’s what I do. And any time i say, « I’m going to stop » my friends just laugh at me ». By her own admission, the Golden album – timed to mark her 50th birthday last May and featuring Kylie in her latest incarnation as country music babe – is at least in part a testament to this endurance. She admits she was in a pretty low place when she began recording it in early 2017, having just broken up with her fiancé, actor Joshua Sasse, who was 19 years her junior. « The people I was working with could see that I was a bit fragile », she says. « I wanted to make it personal and get some things off my chest ». Although she insists the album isn’t about one person or relationship in particular, it’s not hard to conclude that Sasse, rumoured to have cheated on the singer, inspired some of the tracks. « Too many times I wish I’d never cared, been torn and twisted, oh I swear. Too many nights crying that it’s not fair », she sings in « A Lifetime To Repair », and on « One Last Kiss » she laments, « It feels like my heart, it’s breaking in two ». « I don’t want to say (making the album) was like therapy but I suppose it was », she admits of the intense and personal topics it covered. « It was a good way of exorcising some things ».

LEFT : Minogue admires new beau Paul Solomons at an awards ceremony in London late last year. ABOVE : on stage with sister Dannii at the 2015 Royal Albert Hall Christmas concert.

« I WANTED TO MAKE (GOLDEN) PERSONAL AND GET SOME THINGS OFF MY CHEST. I SUPPOSE (MAKING THE ALBUM) WAS LIKE THERAPY » Many would argue Kylie had more than just Sasse to exorcise from her psyche. Although this most recent breakup seemed to hit her especially hard - she even told The Sunday Times that she had a « nervous breakdown » when it happened, soothed by a recuperative holiday in Thailand with a couple of girlfriends - over the decades she has been what many headline writers have gleefully referred to as « unlucky in love ». When it comes to romantic relationships, her track record has been established - visible couplings and icy dissolutions. From INXS frontman Michael Hutchence to a string of elegant European dilettantes including actor Olivier Martinez, model Andrés Velencoso, photographer Stéphane Sednaoui and of course Sasse. All ended in tears, but at least she was able to channel her disappointment into strong lyrics. Golden, however, deals with more than just heartbreak. There’s also a hint that Kylie is once again open to dipping her toe into the water of cautious new love. « We’re becoming more than friends », she sings in « Stop Me From Falling » before adding tentatively, « I’m lost in hesitation, my heart’s a little shaken ». Fast forward a few months past the album’s release and life seems to have imitated art, as the singer has indeed overcome any hesitations and found someone to be more than just friends with again. Even thousands of kilometres away the elation in her voice is clear when she’s asked about her new partner, 44-year-old Paul Solomons, the creative director of British GQ magazine. « I... I don’t even have the words », she breathes. « He’s amazing ». The couple began dating in early 2018, and first met on a photo shoot in 2004. She says finding someone to share her life with again has gone a long way to help her through some of the harder aspects of the past year. Kylie insists they aren’t making any immediate future plans, despite the singer recently wearing a gold band on the ring finger of her right hand. « I wouldn’t be sharing (any plans) with you if there were any - I’m really sorry! » she adds with the polite restraint of someone who has faced prying media questions for more than 30 years and who has already explained, many times, that future children are almost certainly out of the question, not least because of the physical impact of her cancer treatment. Instead, she says, they are simply enjoying being together. « We’re taking things as they come and enjoying every minute of it ». When she’s not on the road, the singer says her life is surprisingly mundane. « I just do the normal stuff really », she says. « I meet up with girlfriends for a cup of tea or

