Hiyaaaaa lovers !
After having fought against different diseases and surviving to mountains of work, we are (finally) back, with a new edition bringing together everything that happened in Kylie’s world in January and February. So yes, this is not your usual « monthly » magazine, but given that there hasn’t been that much going on for Kylie (at least publicly), we preferred giving you an edition that combines the last two months and that has more content, rather than two separate editions (which would be too short). On the program this month: everything about the « Tourism Australia » campaign which was broadcast just before Christmas and the singer’s interviews on this subject, a focus on the song « Where Is The Feeling », a look behind the scenes of Kylie’s Secret Night show, an interview with Quentin Harrison about his book on Kylie and the latest news from our favorite Australian who is back in the studio! We hope you enjoy reading and see you next month, unless the coronavirus has taken us by then... Enjoy ! xx Laeti and Isa

Where Is The Feeling ? Fans had to wait eight months after the brilliant « Put Yourself In My Place » - a lifetime really - before Kylie released a third (and last) single from her self-titled 1994 album. On July 10th, 1995 she finally surprised fans with a new version of the album track « Where Is The Feeling ? ». Why such a long wait in between singles? Was it an afterthought? Well, actually Kylie had other engagements at that time. « Where Is The Feeling? » was originally planned as the second single from Kylie’s new album, but was postponed for the release of « Put Yourself In My Place ». It was then meant to be released in April 1995 but was once again rescheduled until July because she was filming « Bio-Dome » and also because Kylie and her team wanted to get all the mixes just right. It took so long that Kylie even said that the song came to be lovingly known as « Where Is The Record ? » and then « Where Is The Video ? ».
Focus • Where Is The Feeling Originally « Where Is The Feeling » was a track BIR Dolphin Mix was used for the official video. The recorded in 1993 by a band called Within A Dream, only « issue » with this darker version is that it wasn’t meaning Kylie’s version is a cover. The song was radio-friendly at all, so another mix was created. written by Wilf Smarties and Jayn Hanna, and Kylie’s cover was produced by British duo Steve Anderson and Dave Seaman, aka Brothers In Rhythm (or BIR, and you should know them very well by now). Steve and Dave knew Within A Dream’s song quite well and during a meeting where they had to share ideas that people had for Kylie’s album at the time, Steve suggested to cover it as it seemed like a perfect fit and of course, Kylie was up for the challenge! Years later Steve said : « It’s a brilliant pop record and there is no one else in the world that sings those words better than her ».
• The « Where Is The Feeling? BIR Bish Bosh Mix », which is actually the version that I prefer. It’s a nearly 5-minute long more house oriented variant which was used by Kylie when she was promoting the song on TV or live. It’s basically a bouncier, shorter, clubbier and euphoric remix of the album version, it has a brilliant intro. I’m pretty sure that it probably would have done better in the charts if this mix had been chosen for the single version, because it was also a hit in nightclubs. A shorter version of this mix (« BIR Bish Bosh Mix Edit ») was then aimed for radio play. Now, if we go back to the single version we were talking about, the « BIR Dolphin Mix », well this mix is in fact a variant and much shorter version of the « BIR Dolphin Soundtrack ».
As BIR had already reworked the original song for Kylie’s album track, it made sense for them to take care of reworking on it to make it a single. However, when the single came out, we were in for a shock as it had absolutely nothing to do with the version that we all knew from the album! The near 7-minute breezy, bubbly, clubby acid-jazz based album version with pop chords and melody, which was a cool dance anthem was totally unrecognizable! Let me try to explain this as best as I can, because it can get a bit confusing. • The released 7” single version is called « Where Is The Feeling? BIR Dolphin Mix ». It transforms the album version into a deeper club track where the verses are mostly spoken (almost whispered sometimes) and overlapped with Kylie’s singing sections and the big chorus is taken down. A shorter version of the 13 www.kylie-world.com
Isa, Jan/Feb 2K20
• The « BIR Dolphin Soundtrack » (Extended 12” version) is pure experimentation and lasts over 14 minutes (the musical intro is already 4 minutes long)! This version highlights even more the darkness that lurks inside the song’s lyrics, and there are even some additional spoken lyrics in the middle and a kind of poem at the end and all that makes the song even darker and dramatic. In an interview with Quentin Harrison in 2015, Steve Anderson stated : « By making the vocals spoken, rather than sung, it took the whole song from a happy place to a more twisted and dark love song; it enabled us to reinvent it as something much moodier. However, one of the things I love the most about this version is the release that comes after so much darkness, when the major middle-eight section comes in like a ray of sunlight. The rest was pure experimentation, which DeConstruction and Kylie were always incredibly supportive of us doing - including the whole end section for which David wrote a poem which Kylie recites as the music gets more and more frantic ». In the same interview, Dave Seaman stated : « The 12” mix definitely pushed a few boundaries for her as an artist – a 13+ minute journey that passes through lots of different stages, from darker, techno-edged sections to uplifting, euphoric piano breakdowns and a half-time Doors-esque backed poetry recital. You certainly couldn’t accuse us of lacking ambition! ». Here are just some of the words in the spoken part and in the poem: « Love, trust, monogamy, isn’t that how it’s supposed to be? So why do I still feel this way? Detached and vulnerable… The world on my shoulders, left alone to face the unknown… Why is it the very thing that bonds us together, is also what drives us apart? Love me, hold me, comfort and reassure me, Touch me, need me, listen and understand me ». Thanks to the interview, we also get to know why they put the word “Dolphin” in the 7” and 12” versions: it’s because Dave Seaman had seen Luc Bes-
son’s « Big Blue » movie for the first time the night before they went into the studio to record the new mix of this song, and its soundtrack had a big effect on him and inspired him the name of this mix.
In 2017 Steve Anderson shared a bit of the back story regarding this song on Instagram : « The freedom and trust Dave and I had from deConstruction was unlike anything I’ve ever known then and since. Neither they or Kylie had no concerns when we suggested the idea to take a very uplifting house anthem from her album and twist it into a dark twisted spoken vocal journey which began with dolphins jumping around (seriously, there were dolphin sound effects on it) and gorgeous chilled string chords, morphing suddenly into a menacing bass line where the lyrics were recited in the most beautifully dark way, momentarily the sunlight shone back in for the middle eight - everything was going to be alright before plunging back into the deep for the brooding half time end section with a recited poem (which David wrote during the session) whilst the guitars wailed and we allowed all of our Mazzy Star influences to take over for the last few minutes, ending just with the dolphins splashing about again. All of the vocals were re recorded in one take as that’s just how Kylie rolls and she is always enthusiastic, inspirational and up for a challenge. The remix took just over two weeks to complete, mostly spent at Sarm West Studios and remains one of my favorite things we ever did - even after 22 years which is how old it

Focus • Where Is The Feeling is this week. So thank you Keith Blackhurst (co-founder of deConstruction) - you encouraged art and freedom and we ran with is as fast as we could with the best artist in the world ». (awwwww) !
The released version « Where Is The Feeling? BIR Dolphin Mix » is considered as one of Kylie’s bravest yet. It was one of her least commercial singles and most misunderstood pop masterpieces. She was taking risks vocally. Many say that here she was « laying the foundations » for subsequent single « Breathe », which is true (but not only, it laid the foundations for Kylie’s next album). This single was like totally unexpected, Kylie was adventurous and showing her dark and creative sides.
*** deConstruction had originally planned to accompany the song with two CD single releases, but it was reduced to only one CD due to new chart regulations at the time (some say it’s because of its poor success). This explains why the cover features two superimposed pictures of her (the two pics initially chosen to be used on the two releases).
Talking about the cover, for this single Kylie was back with another look! Her hair in rags from the « Confide In Me » era had vanished to make place to straight ginger hair. She even had a fringe! The super stylish and cool pictures on the cover were taken by Michael Williams. Some pics of his were also used for the « Hits + » album (including the cover).
Regarding the lyrics, Kylie summarized it herself perfectly « Well, I just wanna know what’s going on basically » (lol thanks Kylie). We can feel a lot of loneliness and desire in these lyrics, in fact, it’s a journey through a lot of emotions (fear, love, lust, sadness). The title of the song is actually very ironic when there are so many feelings in it!
Kylie at the BAFTA Awards in April 1995
When asked why she decided to go with this look, Kylie said it was because she was somewhat bored and because she had filmed the comedy called « BioDome » - that we don’t really want to talk about - and thought it would be quite good to look different for it (thankfully the film directors loved it). 15 www.kylie-world.com

Kylie on the set of the video
The interesting thing about this video is that it looks like everything is filmed at the seaside, but it’s actually filmed in a swimming pool which the staff working with Keir recreated to look like the sea (honestly it’s really well done). Kylie has often said that she « froze to death » that day because the whole video takes place in the water, even though the pool was heated. Kylie in Bio-Dome She also reported that all day the staff had to take the tea away from her because she literally could not Commercially, even though the song got a full stop shaking between the takes. It was only when remix and reproduction by BIR, it only managed to they said action that she managed to stop shaking. chart in two countries. Here’s the proof: • In the UK, it debuted and peaked at number sixteen, stayed two weeks only in the Top 40, and four weeks in the charts in total. • In Australia, the song debuted at number 31 but quickly slipped to number 38, and stayed in the charts for a total of three weeks. This was Kylie’s lowest and weakest-spanning solo single there, until « In My Arms » replaced the status (it only peaked at 35 lovers! How’s that even possible?).
THE VIDEO The video for this single was directed by Keir McFarlane, who had worked with Kylie for the « Put Yourself in My Place » video the year before. It’s quite strange that the director of these two clips is the same person because they have absolutely nothing to do with one another; they are nearly total opposites actually. The entirely black and white video was filmed in Los Angeles, more specifically at the Los AngeOh, just as a side note, less than one year before, les Valley High School. It was filmed in one day, on a Sunday, on one of Kylie’s days off (guess it after having filmed the video for « Put Yourself In My wasn’t really a day off then...) in the middle of the Place » Kylie had said « no more videos with harness film that Kylie was making over there (Bio-Dome). or water ». Kylie is a Gemini for sure … 16 www.kylie-world.com

