All the styles I’ve experimented with were just me trying to work out who I was. In the early days, my image was the only part of my career I could get my mitts on, which is why it took such a tumultuous turn. I’m finally feeling comfortable with who I am. That’s age. Kylie Minogue

Hiiiiii lovers !

Let’s start this edition first by wishing a very happy birthday to our favorite Australian, who celebrated her 51st birthday this year! In order to anticipate any expectation from you, this magazine will not be around her birthday but really around the best-of of the singer, which will be released on June 28th. For this occasion, we have prepared a complete focus on the announcement (a bit missed) of this album and the only exclusive song that is extracted from it : « New York City ». Of course, our dear Isa who is the little encyclopedia of this magazine prepared a full throwback on « Finer Feelings », the latest news from Kylie, full interviews from the BBC Radio 2, Graham Norton and the Sunday Times Style but also a new section: sell and buy for the shows with other fans (and with affordable prices). If you are looking for some tickets for Barcelona and Brighton Pride, this is the place to be! Enjoy ! xx Laeti and Isa (With the help of En)

Upon entry in the West German, this confirms that since « I Should Be So Lucky » there had not been a single day where Kylie did not have one of her songs in the top 40. Meanwhile, behind the Iron Curtain in the German Democratic Republic, an EP with Kylie’s hits came out, a few months before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Finer

Feelings

Last month was the 27th anniversary of Kylie’s fourth and last single from her album « Let’s Get To It », and believe me lovers, it’s not just ANY single, it’s « FINER FEELINGS ». The single is - without a doubt - a fan favourite. Originally recorded in May 1991 at the London PWL studios, the song was only released as a single nearly one year later (13th April 1992) after having been remixed by ‘Brothers In Rhythm’. If you read the latest Kylie Times, you’ll know it was meant to be released after « Word Is Out », but was postponed in favour of « If You Were With Me Now » and then « Give Me Just A Little More Time ».

« Finer Feelings » is on the one hand probably Kylie’s least commercial record but on the other hand, probably one of the best tracks of Kylie’s fourth album. « It’s one my least commercial singles. The previous one was very commercial and did very well so I guess some people might say it’s a risk taking another turn but it’s been one of my favourite singles from the album and having ‘Brothers In Rhythm remix’ it, I like it even more so why not release it? The single is quite different to the album version, it’s leaning more towards one of my normal songs but, it will be interesting to see the reactions ». PWL had already been contemplating the idea of releasing this song for a long time, but the actual request came in from the ‘Brothers In Rhythm’ to remix the string-driven swingbeat cut « Finer Feelings », which they considered to be a standout on the album. In case you don’t know, which I very much doubt, the duo ‘Brothers In Rhythm’ was composed of producer Steve Anderson and DJ Dave Sea-

man. They established themselves as one of the UK house scene’s most popular remixing teams, at that time the most in-demand of all British product teams. They remixed songs like « Peace » from Sabrina Johnson, « We All Feel Better In The Dark » from Pet Shop Boys and « We Got A Love Thang » by Ce Ce Peniston. Historically speaking, there was already an existing relationship between PWL and Steve Anderson, as he had already remixed « Step Back In Time » for DJ consumption in late 1990 (it was the actually the very first time that PWL had permitted an outof-house remix of a Kylie track). So when ‘Brothers In Rhythm’ contacted PWL regarding « Finer Feelings », the response was immediately positive. Steve Anderson and David Seaman added layers of ‘Soul II Soul’ accented percussion and subtly tinkling piano to the song and what was already a stand-out album track became a piece of pop perfection, more reflective and beautiful than anything Kylie had ever released before. Restaging « Finer Feelings » as an atmospheric mid-tempo epic with Kylie’s melancholic vocal accompanied by Steve’s piano performance, the new mix was pure genius.

According to Steve Anderson himself: « « Finer Feelings » is one of the best songs SAW ever wrote for Kylie ».

Kylie and Steve

We have to agree with him, this ballad, surely the finest that Stock and Waterman ever touched, is classy, sexy, lush and moving. There is a reference in the song to Marvin Gaye’s 1982 hit « Sexual Healing » which is Kylie’s all-time favourite record from her youth: « I love it and every time I hear it I just feel I have to dance » said Kylie in Smash Hits already in 1988. « It’s a bit raunchy, a bit bluesy… it just attracts me, I suppose ».

Moreover, reportedly, Kylie wanted a song with the word ‘sex’ in it, well to be more specific she wanted the title of the song to have the word sex. Apparently what inspired her that idea was the song « I wanna Sex You Up » by Color Me Bad (released in March 1991), and also the song « Let’s Talk About Sex » by Salt’n’Pepa (released in August 1991). The word sex was just fashionable at the time, but Waterman was having none of it and called the song « Finer Feelings » instead. Kylie does say ‘sex’ in it though, so she partly 9 www.kylie-world.com

Isa, May 2K19

Focus • Finer Feelings won the ‘battle’ let’s say… The lyrics are not raunchy at all though, and not only about sex; they are much deeper than that. They are about the true feelings, the finer ones, without which, all relationships are just basic sex. Kylie seems to be reassessing her life after being hurt by her lover, she is wistful and laments her ex-boyfriend’s failure at meaningful intimacy.

« We didn’t feel Kylie was moving in a direction that would be successful ».

guess we’ll never really know.

When this single was released, Kylie was all over the TV doing interviews and confirmed her contract with PWL was over (even though the team was planning on concluding her deal with a ‘Greatest Hits’ album). She was always asked what she was planning to do next, but she didn’t know yet.

*** At this stage, for sure the magic between Kylie and PWL had evaporated. Some would say everything was coming to a natural end. As said, Waterman didn’t like this new change of direction, and as for Kylie, she just didn’t want to go in the same direction as P. Waterman and M. Stock anymore. David Howells from PWL (now Managing Director at Darah Music) assures that it was PWL’s intention to not renew their contract with her, and not Kylie’s decision :

Lors de la sortie de « Finer Feelings », Kylie était sans cesse inter

Of course, there were reports in the tabloid press about the rumour Kylie asking for two million pounds from any record company who may be interested, but she totally denied the figure (« no figures have been discussed, I’m sorry »). She did confirm that she was discussing with different record companies, including PWL though… ***

KYLIE and BROTHERS IN RHYTHM Kylie loved the cool and contemporary sounds of the « Finer Feelings » remix by ‘Brothers In Rhythm’. Steve and David also realized that Kylie was the perfect person for their dancepop hybrids. So a year later the singer and ‘Brothers In Rhythm’ would collaborate again and a long and successful creative partnership started. But you’ll find out more about that in future editions of the Kylie Times. To conclude though, and as you all know, Steve Anderson was to become one of Kylie’s long-term collaborators, writing many tunes with her over the years, and he is still Kylie’s musical director to this day.

CHARTS Sadly enough, the single missed out on a top 10 placing in the UK. Some say it’s because of its late post-album release, others say it’s because the track was not commercial enough, I 10 www.kylie-world.com

• Its highest chart position was in the UK, where it peaked at #11. • Surprisingly, one of its lowest chart positions was in Australia (#60!). « Finer Feelings » became her lowest charting single there at that point, and remained her only single to miss the Top 50 in Australia until her 2010 single « Get Outta My Way » (which only peaked at #69). Here are the peak positions of the single in other countries/regions: • Ireland: #16 • Slovenia and South Africa: #25 • Europe ‘Hot 100 Singles’: #38 • Germany: #61

Critics Most of the music papers and magazines praised the single at the time. She surprised a few people then although it was quite a natural progression. • Nick Levine (Digital Spy) says it is a ‘hidden gem’ : « At least five tunes of the album are in contention, but « Finer Feelings » sneaks it for showing that Kylie could be sexier and more sophisticated than ever before without skimping on the Isa, May 2K19

chorus. Lyrical nugget: Remember the girl from the Kylie album cover? Well, now she’s posing questions like this: « But what is love / without the finer feelings / It’s just sex / Without the sexual healing ». Poor Pete must have spat out his pasty! ».

famous landmarks. Day one was spent at the Eiffel Tower, the Place Du Trocadero and the path alongside Pont Neuf Bridge. On day 2, it seems that Kylie and Zane (who were still a couple) had planned to go out for a Valentine’s meal but filming went on too late so their plans were cancelled.

The rest of the time, she is in what seems to be a hotel room, rolling on the floor in front of a chimney wearing a sexy outfit.

William Baker in the LaLaLa book : « In « Finer Feelings », Kylie maintained her Hollywood chic in a gorgeous slice of black-andwhite romanticism, based in Paris evocative of the romance of the city captured by photographers Brassaï and Doisneau ».

When in the streets of Paris, she’s wearing a beret (that’s for the « cliché » bit) and a sophisticated black rayon velvet dress and bib trimmed with black rooster feathers. At the very beginning we can see her, with a man (a guy from a French model agency), they’re turning around each other, Kylie looking confused and sad, and him looking like he’s had enough. It looks like they had an argument then she runs away from him.

THE VIDEO Due to the classy, soulful feel to the track, Kylie immediately felt that the ideal location for the video shoot was Paris : « I love Paris. I mean who doesn’t. It’s so beautiful and they have such a great lifestyle! ». And indeed, when seeing the video, the words that immediately come to mind are « Parisian Chic » (and also « cliché » maybe?).

Indeed, the clip was inspired by classic French photography just like the video for « Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi » (except that the JNSPP video was not really filmed in France but in an Australian studio) - one specific reference this time around being Edouard Boubat’s 1949 photograph « Pont Neuf ».