« (PAUL) IS AMAZING I DON’T EVEN HAVE THE WORDS »

to go to the movies. I stay at home, cook dinner and catchup on crappy TV ». She is close with her family, notably her younger siblings Brendan and Dannii, and her parents Ron and Carol as well. « My parents are the furthest thing in the world from pushy showbiz parents and I turn to them for a lot - for career things but also, you know, life things. I’ve jumped onboard with my parents’ holidays on more than one occasion when I’ve been having a terrible time. Just sort of (going), ‘Hey, mind if I join you ? » It’s not just holidays with mum and dad that speak to Kylie’s decidedly un-rock’n’roll approach to life. Equally un-diva-like is her refusal to disguise or downplay the fact she reached the big 5-0 last year (after all, you don’t call your new album « Golden » if you’re embarrassed about your age). In a move she called « pretty out of character », Kylie celebrated her half century with a party at London’s exclusive Chiltern Firehouse hotel, joined by former Neighbours alumni Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce, as well as Graham Norton, Chrissie Hynde and David Walliams. Still, she understands that being 50 means she has to apply more muscle to maintenance, simply part of the job when your body and face are as much a part of your package as your voice. « I have a great dermatologist who keeps things as in shape as possible », she explains. « I don’t smoke and I only drink socially ». She credits the tininess of her frame - the singer is only a whisper above 1,5 metres tall - as one reason her body never seems to change in a perceptible way. « If my jeans feel tight one week, other people don’t really notice it », she says. Other areas require a little more attention. « I’d love to get rid of pigmentation », she bemoans. « And I’d love to not have to keep dying my hair ». But remember, she adds, « When you see me, you see me very much as « presented » - hair,

make-up, lighting, costumes. If you could see me now you’d be reassured a lot of it is smoke and mirrors ». Away from the showbiz facade, simple downtime is the obvious priority for the singer before she regroups for the Australian leg of the Golden Tour in March. Solomons, it seems, is set to play a large role. « I’ve had my share of holidays with my girlfriends and my gay friends and every other friend but basically without a boyfriend », she says. « So having that has played a huge part in (my happiness lately)... I’m definitely reaching the stage where I want to just lie on a beach on a holiday, and I’ve never really had that before. I’ve always been a « do stuff » on holiday person. Now I just want to sit on a sundeck and look forward to a glass of rosé and chill out ». Her sense of contentment is palpable, and it’s clear that turning 50 has heralded a new era for the much-loved singer. « I feel comfortable with who I am », she says. « And to have someone to share with and help you when it’s not going right and times are tough... It’s so precious ». Kylie Minogue’s Golden tour kicks off in Australia in Sydney on March 5.

Interview • Beauty Full Lives

beauty full lives

audio podcast on acast by madeleine spencer Episode one of season two of Beauty Full Lives with Kylie Minogue. Player FM Podcast (22 January 2019). By Madeleine Spencer (who is a massive Kylie fan herself)

Madeleine: How good are you at doing your own make-up? Kylie: Really good. Are you? Yeah. Ok, I didn't do it today but... I can almost tell when a make-up artist is doing my face if they’re getting it right or not. If I added up the amount of hours I've sat in hair and make-up chairs, it’s a lot. If someone was doing something wrong, I mean you know sort of when they’re cutting your hair and they’re going too short... I don’t tell them, I just hate them in my head. Would you say something? Yeah I do do that because I will often think ‘let's just say I could be wrong’. And I'm just curious, I'm too curious. So where are we going? But yeah there have been times where I go « It's a no ». Then I'll say what if we just try the... [whatever it is], should we just try that? But if you both realize that’s different you just go... start again. Sometimes you have to start again. Well, if you like getting ready and stuff, I'm wondering... so, when you’re on stage, you're dressed up, you're done... But when you're at home, is it something that you still do because you enjoy it or do you think « thank god a tracksuit and no make-up day » ? Definitely the latter. But sometimes, well more than sometimes, I will... I mean ok sorry there's many

things going through my head... I used to, like in TV when I was younger, I was up early 6:00 a.m. driving to the studio, trying to learn my lines on the way, figure that out later... And then when I got into music I think I just got more rock’n’roll time schedules. You know I'm not the best sleeper, I'm so envious of people who can just put their head on the pillow and they're out. I'll be up quite late which means that if I don't have to get up I'll sleep. So I will often go, the best part of the day... with nothing. And then I'll start putting make-up at maybe 5 p.m. Oh great. So you come out in the evening ? Yeah, I'm kind of fascinated... maybe it’s more guys who are like this. They're either asleep or straight into jeans, shirt, well clothing, like ‘face the world’ clothing. I have a strong middle zone which is the track pants. You don’t sunbathe as a rule, right? Really rarely. And you’ou'not big into fake tan stuff. Well, if I do a fake tan, which I think is a great invention, I'll do it lightly. Ok, but it's a nice thing that now there are options to not have a permanent tan. Yeah, I mean you can get good natural tans as well. 42 www.kylie-world.com