Focus • Where Is The Feeling Anyway, first on the screen there is a countdown from 10 to 0. Then during the first part of the clip we see Kylie, with smokey eyes looking all around her like if she was in danger, but then again that’s exactly what she wanted : « The most important thing that I wanted to come across in the video was that there was some imminent danger. It turns out luckily to be in the form of a very handsome man ». God Kylie
LIVE / TV PERFORMANCES and ON TOUR Kylie and her team decided not to do a world tour to support her 1994 album, instead they focused on promoting it via TV appearances and some small gigs. It also stated that Kylie would be playing live with a full band on Sunday 6th August 1995 as special guest at « T In the Park » in Glasgow.
The clip reminds us of a Calvin Klein commercial and/or of Kylie’s video for « What Do I Have To Do » when she holds her wet hair backwards. Let’s also note that at some points, it looks like Kylie can walk on water (#God). The only thing that’s a bit of a shame is that sometimes in the video it looks like Kylie is singing out of synch. On December 25th, the show called Kylie’s Secret Night was broadcast on Channel 4 in England, and its presenter was Alan Carr. I’m pretty sure you all watched it, but we were actually lucky enough to attend the show, so it’s the opportunity for us to tell you a little bit more about how the filming of the show went and to give you some behind the scenes info.
kylie’s SECRET NIGHT behind the scenes... At the end of the summer 2019, a message was posted on social media that a TV channel was looking for Kylie’s biggest fans for a future project. Many of you responded to the short questionnaire posted online while others wondered if the project was for real… Well, it was indeed very real and some fans were called back by the TV channel, they were asked more information regarding their passion for Kylie (at least that’s what the fans stated on social networks). At the end of September, we could find once again on social networks some details about the project: it would be a short program where fans would come to talk about their love for Kylie, and they would be allowed to see the premiere of the « Golden Tour » in exclusivity. Some even said that the filmed parts would be on the DVD as a bonus, and that the intervention of fans would be filmed by the end of November. The people who were selected were then contacted by e-mail and only a few of them were put in the confidence that Kylie would actually be there during the show (we found it out two days before, so it was a little complicated to organize our-
selves to be honest !). In the email, it was clearly stated that we shouldn’t say that we knew that Kylie would be there because most of the invited people thought that it was a Tribute show to the singer, followed by the exclusive broadcast of the « Golden Tour ». We were told to dress well for the show, so obviously when we got to the location, everyone was really well dressed. Only one sign outside where it was written « Kylie Tribute Show + Special Guests » gave us a clue that we were at the right place, but a very few people knew what to expect. I also think that some people who had confirmed their presence did not show up at the last minute… If I remember well, I think we had to be there by 6 pm, and once we got there we waited in line to pick up a wristband and drop off our stuff and our phone. We were then accompanied to our table, and there were 4 to 5 people per table. Some were placed in the back, on armchairs which looked like cinema armchairs. Being at a table where we didn’t know anyone gave us the op24 www.kylie-world.com

portunity to meet beautiful people and conversations came-up fairly easily because everyone’s main subject was Kylie. While we were waiting for « something » to happen, some people went on stage with covers of singles and the audience shouted to vote for their favourite covers and then we did some kind of karaoke on Kylie’s songs (I mean, who else?). Around 7/7:30 p.m., the filming finally started with Alan Carr as the host. It was the first surprise of the evening. After redoing the intro, we were ready for a filming of about 5 hours! What you see on the show is Kylie coming on stage to sing « Can’t Get You ». On our side, it started with Alan Carr who went to see a person in the audience (she was apparently an actress but we are not sure), who claimed to do karaoke on Kylie songs. He asked her if she wanted to do a performance that night, to which she replied yes before going behind the scenes to be fitted with a microphone. And so we thought it was going to be her on stage, but suddently Kylie arrived! (Well, in hindsight, honestly we should have guessed it... I mean her musicians were there and we know them quite well now so it should have occured to us that they hadn’t come just for a karaoke...). The singer performed some of her greatest songs in front of about 200 people (it’s just a guess, the room was really small and with the tables and chairs there was not much space to put more people). All the fans who had been chosen to speak were obviously aware of it before the show, someone came
to show them and repeat what they should be saying, what the questions were going to be and if they were asked to choose a Kylie song, they had to say the song given by the production if it was different from their personal choice (the songs that Kylie sung during the show were of course defined in advance and the production had to adapt according to that, which is quite normal). The sequences were obviously not filmed in the order in which you see them on the TV show, but each time, we could see the different sequences broadcast « live » during the filming, you know for example when there were the reports of chosen people’s stories or the pranks in the taxis, which made it feel like we were kind of seeing the whole show while it was being recorded.
of it was terrible and most of the time, we couldn’t even see the people of the house. Alan had told Kylie to be quiet to be the surprise of the call, but at one point she did speak, so Alan told off her off and she understood her error! In the end, because of the bad connection, it went unnoticed, but Kylie’s face when she realized her mistake was pretty funny! Several fan questions were also cut, including the one about her favorite cheese, as well as a game where the public had to say whether in the photo it was Kylie or not, by seeing only a small part of her body or the image.
Concerning the songs interpreted, Kylie sang twice a track (I think it was « Put Your Hand On Your Heart ») cause she missed up with the lyrics or song and was not sure it was ok and « Slow » was Kylie had to put on her ear- apparently cut during the editing ... phones every time she sang a song to get the sound back and Kylie and Alan Carr also filmed stayed with us while the foo- the advertisement which was tage was broadcast in the room. broadcast on TV while we were She laughed many times when there. kylie and mates tourism australia It was THE rumor that animated our year end: Kylie would be the main star of an advertising campaign for Australian tourism, in order to attract new visitors to her native country... If we knew that she had re-filmed the video for « Slow » thanks to paparazzi photos and that she had spent time in Australia during November, no more information had leaked. But as Christmas approached, we discovered a promotional photo (published on social media, in magazines, and on giant screens in England) telling us that Kylie would be on air on December 25th, just before the Queen’s speech on ITV, and on which we could see the singer, sitting in an armchair with a cup of tea in her hand with the title « Kylie And Mates ». A photo of her now, dressed in Charlene of the Neighbours’ days, also appeared somewhere, which led us to ask ourselves many questions .. And in the end, on Christmas’ day we got our answer: Kylie is indeed the new face of an advertising campaign for tourism in Australia! The campaign was the object of many articles and opinions, positive and negative, since the ad didn’t really come out at the best time ... Here is everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the campaign !

THE ADVERT
t was a few minutes before the Queen’s Christmas speech (which airs every year on ITV) that Kylie would be on air, we didn’t really know what to expect. An Australian girl on TV before the Queen does her speech? It seemed a little bizarre to say the least... And even more when it is to promote your own country and encourage English people to go there! But it was true, Kylie is part of this advertising campaign (which cost more than 15 million dollars)... At the same time, who better than an Australian living in England for so many years could be at the head of this campaign? (At the end we could almost end-up believing that Kylie is from England...). This campaign has the slogan « Come Live Our PhilAUsophy » and extends over a period of three years. It’s not just a commercial, but a 3-minute music video for the song « MateSong » performed by Kylie and a few Australian friends. In the song, they all encourage Brits to come and visit Australia, making a lot of references to the Brexit. The video begins with the image that we had all seen, the singer dressed in a pink suit sitting in an armchair, with a cup of tea next to her and frames containing pictures of australian animals just above her. This refers to the Queen before her speech at Sandringham. Suddenly the wall behind her falls, and Kylie is dressed in a red swimsuit on a beach in Australia, while continuing to sing. We also see a tennis player, which reminds us of the Australian Tennis Open, as well as landscapes in gardens in Sydney or in a museum. Kylie then appears in the famous outfit she wore for Neighbours, her overalls, and like a real mechanic, she comes out from under a car.
The promotion continues by showing many local activities including fishing, Kylie changes her outfits according to the places she is in (we see her doing yoga on the beach, playing baseball in a garden or strolling on a naturist beach, but not naked, sorry guys). The video continues and shows us all the cool aspects of Australia, including handsome surfers who eat fish and chips by the ocean, great restaurants and fine wines, but also Kylie pouring a beer in a pub (and believe me, if she was really a waitress in a bar, even if I don’t drink alcohol I’d force myself to drink more...). Kylie told the Herald Sun about this moment: « People say « Did you pull that pint? » Yes I did. I was really proud. I’ve never poured a pint in my life. I’ve poured a Guinness, with the guy watching me and not being filmed 28 www.kylie-world.com
or having to do it in a certain amount of time and get everything right. I just kept thinking « I’ve got to be able to do this, it can’t be that difficult’ so I was really proud of myself. I’ve asked to get the full video to prove that I did pour that beer! ». In the middle of the video comes the cutest moment of 2019: Kylie and a quokka, voted the happiest animal in the world (it’s not from us but from the internet!). We’d never heard of this animal before, but after seeing Kylie’s selfie with it, we just want to adopt one and hug it all the time! At some point, we can also see the singer with other animals when she’s perched on a tree, surrounded by koalas. What stands out with this ad is the integration of Kylie’s universe into a video to promote Laeti, Jan/Feb 2K20
her country. After Charlene in Neighbours, we find our Australian girl lying on the ground, recreating the video of « Slow », of which we had seen some paparazzi pics weeks before. The short three-minute music video ends with a close-up on the « buttocks » of boys wearing red swimsuits with AUSTRALIIIIIAAAAAAAAA written on them (in several parts, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to read it). Kylie ends the song by adding: « See you soon yeah? ».
Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham said Britain was going through a period of uncertainty, not least because of Brexit, which had led to a drop in the number of tourists to Australia. « It is crucial that we continue to drive growth from this market, both first-timer travellers but also repeat visitors whose familiarity means that they are more likely to want to travel further and deeper into our regions ».

THE SONG
s stated on the Australian tourism website (australia.com), « Matesong » is a song filled with friendship. The lyrics were written by Eddie Perfect,
an Australian (of course) who is also an author, singer and composer. In order to sing it with your friends, here are the lyrics of the song.
This year’s been tough and confusing But progress is moving… At glacial pace But all of Australia loves you And we’ll never judge you You just need some space When you need an end to what ails ya Call on your friends in Australia A pal to rely on A shoulder to cry on In Australia We can turn off the news You can kick off your shoes We’ll play backyard cricket Get ready to lose So throw in the towel You can use one of ours We speak your language Except for the vowels Yes we know you love your fish n’ chips and your curries But hey, that’s no worries Good grub’s guaranteed Negotiating tricky trade deals is a shocker But look there’s a quokka! And that’s what you need
A quokka is literally what you need! Glorious United Kingdom Lean on your wing-men and women We’ll clear your head Have a sausage in bread We’ll go to the beach Then we’ll tuck you in bed Don’t bite your nails to the cuticles Hang with impressive marsupials Helping a mate Is a national trait In Australia! Yes, when everything’s a test Call your besties across the ocean Sisters and Brothers We know you think you’re above us But deep down you love us You just repress emotion But we’ll put you right Have another flat white! Go grab your cosies You’re Aussies tonight! Calling all Poms Keep Calm Carry On In Austra----li----a! Austra---li---a!