The entirely black and white music video was directed by Dave Hogan (who also directed the videos for « What Do I Have to Do? » and « Shocked ») and, as Kylie wanted, was filmed exclusively in Paris. Kylie was very happy with it, even though she did say it was very tiring to film it. The shooting took place on Valentine’s Day (well actually there were two days of filming: the 13th and 14th February 1992), and mostly early in the mornings to avoid crowds. It has a 1930’s/40’s feel and features many

Pont Neuf – Edouard Boubat Basically, during most of the clip, we see Kylie walking through different places in Paris, looking flawless, chic, beautiful, but also emotional, sad and vulnerable. 11 www.kylie-world.com

At times we can see images of her with him and a young lady – probably their daughter – and then we see the same scene where she’s not in it, and we understand that it’s just her imagination. Can I just say that she looks totally heartbroken, and that I just want to go up to her and cuddle her? After that, she’s going down the stairs of Montmartre with a shopping basket (with two baguettes for the « cliché » bit), and crosses a man coming the opposite way, who then stops when seeing her (struck by her beauty of course). He runs after her and tries to snatch her bag, probably to help her carry it, you know like gentlemen do, but Kylie falls and her groceries just go falling down the stairs (who Isa, May 2K19

Focus • Finer Feelings doesn’t remember those oranges falling down the stairs in slow motion). He picks her up and then goes to get all the groceries at the bottom. Once she gets her basket back, she runs away again.

Bridge or wrapped in a large rug, however she had no choice, filming had to be finished under the pouring rain.

*** The magazine Woman’s day wrote an article about this video and they called it « Kylie Does Dietrich ». They wrote : « Her latest incarnation comes festooned with ostrich feathers on her ‘40s-style coat, lace-up stiletto boots and a saucy beret, inspired by movie legend Marlene Dietrich. But instead of drawing seductively on a cigarette – à la Dietrich - Kylie keeps it clean by sipping sweetly on a fruit juice ». The last part of that statement refers to the single’s artwork.

Then we see her in a café, she’s looking outside, imagining once again she’s with the man and his daughter (the girl is also wearing a beret… maybe the director got a special promo « one beret purchased, one free » ?). And right at the end, while Kylie is still rolling on the floor in front of the chimney, we can see the guy from the stairs in the open door looking at her, he’s coming out of the shower, so we can kind of guess that they didn’t play scrabble just before…

Additionally, rumour has it that Kylie had a shocking experience during the filming of the video, as a man tried to commit suicide in front of her. Apparently she screamed as she saw the man throw himself into the river Seine, before shouting to her crew to rescue him. She would have said : « It was horrifying; I was almost frozen with fear. The guy was saved from drowning and taken to hospital suffering severe shock. It took us a long time before we could continue filming. That moment will stay with me forever ». And to conclude, we talked about Zane and Kylie wanting to go out for dinner on day 2 of the filming, well it just so happens that they broke up shortly after filming this video. Kylie was interviewed by TV Week in May 1992 and declared :

It doesn’t look like it but the filming of the video didn’t happen in the best of conditions! On the first day it was raining and windy, and Kylie spent most of her time sheltering under the Pont Neuf

« It’s been a friendly break-up. In a way it’s good because it’s going to make me concentrate on my work a bit more. I’ve been a little slack lately. It’s hard to tie me down to do things when I’m involved ».

12 www.kylie-world.com

The pictures that were taken during the filming of the video by Katerina Jebb were used for the physical releases. Kat and Kylie were already really good friends at the time (they still are) and when Kylie spoke about Paris, she’s always mention Kat too : « I tend to go to Paris as often as I can because I have a very good girlfriend there, so if I go to Paris I’ll stay with her ». Isa, May 2K19

TV PERFORMANCES

mega sexy in it, her hair and make-up make us think of her « Shocked » video.

Kylie performed the song on Top Of The Pops and Going Live! Both appearances took place the same week but it’s funny to see the difference in Kylie’s style during these shows.

She was also interviewed by Rapido (French TV show) and Gimme Five (UK) about the single but did not actually sing it. Rapido enabled us to take a quick look behind the scenes on the set of the video to this new single.

For the Top Of The Pops performance, she looked really mature and was wearing a blue vintage dress that she had found in a charity shop in Paris. She was actually spotted in a second hand shop the week before the TV shows.

As a kick-start to celebrate this amazing milestone, Kylie released a specially recorded video of the acoustic version of the song, which was first only available to view at Kylie. com. « Finer Feelings » was the first in a series of tracks that were made available periodically during the year 2012. The simple video shows us a brownhaired Kylie with an orchestra. She is breathtaking and her voice is incredible. And it was just the first glimpse at what Kylie has in store for fans in 2012. Jeff Katz from Idolator talked about the Abbey Road Sessions album in November 2012 and said: « Many of the cuts - including « On A Night Like This », « Finer Feelings » and « Confide In Me » - sound ready for placement in a Bond film. Driving drums and suspenseful strings breathe new life into the old favorites. And ever the performer with a knack for the dramatic, there’s an impressive grandness that builds throughout many of the tracks, particularly notable given the album’s lack of high-tech production. ». side, and if clubs pick up this I’d be very happy ».

• The b-side to this single is « Closer », a title that Kylie would use again for another one of her songs several years later, for her album « Aphrodite ».

« I was clubbing a lot last year, I seem to have settled down somewhat but I find I was very influenced last year by the clubs, more so by the people in the clubs and also by music so I definitely think it had an effect on the album that I did last year and am sure will continue to do that because I love going to a good club ».

• Closer was Kylie’s third B-Side to sound electro/house (after « I Guess I Like It Like That » and « Do You Dare » which were respectively b-sides to « If You Were With Me Now » and « Give Me Just A Little More Time »). The track received a positive review from Australian LGBTQIA website Samesame.com.au. • Just like all the other singles from « Let’s Get To It », this single doesn’t feature on the « Ultimate Kylie » compilation. • The black crayon velvet dress from the video (whose designer is unknown), was part of the costumes that Kylie donated to the Arts Centre of Melbourne.

INTERVIEW EXCERPTS FROM THAT TIME « It would be nice to be played in clubs, I think some of my b-sides have been played in clubs which is great because that’s what we intended to have: something that was more typical of me as the A-side and then be a bit more experimental on the B

« The worse thing about growing up is being judged and having many different expectations raised on you. For a start I’m continually asked about “why are you changing?” but I mean it’s nature, if I could stay 18 forever then great but no one can. I would much prefer to be able to do my growing up in private but this is the way it is so I’m just trying to cope with it as best as I can and remember to value the opinions of people that I respect, not someone that’s writing in tabloid papers which is very hard because I think I’m probably more sensitive than a lot of people ». « Around the time of my (Let’s Get To It) tour I was, to say the least, a little disappointed. The tabloids only commented on what I was wearing not so much on what was in my show but there again I have to try and assess it a different way and that is that the people that liked the show had a great time and I was really proud of my show ».

« I think that in England people are just more fanatical than in Australia, and also in Australia I normally just go to my family’s, it’s all very casual, people are also more casual there with me than here in the UK ». 14 www.kylie-world.com

« Yeah I get tired of being compared to Madonna. I’m flattered because it means that they’re putting me on a certain level but I just do get a bit tired of it, that people can’t see that I’m just trying to be myself and create my own image, style and ideas. I admire her, I respect what she’s doing but we’re two very different people ». « Michael definitely influenced me. I actually was forced to show a girlfriend of mine all of my videos the other night and it was absolute torture and we got up to the point where I started seeing Michael, the difference was quite amazing. The ideas didn’t happen overnight I was just making a decision to stick my neck out and actually do it against everyone else’s advice. But he encouraged me to do what I wanted to do, he never said “you should do this or do that” we just really had a great relationship ».

« If I’m working with someone, for example the director on this video for « Finer Feelings », normally I would want to know every step of the way, what the idea is or I would have some ideas of my own which I would put forth to him or her but in this case, or if it’s with a stylist or whoever, someone I know I can fully trust, it’s really nice to let them come up with the concept. If I don’t like it I don’t do it ».

« I would love to do a film and I’m so embarrassed saying that because I did one three years ago and since then I’ve been repeating myself but if that comes around I would be really pleased it’s just a case of finding the right script and having the time to do it. For this year I’m really not sure what’s going to happen. I would love to work with some new people ».

« I think it’s almost frightening the power that soap opera has. It is frightening actually because when I was in Neighbours I had no idea it was having such an effect all over the place. Doctors were changing their surgery hours and secretaries would take longer lunches… ».

LYRICS The finer feelings (x2)

I get passionate, just like you But I have a little self-control You just show your selfish attitude Your emotion leaves me cold

You can’t give to me anything, I couldn’t get for myself I have needs as much as any man And I understand the feelings well

I can still have a true heart With a free mind, a good life With a good time

I can still have a true heart With a free mind, a good life With a good time But what is love without the finer feelings It’s just sex, without the sexual healing Passion dies, without some tender meanings It ain’t love without the finer feelings

NEW YORK CITY

We got to know a little bit about this track last year during one of Kylie’s interviews in the United States. She mentioned she had recorded a song called « New York City » that never made it to the album, and naturally, being in New York City, she sang in a car ride with her team. The fans of course made her sing a bit for them. Following the public’s enthusiasm, Kylie decided to perform it on her promotional tour « Kylie Presents Golden » in New York, where she sang the song almost entirely, and twice in a row as the audience wouldn’t let her carry on with the show. Excerpts filmed by the fans who were there were put up on the internet and the interest of all of us was real - and so Kylie continued performing it. She did a little bit of the song in a version more produced during the « Golden Tour » in a medley with « Raining Glitter » and « On A Night Like This », but again, the track was not full. It was finally on May 3rd that the singer revealed the studio version of this song, having resulted in mixed reviews from fans. Let’s have a look back on the story of this track.