You fly a lot. Do you have an inflight beauty routine? Don’t drink too much, well don’t drink anything like alcohol. I do travel so much I couldn’t go without my roller ball (under eye serum) that I basically don’t unpack these days, it stays there ready. I’ve got my Bose noise cancelling headphones which is the best investment for travel. Currently I’m using the Organic pharmacy rose cream which is really rich and nice. People kind of stop you and go « It smells good what is it? » « It’s the moisturizer ». I mean you’re at 38000 feet in a hunk of metal for 14 hours so you’re not going to feel exceptional at the other end. So, you just chill out then? Is that your way to get through the flight? Yeah and normally by the time you get to fly there’s the anxiety of getting ready to travel and packing all the right things and making sure everything’s sorted before you go. That never changes. And people say « Don’t you have someone to do that? » I don’t know, I just think it’s something you have to do yourself... I’m currently just sorting some packings... The attitude towards aging in general has changed enormously of late... For the most part, yeah. I’m wondering if you have a certain mindset now that you’re 50. Isa, February 2K19

Are you thinking « What a great age and I'm excited » or how do you feel about it? There's much that is exciting, just feeling like the pace dropped in a few areas and I go « Right, OK, I start to get stuff ». I start to get stuff from a long long time ago that I know just takes more life experience to kind of be able to look at it in an understanding way. And the fact that, as you say, society is being less judgmental about that for the most part is great for anyone my age at this point in time. Yeah. It's good for women as well. It's like « thank God! ». I mean it's frustrating because you say that the more we can get away from that the better because you either look too good or you don't look good enough. Like can't you just look the way you look? If you could inhabit any day or week one of your looks from your back catalog - please say something with a flat cap - but what would it be? I was wearing a lot of flat caps... it was around 2002 or something like that? I know because I've been a Kylie fan since I was a child! Oh really!? Yeah, so I've kind of grown with you! And cargo-pants to go with them. Yeah With heels. The ‘Love At First Sight’ sort of style? Yeah, it was good like that could take you to real life as well. Yeah I certainly wouldn't be, you know, going out for my morning coffee in a full showgirl outfit. What about the perm? It's making a comeback. Well the thing is I never had a perm, I have curly hair. Oh really, I didn't know that. Well with mousse, a scrunch hair

dryer and a diffuser. It's got some help. Okay. That's quite handy. I mean we did it in some of those shots. We loved it. Oh and it’s great, I hadn’t seen that. Ok! So maybe a perm and the heels, and the cargo pants. You’ve sort of maintained your sense of dignity and decorum (despite what the media have said about her). When you started out you were very young, did you have a mantra in your head or a rule? No, but I think I was really thrown into it quite young, it’s not like I was 14! I started working on TV at 11 but I wasn't famous. I just think it must be about how you're raised and who you are. I learnt really quickly or had just a kind of innate understanding that you have a relationship with the audience so it's a bit like your relationship with your friends. It kind of is and it isn't. So you know there's quite a strong line for me as to how much I share and how much is mine. If I had never had that, I don’t think I would have coped as well... This leads me onto the next question. Everyone's talking about mental health at the moment, which I personally think is absolutely great. And I wondered is that your method of safeguarding yours, because people are looking in a lot at you and I just wondered if you had anything you do like meditation or anything that kind of keeps you sane? Not so much to keep me sane but... well maybe it is a bit but definitely to get through long days where there's like a video day or sometimes a photoshoot, where it's just it's a lot at you and it's really hard for anyone in your team to understand because looking from the outside it doesn't look that much... But it’s people, it’s eyes, it’s lights, it's a camera, it's questions and it's all of that. So I will often, like as often as 43 www.kylie-world.com