THE PLACES
his video allowed us to discover many places Taronga Zoo, Sydney in Australia, which we were not necessarily aware of. If some have caught your eye and you are planning a trip to the world of kangaroos very soon, here is a small summary of the places visited by Kylie.
First stop: Sandringham outside Melbourne.
Beach,
If in Sydney you can find pretty beaches, have beautiful walks on the coast and discover great restaurants, you can also follow Kylie’s example and go to the Taronga Zoo, which shelters more than 4,000 animals near the port from the city. Another place not to miss, where you can see Kylie and Adam, is Cronulla Beach in the south of the city. There is not only sand and surf in this region, there is also a superb national park, which is the second eldest national park in the world, with many paths designed for hiking, fishing spots and places where there are Aboriginal engravings.
Very far from the private residence of Queen Elizabeth, Sandringham Beach is however a royal place. This stretch of sand is about 30 minutes from Flinders Street station in Melbourne, and this is where Kylie (and Adam Hills) begin singing the song. Australia.com recommends that you Byron Bay, an essential place travel to Melbourne, which is not only a cultural capital, but also a sports capital. In the music video, you can see Ash Barty, a tennis champion, playing at Melbourne Park. However, and among sporting events, cricket matches are the most popular in Melbourne (with the appearance of Shane Warne, a former player). And if sport is not your thing, you can find an energetic lifestyle in the city, many cafes in the morning and cocktails in the evening (and you can go to rooftops letting you admire the city ). Here’s a recommendation from Australia.com: As Shane Warne, watch a cricket match when you come. The final of the T20 Women’s World Cup takes place in March and the T20 Men’s World Cup in October and November.
How can we not mention Byron Bay? One of Australia’s most famous places (especially thanks to or because of influencers who post a lot of photos from over there). In the music video, we see Kylie doing her yoga there. If you stay at the

Elements of Byron, you can recreate the singer’s scene for free, thanks to the course: First Light Beachfront Yoga. But if you are a little more adventurous, you can go surfing, kayaking or horse riding on the shore! About 30 minutes inland, you can find a picturesque hinterland and hiking trails through an ancient tropical forest. A 4h30 path, Minyon Falls, will lead you to a 100-meter waterfall, surrounded by pretty forest. It is also possible to sleep in the rainforest in luxury accommodation, such as the Cape Byron Retreat.
pontoon. These islands, not far from Brisbane will allow you to discover the city and the coasts, with a rather incredible wild life. Uluru
If you want more advice on this place, you can go to Australia.com, where chef Darren of the Three Blue Ducks restaurant (the restaurant we see in the music video), gives you his advice and the best places to see according to him.
Heart Reef, Queensland
« It was the first time I visited Uluru and it was as amazing, epic and inspiring as I had imagined and dreamed about ». said Kylie. With such words, how could we not wanna go there? The Red Center is one of the most impressive destinations of Australia. It is a 348 meter red monolith which is sacred to the indigenous peoples of the region. You can admire this beauty either by taking a helicopter tour, by Segway (yes!) or by taking a hike around the rock or by registering for an aboriginal art course which begins with a walk at the bottom of Uluru, at the Mutitjulu Waterhole.
You could not miss the beauty of this place in Rottnest Island the video: Heart Reef, a natural reef where Ian Thorpe, a former Olympic champion trains and which is made up of a coral reef. This place, which stretches over 2,300 kilometers, is considered the best place for many diving experiences, including snorkelling and scuba diving. If you want a taste of island life, the Whitsunday Islands are ideal. This archipelago of 74 tropical islands is home to abundant marine life, white sandy beaches and luxurious lodges. If you are at the Hamilton Island complex, you can experience the Heart Reef in an incredible way, including by helicopter, before landing on the private Heart Island 32 www.kylie-world.com
Laeti, Jan/Feb 2K20
Let’s finish this trip with Rottnest Island, a place full of unique animals, including the happiest animal in the world, the quokka. It is off Perth that you can admire these cute little animals (which we want to capture and bring home). You can get
there by taking a ferry from the suburbs of Fremantle and take as many selfies as you want with them, but you can also explore the beaches, ride a bike or even skydive for the more adventurous.

Being the Fashion icon that she is, Kylie let Australian designers take 100% care of her style and shows the outfits in the different places where she was filmed. You can also find the Tattersall’s Arcade, a historic shopping destination that opened in... 1926! In Sydney, various stores will allow you to buy branded stuff, especially in the suburb of Surry Hills. We will talk again about this brand a little further on in this article.

It is THE brand that the singer wears the most in the video: indeed Kylie wears three different outfits of the brand. Born in the coastal suburb of Bondi Beach in Sydney, Camilla knows how to adapt herself to local life. Many shops can be found across the country, especially in the chic Sydney suburb of Paddington, Oxford Street which brings together some high-end designer boutiques, or in Bondi, on Warners Avenue. In Brisbane, you can find Camilla in Fortitude Valley on James Street. Namely, this brand has already been worn by many celebrities, including Beyoncé, Oprah and Naomi Watts.
Romance Was Born You could not miss this jumper worn by the singer at the Taronga zoo when she is surrounded by koalas. It comes from the Romance Was Born brand, known for its bold designs and its use of pearls, sequins and embroidery. With a big koala on the sweater, they couldn’t have chosen better for this decor! This is the brand that designed the cricket sweater worn by Kylie and they have clothing inspired by both classic styles and modern designs. Only two stores exist and are in Sydney: the first on Oxford Street, in Paddington, and the second on Bungan Street, in Mona Vale. If you’re lucky, you may find a seller in your country. Scanlan Theodore At the very beginning of the video, the singer wears a pink skirt of a luxury brand, Scanlan Theodore, which offers sophisticated and avantgarde creations since 1987. This brand saw the light in Melbourne, and is available everywhere in the country, especially in Melbourne, in the South Yarra district on Chapel Street, or

in Perth in the Claremont district and in Brisbane in Fortitude Valley.

You can find its shops in Chapel Street in Melbourne, James Street in Brisbane, Claremont Quarter in Perth and Rundle Street in Adelaide.
If you’re looking for this boutique in Sydney, you can head to Strand Arcade, a historic heritage site with a glass canopy and Victorian design that houses the best fashion shops of the city.

A CAMPAIGN THAT DID NOT COME AT THE RIGHT TIME...
f the campaign ran before and after the Queen’s speech and costs more than $15 million, making it the biggest investment to promote Australia to UK people in more than a decade, it didn’t convince everyone, and we can understand why. Of course, the cute marsupials, the white sand beaches and the direct message to attract British people that are tired about Brexit to Australia are quite convincing. However, on the internet, some Australians were revolted and claimed that this video does not illustrate the real Australia, which is experiencing drought, heat waves and many fires. The images of blue sky and happy and healthy koalas does not correspond to the current reality and to the images we all saw on the news channels, like the thick layer of smoke that was present over Sydney (and sometimes going as far as New Zealand ), the thousands of koalas being burned by fires and losing their natural habitat. Australia’s Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has been very criticized recently, he was on vacation in Hawaii when the country was devastated by fires... (by the way, he was also the former director of Tourism Australia). Here are some tweets that we found on Twitter:
If the tweets weren’t really cool, neither were the critics in the press. The Sydney Morning Herald notes the fact that most of the actors in this advertisement were filmed in places that are not affected by the fires, the shooting that took place on beaches where everything is beautiful and perfect is in huge contrast with some pics and videos we have seen of real people running to these beaches to basically escape the hell caused by the fires. Sally Cope, who works for Tourism Australia in England, said the broadcast of the digital campaign was temporarily stopped by respect: « We’ve paused advertising activity that was possible to do quickly, so all digital advertising. ». Indeed, the communication plan is launched on various supports, including television, cinemas and other supports. « Like all Australians, our sympathies go out to the families and communities who are impacted by the fires, and our gratitude grows stronger by the day for the front line services facing the fires head on ».

Here are the organizations that will benefit from this: • « Rescue » - Rural and regional fire departments in the affected states • « Relief » - Red Cross (Relief and Recovery) • « Rehabilitation » - RSPCA Bushfire Appeal.
Following the campaign, the brand Romance Was Born decided to auction the pink sweater worn by the singer with a small koala on it in order to raise funds to help the koalas victims of the fires. Listed at a price of 5,000 Australian dollars, the sweater was eventually sold for 6,300 dollars. Namely, this sweater comes from the « Kinda Couture » collection of 2018, which was shown in Paris in collaboration with Jenny Kee and which was created by Katie Jones. It takes its inspiration from a sweater created by Jenny Kee and which was worn by Princess Diana in the 80s.
Some musicians also joined forces to raise funds on February 16th, with a concert which took place in Sydney, at Anz Stadium. Entitled « Concert For National Bushfire Relief », the event brought together many Australian artists as well as stars of other nationalities. For information, there were rumors that another concert, this time a tour, could be organized to raise funds again. In an interview with ABC, Michael Gudinski, entrepreneur in the music industry and who notably founded Mushroom Records said that he had ideas and that he was working on a tour that would go through several cities (five in Australia and potentially in New Zealand) with major players of the music world. Among the artists that were rumoured to be in the line-up, there were Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Pink, Bruce Springsteen or Kylie. A few weeks ago, it was confirmed that this event would not take place. Here’s what the event page, Sound Relief states: « It is with regret that the organisers of Sound Relief have decided not to proceed with concerts in March as originally planned. The outpouring of support by the Australian and International community in response to the devastation of the bushfires has been both incredibly humbling and moving, illustrated by the significant funds that have been donated to date. Since announcing our intention to undertake Sound Relief 2020

the offer of assistance from International and Domestic artists, industry, media and suppliers has been second to none. However Sound Relief is a series of concert events that we don’t wish to stage lightly and after careful consideration, we believe proceeding with the concerts in March won’t produce the impactful result that we believe these events can - and should - have. We appreciate that there has been a huge amount of anticipation and desire from the public to support these concerts. In the past few months, we have seen fires, heartbreaking loss of life, ongoing drought, extreme storms, record temperatures, flooding and the devastation of our wildlife. It is clear that there is no overnight fix for the issues our beautiful country is currently facing, and our discussions for any future event are subsequently shifting to restoration, recovery and prevention and a view to maximising results to best benefit these areas ».