Focus • New York City

THE STORY OF THE SONG We knew that Kylie had worked with many authors for the composition of her album « Golden » (just look at the credits of each tracks), so naturally we realized many songs had not been selected for the album. Among these songs, « New York City », which was unveiled to the public on April 26th, 2018 by Kylie, during her promotion in New York, where she confessed in the show Build Series that she had wrote a track that bore the name of the city and that she had sung in the car with her team the previous day. The presenter obviously encouraged her to sing a few notes of the song, which Kylie did after slightly hesi-

tating. So we had the chance to discover the first verse and the first note of the chorus: « I’m on the first plane to New York, we could do a real time walk that, I’m so tired of that talk, talk, talk, I just wanna get to you. Get me on the road to the big bad city, Boy, I’m going to see you, so pretty, I bet you can not wait, I just wanna get to you. Things heat up when the lights go down, Feels so good when we’re in this town, Dreams come true when the distance fades away... New York City! ». Kylie said that the song probably sounded very bad without music, but she had started a lot of tracks for this album that she never finished. Of course, the excerpt sung by our Australian went around the internet on the fans side, and we all wanted to hear more! And we had to wait until June 25th before we could hear the first notes of « New York City » live at Bowery Ballroom... in New York! Kylie could not choose a bet-

ter place to interpret this track in this city. However, she chose to make a shorter version than the final version, but hey, we did not know it because we had never heard the studio version. All the fans commented this live version, starting saying that they wanted to hear the version recorded by the singer in the studio and that she should release this song as a single... The real production of the song could be heard during the « Golden Tour », where the singer made a medley dedicated to the Studio 54, a mythical club of... New York! We see all her dancers disguised as different mythical characters of the time, with for example Andy Warhol who throws money into the crowd... Kylie arrives by the doors of the studio (if you go to New York, know that this door is still there and that you can enter in the club hall, where you will still see the chandeliers and disco balls of the time). The version of the tour is quite short and only lasts a minute, time to make the first verse and continue with the chorus, but it remains one of the favorite moments of the fans during the « Golden Tour », either for this song or for the medley. And despite us all still waiting for the DVD of the tour, it’s finally on May 3rd that the singer unveiled the studio version of the track, on the BBC Radio 2 in exclusivity. This is the first single from Kylie’s bestof, which will be released on June 28th. First single and only exclusive track on this album. The song was written by our Australian, Daniel Edward Stein and Karen Poole and produced by Daniel Edward Stein. This name may not tell you anything like that, but it is in fact the complete identity of someone Laeti, May 2K19

well known in England: DJ Fresh. If in the chorus we find the production and the voice of Kylie as we heard on the tour, the verses were a little weird during the first listening of it, the voice of Kylie having some effects added: it seems that the singer is far and sings in a jar... It’s quite strange to hear it like that because we used to have her « normal » voice whether during the first live in New York or during the tour. There is also the break at 2’17min which is the moment that surprised us the most and we appreciated the most in the song. We also note the sample of « Drop The Pressure » by Mylo. If you do not know this song, go listen to it, you will easily find common points!

CRITICS On social networks, the reviews were quite mixed on the side of the fans. We had people who loved this new version of the track, and those who found that her voice was too modified, and we had those who were disappointed to have as exclusive song a track that was already known to us. Contrary to all expectations, most of the people on the SayHey forum are happy to have this studio version of the song and find it great (it’s so rare that we prefer to specify it even though we’ve seen comments such as ‘cheap and nasty song’... It would not be SayHey if there was no negativity!).

of Blondie’s « Rapture » ». • Mike Wass (Idolator) : « The track is a charming leftover from the « Golden » era. Or more specifically, the dance-pop album Kylie started recording before touching down in Nashville. As much as I love Golden, it’s nice to have Kylie back where she belongs (i.e. on the dance floor) ». • Quentin Harrison (Albumism): « New York City » reflects a larger conundrum Minogue has faced in the last 15 years—whether or not to solely make dance-pop tracks versus pop songs. In its original form, « New York City » showed that Minogue could do both as she combined live band elements with contemporary technology to yield something accessible for her dancefloor faithful, while not alienating the broader pop constituency she’s developed too. Her forthcoming « best of » set that « New York City » dwells upon confirms that she’s made a career of balancing her discothèque proclivities and her larger musical appetites; this suggests then that a portion of her base may need to evolve with the singer-songwriter instead of trying to constrict her to one genre space. As it stands, « New York City » is a functional and fun effort, though one hopes it isn’t a sign of total retreat from the artistic furtherance Minogue embraced with Golden.

In the press, here is what we noted: • Joe Lynch (Billboard) : « It was clear within seconds why Kylie left it off the Nashville-tinged 2018 album: it’s a funky, disco-meetsfreestyle strutter that sounds straight out of an early ‘80s Manhattan club, complete with a cheeky rapped portion with flavors 23 www.kylie-world.com

charts In the charts, the song was doing pretty good at the beginning cause many people have pre-ordered the album. Here is a summary of the rankings of the week: • Australia : #38 • Belgium : #36 • France : #91 • Scotland : #31 • England : #26

THE MUSIC VIDEO Many of you were expecting exclusive footage of this song’s music video. After the preview of a few seconds broadcasted on the television show Lorraine, it is finally a music video where we relive the best moments of the « Golden Tour » which was unveiled to the public on May 9th on the YouTube channel of the singer. The video was shot during the last two concerts of the European tour in Dublin and Belfast. We see the singer during the disco medley, as well as images of the audience and behind the scenes, enough to remind us of the good memories of the tour... for which we are still waiting for a DVD! Currently, the video has 718,000 views on YouTube.

Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection We all knew it was going to happen and that a best-of was on its way. It was on May 3rd that Kylie Minogue officially announced the release of it, a rather hectic one let’s say, with the only exclusive single of this opus is « New York City » studio version... And that caused many reactions by the fans who immediately got divided into two groups. The announcement, the setlist, the only new song, the different versions, the release of this best-of scheduled for June 28th, these were all huge topics for the fans who either loved it or hated it. We have of course decided to make a special focus on this album for this edition of the Kylie Times, and we will have a look back at all these huge topics again and tell you at the end which group we are. And of course, we asked you what you think about « New-York City » and on the tracklisting of this best-of.

Focus • Step Back In Time : The Definitive Collection

THE BEST-OF ANNOUNCEMENT We knew that a best-of would come out soon, but the dates of the announcement were not known. It all started when several rumors appeared on the internet about Kylie’s presence on BBC Radio 2 and the Graham Norton show on Friday, May 3rd. Who says promo says an announcement to do. We all thought of Glastonbury or the launch of a new track - and most likely the first single that would be released from the best-of album, especially after seeing that four new tracks had been deposited to be registered on a copyright side. In the end, on April 26th, Kylie’s website was put offline, before revealing a countdown. All the profile photos of the singer’s social networks were changed, highlighting a picture of «Step Back In Time ». The announcement was clear: Kylie was going to announce the release of her best-of. The colors of the site were updated, and when we conducted a small analysis of the code of the website we noticed there was a secret code written in it: « Pop Precision Since 1987 »... The name of the best-of? While we were all wondering what was waiting for us, several people had problems with the countdown clock in the website. The hours did not correspond with the others, announcing for some 11 am, and for other friends 8 am, some even saw a different date... This problem was solved after two days, and the date was well fixed on May 3rd at 8am for all. The more the days passed, the more we wondered if « Rose Is A Rose » was going to be the lead single of this best-of... In the next days, other rumors surfaced that Kylie was going to release an exclusive

duet with Dolly Parton, but the real rumor relayed by certified accounts on Twitter was that the singer was going to release the studio version of « New York City ». Many fans were disappointed as they wanted an exclusive track, others were happy and hoped to have a great official video. On April 30th, a new typography appeared on the site of the singer with a clock and the slogan that had been seen in the code before: « Pop Precision Since 1987 ». Meanwhile, the countdown reloaded the timing from one day to another two days before it was meant to reach 0. That was thankfully the last change of it. On May 1st, the tracklisting had already leaked on the internet… And we had the answer about what was the lead single, « New York City ». The following day followed the leak of the different formats and the name of the best-of, as well as the visuals. And in the end, at midnight Kylie revealed the surprise on her social medias, which unfortunately was no longer one: the release of the bestof « Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection ». In her tweet,

The countdown on Kylie’s website

Kylie said that this best-of would be released on June 28th, just before her concert at Glastonbury, and that her summer tour will celebrate the biggest tracks of her career. The countdown was no longer really interesting because the surprise was unveiled as the tracklisting, and everyone knew that « New York City » would be the only exclusive single from album. Note also that if Kylie made her announcement on her social networks, the person in charge of the singer’s community management also takes care of the Spice Girls account. Do you

No songs from the festive album Kylie Christmas or reworkings collection The Abbey Road Sessions are included, while there’s also no representation from Kylie’s Kiss Me Once album which included the Number 12-charting Into The Blue. Top 40 hit Timebomb appears on a worldwide-released album for the very first time, while also included is Your Disco Needs You, Kylie’s most popular song that was not released as a single in the UK.

kylie minogue is back with a best-of chartsinfrance.com A year after « Golden », Kylie Minogue decides to come back on her career with a new best-of, entitled « Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection ». An unpublished track called « New York City » will be released tomorrow! - By Théau Berthelot Last year, Kylie Minogue played the cowgirl with a cowboy hat. As Lady Gaga(« Joanne ») or Kesha (« Rainbow ») before her, the Australian let her country side speak on « Golden », the 14th album that sounded like a huge challenge for the singer. Unfortunately, the record has not been synonymous with gold rush with barely 200,000 worldwide sales. Only the United Kingdom remains a faithful market for the star since more than 100,000 copies of « Golden » found buyers, in parallel with a tour that led to the O2 Arena or the Seine Musicale in our country. Just one year after this release, Kylie Minogue decides to follow up with a new compilation, the twelfth, retracing her 30-year career: « Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection ». Expected for June 28, this « collection of Kylie’s most beloved tracks is a reflection of her record-breaking career », the statement said. On the program, fans will be

able to discover 42 tracks: you will find the hits that have made its success, from « Can’t Get You Out of My Head » to « All the Lovers » through « I Should Be So Lucky »; but also the singles of her last album (« Golden », « Stop Me From Falling », « Dancing »). There will also be her famous covers of Kool and the Gang (« Celebration ») or Little Eva (« The Loco-Motion ») and a track in French: « Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi», dating from 1988. Finally, last surprise, Kylie Minogue recorded a new song, « New York City » to discover this Friday. Fans already know the song since the artist performed it for the first time in New York last June before including it in a medley of her « Golden Tour ». But they can finally hear it in its studio version and complete. That’s good, this new best-of will arrive at the correct moment for the start of the summer tour of the star. For the first time, Kylie Minogue will perform at a few festivals. If no show is planned in France, the popstar will be at Rock Werchter (Belgium) on June 28th and then at the legendary Glastonbury festival two days later in the UK.