I can... there's lunchtime, even if it’s like a half-hour lunch because you normally get ripped-off at lunchtime, get the meal in quickly and then say to my system « Right that's it, twenty minutes ». I like to have something on my phone like an app with something rather relaxing or literary go to YouTube with 20-minute relaxation music. Is that also a noise cancelling headphones situation? No I don't even mind the noise. It's literally just... and it took me a minute to understand it, a few years ago. I have one grandma and she's 98 and she told me about 10 years ago because I said: « How do you do it? How do you stay so cool? ». And she said, well she’s Welsh and I can’t do the Welsh accent « Well just lie down for 10 minutes, just lie down flat and put your palms up », she’s basically talking about relaxation. « Just stop for 10 minutes ». So I’ll often do that on workdays and I think I spend about 18 minutes doing it. Adrenaline still kicking in, twitching all around the place and I really can feel there's a moment where it's like a little jolt where you go to the next level. And then it's just amazing. And then I know I've probably got two minutes left to really enjoy this feeling and then it's time. But it will literally get me through the rest of the day, which I'd get through anyway, but just a bit calmer. It’s almost like a yoga moment. Yeah. I have a firearm of very quick questions. Ok? So talk us through your idea of a lazy Sunday in London. I'm not going anywhere. I stay home. You stay home? Yeah. Ordering food? No I have food at home so I can literally not have any contact with anyone for that. Ok. Would you switch your phone Isa, February 2K19

Interview • Beauty Full Lives off in that scenario? No. I mean, it's a really good time for me to have a proper one-hour conversation with my girlfriend in Australia or L.A. or my family, my brother, my sister. Actually that’s a really good way to chill-out. If someone were new to London, where would you tell them to go for dinner? I'd say J. Sheekey’s, I always like. You really feel like you're in the West End, and you can get some oysters. If you're cooking dinner for friends what's on the menu and can you cook? No. Cooking is not a high point in my résumé. I could if I had to. But somehow that kind of went straight to my brother and sister who are great cooks. So I'm just... I'm out of practice. What's the most used app on your phone? The alarm. You've met and worked with lots of icons, who if any have left you starstruck? Well I didn't work with Dolly but she's the last person I met who... I only met her once before her show at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. and I was pretty starstruck. I think my hands ended up on her waist and I’m not quite sure how they got there. Well I have a fan question as well. If I said « Hey Yo Kylie » what would you say? What’s up with this one boy girl thing? Yeah! Excellent. I did it on the Anti-tour. I know because I was there. So if I have to enter a Kylie competition can you do it for me? Anytime.

Young Madeleine with a poster of Kylie.

I think I will lose and you'll win it for us. Do you remember all the lyrics from your back catalogue? No. One of our very good friends who is also a huge Kylie fan has said « Could you ask Kylie why she doesn't ever sing « Made In Heaven », « If You Were With Me Now », « Never Too Late » and « Bittersweet Goodbye ». Oh well the main reason is that there's... I mean I'm equally chuffed and embarrassed to say, there's no room for them in the concerts. I think I did some of those on the anti-tour, which you know because you were there... « Bittersweet Goodbye » is a beautiful song, yeah. « Never Too Late », we did that in the last tour in a medley. Yes but not really really, it’s not enough Kylie. 44 www.kylie-world.com

MORE ABOUT MADELEINE’S INTERVIEW WITH KYLIE I am a Kylie fan. Of epic proportions – she has provided the soundtrack to my life and has inspired me with her quiet grace and inner determination to remain resilient after many of life’s wobbles. I was therefore extremely excited/ nervous when she agreed to this interview but I quite genuinely couldn’t have hoped for more – Kylie was funny, bursting with character, and extremely considered and kind. I know it’s generally considered to be poor form for an interviewer to insert themselves into the narrative, but I just wanted to offer an insight into my fandom as I think it’s important to mention given that I’m clearly a bit giddy throughout and ask Kylie a fair amount of questions my friend Oliver and I have been desperate to ask her for years as an audience with Kylie is a rare thing and the opportunity may never again present itself. Products Kylie mentions include: • The Organic Pharmacy Rose Diamond Face Cream. • Bose Noise-Cancelling Earphones. Isa, February 2K19