The year 2019 has ended (two months ago already!) and even if it was less busy than 2018 for Kylie, a few important events happened, including her performance at Glastonbury which was the highlight of her year. Here is a little summary month by month.
THE YEAR 2019 FOR Kylie JANUARY
a medley
Kylie kicked off 2019 with an honor at the « Australia Day Honors List », a ceremony which recognizes and rewards the talent of Australian citizens. The list was released on January 25th and includes award-winning Kylie, alongside Olivia Newton-John and Jillian Broadbent. The singer received this award for her contribution as a national and international artist and performer, and for her roles as a singer, actress, performer and artist.
FEBRUARY From February 16th to June 9th, the « Kylie On Stage » exhibition settled in Perth, Australia, at the WA Maritime Museum. There you could see the work of Dolce & Gabbana, John Galliano, Julien MacDonald, Karl Lagerfeld and Jean-Paul Gaultier, as well as local designers like Peter Morrissey and Mark Burnett, who all worked on Kylie’s costumes. Drawings, sketches, photos and the entire creative process around costumes and tours were also to be seen during this free exhibition. The singer was confirmed as the star of the Brighton Pride which would take place in the city from August 2nd to August 4th. Kylie sang there on the 3rd. On February 17th, she attended the premiere of « 9 to 5 The Musical » at the Savoy Theater in London. She posed there next to Dolly Parton.
MARCH A little before the start of the « Golden Tour » in Australia, Kylie made a surprise appearance at Mardi Gras in Sydney on March 2nd, where drag queens and dancers dressed as cowboys took over and danced on
a medley of her biggest hits. From March 5th to 17th the last performances of the « Golden Tour » took place and passed through Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Bimbadgen and Mount Cotton. Kylie performed at local festivals.

The Kylie Summer tour began on June 20th in London, it took place mostly in England but also passed through Belgium, Spain and Poland. This tour was largely inspired by the « Golden Tour » and echoes the singer’s summer tour after her « Kiss Me Once Tour ». June 30th marks the culmination of Kylie’s year, or even of her entire career. She performed her biggest tracks at Glastonbury, in front of more than 100,000 people, and broke attendance and viewing records. Some special guests accompanied her in this unique moment. We think in particular of Nick Cave or Chris Martin.
JULY On July 5th and a few days after her performance at Glastonbury, Kylie’s album « Step Back In Time » officially ranked first in the charts in England. A few days later, the singer hit the first spot again, this time in Australia! She went on concerts in July as part of her Summer Tour and performed in London with Magic Radio on July 26th, in front of some handpicked fans. A very special event for all those who were able to go there, especially Kirstie and Jodie who ended up on stage with Kylie, to dance during « Locomotion ».
AUGUST The Brighton Pride concluded the summer tour on August 3rd. The singer had special costumes in honor of the latter date.
SEPTEMBER Kylie participated in the 22nd edition of the GQ Men Of The Year Awards on September 3rd, where she won the « icon » award. The collaboration of our Australian and Swedish singer Tove Lo on the song « Really Don’t Like U » came out on September 6th. Much awaited by the fans, the feedback on the song was very positive. The next day, Kylie’s performance on Strictly Come Dancing was broadcasted for the launch of the show. It was a medley of her classics. At the end of the month, the singer went to Italy for a private performance at a wedding. She also took the opportunity to visit the city a little with her team and Paul. 41 www.kylie-world.com

Focus • The Year 2019 for Kylie
OCTOBER On October 9th, Jenifer, a French singer, released a surprise duet with Kylie, entitled « On Oublie Le Reste » for the reissue of her album. On the 18th, another track with other artists, The Vaccines, was made available. It’s called « Lazy », and it is part of the soundtrack for the movie « Shaun The Sheep: Farmaggedon ». The « Golden Tour » won the « Best Live Concert » prize at the UK Music Video Awards! Kylie went to the opening night of the reopening of the Louis Vuitton store on Bond Street in London where she performed some songs.
NOVEMBER On the occasion of the preview of the film « Last Christmas », Kylie went to BFI Southbank in London in a pretty long pink dress by Erdem. She was also seen in the studio alongside several producers who have already worked with her on previous projects, and is planning on working with them, probably for a new album. On November 22nd and for the first (and only) time on television, Kylie performed the brilliant « Slow » / « Fashion » mash-up on the Graham Norton Show.
DECEMBER The singer started the month on her way to the British Fashion Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in London. On December 6th, Kylie was in Dubai to sing her biggest songs in front of fans around the world. The singer performed during an hour and a half and won over the audience and the journalists who were there. On the same day, the much awaited DVD of the « Golden Tour » was finally released! And how could we not talk about two other events that marked the end of the year ? First, the show Kylie’s Secret Night, where the singer performed some songs (but before she had taken part in pranks and hidden cameras, and had surprised a few fans...) while the few people that were there that night believed they had been invited to a « Kylie-themed fan extravaganza ». And then, the Australian tourism campaign, for which Kylie shot a three-minute promotional clip, highlighting the beauty of her country. 42 www.kylie-world.com

Rumors about an engagement
I
t had been a while since we had heard such rumors! Every time Kylie has a new boyfriend, there are many articles in the newspapers about the singer being proposed to and so far only one of these proposals has been confirmed, the one with her ex-boyfriend Joshua. Now, New Idea magazine revealed the words of an insider close to the couple: Paul was going to propose to Kylie during the Christmas holidays, after almost two years of relationship: « Paul has splashed out on an emerald Cartier ring ».
The same source added: « He’ll pop the question in Australia as they prepare to spend the holiday with her family in Melbourne ».
It seems Paul chose this gem because it is Kylie’s birthstone and asked Dannii for help to make this a surprise. For the moment, it’s just rumors (and to be honest, it’s not really our business!), but we wish Kylie and Paul lots of happiness!
B
Modern Technology DARLING
efore the transition to the new year (and the beginning of a new decade), Kylie shared on her social networks the video of an interview dated 1997 for a program called « Good Stuff » where she answers questions from Davina McCall and talk about new technologies. It was around this time that sending e-mails started to happen and Kylie said she thought it was a « fantastic way of communication ». She also presents her website, kylie.com, where fans can log in. The singer told Davina (who was her dancer in the music video of « Word Is Out ») : « I am an internet buff. A year and a half ago I was computer illiterate, but once you get into it, it’s quite addictive. I need to check my e-mails, and keep in touch with people… ».
On her post, she added different hashtags, quite appropriate: #BackToTheFuture ... #FeelingFuturistic #TuneIn #LogOn #ModernTechnologyDarling. If you haven’t seen this funny video yet, check out the singer’s social media. 44 www.kylie-world.com

THE BEST SONGS OF THE DECADE
O
n Dec 18th, 2019, Rolling Stone India published an article regarding their « Top 100 Songs of the Decade », and in that list Kylie appears three times ! N° 89: GET OUTTA MY WAY Minogue continued cranking out great pop albums, experimenting in different genres, collaborating with some of the most unexpected artists (um hello, Gente de Zona!) and of course some killer singles this decade. While her 80’s and 90’s rivals continued to leave an impact (moreso only through touring with their catalogues), Minogue seems to have matured in the right way. She may not get the same amount of press coverage or chart hits, but her songs work and continue to play/stream well. « Get Outta My Way » was one of her best straight up pop singles and actually serves as the key sample in Alesso’s hit « Cool ». N° 52: REALLY DON’T LIKE U (AVEC TOVE LO) There are duets you want and then those you never expected and then finally those you never expected and wonder why you never wanted it! Tove Lo and Kylie Minogue are as diametrically on opposite ends of the pop sensibility map as possible but then stylistically, artistically and oddly enough even vocally, well, it’s a duet I never thought would sound so right. « Really Don’t Like U » is understated, it bounces back and forth between both singers in such a chill way, you wonder if both team’s managers were okay with such an ambient-pop collab. It works probably as well as it does because of this, hands down the best no-hype collaboration this decade. N° 27: FEELS SO GOOD Just before MNEK became a household artist in his own right, he was busy doing stellar covers and of course, working with other artists. His best work came with Kylie Minogue. This track from her « Kiss Me Once » album was a highlight. The MNEK production stamp was evident from the first bleep and while most of Minogue’s hits had been a more house and club feel, « Feels So Good » was more mid-tempo electronic, creating a different sonic sound for her, one filled with sunshine and soulful pop.

a new duet between kylie and robbie ?
O
n December 23rd, the Daily Star announced that Kylie « had a special new year gift for fans featuring her very famous pal Robbie Williams ». The magazine reveals that the pair had actually written and recorded a new song together for Robbie’s last studio album « The Heavy Entertainment Show » (released in 2016) and that it hasn’t seen the light of the day… yet. Apparently, Kylie told the Daily Star : « There’s a song with Robbie in existence but it hasn’t materialised. It’s great, possibly for the future. I would love that, I daren’t say the name of the track in case ». We have all heard about a duet called « Disco Symphony » that Kylie and Robbie have recorded. We hoped it would be in Robbie’s 2016 album but nope. We thought it might be in his « Under The Radar Volume 3 » album (a special collection of b-sides, demos and rarities that never made it on to a full studio album - KYLIE IF YOU’RE READING THIS WE ALSO NEED THIS KIND OF ALBUM IN OUR LIVES - PRETTY PLEASE) but… nope, and then on his 2019 Christmas album…. But … still nothing. I think I read somewhere that Kylie had said it wasn’t « good enough » so I can only suppose this new duet is another song…. We’d really love a new Kylie/Robbie duet to be honest. Now let’s wait and see…

KYLIE At the AAA ARTS AWARDS DINNER
O
n Thursday January 30th in New York, Kylie went to the American Australian Association Arts Awards Dinner (yes it is THAT long) with her boyfriend Paul. The purpose of this association is to strengthen cooperation and understanding between the institutions and the people of the United States and Australia. The 2020 event was dedicated to recent fires in Australia, and the goal was also to raise money to help the country.
the best selling cassettes of 2019 in the uk
he announcement came from the English Official Charts’ website, which brings together a good lot of statistics regarding album, vinyl and cassette sales. The number of cassettes sold are is the highest we have seen for the past 15 years with more than 80,000 cassettes sold in 2019 against 50,000 in 2018. This increase is notably due to the fact that more and more artists are releasing their album in this format. In first place of the ranking is Robbie Williams with his « The Christmas Present » album which exceeded 20,000 cassette sales, it’s also the album that has sold the fastest on cassette since « Now That’s What I Call Music! 52 » in July 2002! Robbie Williams is followed by Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey and Lewis Capaldi. We find Kylie in 8th position with her « Step Back In Time - The Definitive Collection » album, just after Madonna and her « Madame X » album. As a reminder, Kylie’s album « Golden » ranked second in the UK best-selling cassettes in 2018.
« As always they have my love, they have my devotion. I think of them constantly ».
Kylie told The Daily Telegraph. The singer was surrounded by many other personalities, including Naomi Watts, Katie Holmes, Laura Brown and Deborra-Lee, with whom she posed. Kylie wore a purple Ralph and Russo dress, which she had previously worn in several other colors. Following the dinner, a video retrospective of Kylie and her career was shown on the stage screen, which lifted the guests from their seats. The singer, who was introduced by Naomi Watts, was also honored this year in recognition of her contribution to the entertainment and arts industry and for speaking out and donating to fight against fires in Australia.