KYLIE performed in venice

O

n May 18th, the singer traveled to Venice for a private concert. At the beginning and when we saw the first pictures of Kylie in the city, we thought that the singer was making a stop before going to the Cannes Film Festival. In the end, Kylie came with her entire team for two days as part of a private event. She sang for the 60 years birthday party of Philip Spanton, CEO of the brand BrandLoyalty, in front of many guests. They lodged and saw the show at Belmond Hotel Cipriani. Logically enough, very few videos and photos leaked on the internet since it was a private concert, but we know that Kylie sang her greatest hits, including « All The Lovers ».

Kylie in the press • May

Kylie Minogue’s Top 10 most popular non-singles revealed Officialcharts.com Pop Precision! Kylie Minogue has announced her new greatest hits album Step Back In Time. While we wait for the clock to tick down to June 28, we’re going to whet your appetites by revealing Kylie’s biggest non-singles for the first time. Which album tracks that didn’t get the single treatment in the UK have you downloaded and streamed the most? - By Jack White Your Disco Needs You We're kicking off with a fan favourite that Kylie never released in the UK. Despite being given a single release in her native Australia and Germany, this Robbie Williams co-write from the Light Years album never saw the light of day on our shores. Despite that, it does have a music video, and Kylie has performed it on numerous tours over the years. One of the prime examples of Kylie's signature disco-pop sound, Your Disco Needs You has been downloaded 20,000 times and has received 1.07 million streams.

Love Affair Kylie's Fever era was perhaps her most successful, spawning a Number 1 album that produced four Top 10 singles, and a million-seller. With that in mind, Love Affair had some serious competition to be promoted to

single status - perhaps it was in an another timeline and surpassed the Number 8 peak of Come Into My World. Love Affair is Kylie's second biggest non-single and shifted 16,400 digital downloads. Raining Glitter An instant-grat track for Kylie's most recent album campaign, Raining Glitter is the most popular song which is not one of the five singles from the Number 1 record Golden. While Sincerely Yours is the most streamed song from Golden, Raining Glitter has over 1,000 more digital downloads and boasts 1.2 million streams of its own.

Also in the Top 10 is Beautiful, Kylie's collaboration with Enrique Iglesias which was released only as a promotional single in Australia.

Kylie Minogue reveals how dark ex michael hutchence ‘opened up whole new world’ to her express.co.uk KYLIE MINOGUE has spoken about her relationship with late ex boyfriend Michael Hutchence, who died in 1997 at the age of 37, in a candid new interview where she spilled the INXS frontman ‘opened up a whole new world’ to her. - By Lauren Meechan Kylie Minogue, 50, dated Michael Hutchence for two years in the late 1980s. In a new film titled, Mystify: Michael Hutchence, which was directed by the late singer’s friend Richard Lowenstein, the hitmaker called her former boyfriend a « dark bad boy ». The Australian features in the movie and said the star, who died by suicide in 1997, « opened up a whole new world for her ». « Sex, love, food, drugs, music, travel, books, you name it, he wanted to experience it », Kylie said of the musician. « If you’re a sensual being, all of your senses need stimulation. He definitely awakened my desire for things in my world ». The star said: « He had insatiable curiosity, all the good things in life and some [of] the bad ». Kylie added: « He opened up a whole new world for me. A lot of it was based around pleasure, let’s face it ». The former Neighbours actress called their relationship « loving, yet sad, but was probably doomed ». Kylie and Michael are believed to have first met each other when she went to watch him perform with INXS. The Can’t Get You Out of My Head chart-topper

addressed the end of their relationship and said Michael looked like a « broken man ». « He was on all fours on the floor crying », she claimed. « I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know what was happening ». The documentary features unseen footage of Michael, as well as U2 star Bono and Helena Christensen. It made its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York last month and is set to air on BBC Two. Before Kylie got together with Michael, the star was dating Jason Donovan, 50. The singer recently opened up about their break-up and admitted it was « painful » as Kylie moved on with Michael. The theatre star told The Mirror: « It was an extremely painful parting of the ways and, without doubt, I took a long time to recover from it. Years, definitely. It was bad enough that she’d run off with anybody, but she happened to run into the arms of the greatest rock god of the period, the very guy who I secretly wanted to be. That was a pretty big punch to take », he added. Kylie is now dating Paul Solomons, 43, following on from her split with ex-fiancé Joshua Sasse in 2017.

Kylie in the press • May Kylie Minogue, 50, first shot to fame playing the role of Charlene Robinson on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, back in 1986. Having made her debut on the small screen as an actor, she later made the move to songwriting. Hits including Can’t Get You Out of My Head, I Should Be So Lucky, and the Loco-Motion saw her earn the title, Princess of Pop. During her successful career, Kylie has performed some incredible and fast-paced routines while singing on the stage. And, in the past, she has been asked about how she maintains her fitness. In an interview with the Daily Express back in 2017, she explained that she didn’t have a strict exercise routine. Instead, Kylie leads a very active lifestyle. « I don’t really work out, but I’m constantly on the go », she said. Every now and then, she attends a Pilates session, the star added.

cise had changed over the years. In the past, she had a much greater interest in fitness. She remembered: « I loved aerobics and I used to do callanetics. I would travel everywhere with this home workout on a VHS tape and put it on in hotel rooms ». Kylie also explained that she didn’t follow a restrictive diet plan, but did opt for healthy choices. She has also become interested in following a low-GI diet quite some time ago, which she said « works for her ». « I haven’t had it confirmed by a doctor, but I’m pretty sure I’m hypoglycaemic », she also revealed. « Which means I need to eat more regularly than most people ». Earlier this week, Kylie delighted fans as she announced she was celebrating some of her most famous tracks with the new album Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection. Tonight, she will appear on The Graham Norton Show. In the past, Kylie has revealed a dating tip which she goes by on a date.

But amidst the excitement, it’s also a reminder of when the singer was forced to pull out of the 2005 show because she was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. - By Katrina Turrill

Kylie Minogue, 50, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2005, at the age of 36. The news led to the postponement of the remainder of her Showgirl - The Greatest Hits Tour, as well as her withdrawal from Glastonbury Festival. After undergoing treatment and surgery the star was given the all-clear, but three years later she revealed doctors had mistakenly given her the all-clear before her diagnosis. She spoke of the « misdiagnosis » for the first time on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in the US. « Listen, this is an opportunity for me to say something I have not said before. I was misdiagnosed initially », she said. « So my message to all of you and everyone at home is, because someone is in a white coat and using big medical instru-

ments doesn’t necessarily mean they are right ». Kylie performed part of her Showgirl tour having been for a check and being told everything was fine. She had a mammogram but nothing was found, then a couple of weeks later she found a lump. The singer then underwent a lumpectomy where it was discovered she had breast cancer. Kylie continued on the Ellen DeGeneres Show: « If you have any doubt, go back again ». Kylie didn’t reveal who she’d been given the all-clear by, but later released a statement which read: « I have a great respect for the medical profession and the numerous, in

fact, countless, people who helped me on my road back to health. I am in the very best of hands now, but it is a fact that my initial diagnosis was that I was, 'Alright, and had nothing to worry about’. A few weeks later this was clearly not the case. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is the key for any woman diagnosed with breast cancer ». Her spokesman said the singer had made the « bold » statement « to let people know she believes one should trust one’s instincts and not be afraid to seek a second opinion ». Kylie completed her chemotherapy treatment in France, and in 2008 France’s then culture minister Christine Albanel said: « Doctors now even go as far as saying there is a Kylie effect that encourages young women to have regular checks ». Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. Figures by the NHS say one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. The

health body goes on to outline the symptoms: • A new lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast that was not there before • A change in the size or shape of one or both breasts • Bloodstained discharge from either of your nipples • A lump or swelling in either of your armpits • Dimpling on the skin of your breasts • A rash on or around your nipple • A change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast • It adds: The first symptom of breast cancer most women notice is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in their breast. Breast pain isn’t usually a symptom of breast cancer. Most breast lumps aren’t cancerous, but it’s always best to have them checked by your doctor.

from hot pants to burlesque : the five decades of kylie minogue fashion image.ie Kylie Minogue has managed to do the impossible since she first appeared on our screens in the 1970s - remain relevant and successfully reinvent herself time and time again. Amanda Cassidy looks at why, five decades later, we can't get Kylie out of our heads. - By Amanda Cassidy It is no exaggeration to say that it was the wedding of dreams. It was 1985 and we collectively gasped (along with the other 20 million viewers) as Charlene married her sweetheart Scott after one of the most documented love stories in soap opera history (They were dating in real life). We slow-danced as teens to Especially for You, we bopped to the Locomotion and begged our hairdressers for the same golden perm. Three decades later, we cheered once more as Kylie came back with a bang, her gold hotpants heralding her new dawn her glittering career once again in the spotlight. She’s survived cancer and dated

models 19 years younger. She’s sold over 80 million records and performed at some landmark events, including the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She’s even launched her own lingerie and range of bed linen. Last year, Kylie Minogue celebrated a major milestone birthday with a star-studded guest list including Alan Carr, Graham Norton, Amanda Holden and even her former Neighbours star Jason Donovan. Now, she has announced a new greatest hits album, Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection which will be released in June. We can expect to hear 42 of Kylie’s signature songs including The Locomotion and million-selling Can’t Get You Out Of My Head. But how has the girl from Down Under so successfully reinvented herself over and over again?