ast week we celebrated some of the Challenge community’s unsung heroes – the people behind the scenes, who work tirelessly to help make life a little brighter for kids and families living with cancer. There is one more person we would like to congratulate and that person is Kylie Minogue. On Australia Day this year, Kylie was recognised and honoured with the Officer of the Order of Australia Award (AO) for her service to the performing arts. However, whilst an absolute star and icon of her industry, it is not only what she does on the stage for which Kylie should be congratulated, but also off the stage. For more than 25 years now Kylie has been a champion of the Challenge organisation and has sought to make a difference to our many families’ lives. From hosting Challenge members backstage at her sold-out concerts to brighte-

ning the halls of the cancer ward, Kylie always makes herself available and tries to be involved as much as possible amidst her insanely busy schedule. Kylie first became involved with Challenge in the early ‘90s and since then, has forged a unique bond with our organisation that it is able to withstand the constraints of distance and time itself. Challenge has shared many special memories with Kylie over its decades of friendship, but there is one memory that stands out most. It was the eve of Christmas 1998. While hundreds of thousands of families across Australia snuggled at home on the couch, listening to Christmas carols and dreaming of all the presents that would await them the following morning, hundreds of 47 www.kylie-world.com

of other families spent their Christmas Eve listening to the sound of beeping monitors that echoed throughout the sterile halls of the hospital ward. Kylie Minogue had every opportunity to be one of those families spending their Christmas eve with family and friends, eating and laughing – and she had every right to – but that year, she wanted to do something different. Instead, Kylie joined Challenge CEO, David Rogers, in at the Royal Children’s Hospital to help bring some Christmas cheer. For kids in hospital, life can sometimes feel like it is has come to a standstill; everyone and everything is still tracking along, but they are being left behind, shackled to the immovability of their illness. But all it takes is just one moment for all of that to change. It takes one hero or one person to give them that real reason to smile – that person was Kylie. Everything else happening in the world didn’t really matter for those kids at that moment because for once in their lives, they were happy for life to slow down so they could really treasure that experience of having someone as celebrated and iconic as Kylie Minogue there to see and spend Christmas eve with them.

Being an internationally renowned superstar, it is easy to get carried away with the fame and fortune of Hollywood, but Kylie never did. Through all her success, Kylie remained the grounded and giving person that she is, always endeavouring to use her riches and profile for a more profound purpose. Kylie also knows firsthand the hardship that is faced throughout the cancer journey having experienced it herself. In May of 2005, Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. Almost 14 years later, the Grammy award-winning artist is cancer free and is using her platform once again to make a difference through awareness campaigns to promote early detection tests for breast cancer. Kylie not only sings her heart out on the stage, but she also sings it off the stage too. She is a true champion and a true Australian hero. We are forever grateful to be one of the many beneficia-

ries of her huge generosity. Well done, Kylie! This is a huge and well-deserved honour.

Kylie in the press • February

I

t was the summer of 1978, and in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, Carol Minogue was wrestling with a dilemma. Her seven-year-old daughter Dannii was a stage-school attendee and desperate to go to an audition at a casting agency that was looking for child actors. But if she took her, there was nobody to look after her other kids, Kylie, ten, and Brendan, eight. « Eventually, I wore her down and she agreed to take me on the condition that Brendan and Kylie came along too, just to make it fair », Dannii later revealed. « Then Kylie got cast [instead] ». The idea of the eldest Minogue sister becoming a star stunned everyone – until that point, her only interest in entertainment was learning to play the piano. But her breakthrough role as a Dutch orphan in The Sullivans, a drama series set in World War II, put her on the road to a 40-year career and has seen her amass over 80 million record sales worldwide. Now 50, and second only to Madonna in terms of image reinvention, Minogue is set to spend 2019 touring on the back of her country and western-inspired album « Golden » – her sixth album to hit number one. « I had no idea music would become my life, I thought acting would be my path » she said. Born Kylie Ann Minogue on 28 May 1968 in Melbourne, her mother Carol was a former stage dancer and her father, Ron, an accountant. After her eight-episode run on The Sullivans, Minogue’s next role was on a show called Skyways, where a certain Jason Donovan was cast as her older brother. Her first recollection of him was that he was « really chubby with a bowl haircut », but the pair would later go on to become both on- and off-screen lovers.