O
the best christmas albums of the 21st century
n January 21st, a Soundcloud account called « Heartcore » released an excerpt of track allegedly sung by Kylie that had never been released and which lasts just over 10 seconds. The track, which is quite disco, reminds me a bit of Dua Lipa’s song « Don’t Start Me Now », well, they are kind of similar in any case. Some claim it may not be Kylie on the song, others say that it’s a song from another era (KMO) and others claim that Kylie re-recorded the song from Alex Newell - « Need Somebody », which has the same sounds but not the same words… Since then, the extract has been deleted from the Soundcloud account and we don’t have more information… Whatever happens, this song could « suit » the disco sound that Kylie had announced for her new album… Let’s see if this song will be on an upcoming album !
O
n December 17th, Billboard posted online their list of the « 21 Best Christmas Albums of the 21st Century », and at number 7 is our very own favorite Australian’s 2015 Christmas album (which is honestly really good!). Here is what they say about the album: « Though some fans might have expected 2015’s Kylie Christmas to innovate a well-worn genre by, say, injecting it with some EDM (electronic dance music) oomph, Kylie Minogue’s first Christmas collection smartly sticks to timeless, lovingly executed arrangements of secular holiday fare. « 100 Degrees », featuring sister Dannii Minogue, does nod to Kylie’s trademark disco style, but standards like « Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas » and « Let It Snow » prove the chameleonic Aussie pop star is capable of adapting to just about any musical style. And the album’s original material holds its own alongside the yuletide classics, the standouts being the Chris Martin-penned « Every Day’s Like Christmas » and the tongue-in-cheek « Oh Santa ».

KYLIE in THE MASKED SINGER ?
his is the crazy rumor that ran on the internet : is Kylie participating in the Masked Singer UK TV show? In fact, the show’s jury and many people on Twitter were convinced that our Australian was hiding behind the octopus. It’s true that if we have a look on the clues that have been given by the show (one of them is a photo of Jason Donovan younger... which could have be related to the Neighbours era) it could have been possibly be her. However, the other clues didn’t seem to match: the person behind the octopus had a link with the catwalks, the shows « The Apprentice » and « I’m A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here » ... We listened to the performances of the little octopus and we didn’t believe that it’s Kylie (especially since the recording of such a program takes a LOT of time and our Australian has moved a lot in recent months). Other rumors say it was Dannii, Laura Whitmore, Holly Valance, Ashley Roberts or Courtney Act… The octopus was finally eliminated from the show and it was Katherine Jenkins, singer who had participated in the second edition of the concert « Kylie Christmas ».

KYLIE at the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME ?

holidays in australia
s it is often the case for the holiday season, Kylie chose to travel to her native country, Australia, to spend time with her family. Paul shared a photo on social media of a Melbourne restaurant: « Attica » where he probably went with Kylie and wrote «#Heaven. Thank you for a great evening @benshewry @ atticamelbourne». And for the new year, the two lovers both posted a picture of them together on Instagram: one on Kylie’s account with the legend « This Guy » where we see them on a boat both smiling and looking at each other and another on Paul’s account, with the caption « This girl », where Kylie is sort of hiding them with a towel and which was apparently taken in the same place at the same time… Isn’t it just too cute ?

he Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is a museum and Hall Of Fame located in Cleveland, Ohio, and it documents the history of rock music, its artists, producers, engineers and other notable figures who participated in its development. Each year, new inductions take place and Whitney Houston was the only woman honored in 2020. An article by NPR Music wished to highlight this injustice, which has already been reported several times over the years. The site has created a playlist on Spotify, and among the 41 people put forward and who, according to them, should be inducted: « Barbra Streisand, Dolly, Melissa Etheridge also deserve a spot this year, but if the Rock Hall truly wants to be international it should also recognize «Australia’s biggest pop star ».
Given the lack of women to join this museum, there is a real doubt that Kylie will be inducted any time soon…
SECRETS OF MUSEUM BBC2
behind-the-scenes documentary « Secret Of Museum » from the V&A Museum was broadcast on BBC 2 on February 6th. It’s obviously the first episode, but it featured Kylie’s permanent exhibition when she was on tour for Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour. Vicky Broackes, who’s Kylie’s costumes curator, said that each object is looked after in such a condition that people will be able to look at them in 100 years from now. There is also a pic of one of Kylie’s dressing rooms. She said : « We were allowed to go down to a show and meet Kylie in her dressing room and took this photograph to get a real authentic feel of what it actually looked like. She’s a real person with messy shoes on the floor, the costumes hanging up, things that looked like they’d been pulled out and put back in again in a hurry ». The episode is still available on the BBC website, however you will need to have an account and live in England to be able to access it. 48 www.kylie-world.com

Y kylie in the dolly parton documentary
A
documentary on Dolly Parton which talks about her life, career and music was released on December 26th on Netflix. With the presence of the artist herself, many renowned guests were invited to speak about Dolly Parton and tell a few anecdotes about the singer, all interspersed with music video and extracts from live performances. Of course, as you know, if we’re talking about it, it’s because Dolly was Kylie’s main inspiration for her Golden album, but also because our fave Australian is in the documentary. She only appears for a few minutes, but offers some testimonies on Dolly : « Dolly does have a cartoon image. I don’t know if that sometimes do her detriment that she depends on that gag or she’s just getting in there before anyone else does ». « Back in the day when she started outit must have been really tough to be a woman in this industry. But she became a kind of pioneer for feminism. Dolly was able to deliver a feminist message, pretty much in disguise ».
eah, we know, our magazine is supposed to talk about Kylie Minogue. However, this is for information because it could at some point be a «problem» for our Kylie: Kylie Jenner recently filed three new brands for trademark: « Kylie Con », « Kylie Kon » and « Kylie Museum », probably for future projects (a museum? Wtf). These new trademark filings are in addition to the 130 (!) she already has, including the phrase « rise and shine » which has gone viral on social networks. She filed by registering « Kylie Body » and « Kylie Body By Kylie Jenner » and other in the past include « Kylie Hair » and « Kylie Baby ». Kylie Jenner wants to use these brands for clothing, beauty, handbags and events, including exhibits and interactive experiences according to the documents. However, before owning these marks, Jenner will have to wait for it to be approved and it must go through a strict process which can take years if someone else challenges it. Talking about Kylie Jenner... Big drama in the fanbase! At the end of January, when searching on Google for « Kylie Minogue », it was Kylie Jenner’s name and face which appeared instead and vice versa… It was an issue which lasted a few days and which got all KM fans slightly upset to say the least and everyone was like « What’s going on? ». Obviously, Google was having some issues... when watching a Kylie Minogue video, Kylie Jenner’s name was below the video instead (and basically it was the case for all of Kylie’s videos) and vice versa. Let’s see the good side of things Lovers, people who searched for Kylie Jenner were able to find out who Kylie Minogue was… Google’s mistakes sometimes contribute to people’s culture!
« I’d like to have bits from allsorts of people but definitely something from Dolly which is the comunication with the audience, the love for her audience, and the love that the audience have for her obviously. But just to be really spirited and dedicated and just... be who you are! Dolly could do stand up I’m sure. I don’t care if I’ve heard the joke twenty times, I’ll still laugh because Dolly knows how to bring it ». « Dolly can do anything, she’s crossed-over to pop, she became an actress when she had no idea what it even meant, learnt everybody’s lines apparently. I think Dolly is a cameleon. The back bone will always be Dolly ». « When we think about Dolly and I talk about the light emanating from her and all of that, there’s got to be the other side. The light doesn’t happen without the dark so that’s got to be there somewhere. How much that she would like to reveal or needs to reveal, I don’t know ». If you want to see the entire documentary and Kylie’s testimonies), go to Netflix !

Valentine’s Day at the theater
t is a discreet message that Kylie posted on her social media on the day following Valentine’s Day, with the legend « Date Night ». The singer shows us that she went to the theater (Old Vic Theater in London) with Paul to see the play called « Endgame » with actors Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Cumming. The show’s plot tells the story of an old blind man called Hamm (Alan Cumming) who finds himself butting heads with his servant named Clov (Daniel Radcliffe). The two bicker in a bare room as they are occasionally interrupted by the nostalgic commentaries of Hamm’s old folks, Nagg and Nell.

INTERVIEW WITH QUENTIN HARRISON On the occasion of the release of the book: « Record Redux: Kylie Minogue » by Quentin Harrison, which talks about the complete discography of the princess of pop, the author himself gave a short interview to Isa. He talks about his career, the creation and the work around this book on Kylie and we asked him a few questions about our favorite singer!
Can you introduce yourself in a few lines ? (Background, job...). Sure. Well, my name is Quentin Harrison, I’m a professional writer and music critic. I got my start in a daily weekly arts paper in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio in December 2006 and have been going ever since. I’ve done liner notes, various columns/articles and been featured in books throughout my 14-year career thus far. You can read a lot of my work over at Albumism.com currently. However, I do have a day job working as an accounts payable specialist for a mining firm and have recently returned to university to finish my higher education goals as of last month. I’m quite busy.
only been featured in my Donna Summer installment (Book 3), but I plan to use it in my eventual Gloria Estefan volume (Book 7) due out in 2022. What inspired you to start writing this series of Record Redux books ? I wanted to create something that I, as a longtime music collector, listener and geek, wanted to see; additionally, I wanted to put something out into the world about these women who so often rarely get their critical due in broader musical discourse.
How did you « select » the stars you would be writing about ? I mean there are so many... They are women that I enjoy listening to and that I’m For those who don't know, could you start off by passionate about. Further, they are women who, as a telling us what exactly we can expect when buying I remarked about in the previous question, rarely get one of your Record Redux series books ? How long on average does it take you to write one book? A book making cycle can go anywhere from nine to 12 months— « Record Redux: Kylie Minogue » took exactly one year and two weeks to make from start to finish. Specifically, the writing and editing portion can take up about five to six months in a nine to 12 month stretch, so about half the time I just stated for the overall book making. Which is your favourite book in the ones you've written so far and why ? I really can’t pick a favorite because each one is unique and special to me. Each one taught me something and brought something to my life.
THE BOOK AND KYLIE Are you a Kylie fan ? If so, since when have you been following her career ? I’ve been into Kylie since about the spring of 2002—I was a « Fever » convert like many stateside listeners. But, I had known her by reputation as early as 1998. If you had to describe Kylie in three words, what would those three words be? Progressive, vibrant and musical. What are your personal top three fave Kylie songs, and your favourite era/album? « Put Yourself in My Place », « I Don’t Need Anyone », « Almost a Lover » (songs); my favorite album is « Kylie Minogue » (1994) and my favorite era is anything deConstruction Records oriented honestly. Did you find it hard to summarize her career in just one book ? It was a challenge only in the sense that I wanted to be sure I did it justice—I hope I did, you’ll have to tell me how I did. Which era(s) (if any) did you like writing about the most and why ? I’ve always been fascinated by the deConstruction Records epoch because it was amazing to watch someone who had so little creative control prior sort of spring to life and find her voice. How long did it take you to write this book ? A year and two weeks. Did you learn anything while writing the Kylie book ? If so, what? Yes and it may be surprising but I learned to be patient; books take time and while I had done four before this one, this book really made me put patience into practice. You can find out this book looking for « Record Redux Kylie Minogue » on the Amazon’s website. 51 www.kylie-world.com