be known only by their first name but she was just 11 when she made her first TV appearance on the popular soap, The Sullivans and Skyways. Kylie played a Dutch girl called Carla and was involved for six episodes. A shy child originally from Melbourne, Kylie has spoken in the past about her difficulties in making friends during her school years. She took time out of school for filming, against her parent’s wishes but admits her real passion was always in music. 1980s In 1985, Kylie was cast as one of the lead roles in The Henderson Kids - she was dropped from the second season of the show after her character was ‘written off’. Producer of the show, Alan Hardy went onto say that it ‘turned out to be the best thing for her’. Indeed, Kylie admits that it was the catalyst for her to focus on her music. She made a demo tape for a weekly music programme called Young Talent Time (her sister, Dannii was a regular performer on it) and Laeti, May 2K19

Kylie in the press • May Kylie gave her first TV singing performance on the show. Not long after, she was cast in the iconic soap opera, Neighbours as Charlene Robinson. 1990s By the mid-90s, Kylie had successfully managed to shed her innocent tomboy Charlene image. She switched up her hairstyle bringing the cropped style back into fashion. By now, all eyes were on her lovelife - especially after her high profile break-up with Jason Donovan. She started dating Michael Hutchence and started touring internationally. By 1997, Kylie was in a relationship with French photographer Stephane Sednaoui who encouraged her to develop her creativity. Again, her image changed from bubble-gum pop to something a little edgier. 2000s The result of being slightly riskier paid off. Her 2001 hit ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ went on to become the most played tune of the decade. She had reinvented disco - but with a

sparkle. This was the era of the gold hotpants which saw Kylie spinning around. She incorporated Burlesque and theatre and brought back the showgirl style of Broadway shows like 42nd Street. Her performances were OTT and extravagant. Her fans loved it. Kylie’s love life looked more stable too - she started a long-term relationship with the actor, Olivier Martinez and even appeared in Doctor Who. But in 2005, Kylie postponed her Showgirl Greatest Hits Tour after a devastating diagnosis - she was 36 years old and had breast cancer. The survivor survived. 2010s This is the decade that saw Kylie Minogue named as one of the hottest women of all time by Men’s Health. The pop star now had a net worth of around 55 million pounds. Now in her 40s, Kylie had also embraced her status as a gay icon. She told reporters « I am not a traditional gay icon. There’s been no tragedy in my life, only tragic outfits » and « My gay audience has been with me from the beginning... they kind of adopted me ». Kylie ad-

mitted that she was really touched to have such an appreciative crowd. Her love life continued to be turbulent. In November 2015, Minogue confirmed she was dating British actor Joshua Sasse. In fact, the couple announced their engagement in 2016 but by 2017 it was all off. What’s next? But despite being unlucky in love, the singer shows no signs of slowing down. She successfully launched her 14th studio album, Golden which has already made number one in Australia and the UK. She partied the night away at her 50th looking stunning in a white dress and strappy shoes along with her nearest and dearest. This pop chameleon took to social media to acknowledge her milestone birthday last year with new confidence, tweeting : « And so a new decade begins. How thankful I am for the opportunities life has afforded me. 50... Let’s go! ». Something tells us she won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

KYLIE MINOGUE IS GLOWING. Of course she is. As the blue-eyed, blonde princess of pop music and golden girl of pop culture, idolised by millions since the 1980s, Minogue, I imagine, floats around in a perpetual state of looking luminous. She has also been dancing in front of our photographer for an afternoon and, as she puts it, « should be glowing after all that make-up! » It’s not just the make-up. On the brink of releasing a new album, the gig of her career, her 51st birthday and with the thrill of a new man, she is happy. « I could say nothing and you could read everything », she laughs, pointing to her smiling face. « I’ve met someone who I feel good with. It feels right ». Post-shoot, Minogue sits upright and cross-legged on a sofa in our east London studio, her 5ft frame wrapped in a barely-there slip dress. Much has been written about her dabbles with Botox, something she admitted in 2009, but today she looks beautiful and natural — faint lines on her face, yet still miles younger than 50. She speaks so softly that I strain to hear her and she answers many questions with a giggle. On the surface, dainty and delicate. Underneath, nerves of steel. « None of this was handed to me », she says, « but this was my destiny. I was meant to do it ». 49 www.kylie-world.com

Interview • The Sunday Times Style The first music I remember was a 1989 VHS tape of Kylie’s videos. Aged five, I watched nothing else for months. Fever (2001) and Aphrodite (2010) — the CDs scratched from overuse — made up much of the soundtrack to my clubbing twenties. Interviewing her is an excruciating test, as I attempt to maintain professionalism while trying not to touch her face. (Full disclosure: when we hug at the end, I scream a bit. She doesn’t mind.) But aren’t we all Team Kylie? In 2005, when, at the age of 36, she revealed her breast cancer diagnosis, support from fans and the press came in floods. When her highly public relationships end, it is always her the world sides with. She is, perhaps, the only non-Brit considered a « national treasure » by the tabloids — The Sun ran a campaign in the early Noughties to have her bottom listed as a World Heritage Site on the grounds it was an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Brand Kylie has mastered the near impossible: triumphing for three decades, with goldand platinum-certified records, scandal-free and to global adoration. She’s still considered both a reigning disco diva and a bubbly, Aussie girl next door. Underestimate her at your peril, though. Being Kylie, she says, « takes a lot of work, graft and insecurity — not always what the wrapped-up end product looks like. There have been times when I’ve thought, ‘I just can’t.’ But you’ve got to take the knocks because they’re always coming. It ain’t all roses ». A pause. « But maybe otherwise it wouldn’t be as sweet in the end ». She values her private life as « precious », and admits that she has « sacrificed some anonymity », no doubt because her romances have been tabloid fodder for years. Her most high-profile relationship was with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence from 1989 to 1991. In 1997, long after they broke up, he committed suicide. For four years, she dated the French actor Olivier Martinez, who supported her through her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy (« Olli was there all the time », she said in 2006). They broke up in 2007, but were rumoured to have reignited their romance in 2017, claims that she has never addressed. Then there was an engagement to the British actor Joshua Sasse. The two started dating in 2015 and that December she told Desert Island Discs that Sasse, then 28, was « my love ». They announced their engagement in February 2016, but broke up 12 months later; last September, he married an Australian entrepreneur. It strikes me as sad, but her steeliness quickly reappears. You’ve had your heart broken, I begin. « I don’t know about heartbroken », she flashes. « I’ve made mistakes ». Such as? « I regret lying to myself. Like, ‘This is OK,’ and doing the merry dance. When that honest bit inside of you knows, but you’re busy covering it up? I regret doing that. It’s not fair on yourself. And yet I think we’ve all been there, we’ve all done it. But I don’t see myself doing it again. I’ve met someone who I feel good with ». She has been dating Paul Solomons, the 45-year-old creative director of British GQ, for just over a year. When talk turns to him, she lights up. « I can feel my face going », she says. « People say, ‘Your face changes when you talk about him,’ and it does. Happiness. He’s an inspiring, funny, talented guy. He’s got a real-life actual job! It’s lovely ». Their weekends are generally spent in her Knightsbridge home, watching documentaries on Netflix — « We liked the Ted Bundy Tapes. I was too scared to watch them on my own » — or listening to podcasts — « Have you heard Dear Joan & Jericha [Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine’s mock agony-aunt podcast]? I’ve literally creased myself to that, it’s so inappropriate ». He does most of the 52 www.kylie-world.com

cooking. « He’s got me cooking too, actually. He’s the first to do that. It can no longer be the family joke that I can’t cook ». Her family are all still in Australia. Her parents, Ron and Carol, worked as an accountant and dancer respectively, and her younger sister, Dannii, followed in Kylie’s showbiz footsteps as a pop star. She also has a younger brother, Brendon. They are a close family who text daily and speak frequently. I imagine they are overprotective about any new boyfriends. Minogue tells me that the first time Solomons met her clan was spending last Christmas with them. « They [already] could tell I was good within myself. They liked him before they met him, and they liked him more after they met him ». Her Australian accent is still distinctive, but she has lived in London since the early 1990s, when Soho was her stomping ground. « I was really deep in London nightlife back then », she says. Now, generally, the only time she’s up until the early hours is when she’s on tour. Her last big night out was her 50th birthday party, a year ago, at Chiltern Firehouse, complete with performances by Rick Astley and Jake Shears. « I went to bed at about 5am, but probably had no more than a glass of champagne all night. I was talking and dancing and high on life. The icing on the cake was that I had my special someone to share it with ». It’s remarkable that Minogue has the stamina to dance until 5am at an age when many women are experiencing the menopause. Indeed, she’s already been there, done that. As is common with younger breast cancer patients, her menopause was medically induced when she had treatment, to suppress her oestrogen levels. On Desert Island Discs, she stated that she would love to start a family. It’s a difficult subject to broach, but I wonder if she feels the chance to have children has passed. « I can definitely relate to that », she answers. « I was 36 when I had my diagnosis. Realistically, you’re getting to the late side of things. And, while that wasn’t on my agenda at the time, [cancer] changed everything. I don’t want to dwell on it, obviously, but I wonder what that would have been like. Everyone will say there are options, but I don’t know. I’m 50 now, and I’m more at ease with my life. I can’t say there are no regrets, but it would be very hard for me to move on if I classed that as a regret, so I just have to be as philosophical about it as I can. You’ve got to accept where you are and get on with it ». Born and raised in Melbourne, she attended acting school in her home town and became a superstar at 18 as Charlene in the Isa, May 2K19