In April 1986, Minogue, then 18, joined the popular daytime soap Neighbours as mechanic Charlene Mitchell. Donovan was already on the show, as Scott Robinson, and it wasn’t long before the producers decided to exploit their winsome appeal by making their characters a couple. They then began dating in real life, but played an effective « are they, aren’t they » game with fans and the press. The fascination over their relationship lead to a 20 million UK audience on 8 November 1988 for the episode in which Scott and Charlene married. Off camera, though, their relationship was floundering as Minogue’s music career took off. A year previously, she’d signed a record deal in Australia after music executives spotted her singing at a benefit concert, and her version of the 60s hit « The Locomotion » then spent seven weeks at the top of the Australian charts. It caught the attention of Brit record producers Stock Aitken Waterman

(SAW), who flew Minogue to London to discuss working with her – but then forgot she was coming and wrote « I Should Be So Lucky » while she waited in reception before their meeting. « We had to get the song together in about 40 minutes », admitted Mike Stock. It was an international hit, selling an estimated 695,000 copies in the UK alone. But Donovan was struggling with Minogue’s success, despite also having signed to SAW. « It was a jealousy thing », he later said. « I could see her slipping away ». In 1989, then 21, she met INXS singer Michael Hutchence and ended her romance with Donovan. « It was bad enough that she’d run off with anybody, but she happened to run into the arms of the greatest rock god of the period, the very guy who I secretly wanted to be », Donovan admitted. « I took a long time to recover from it ».

Laeti, February 2K19

Much was made in the press of Minogue’s transformation while she was with Hutchence: gone was the ingénue next door and in her place was a pixie-cropped siren. « Let’s just say my eyes were open to the world », she said, crediting him for introducing her to « lots of firsts ». « It was a great love ». The relationship confounded public expectations of a young innocent Minogue and triggered a continuing fascination with her love life. When Hutchence left her for model Helena Christensen in 1991, she then had a fling with the equally rakish Lenny Kravitz. Her music became more rebellious, too, with her third album « Rhythm Of Love » in 1990 spawning hits like « Better The Devil You Know », which was adopted by the gay community as an anthem and turned her into its icon. In 1993, she parted ways with SAW and signed to indie label Deconstruction to release her fifth album. Tackling themes of sex and infidelity, the Barbarella-esque video for « Put Yourself In My Place » caused uproar, and her sales didn’t match previous highs. It was in the late 90s that she met the man who would play a pivotal role in reviving her pop career. William Baker was an assistant at Vivienne Westwood’s store in London and a huge Minogue fan. He contacted her label asking if she had a stylist. The singer then turned up unannounced at the store to talk to him. Baker made his mark sourcing the gold hot pants she wore in the video for her comeback single « Spinning Around » in 2000 – her first UK number one in a decade. Contrary to the oft-quoted story, however, he didn’t pay 50p for them in an Oxfam shop. « She bought them years ago from a market stall, and I unearthed them from the bottom of her drawer when we were

scrambling through the wardrobe looking for something », he revealed. A year later, Minogue, then 33, continued her career revival with the album « Fever », which featured the track « Can’t Get You Out Of My Head », her most successful single to date, which earned her a BRIT award. However, once again her career was at odds with her private life. A three-year relationship

« Who knows if that’s part of my story. But maybe I’m just a little bit unconventional », she said. « I never had it as a goal ». Then, two years into their relationship, the singer’s gilded life turned a desperately sad corner. On 17 May 2005, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a partial mastectomy. « Oli was there all the time, helping with the practical stuff and being protective », she said. The trethere

tionship with British model-turned-photographer James Gooding imploded in early 2003 when his infidelity was exposed. He then sold his story to a tabloid newspaper and she described splitting as « difficult and emotional ». She wasn’t single for long, though, meeting French actor Olivier Martinez at the Grammys that February. Speculation grew that he’d propose, but Minogue often hinted marriage wasn’t for her.

being protective », she said. The treatment all but destroyed her chances of having children naturally, something she only discussed for the first time last year when she revealed she’d undergone a medical menopause after her oestrogen levels were suppressed to fight the cancer. « Of course I wonder what [having children] would be like, but your destiny is your destiny », she said.