Interviews • The Guardian
Kylie was the covergirl of the December 2019 Edition of the GUARDIAN GUIDE MAGAZINE, and was interviewed. Here’s the article below.
THE GUARDIAN GUIDE MAGAZINE december 21st, 2019 united kingdom Ahead of a festive TV special, Kylie Minogue takes a tour through 30 years as a pop pioneer - with a little help from her friend Alan Carr. As told to Michael Cragg. Fans of Kylie Minogue often talk about her 30-year career in terms of chapters. There was the late80s perm-pop era, post-Charlene from Neighbours; the dance-pop era; the hot pants-sporting disco era; a slightly less successful indie era; and last year’s country era. This summer, however, saw her gloriously combine them all during an emotional Sunday afternoon « legends » slot at Glastonbury, 14 years after she was forced to cancel a headline performance following a breast cancer diagnosis. Woven throughout her career has been an old-school devotion to privacy: we know the Kylie, she’s keen to present, but perhaps not the real one. If anyone can get her to open up a bit, though, it’s Alan Carr, with the pair showcasing their decade-long friendship for Christmas Day’s Channel 4 special. Titled Kylie’s Secret Night, it sees the enduring pop icon surprise a handful of super-fans with performances, chat and even a comedy skit in which she at one point says: « Spank me harder, harder! » in the back of a taxi.
This afternoon, ensconced in the corner of a fancy central London hotel and giddy on Christmas and high-grade tea, the pair muse on Glastonbury, passionate fans and, most crucially of all, the strength of sticky tape. Alan Carr : So Kylie, what are your Christmas plans? Kylie Minogue : Just having some family time. Usually I’m in Australia. AC : Whenever I get asked this, people think I’m being elusive, but I work hard all year and I just have a lock-in. I just wear a onesie for three days and drink red wine, and my lovely husband waits on me hand and foot. Do you know what I watched last year? I’m so embarrassed... The Meg. KM : I’ve never heard of it! I go for Elf. Maybe The Muppet Christmas Carol. The Sound of Music. Love Actually. And – can I say? – I love wrapping presents. AC : This isn’t going to stay in the interview, obviously, but do you find the quality of sticky tape has gone down over the years? It doesn’t stick any more! KM : Because it’s Magic Tape, and that’s not good for wrapping presents. You know, the one that’s a bit opaque. 52 www.kylie-world.com
AC : Well, there’s your headline for this. « I’ve been using the wrong Sellotape for years »: Kylie exclusive. Maybe we should all just use tit tape! It’s never let me down. Do you eat turkey? Do you have a barbecue on Christmas Day? KM : We have both. So you have the barbie going, because it’s usually boiling, but we’ll probably have an honorary roast, because you have to. But we don’t do what we did when we were kids, where all the cards were snowy and you’d put the snow on the windows and the tree had fake snow, but it’s 35-40 degrees outside! For New Year’s Eve I don’t mind working, because you don’t have the pressure. One year, I was home alone. I just watched TV, and it was bliss. Well, I mean, I didn’t have a boyfriend, I didn’t have any family here, but I really enjoyed it. AC : Oh, Kylie, I’ve got a spare room! Ring me, we’ll have a lock-in together. I want to ask you this: at parties, do you put Kylie songs on? KM : No! I don’t do that. Someone else might. If they do, I just have to roll with it, I suppose. Depends how many rosés I’ve had at that point. So have you been to Glastonbury, Alan? AC : I have. I had a bit of a midlife crisis before I turned 40 and I Isa, Jan/Feb 2K20
thought: What haven’t I done? Everyone said: « Go to Glastonbury! » So I went, and it was the muddiest it’s ever been. KM : I’m never going with you! AC : No, don’t. You see those Instagram people and they’ve got the wellies and the cut-off shorts. Well, I had a footprint on my hat and red wine down my top… It was only 9am. You didn’t go out and about at Glastonbury, did you, Kylie? KM : No, no. I’d only been once before, which was a fly-in and fly-out situation with the Scissor Sisters. So just [playing] one number. Now I get it: you’ve got to call up your friends when you do that kind of thing, which I ended up doing with Chris [Martin] and Nick [Cave]. In a way, I still haven’t had the Glastonbury experience of being there overnight, roaming around, seeing everything. I still feel like I have to do it, as a rite of passage. I’ll probably be more like your picture; I don’t think I’ll be able to manage it like the cool girls. In fact, maybe I’ll retract my former statement: I should go with you and we can get real sloshy together. AC : Next year, they’ve got Diana Ross in the legends slot. But she’s got such a hard act to follow. KM : [Looks coy] Thank you. People ask me about [my 2019 performance] all the time, and I wish I had a neat little tagline, but a portion of it is a blur. I’d have to watch it again to really go: « Oh yeah, we did that », or, « We stuffed that bit up », or, « That was good ». It’s sensory overload. I had all the build-up, the panic, and I couldn’t even say the word [Glastonbury]. We just called it the Short Show, because the rest of the summer shows were 90 minutes and we had to make [this one] 75 minutes. I had everyone going: « You can’t go over », except for Chris Martin saying, « Do whatever you want! ». Then I had to think about how I was going to address « it » : me being there when I had to cancel so long ago.
AC : Had you ever played to that many people before? KM : I’d never seen that many people. I’ve seen some shots from behind me to the crowd and it’s no wonder I can’t compute it! AC : I’m being really shallow now, but do you get a goodie bag for doing Glastonbury? KM : Actually, I don’t think I did. I wish I’d bought some more merch; I have one T-shirt and one tea towel. That’s it. The tea towel will not be used, even though I love souvenir tea towels. They did make a cake for me, which I didn’t know about until afterwards. When I got backstage there was this fairly sizeable pyramid cake. To this day, I don’t know who made it. There was a little miniature me on it… It wasn’t quite lifelike. Bless whoever made it, though. They really put their heart into it. AC : Speaking of merch, in the TV show, we went to this guy called Vincent’s house. He’s an uber-fan and he had a Charlene jigsaw! And then there was a guy covered in tattoos … KM : Really beautiful ones. AC : … Of every era. He’d even changed his name by deed poll to Minogue. KM : David Minogue. I think he might have been the… I don’t want to say weirdest but the most confronting: « You’ve changed your name!? ». Lots of really touching stories. AC : When you came onstage, obviously it was a big surprise. There were people crying. The love for you in the room! KM : Even after 17 hours of filming in 55 degrees. AC : We did have a little break, which was nice. KM : Two and half hours after it started! I was having a hyperglycemic low, but I got through it. It was a celebration but also forwardlooking. We are not just celebrating something that finished 20 years ago. This year, with Glastonbury, with this TV show, it’s marking this 53 www.kylie-world.com
point in time, but what’s great is what’s happening next. I’m really jazzed about [the music] to come. I think it’s going to be getting back on the dancefloor, like grown-up disco; that’s where I want it to be. Shimmery. AC : In the final part of the show, we voted on the best Kylie single, and if you thought Brexit polarised Britain, you should ask people about their best Kylie song. We nearly had riot police. It was like: « SPINNING AROUND! », « BETTER THE DEVIL …! », « DANCING! ». There’s a lot of love – and even some anger. You’re a gay icon, Kylie, but I feel you’re more than that. You’re an icon. KM : Thank you. That helps me, because when I’m asked [what makes me a gay icon], I don’t think I’m meant to know the answer to that question. AC : If you knew the answer, you’d disappear up your very pert bottom. KM : Being able to look out at my shows for years and years now, everyone’s represented there. Long before our new inclusive society, which is fantastic, my shows have pretty much always been like that. AC : …With you, the hits come every album, and you just give people what they want. Every time there’s something different. KM : People have also seen me not get it right. AC : You’re not talking about the Charlene perm, are you? KM : It wasn’t a perm! AC : It was your real hair!? KM : Yes, I’d just use a diffuser and I’d scrunch it up with mousse. [Laughs] And now I just flatten it out and clip it in. AC : When did you get it wrong? KM : Babe. Plenty of times. I just don’t think you can get it right all the time, but you’ve got to keep doing it to have a chance.

GLAMOUR MAGAZINE DECEmber 25th, 2019 united kingdom Kylie Minogue on her post breakup trip with her parents and how it feels to have everyone think they know her Kylie gets candid on comparisons to Jennifer Aniston, too. by JOSH SMITH
In the heat of summer, adorned in sequin trousers, I danced my absolute tits off in a field to the iconic back catalogue of Kylie Minogue as she sent Glastonbury festival spinning around. The resulting show was the most-watched performance from the festival ever – beating even Ed Sheeran, Adele and Beyoncé - and it’s not hard to see why. Aside from serving up more bangers than a greasy spoon, the queen of pop empowered an audience 100,000 people deep, all of whom went from singing her hits to crying along with her as she shared her own emotional journey to the Glastonbury stage 14 years after she had to cancel her headline performance after a shock cancer diagnosis in 2005. It seems apt that I end my year interviewing the woman behind the highlight of my own year. As I tell her I was there, right at the back, Kylie can’t hold herself together. « Far gone, or far away? » she jokes, « I just want to grill you for a minute ». The grilling of an audience member is important to Kylie as her personal memory of the event is limited. « There are only certain bits that I remember and the other moments I just kept thinking, « just get through it, just make your quick change and get out there in time and hope it doesn’t wrong ! » You know, troubleshooting a lot of the time », she shares. « I think I said at one point, « I want to try and remember this », but it’s really hard. It was so hard trying to compute that many people – I have never seen so many people - and having that energy coming towards you whilst trying to do what you’ve wanted to and trying your best. It was unreal ». Aside from the Glasto debrief to end all debriefs, we find ourselves in a very festive themed London hotel room accompanied by a Christmas tree littered in kangaroo baubles and a koala bear moonlighting as an angel on top of the tree (as is the tradition in her own
home) to celebrate the singer becoming the ambassador for Tourism Australia – her beloved homeland. But aside from being her home, Australia has acted as a place of personal escapism for the 51-yearold star. « I’m not there as often as I’d like to be and even when I am there it’s so hard to really stop », Kylie says. « But it is escapism for me as even when I’m not there, just knowing it’s there and knowing my family are there is reassuring for me ». It’s a place where Kylie has gone to fully escape the reality of life, it seems. « When things go wrong, where do you want to be? You want to be in your home, with your family. Around 20 years ago I latched onto a trip with my parents. I had just been through a breakup and I just felt like life’s a disaster ». « I called them and asked, « you’re where? Can I join you? » It was actually kind of the Outback – it was definitely like using it as escape route! That just filled me up again with that kind of reassurance and love to go, ‘okay, I can face the big world again ». In a year that has seen Kylie score another number one album, she certainly needs a bit of downtime to fully process the achievements of 2019. « I thought 2018 was my best year in a while », she says beaming. « I turned 50, I met Paul (her boyfriend) I released « Golden » and things had found a new place, a new way. And then 2019 just went crazy! ». Going from such highs to the realities of normal life is equally difficult for Kylie to process and her own mental wellbeing has been put into perspective by her year-long boyfriend. « It is the classic situation of your Adrenal glands pumping away and you think, « Yes sir. We’ve got this, we’re doing it! ». And then you stop and they’re going, « right, well we’ve got all this excess energy, what are we going to do with it? You’re going to get so depressed right now! » ».