Interview • The Sunday Times Style Australian soap Neighbours. Charlene’s wedding to Jason Donovan’s Scott in 1987 was witnessed by 20m viewers in the UK. Despite no formal singing or dancing training, she left the show to pursue music, and her debut album, Kylie, released in 1988, was No 1 in the UK for six weeks. She has since released 13 more studio albums, as well as dozens of compilation, live and remix records. Next month she is releasing Step Back in Time, her latest greatest hits album. All the big hitters are on there: Spinning Around, I Should Be So Lucky, Confide in Me. She doesn’t have a favourite, but points to Where the Wild Roses Grow (1995) and All the Lovers (2010) — « just glorious ». She had to brace herself, she says, to listen to some of the older tracks. « I recorded Locomotion when I was 18 or 19. I was so young and I felt so young ». She shakes her head in bewilderment. Minogue has just finished the Golden Tour, six months of shows in Europe and Australia. « I don’t know how much time I’ve got before my showbiz hips and knees start to protest », she laughs. « They’ll be like, ‘You’ve been treading those boards for a long time, we think you should slow down a bit’». This summer, along with gigs in London, Manchester and even Scarborough, she will take to the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in the Sunday afternoon « legends » slot, previously filled by the likes of Dolly Parton, Barry Gibb and Lionel Richie. It is particularly poignant as she was set to perform there in 2005, but her cancer diagnosis meant that she had to pull out. She sang at the festival in 2010, as a guest of the Scissor Sisters, but has never performed solo. « I’m bound to cry », she says. On stage? « It’s going to happen. When I was meant to be there, I watched it from Australia. I was dealing with much bigger things back then, but when I’m there it will take me back to when I wasn’t there. But I’ll work through that ». She confirms there will be guests joining her on stage, but won’t tell me who. Dolce & Gabbana designed the Greek goddess-inspired costumes for her Aphrodite: Les Folies tour in 2011, but her on-stage style now is « more human, more real ». « But even Elvis had a few diamantés on him », she continues. « Come on! I’m thinking of it as a big sing-along. It’s daytime, so you can’t have the lights, effects and lasers that I normally have. I think the simplicity is part of what makes that slot so magical. Dolly Parton just walked on out. Lionel Richie just walked on out. I mean, I’ll sashay on out ». Minogue’s manager then intervenes. The car is waiting and the star has somewhere to be. « I keep threatening my team that I’m going to retire », she winks, safe in the knowledge that there are decades left of her career. And, with that, she sashays out. Glowing. Step Back in Time is released on June 28

Interview • Graham Norton

graham norton MAY 3RD, 2019 uk Kylie was the guest on Graham Norton's show on May 3rd to talk about her new Greatest Hits album which will be released on June 28th and her summer shows. She was invited alongside Keanu Reeves, Suranne Jones, Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell and Michael Rice. GN: This pop icon has sold over 80 million albums, has a Grammy, three Brit Awards to her name and now she’s celebrating 30 amazing years in the business. Please welcome Kylie Minogue. Do you know everybody? Keanu, do you know Kylie Minogue? KR: I do yeah! Actually when I was filming The Matrix in 1998 you would come out with an album at this time… KM: Was it… Impossible…?! Impossible Princess. KR: Impossible Princess yeah! You were everywhere! KM: Did we meet then? KR: We might have been meeting, passing, something at a… KM: Great to see you! (She opens her arms to hug him) KR: Nice to see you! GN: So did Kylie appear in Rocket Man? TE x JB: No. Why not? No. KM: Why not? That’s a very good question! TE x JB: No actually, and this is totally unplanned, the director of Rocket Man is sat in the audience, he’s called Dexter Fletcher and he is in one of Kylie’s music video. KM: Dexter Fletcher!!! Oh my goodness! TE x JB: I forgot the name of the song? Dexter, stand up! KM: Oh my gosh! Actually we go back a long way. GN: Which video did he do? KM: A video called Some Kind Of Bliss and we were just running around in Spain and it was a lot of fun. DF: It was a lot of fun. Two days in Spain just driving around in a car with Kylie, just acting like, well trying to act like I was cool. KM: You were very cool! GN: And of course then your other connection… is you have duetted with Elton John! KM: I did, a long time ago. GN: I think it was 1995. KM: Oh my gosh, OK. GN: Yeah, at the Royal Albert Hall. Did you know that Sir Elton John would look like this? (He shows a picture of Elton dressed as a woman with a blonde wig).

KM: To be specific he went as Donatella Versace. Did I

know? I think I knew. But can one fully prepare themselves for that. GN: No, no, no one cannot. Beautiful. And now this is a big weekend for Kylie and Kylie Minogue fans, because you’re announcing a new album. KM: Sort of yeah, a Greatest Hits album, which turns out to be far more emotional than I had anticipated. GN: Because this is your Definitive Greatest Hits. KM: Yes! Although there wasn't enough room for all of them so there are a couple missing. GN: OK, so it’s out on the 28 of June but people can pre-order it now. I’ve got it here, look everybody, it’s Step Back In Time! I was looking and I thought there were all on? KM: Well almost. GN: Suranne Jones what are you looking for? SJ : Oh it has to be Especially For You. GN x KM: We’ve got that, we’ve got that. Tick! TE : Lucky, right? KM: Yes TE : Of course GN: Oh yes JB: Locomotion GN: It’s here! KM: They’re all here! AUDIENCE SAYING YEEEEEAAAAH

GN: You know what, let’s have a look, we’ve got a montage of just a few of Kylie’s hit. VIDEO CLIPS * I Should Be So Lucky / Step Back In Time / Spinning Around / Can’t Get You Out Of My Head / Love At First Sight / Slow / All The Lovers / Dancing *

GN: Wow, it’s amazing, really amazing. You’re one of those people who’s always working on the next thing, the next album… KM: Yeah GN: What is like to kind of stop and take stock? KM: It's positively weird and as I said before it's emotional, I mean... Just looking at those few clips I could bore you senseless with stories about the day that I did the song or we had to you know fight for weeks to get the song or do

the video or the first time I’ve performed it live. I mean it’s just a lot to take in. GN: Yeah, but also I think it taps into an audience’s memory of 30 years. KM: That’s what I was hoping as that was played and that's the joy of it, put aside my emotional part of it. And pride, I definitely have pride, some embarrassment of course but I do hope that it takes the audience on a journey as well because it marks so many… I mean it’s thirty one years’ worth there so… GN: Yeah and this album with all these hits, you’re taking it on tour! KM: Oh I am yeah! Thanks for reminding me Graham! GN: I hope that wasn’t news! Like « what » ? KM: I’ve got a bunch of summer shows coming up yeah! GN: And is this be going to be like a full-on Kylie show or will it be fairly stripped back or how is it? KM: It will be pretty full. I mean festival shows are slightly different because that's the stage you can really do not much more with it. You don't get a soundcheck you just like rock up, pray and hope everything goes fine. So we’ll try and put it up on there. GN: Yeah. And you're doing your first solo Glastonbury. KM: Yeah… Every time it’s mentioned… I did a phone interview yesterday and I was just, just taking a little sip among the conversation and the word Glastonbury came up and I just about spat my coffee. It's a huge deal for me. GN: Why is that one so scary or so big for you? KM: Because we’re all talking about it! I guess for me, you know it's been… I was meant to headline Glastonbury in 2005 and I couldn't. I had a diagnosis then which stopped me doing that. So the road to Glastonbury has been… I think if you're going to get the legends slot it's been a long road anyway. But you know it's been a long and winding road with a few speed humps along the way.

GH : Yeah... So we're celebrating your career, tonight, 30 glorious years, I think people have an idea that once you've arrived, show business is lovely and that's how you make it seem. You make it seem like you arrived and then it's been 30 years of hits, hits, hits and loveliness. Since I last saw you, I think somebody sent me this clip on Twitter, and it's one of those things where we’ve gotta go « a lesser performer would have cracked ». KM: I might crack now. GH : Have you seen this recently? KM: I saw like a tiny bit of it and I could watch no more. GN: We’re only watching a tiny bit. No more. So explain this, it's Spanish television. You know I think about 1990. KM: Yes. That's about all I care to remember. GN: Yeah, well I think it was Spanish. This is so weird. It was the Spanish government and they decided they were trying to appeal to a younger demographic. Right. KM: Probably no one told me that at the time. They just shove you out. GN: So they were trying to appeal to a younger demographic. I'm not sure it worked but what you have to admire here is Kylie Minogue professionalism in really some difficult circumstances. The crowd weren’t loving it. *VIDEO* (very disturbing video of Kylie smiling, singing and dancing in front of a crowd looking totally bored, and not one person is smiling – they couldn’t care less of Kylie’s performance)

KM: Ok that’s amazing GN: That is the League of Gentleman surely? JB: Kylie fuck them, you’re a great performer, you were great. GN: Do you remember it or have you blanked it from your mind? KM: I’ve blanked more than that trust me. GN: Just shut it down. Congratulations, 30 years, Kylie Minogue!

Interview • BBC Radio 2

zoe ball breakfast show MAY 3RD, 2019 uk Kylie was interviewed by Zoe Ball during the « Zoe Ball Breakfast Show » on BBC Radio 2, on Friday May 3rd 2019. Kylie’s new single was played on the radio for the first time, Zoe and her talked about the song and also about her upcoming summer shows… ZB: We welcome our first guest. She’s had more than 20 consecutive Top 10 hits in a row, has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide. Now she’s getting Glastoready and has popped-in with a brand new track that has never been heard before we played it to the team this morning and we haven’t stopped singing it. Good morning to the iconic, the gorgeous, the legendary queen of pop: Kylie Minogue. KM: I wanna run over and hug you! What an intro, thank you! ZB : You deserve no less than that my darling! How are you, gorgeous one? KM: I’m good! Very good! ZB : Yes, very exciting times in Kylie world right now! KM: Yeah, I keep losing my breath every time someone mentions Glastonbury I’m kind of ooooh *pretends to be struggling to breathe*. Yep, that’s happening. Also Edinburgh Castle, Blenheim Palace... Lots of other summer gigs but that particular one gets a lot of attention. ZB : I know and of course it’s an emotional one for you, because you were supposed to play there before, was it 16 years ago? KM: It was 2005. And well you know it was thrilling at that point in time, I was going to play at the Glastonbury stage, and it would have been an evening slot, a headline slot. But then I received my diagnosis which put a halt to everything. So all these years have passed, and as another year passed and another year passed I was thinking “Well I guess that’s never going to happen for me”, you know “I’ve kind of missed the boat on that” and then bang! I was offered the Legends Slot which is crazy to me and incredibly exciting slash nerve-wracking. ZB : Yeah, I can imagine! For the rest of us we’re like “Yeah! Kylie’s doing the Legend Slot!” KM: Yeah. So the emotions attached to that are one thing and separate to that is just the excitement and anxiety. It’s mostly excitement. ZB : Yes I can imagine. I mean you’re following on from fantastic people as well, Barry Gibb, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, Leonard Cohen, it’s quite an unbelievable list, and a joyous moment first of all.