Kylie in the press • February In 2007, she returned to the spotlight with a new album, « X », and also released a documentary called White Diamond: A Personal Portrait Of Kylie Minogue, shot behind the scenes on her « Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour ». It was a welcome return to being in front of the camera. She’d never turned her back on acting completely, though – she starred as The Green Fairy in 2001’s Moulin Rouge!, and appeared on various TV shows, including Australian cult comedy series, Kath & Kim. Yet music was where her heart lay, and in 2012 she undertook a 12-month celebration of her quarter-century in the music industry, named K25. But while her career was thriving, the effort of maintaining it was putting pressure on her personal life. Since 2008, she’d been in a relationship with Spanish model Andrés Velencoso, ten years her junior, and in 2012 had described him as « the one ». But it ended just 12 months later, apparently due to work commitments driving them apart, leaving her « devas-

tated ». In 2016, she became a judge on The Voice, and stunned everyone by accepting a whirlwind proposal from 29-year-old British actor Joshua Sasse. Their highly publicised split in February 2017 left her ‘broken’ and she went to Thailand with friends to recover. « I just wanted to stop. I knew I needed to heal », she said. « My physical system was compromised. I think it’s called a nervous breakdown ». Her recovery sparked another change of musical direction and image when she flew to Nashville, birthplace of country music, to record her album « Golden ». « It was, in many ways, a great escape », she said. « I was quite fragile when I started work on it, but being able to express myself in the studio made quick work of regaining my sense of self ». Today, Minogue is continuing to celebrate her musical milestones, marking the 30th anniversary of her and Donovan’s duet, « Especially For You », in November last year. She also reunited with

another Neighbours co-star, Guy Pearce, to film the Australian comedy Swinging Safari, in which she played a housewife. She has found love with Welsh-born GQ magazine creative director Paul Solomons, 43. They were introduced by a mutual friend in February 2018 and went public at Minogue’s 50th birthday celebrations last May. As for which musical incarnation will follow « country Kylie », Minogue isn’t saying, but she has been refreshingly candid about how she’ll cosmetically transform her image into ‘ageless Kylie’ if she needs to. « I’m not pro or against [surgery]. One of my absolute idols is Jane Fonda, and the way she has handled it is admirable », Minogue said in an interview last year. « I remember her saying something like, it’s 80 per cent genetics, ten per cent taking care of yourself and ten per cent a good surgeon. So if, and when, the time comes I’ll be taking a leaf out of her book ».

Jake Shears flying solo after cutting ties with Scissors news.com.au

Jake Shears is headed back to Australia for the first time since the demise of his former band Scissor Sisters with a very able tour guide — his bestie Kylie Minogue. Jake Shears’ guest slot on Kylie Minogue’s March tour of Australia was signed off in her London kitchen last year. 51 www.kylie-world.com

T

he two had been waiting for the offer for firm up for months, with the deal finally sealed at Minogue HQ. « It’s a once in a lifetime for our friendship », Shears says. They became instant friends in 2004 when Minogue wrote « I Believe in You » with Shears when he was frontman of US band Scissor Sisters. The next year Shears was boosting Minogue’s spirits in Paris during her recovery from treatment for breast cancer, detailed in his autobiography Boys Keep Swinging. Last year Shears was a surprise guest at Minogue’s 50th birthday party in London. « I’d actually played a show in Birmingham that night so she didn’t think I was coming », Shears says. « I jumped off stage and had to get a bus to London because the trains were broken and I made it to the par-

ty just in time. I jumped out in a sequined outfit and we sang « Islands in the Stream together » ». The Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers duet wasn’t completely new ground. Three years ago Shears and Minogue were the guests of honour at a Dolly Parton themed Christmas party for a London talent agency. « I put a bluegrass band together and Kylie and I were the entertainment for the party and did Dolly songs. I think that gave her some of the inspiration for going to Nashville and making (2018’s) Golden ». At this point in their career and friendship, Minogue and Shears are on the same musical page — with Shears’ self-titled solo debut and Minogue’s Nashville-tinged « Golden » being complimentary records. « They fit together, they have a Southern feel — Tennessee and Louisiana retrospectively in