Isa, Jan/Feb 2K20
« It’s a ride and I’m quite aware of it, especially with Paul who’s been so supportive, but it’s new to him », Kylie continues. « I’ve always lived this life, so I assumed that’s how it goes. But he is someone with such a big heart and is a smart, sensible guy. It’s been interesting to see it through his eyes and actually be able to see it a little objectively and realise it’s not normal to feel like that. It takes a lot of work, good people around and that’s always a work in progress as well. Trying to always, get things right, fine tune them and learn from your mistakes. It’s a funny old business, but it’s the only business that I know ». In this very crazy business, does she constantly feel in competition with herself, I ask. « God yes! I think, « well those stats are pretty good. What’s next? » But I think a lot of that is just out of curiosity as well. I love doing new things. It’s gotten me into a lot of trouble over the years now and then, professionally and personally. But I think that curiosity is part of what drives me ». Kylie’s career has also been driven by reinvention. After all, during her lifetime she has transformed from a mechanic in Neighbours to a gold hot pants wearing pop icon. « I just enjoy it. I think I’m
a natural chameleon, so it suits me. Reinvention has taught me, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t work. But you don’t know unless you try », Kylie shares. During this time Kylie’s personal life has rarely been out of public view. The headlines around her love life have been numerous in particular and so readily available for consumption that everyone feels like they know Kylie Minogue. It’s a topic I discussed with Jennifer Aniston weeks earlier, I tell her. « You met Jennifer Aniston!? I’m so jealous », she squeals before I ask her how she feels about the notion of everyone feeling like they know her, when in fact, we, the public know very little about the realities of her life. « I do feel like somehow we are slightly in alternate universes, I can see the similarity. We’ve just been in people’s lives for such a long time », Kylie continues whilst discussing the comparison to Jennifer. « For me, on a good day, the balance feels right. And I get it, I was 19 years old when I started, and I was in people’s lounge rooms twice a day on Neighbours ».

Interviews • Glamour Magazine At that moment Kylie jumps up from her seat to close a bathroom door behind me, « Can I shut this door? It’s for your Feng Shui », she exclaims skipping off to close the door before returning and unexpectedly adding, « I’ve actually never watched a soap opera, believe it or not. Like none. The first thing I watched the entirety of was Breaking Bad! ». She quickly gets herself back on track. « I have not really answered your question about people thinking they know me », Kylie asserts. « I think mostly I like it. I mean, of course there’s just so much they don’t know about me. I think a lot of that’s good. You need a sense of ownership of yourself and I don’t know that people fully appreciate what a clown I am most of the time and I am the biggest idiot in the room. But it does feel like we’ve done a lot of growing up together and I think they can see that, even if I’ve tried to hide some things I have been through. For the most part it’s been a caring relationship (between me and the public) and I’m thankful for that. It’s not been without its moments like when people are out to get you and the press are awful. It’s definitely not been a journey without its struggles, that’s for sure ». In light of the aforementioned struggles, has she learnt to become a hustler, I ask? « Sometimes I have this vision of myself that I’m a bit meeker than I am, because there’s part of me that is shy, that is insecure and yet I’m doing what I’m doing. There is constant balance between that. I wasn’t the kid at school in all the plays, I wasn’t on the stage. I suppose I would never describe myself as a « hustler », but I think a bit of me is almost lying. You try to get things done, make things work whilst building and relying on a team. Ultimately, I’ve got these great people, but I’ve got to have the gumption to go out there and do it. And I’m driven to do it. Don’t ask me why or how I just am? ». Sitting before Kylie strikes me as someone who has an innate faith in herself but that’s something she has had to work on, she shares. « I have a lot of insecurity of course », Kylie adds. « And I’ve had to fight through every time I’ve been knocked down and people say, « You’re not good enough! » Oh, I’ve had all that and I still get it. That’s just the nature of music. You’re not to everyone’s taste. But I know I’ve had to fight through that. There’s a bit of soft focus that happens over time, but if, actually I stop and think about it, there have been some really challenging times where I questioned if I can put myself out there ». « A lot of that is in my makeup », she continues before revealing something very surprising. « But definitely my parents brought the three of us kids up to, feel like we could do things. Not that we were special at all, but my mum was doing transcendental meditating when I was born, and I didn’t know that until a few
years ago! I thin k
years ago. I think as much she was largely a stay at home mum, I think she really was adamant that we did what we wanted to do and really focused on us. I think she’s helped me or put fertiliser on whatever it is I already had in me to grow ». Change is certainly something that has punctuated Kylie’s career, but one thing has remained consistent, aside from her self-belief. The lack of equal representation between women and men in music is yet to be resolved. Between 2012 and 2018 out of the 700 top songs on Billboard’s year-end Hot 100, women make up 21.7 percent of artists, 12.3 percent of songwriters and 2.1 percent of producers. « I think I’ve been pretty fortunate with that », Kylie says as I ask her how she’s navigated this clear gap in equal gender representation. « I walked into it when it was all men, but I never felt any less. I had to pay my dues and do my time and you know, kind of hustle a way in there, be more decisive about things and have my opinion heard. Luckily, I don’t have any of those stories of the abuse of power that unfortunately you hear about. So, I would like to think in my own way I have done it subtly. I don’t ever make too much noise about it. But I’ve made my way ». Before she spins her way out of the door, Kylie asks to see a photo of me from her Glastonbury performance. As I pull up my Instagram post and read her the caption, « Kylie Minogue, you actual legend. I love you and so does 100,000 people. So incredible to see someone so damn empowering on that stage », she wraps her arms around me in a spontaneous hug. « Thank you for being so positive », she says. No thank you, Kylie Minogue.

get us Poms to visit your shores. Everyone’s been talking about it because it features a certain Miss Kylie Minogue travelling all around us and dressing up in a familiar outfit. And what a Christmas treat, we got to sit down with the lady herself.

I love the idea that Quokka has no idea that he’s posing for a selfie with pop princess of the world. KM : (Laughs) Oh I’ve had to go through a fair bit of stuff to get that photo as well. Steve : I can quit my career, KM : Yeah that was nothing short of surreal. I mean it was really weird seeing a version of Charlene looking back at me. Steve : Did it make you think : oh you know I still got it, I could still go back and do this. KM : It’s reminded me I never had it (laughs).
It’s been a brilliant year for Kylie. She triumphed at Glastonbury and has just released a new live album and DVD called « Golden ». So what will the new year bring for her?
Steve: Are you the sort of person that looks ahead and makes New Year’s resolutions for 2020 ? KM: I’m so bad... I think they’re the same resolutions every year isn’t it for most people : be fitter, be healthier, get work-life balance, you know. I just mess
it’s over ! It doesn’t get any better than that! Kylie Minogue thank you for making my 2020 already the best moment of my life. KM : Well, this doesn’t mean you can scrimp on all the other important new year’s resolutions. Or me. Right, off to the gym we go! Steve : You know what, she’s just so brilliant. I really didn’t know if she was going to actually get involved and let me do that and I was really nervous. But she’s just fantastic Kylie Minogue and like I say, she’s the person that’s been over here on Christmas Day advertising your country to us so I expect a huge influx of Kylie fans from over here coming to see you guys in the New Year.