KM : Well, I’ve never seen that performance there. But from all accounts it’s just... There’s joy because you’re dealing with people’s… You know all of our history and emotions and it feels like it’s one massive singalong. ZB : It really is! And you know what the other great thing about it is, for people who haven’t got tickets to Glastonbury? You can put it on a home. I remember putting it on when Lionel Richie played it, you just put it on the TV at home and you turn it right up and it’s like you’re there. Kind of a hole in the blanket, pretend it’s a poncho, that you haven’t slept for 3 days and you’re there in the crowd! It’s amazing, it’s gonna be phenomenal! The papers already have been talking about whether you’re going to be wearing the gold hot pants. KM: I know. Well that was a suggestion from a journalist I went “What!?” I think the hot pants had their day, but I mean my wardrobe is TBD. ZB: Well your wardrobe is always phenomenal. But we must talk about New York City. This fantastic record. KM: Do you know how ‘jazzed’ I am to hear that… When’s the last time I said ‘jazzed’? Maybe never. I think I was hanging out with Jake Shears not that long ago in Australia, and he was the one who said that “I’m so jazzed”. ZB: We‘re all adopting that phrase. KM: Jazzed that you’re talking about it because I know we’re going to have the first radio play this morning and it’s always something that’s like “so in the distance”, that “might happen” and people “might hear it”. I don’t know why I’m saying that, I’m very excited. ZB: Very excited about it! And was this written around the time of Golden? KM: It was part of the sessions for Golden and we really thought it had something, we just wrote a verse and a chorus so it wasn’t even a full song. It didn’t fit the theme of Golden. But I mean there is endless demos that don’t make it, but this one kind of ‘hung around’. Then I had a gig in New York City at the Bowery Ballroom in front of about 250/300 people. And so the little thought bubble came to me and I was like “just for fun we could punch it out there as a one-off kind of thing” and the crowd responded to it straight away and then we put it in the Golden Tour as

the beginning of our Studio 54 section and then we had the Greatest Hits album is on its way…. And fans were asking for a full version of the song which didn’t exist. So I went back in the studio and finished it. But it was actually nice to go back to... Like we went with the original demo sound which didn’t fit Golden but it feels quite fresh now. ZB: Excellent stuff. And we’re going to talk about the Greatest Hits as well because it just blows my mind reading the list of tracks. They’re all killer songs, I mean every single one of those songs is a massive hit. You are such a clever girl. Do you want to introduce your new single ? KM : Oh my gosh ok. *screams*. Here it is for the first time ever on radio. Ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls. I’m no good at this. This is why they pay you the big bucks. Here is New York City. * PLAYS NEW-YORK CITY*

KM: Woohooo. That was so much fun! ZB: We just turned Radio 2 into a club in New York! It was absolutely amazing. Josh Widdicombe’s (English Comedian and radio and TV Presenter) just wandered in. Everyone was doing slow motion dancing. I’m so sorry Josh. It doesn’t normally happen that here. That’s the effect of Kylie for you. JOSH : That was unbelievable, wow! ZB : And Josh, when you wandered in the first thing you said was “I don’t dance”. KM: You did a tiny shimmy though. JOSH : I did a tiny shimmy. KM: Because you were only under immense pressure to do so. JOSH : I know, I just felt like “It’s Kylie... I’ve got to do something here”. ZB : I think forever I will adopt that move that Josh did because it’s sort of like a little fist at the shoulder and a little side to side. It’s a good move! JOSH : I know, you can use it for your next video Kylie? KM: We did the video, it’s done, it’s on record. JOSH : There we go! ZB : *Starts reading the tweets and messages received from fans*: “Kylie is a legend. New track is amazing, love it, love it, love it”, says Ben in Derby. “That is a winner, Kylie you got it! Loved your concert at the O2 last year. Lots of love from Mark and Mark”, so the 2 Marks in Reading. “Morning Kylie, been a fan of you for just over 30 years. I would like to know what’s your favorite single?”, now this is a really good question, Lucy Fenner! KM: That’s a really good and difficult question. ZB : Because you’ve got out your ‘Step Back In Time - The Definitive Collection’ which is coming out on Friday the 28th of June - the weekend of Glastonbury - and I mean, Josh look, that list is insane! KM: It goes on and on! ZB: I mean there is every single, everything’s on it. How many are there, 40, 41? KM: I think it’s 41 plus one. JOSH : That’s 42. ZB : 41 plus New York City then. Very good. He’ good at maths. You’re very good at maths Josh!

JOSH : Cheers mate! ZB : But it’s a good question though. I mean when you’re putting together that album Kylie, you must go through so many memories of your life for each one... You know, it’s a different era, a different Kylie, a different love, a different place you were in your life... KM: It’s a lot. But can I choose a favorite? I really don’t think I can because of all those reasons... JOSH : Locomotion? KM: Locomotion, because it was the first one, has that importance. Then get to something like Spinning Around that marked such a big turning point for me. Slow, I mean I’m just going to start listing songs which is not answering the question. All The lovers. I mean I don’t know... ZB: So many. Lucy didn’t tell us which her favorite was but she can’t wait to see you at Hampton Court Palace and at Brighton pride and says “I love you”. There is a lot of love... What’s your favourite Kylie’s single Josh? JOSH : It’s gotta be Better The Devil You Know! KM : Oh nice one! ZB : That is a good choice. *Reads a new message* “My wife and I went to a 80s party last week. I went as a new romantic. My wife Caroline went as 1980s’ Kylie. Which 80s character would Kylie go as? She can come to my 50th in two years if she’s free” says Matt. KM: 80’s? I might as well turn up as Charlene, let’s face it. I’ll get the dungarees on! ZB : D’you know what, you know it’s like Bill Murray. They made that documentary about how Bill Murray would turn up at people’s parties all the time. KM: Yeah I saw those! ZB : It’s really amazing isn’t it? He’d just turn up at people’s weddings, just hang out and going to get people bears and stuff. You should do that. Just turn up. KM: Or Madge (Charlene’s mum), I don’t know. Or Mrs Mangel (another Neighbours character). You could attach some venetian blinds that are always in front of you and just walk around like that. ZB : Josh I’m gonna give you a proper intro in a minute because I haven’t done that yet, but did I read somewhere that you used to be able to name all the characters from Neighbours? JOSH : Yeah I was really into Neighbours, I’ve watched it every day in the 90s and at lunch time and the evening one. And so I realized about 10 years later I knew all the actors’ names because I’ve watched the credits every day. So like if you say like “Harold Bishop” I know it’s “Ian Smith” or “Susan Kennedy”/ “Jackie Woodburne.” I’ve just got these facts in my head. KM: Do you go as far back into 80s ?... JOSH : Charlene / Kylie Minogue. ZB : He’s very good! JOSH : I’m more nineties specific. ZB : Has it come in handy in your life? JOSH : It’s never come in handy, no, not until today.

Interview • BBC Radio 2 Kylie stayed on the show during the other participants’ interviews, and specified at some point that Manchester was a special venue and show for her because she played there a lot of times already. At the end of the show, Tom Walker was invited to sing a few songs and he did a cover

of « Love At First Sight » (the « Fever » era song, not the one from Kylie’s first album). Kylie was really shocked and cried a bit, not because it was bad but because she loved it, and got all emotional about it! If you want to hear his cover, you can find it on YouTube.

Kylie Minogue on hotpants, fellas & Glastonbury debut 14 years after breast cancer forced her to cancel headline gig thesun.co.uk The Aussie will play the gig of her 31-year career in the Sunday   legends slot. KYLIE MINOGUE can’t get Glastonbury out of her head. In 2005 she was due to headline the festival but had to pull out after her breast cancer diagnosis. But 14 years later her time has come at last. The Aussie pop princess will perform the gig of her 31-year career in the Sunday afternoon  legends slot on June 30. - By Howell Davies And the ideas are pouring in thick and fast — the setlist, the special guests, the outfits... Then I mention her world-famous Spinning Around golden hotpants. There is a pause, then a smile. Surely those iconic, skin-tight shorts which made pop culture history 19 years ago will be making a comeback for the 100,000-strong crowd expected at the Pyramid Stage? She giggles and says: « I hadn’t thought about that. Gosh, I don’t know. You’ve really planted a seed that I had not considered. I don’t think they would have the same impact as they did in 2000 ». Kylie, they could make even MORE of an impact this time, I tell her. « Well let’s try and get lots of people wearing them. That would be amazing », she says. « And the sun’s meant to come out, so they’ll be gleaming ». Hotpants or not — on the crowd or on 50-year-old Kylie — the one thing she is certain about is the man who will be by her side, cheering her on at the festival. The Sun first revealed she was dating a Brit, Paul Solomons, last April and it’s clear he is now her rock. She was heartbroken in January 2017 after she broke off her yearlong engagement to British actor Joshua Sasse, 31, who she later admitted was never right for her. But after a year with 45-year-old Paul, creative director at GQ magazine, everything has changed. Kylie’s voice cracks with emotion as she opens up about their strong bond, her new man helping her through an exceptionally tough 2018. When I ask if he will be there to support her at Glastonbury, she says: « Absolutely. And the fact that he was with me throughout all of last year ... I’m so glad he had a great time and everyone had a great time. But it was a challenging year. It was really busy. Physically it was quite hard on me. So to have him a) celebrate all of those things and b) support me and just to anchor me when everything else

feels like the biggest mountain to climb, has been unbelievable. I’m so, so thankful and I don’t know how many people are at Glastonbury, how many faces I’ll be seeing, but the one I can promise you I’ll be looking for is his, every now and then, just to share that with him. It’s been a long time coming and I’m so grateful ». On June 28, two days before her Glastonbury performance, Kylie will release a greatest hits album, Step Back In Time, featuring 41 of her biggest tunes. She says: « It felt like the right time to celebrate. And I’m looking at the tracklist now. There’s so much behind each and every one of the songs. It’s been pretty overwhelming, putting this together. I say to people it’s like if you’re moving house and you start going through boxes. It’s like how a box of photos or books or whatever to someone else is just a shoe box of stuff, but for you there’s so much attached to that — memories and nostalgia, good and bad. All of it’s in there. Was it emotional? Yeah, it was, definitely. But a lot of emotions. There’s pride, there’s some embarrassment, there is absolute disbelief at what I’m looking at, going, I just would not have seen this coming at 19 years old, releasing my first single ». Embarrassed? By any of those huge hits? She quickly backtracks. Instead of naming any of those early numbers, she confesses she cringes at some of her styles when she was launching her pop career as a fresh-faced singer who had shot to fame as Charlene Robinson in TV soap Neighbours. She laughs and says: « Oh God, do I really mean embarrassed? The songs I’m looking at on here are pretty good, actually. I guess it’s just the development. Early in my career I really didn’t know what I was doing. I know I’m always learning. There’s always something else