52 www.kylie-world.com

the States. This has been a landmark year for Kylie and I, she turned 50, I turned 40. It’s special we get to do this tour together. I’m sure we’ll concoct some fun things to do on stage ». Compared to Kylie’s party, Shears’ 40th was a quieter affair. « I went to dinner with a friend in LA, that’s it. The whole year has a been a f---ing party, so I was compelled to have a very sweet and quiet night! ». After launching with 2004’s multi-million selling self-titled debut (home to « Take Your Mama », « Laura », « Filthy/Gorgeous » and their Pink Floyd cover « Comfortably Numb ») and 2006’s « Ta-Dah! » (featuring the Australian No. 1 « I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ ») Scissor Sisters quietly went on hiatus after their fourth album, 2012’s « Magic Hour », and the hit « Let’s Have a Kiki ».

Kylie in the press • February « We had a good run, something in my soul just said it was a good time to put it down », Shears says. « We’d done everything we set out to do, it was mission accomplished in a way. Sometimes I think it’s better to step back on a high note than run something longer than it needs to. Which was a really scary and tough decision to make. It’s taken me years to figure out my way back out and around it. To me the difficulties with that has been worth it. This last year has been one of the best of my life creatively. The stuff I’ve gotten to accomplish in the last few years have been thrilling. I feel like I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I still had this entity that was this top priority ». Shears says there’s « no bad blood » between himself and the band (Scott ‘Babydaddy’ Hoffman co-wrote several tracks on his solo album) and « if we come up with a good idea » the ‘Sisters could reactive. Now living between New Orleans and Los Angeles, he’s busy touring his solo album and working on even more new music, including working with Australian writer Jon Hume (Dean Lewis). « One of my goals with this record was that it be viewed in the same body of work as the Scissor Sisters. I feel it is my body of work. It was important to me to be able to play Scissor songs next to these new songs and have them fit together. I feel this album is the spiritual successor to « Ta-Dah! » It takes the ideas I wanted to explore further on « Ta-Dah! » but never quite nailed ». Shears’ refreshingly honest autobiography captures his youth and the early days of the Scissor Sisters, capturing the now-unthinkable days of selling over six million copies of your debut album.

Rather than use his history to sign with a record label, Shears has funded his solo career himself and effectively started his own label. « It’s f---ing hard. It’s taken a lot of money. It’s been really expensive. This is the most expensive record I’ve ever made. I put the whole thing out myself. It’s tough. There’s moments that are discouraging but then it’s one of the things I’m most proud of having made. I have the goal in life now that one of my dreams is I want to be able to make the kind of music I want to make when I want to make it and how I want to make it. That’s not always super easy. There’s not a lot of bands around anymore. Actually figuring out how to put a band on the road playing concerts, it’s pretty wild. Fortunately I’ve been able to do that this last year but it’s not been particularly easy. But when you’re out there playing the shows it’s great. I’ve got a full time saxophone player in my band. Let me tell you, the delight on peoples’ faces when he storms the stage playing a saxophone solo is worth all of it. As hard as it is, it’s moments like that people never forget. To me it’s all about whatever it takes to put on a great show and make great music is what it takes. I could do a whole TED Talk on this! ». After leaving the band, Shears 53 www.kylie-world.com

also found another career — lead role on Broadway in Kinky Boots (he was followed by Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco). « The amount of new skills I learned doing that show has completely changed my approach to doing a show and my relationship with an audience. Just basic movement on stage. I learned so f---ing much that I’ve applied to all sorts of different things. I just shot a movie in September, I’ve been doing things I couldn’t have been able to do without Kinky Boots. It’s taken any kind of stage fright away from me. I feel much more in control of myself on stage, I feel a bigger freedom on stage. It really changed my life. I miss it. I miss the life. I’d love to do more theatre. It opened up a new world to me. It completely changed my life ».