Interviews • Good Morning Britain
good morning britain DECEMBER 28TH, 2019 united kingdom Kylie was interviewed by Ben shepherd for Good morning Britain on December 28th, 2019. She’s a goddess and remember she played that emotional set at Glastonbury this year. And then her romance with Michael Hutchence from way back then was once again in the spotlight after a documentary about the INXS star was released. Ben: Yeah I sat down with Kylie for a top secret exclusive interview. It was all about her huge year and also a special appearance in the video that was released just before the Queen’s message on Christmas Day. *They show an excerpt the Tourism Australia ad*
KM : (talking about the video) It’s just three minutes of absolute love and dedication I think from our part, and a big team who worked on it, and it was a no-brainer for me. I mean, I’m in for many reasons. A : as a very proud Australian. B : as someone who’s spent most of their adult life in the UK, and C : I got to visit some places that, as an Australian, I had not seen before. Ben : When you recreate a classic Charlene… KM: I know what you’re gonna say… Ben: In dungarees, under a car… KM : That was absurd for a start. Mostly me going « Oh my god I’ve
got a scrunchie on top of my head, I’ve got the curls everywhere I’m wearing that... ». It was very very… I still have no idea what I was doing. Ben : The other thing that I need to know, you kind of poured a pint or was it a schooner? KM: It’s a pint… I’m very proud of that. Ben: Did you actually do it? KM : I did it ! I am so glad you actually asked that question. I did it and it just it was a happy coincidence that the time of the pour tied exactly to that phrase and then I put it on the bar and it goes down… But you’re right I did that. It might be one of my finest moments. *Another quick excerpt of the ad comes on*
Ben : The other thing that I’d never heard of is a quokka. Is that a real thing ? KM : It’s very much a real thing. So a quokka is a little marsupial who’s from the same family as kangaroos and wallabies mostly found on Rottnest Island. I’ve got my quokka selfie. Ben : I guess we sort of are coming to the end of 2019 now and so thoughts turn to, as they do I’m sure in most families, of what the year has been like. I wonder what your highlights have been and your thoughts on 2019 for 60 www.kylie-world.com
you personally? KM : Oh wow. Highlight would have to be Glastonbury. Ben : I had some friends that were there and they made a point of being there for your set and all of them came away saying « forget all the other stuff » of the music that they love. There was an atmosphere and energy about your set that stands out still for them now… KM: That’s so amazing to hear… That has been a highlight, it’s been a busy year. I’ve spent most of the year working on « Step Back In Time The Greatest Hits » so a lot of retrospective and I’m ready to get going again. Ben : The other thing that came out this year that was extraordinary was the Michael Hutchence documentary where you are seemingly honest and it was very intimate. I wonder how you feel about it whether it was, from your perspective… We’ve got a much better insight into the person you knew and loved. KM : Do you know what ? I still haven’t seen the film. I’ve seen my part and Richard Lowenstein is a great director and was a great friend to Michael. It took me a while to warm up and to really… I think in my heart I knew to trust him but I needed some proof of that. And then I thought « I’ve got footage somewhere. I mean I Isa, Jan/Feb 2K20
hadn’t seen it for years and years so I had to find it. But I thought what’s the point in me hanging onto that when he’s the guy to tell that story? » So it was real nice feeling to just hand it over. Part of history that’s part of at least my story with him.
Ben : 2019 is coming to an end and talking 2020. New Year’s resolutions Kylie? KM : Oh my gosh I haven’t thought about that. Ben : You’ve got a few days. KM : Oh… Go to the gym. Ben : (laughs) So you and everybo-
dy else. KM : I’ve been saying that all year and it’s not happened. I mean if I’m on tour it’s okay, but I haven’t been on tour for a little bit. Ben : Kylie, it was lovely to see you and happy New Year !
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH - STELLA MAGAZINE DECEMBER 28th, 2019 UNITED KINGDOM Kylie Minogue on finding love at 50 and why she refuses to be the poster girl for ageless beauty BY Naomi Greenaway
Bow down: Kylie Minogue has owned 2019, what with her Glastonbury triumph, a chart-topping greatest hits and flourishing romance. So who better to look ahead to 2020 with? Naomi Greenaway meets her. « Remember the Kylie album-cover hat, with the curls sprouting out the top? And that slow-mo hug with Jason Donovan in Especially for You? » It’s a conversation I could be having with anyone who was out of nappies by 1987, but in this brief, surreal moment, I am in fact reminiscing about Kylie with… Kylie. « You lived it, so there’s all that nostalgia », she says, hand on her heart (no lyrical pun intended), looking genuinely flattered when I tell her that Kylie, her debut album, was my very first cassette, purchased with my own pocket money. « I guess those songs have stood the test of time in one form
or another ». Well, if one form or another includes being watched at the world’s most iconic music festival by its largest-ever TV audience (peaking at 3.9 million), then, yes, you could say they have. That mammoth moment was of course Kylie’s performance in the « legends » slot at Glastonbury, hailed as a stonking triumph by both critics and fans. « The response just blew my mind », she says in her lovely Aussie lilt. It was the highlight in a year that also saw her greatest hits compilation, « Step Back in Time », hit number one and the culmination of her global tour for « Golden » (her country-inspired 2018 album). If we were studying Kylie-ology, 2019 would surely be the year that the Princess of Pop became a bona-fide legend, but how has it felt from the inside? « Busy! » she says. « But the last two years have definitely been some of the 61 www.kylie-world.com
best of my life. In 2018, « Golden » came out, I turned 50, met Paul [Solomons, her boyfriend, more of whom later], but I also worked my back-
side off and had a really tough schedule. 2019 has felt a bit more settled… although Glastonbury did take up a lot of headspace. This year a lot of things have come full circle. It’s felt like marking a point in time. And I don’t mean that in the sense, « Well, that’s me done, I’m going to do those songs for the rest of my life », rather, « Wow, I got this far. Here I am. What’s next? » » she says. What actually did come next was that she managed to own Christmas, too, with only slightly less air time than St Nicholas himself. There was Kylie’s Secret Night on Channel 4, a mash-up of This Is Your Life and You’ve Been Framed, hosted by Alan Carr; followed by the UK TV premiere of her « Golden Tour ». And over on ITV, her Isa, Jan/Feb 2K20
Interviews • Sunday Telegraph - Stella Magazine Matesong video, part of a campaign to promote tourism to Australia, aired in a three-minute slot right before the Queen’s Speech. « It was such an adventure for me », she says of the eight days she spent filming the tongue-in-cheek ode to the friendship between Oz to Britain. « I saw parts of Australia I’d never been to before in my life ». Today, swathed head-to-toe in flowing pink Stella McCartney, wearing chunky mismatched crystal earrings and sky-high Gianvito Rossi gold heels, she looks every bit deserving of her legendary status. She radiates an inner confidence without a hint of arrogance, and is incredibly polite. In fact, her demeanour is so refined, it’s almost impossible to imagine how she transforms into that fearless, sexy performer. Of course, it’s not only the 51-year-old’s hits that have weathered well. Her petite frame and cheerleader-blonde hair have hardly changed in 30 years (bar a perm or pixie crop or two). When I ask her about being an icon of ageless beauty, her thoughts are clear: « I don’t want to be the poster girl for that, it’s too much pressure ». Does she think there’s excessive emphasis on youth equalling beauty? « Thankfully, I think it’s changing », she says. « That doesn’t mean you have to let everything go. Although I do fantasise sometimes and think, what if I just didn’t dye my roots, or didn’t try to make everything… to the point ». She mimes a little primping and preening. « I think I probably couldn’t do it, but it’s just a personal choice ». She has previously hinted at having Botox – but yes, her forehead wrinkles when she talks, her chin dimples when she laughs and her eyes crease into a genuine smile, something I discover when I ask her about Paul, the 44-year-old creative director of men’s magazine GQ and her beau of almost two years. « He’s very romantic », she says.
« He’s a thinker and a planner. He’s also a great cook. For years, I’ve been the family joke as far as the kitchen goes. But he’s inspired me ». They have been known to spend four hours in the kitchen, she says, making their favourite dish – a creation from Australian chef Neil Perry’s restaurant Rockpool, spanner crab with roasted cherry tomatoes and pasta (« but we replace the spanner crab and the pasta »). I raise an eyebrow at the marathon cooking session. « When you have that person that you chose to do those things with, you just like to be close ». Can she see them growing old together? « I think so, yes » she says. « It’s a good pace. It’s not crazy wild, that we don’t know where it’s going. I just feel like we’re a really good fit ». The pair were introduced by mutual friends, but Kylie, who was happily single after her broken engagement to Joshua Sasse in 2017, says she kept putting off the rendezvous. « Once you’re single, friends start saying, « How about... What about… » But I didn’t want to meet anyone, I just needed a bit of time. So there was a little build-up to finally meeting. It must have just been the right time ». I suggest he had an unfair advantage when it came to pre-date googling. « Well we had worked together in 2004, but I didn’t really remember. Of course my friends showed me pictures and I thought, « He looks nice! » ». She says she felt they had something special from the first time they met. « We talked really easily and there was an attraction. It felt like there was a possibility for a connection. I was trying to be cool, but there was another friend there and he said, « No, you were kind of doing those things that you do »», she says, giving her hair an exaggerated flirtatious flick. Their relationship was sealed with an Instagram snap of them kissing on her 50th birthday. It was 62 www.kylie-world.com
Paul by her side when she picked up the Icon Award at GQ’s September Men of the Year ceremony and it was Paul to whom she blew a last kiss as she stepped out on to the Pyramid Stage. How was she feeling before that epic Glastonbury moment? « It was sensory overload: landing in a helicopter, going backstage, everyone’s a bit jittery. But you just have to feel the fear and think, « Let’s do it ». Chris Martin and Nick Cave popped to her dressing room, and she says she spent the first three songs thinking: « Just breathe normally! Let’s just hope I get through it » ». She more than got through it, but of course that’s only half the story. The subtext is that 14 years earlier Kylie had been due to perform on that stage, but was diagnosed with breast cancer and instead watched the festival from bed in Australia. « I wanted to acknowledge the moment on stage, but I never rehearsed anything because even in the final run-through I got too emotional ». On the day itself, in front of that overwhelming crowd, she managed to reference her cancer battle, but the words seemed to catch in her throat. « I got emotional and had to just stop before it got to the point of no return. I just mumbled something or other. I didn’t even say the word cancer. But even without mentioning it, it reached people ». One of those it reached was a little girl who was dancing along with her mum and dad in her living room at home. She had been going through cancer treatment herself, but had resisted taking her medicine. « Her parents paused the show and said, « See that lady on TV? She was sick too, and she took her medicine » » Kylie says, voice still poised, but eyes revealing emotion. « They got in touch to share that story with a picture of her taking her medicine and I sent her a bunch of goodies back. Those are beautiful moments ». Isa, Jan/Feb 2K20
« What happened after Glastonbury was so amazing to me, so heart-warming. People really felt it. Usually when you’re doing a tour, it’s the most important thing in your life, but most of the world has no idea. A moment like Glastonbury transcended that and I’ll be forever grateful ». Kylie first shot to fame over 30 years ago when she captured hearts as mechanic Charlene in Neighbours. Twenty million UK viewers watched her wed Jason Donovan’s Scott in 1988 – and when it turned out that they were dating off-screen, too? Well, it was more than most teenage girls could handle. In fact, so deeply invested were we that when last year she invited him on stage in Hyde Park for an impromptu rendition of Especially for You, it turned the crowd into a blithering, sobbing mess. « I had fully grown, sensible, smart friends losing it, crying, leaving me messages », Kylie says, « It did something to people that none of us anticipated. It was nothing but pure joy ». Perhaps it was just the closure everyone needed, because back in the ’80s, that teen fantasy didn’t last long. Kylie moved on to Michael Hutchence and was never again as synonymous with « sweet and innocent ». This year, 22 years after his death, a documentary about the late singer’s life, Mystify, featured Kylie’s own camcorder footage. « It was good to share and give more love to that project and I knew it was in safe hands », she says, referring to director Richard Lowenstein, who was also a close friend of the
INXS frontman. The scenes are intense viewing: the intimacy between them and sense of impending tragedy sets hairs on end. « Sex, love, food, drugs, music, travel, books – you name it, he wanted to experience it. As his partner I got to experience a lot of that as well. If you’re a sensual being, all of your senses need stimulation. He definitely awakened my desire for things in my world », Kylie says over the footage. But in 1991 the relationship ended. « He broke my heart. I have to confess that the hurt stayed for quite a long time ». For Kylie, a brief fling with Lenny Kravitz followed, then relationships with photographer Stéphane Sednaoui and model James Gooding, who sold the story of his infidelity to the tabloids. She found love again with actor Olivier Martinez, before an amicable split in 2007, post breast cancer. The constants in her life have been her parents, Carol and Ron, and of course her sister Dannii. « They’re just always there. And that’s amazing – always at the end of the phone », she tells me. She also has a close group of girlfriends in London, « not celebrity friends » (other than author and fellow Aussie Kathy Lette). « Having those people you can be absolutely honest with is so important. There’s a feeling of safety and sisterhood ». But life is busy and connecting with friends is something she wants to make more time for. Her other New Year’s resolutions? « Be fit, be healthy and appreciate small moments ». 63 www.kylie-world.com