62 www.kylie-world.com

Laeti, May 2K19

to learn. You’re thrown into a situation where you’ve just got to make it work. But hearing your voice at 19 is very different to hearing your voice now. I mean, Eighties fashion, big earrings, big hats and big hair ». It’s perfect timing though. The Eighties are back. She says: « I know, I’m right on time! Is the perm having a comeback, did I read that? Amazing ».

all I think about. It’s such a big deal for me, that will be very emotional. I can’t really put it into words yet what I think it’s going to be like, aside from the fact that I hope it’s just a massive singalong and we can all travel together down memory lane. I guess the difficulty is choosing which songs to put in when I’ve got 75 minutes. I might have to do a little megamix at some point ».

Kylie proved she is still a musical force to be reckoned with when she released her 14th studio album, Golden, last April — and it went straight to No1. And she is building on that by adding a new track to her greatest hits collection — New York City, which fans heard a rough version of on her tour last year. She says: « It was done as a demo for the Golden album and it just didn’t fit. It was very electro. The fans loved it and they were asking, ‘When can we get the finished song?’. It’s also likely to be on the setlist for her Glastonbury gig — which The Sun first revealed last September and which currently seems to be Kylie’s main preoccupation. She says: « In a part of my brain it’s

With a greatest hits album on the way, 31 years in music under her belt and a crowning Glastonbury slot, it feels like the triumphant culmination of three decades of incredible highs and lows for Kylie. She says: « I feel like it will really mark a point in time, and then I imagine I would look forward to having a clean slate and, as and when I get back in the studio, just getting back to business. I would look forward to doing a pop-disco album. That’s where I think I would head ». It seems there’s plenty more years of spinning around to do yet.

exclusive interview : kylie talks about her new greatest hits, touring and coming to brazil portalpopline.com.br If I were asked to describe Kylie Minogue in a few words, I believe I would say: sympathy, charisma and talent. It's a more than 30-year career, just in music (remember she started out as an actress on the Australian TV soap "Neighbors"), always without fear of taking risks (yes, we're talking about you, "Impossible Princess"), but always showing a lot of talent in everything. And she has done everything: ventured into the movies (but we're not here to talk about her role in "Street Fighter "), sang with an orchestra, suffered from love and won over a breast cancer. In Australia, her homeland, she is almost a true national treasure: even those who don’t necessarily like her music, comes out to defend her when someone dares to say something not nice about her (believe me, I have already witnessed this). Kylie Minogue is much more than "Can’t Get You Out Of My Head", the most internationally successful song of her career, and to celebrate more than 30 years of career, Kylie will launch another compilation of hits: "Step Back in Time". The title, quite appropriate for a Greatest Hits album, comes from a song by Kylie herself released in 1990. And we at POPline had the opportunity to interview Kylie Minogue by phone, exclusively for the Brazilian press, and talk to the Australian star about every step of her career and what the future holds for her: new tour, show at Glastonbury and, of course, coming to Brazil. - By Kavad Medeiros 63 www.kylie-world.com

Interview • May 2019 Hi Kylie, how are you? I'm fine thanks. And you? I'm fine, thanks for asking. First of all I would like to say that I am a big fan of yours and I am honored and a little nervous to be talking to you now [laughs]. It’s okay! Don’t worry. Let's be professional now... [Laughs] Good! You have a new Greatest Hits coming up, but you already have a few Greatest Hits albums in your discography. Why do you think it is the right time to release another one? It's the right time to release a Greatest Hits because... A: I felt like it was the right time and B: I have several summer shows coming up in the following months, including the Legend Slot at Glastonbury, which is something that is very very important to me. And also it’s time to reflect, celebrate and give thanks. I am very grateful for everything. I am not usually a person who talks about or looks back at the past. I usually think about what I am going to do next, so it is exciting to look back, but more simply I just feel it is the right time.

The song was conceived during the recording sessions for "Golden" and now that people are familiar with that album, they must realize that the song doesn’t sound at all like the rest of the album [laughs]. We just had a version of the chorus we did late in the day when I was working in Oxfordshire in the UK and we were enjoying this music a lot, but we also realized we were not doing the work we should be doing [laughs]. It couldn’t fit in "Golden", but my team and I really liked it so we kept it. And during the promo tour I did for the album, I sang this in a very small theater in New York and after that it just stayed in my head. So every once in a while, we would do another verse, just to complete it and we played it to the audience who loved it. People started asking for a studio version, because I never got to record it, so anyway to cut a long story short, we thought it would be great for the Greatest Hits album and I went back to the studio. I had flown to London from Australia just three days before so I was completely jetlagged but I spent 12 hours in the studio to finish the song, and I’m really happy we produced it the way we wanted to. That's the story behind "New York City". The music is incredible! Thank you! And I think it’s perfect for my Greatest Hits because it sounds kind of old, you know?

So talking about these shows that are coming up... What should your fans expect from them? A "Showgirl 2.0" type of show? Country? Disco? I think it's just going to be Kylie, you know? [Laughs] It will not be a particular theme, like it was for "Showgirl" or "Aphrodite". People love a show, we all love to see a ‘big’ show but allowing me to connect more with people, to be sure of the human quality at the show... Well, I feel alive when I'm near the band, when I can feel their presence. I think people see the music differently when they see that the band is also there working on a two-hour show. So I don’t think there will be a theme, I'll just try to be present and glow [laughs]... I love sparkle, that's what I think it's going to be for me.

Exactly! Well of course it sounds like a new song, but it has a kind of retro feel as well.

You talked about Glastonbury, which is very special to you. Is it going to be different from your other summer shows? Yes, I think you always expect to do something different and you definitely want it to be good. I mean, I'll play in other incredible arenas this summer, but of course I'm focusing on Glastonbury’s legendary stage and of course, there will be some surprises.

And you're celebrating over 30 years of music career now... I don’t even know how that happened really [laughs].

You released a new song last week, "New York City", but I think you’ve had that song for a while already? I think I've had this song for a year and a half, more or less... And why did you decide to release it now and not before, during the "Golden" album era?

Yes the music is very disco. Is that the direction you plan to take for your next project? Will we have Disco Kylie again? I'd love to explore that a little bit. I mean, I won’t know until I’ve finished the summer shows, but I think it's always a possibility for me. It could be Disco Pop, Electro or a mix of everything I've done so far. I definitely know that what I have learned and experienced from a composition standpoint when I did "Golden" will stay with me and be inserted in the style that I will do in the future.

I'm not going to ask you about a favorite song. Thank you, because that would be impossible. But can you choose a favorite album? Wow!! I don’t think so. I mean, I'm trying to give you an answer, but I can’t! It would rack my head! I think "Rhythm of Love" was important because I kind of started getting better on the music scene. "Impossible Princess" was a weird album, in the sense that it was not very successful, but if I could say it was "underground" then yeah, it had a more "underground" sound. Aphrodite... I mean ... I don’t know, I really don’t.

I will try to help you. For me, it’s a split between "X", "Body Language" and "Aphrodite", for sure. Ah yes! OK! I think if we talk about what could come in the future, I think... I can never duplicate a song, you know? But if I could have my version 2.0 of "All The Lovers" or “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head" or "Spinning Around", any of those songs would be a miracle! You only came once to Brazil to do a show and we’d love for you to come back… I know! And honestly, I can tell you that, well first I loved coming, and second, I’m so sad I have never been able to return. I promise you all, I would love to go and do shows in your country again. I absolutely loved it. We are waiting for you! But can you tell me what your main memory of your time here in Brazil is? The public. The love and passion of the audience, no doubt. You are considered one of the biggest LGBTQ + icons in the world. How important is that to you, both personally and professionally? It is very natural to me. I almost want to say that it didn’t even need any effort from me, but of course everything needs an effort. But it is a very organic and natural relationship that began a long, long, long time ago. And I'm proud that it was before we had things like advertising, marketing for this type of audience. I have nothing against it, it's always good to have advertising for all types of people, but for me it was something very natural, normal and I 65 www.kylie-world.com

have a loyal group of fans and supporters. It is wonderful. You've collaborated with a few different artists throughout your career, but fans, like myself, want to know when we'll have a complete collaborative album from you and your sister Dannii? [Laughs] Oh, oh my God! We've had enough trouble doing just one song together, so this may take a while! But you're right, it would be awesome! I mean, even for us, when we listen to "100 Degrees" we’re like “Is this you or is this me?”. The differences between our voices are very subtle and surely you would have to be an expert to differentiate them. I love the version you made of ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All", it's one of my favorite songs. Oh thanks. Not many people have heard of it. And to end this incredible conversation, I want to thank you once again for being so nice and incredible and thank you for your music and everything. Ah, you made my day! Thank you! Can you send a message to POPline and all your Brazilian fans who are really crazy about you? Of course. Hello everyone from POPline and all you beautiful fans from Brazil! I'm sending you a big kiss on the heart! I love you! The Greatest Hits "Step Back in Time", will be released by Kylie Minogue on June 28 and will come with more than 40 hits by the Australian singer.
