O

ver the past eight months, we have traveled thousands of miles, fishing dozens of rivers with various water and weather conditions. It's been quite the adventure, to say the least. While this lifestyle is an absolute dream come true, it is not without great challenges around every bend. Kype produces a publication and film every three months—which, in itself, is a challenge. Deadlines come quickly, and enormous obstacles, inevitably, find their way into our path—most often, coinciding at the eleventh hour of the deadline. Yet, through it all, I feel privileged and

honored to be in a position where I can document, educate and promote this amazing sport. Along our journeys, I am often asked which areas Kype Fishing Magazine focuses on. Our primary target is to capture steelhead, salmon and trout fishing on the Great Lakes tributaries and West Coast rivers, for both Canada and the USA. We also cover many inland trout rivers which are scattered throughout the continent—and throughout these regions, it is our objective to highlight effective and ethical methods of fishing for all these species. We are gaining strength with each passing issue, as

we acquire new writers who present fresh perspectives and valuable techniques. We are proud of the fact that nearly all our authors, at Kype, are professional guides and/or fishing business owners, each with their own unique expertise and storehouse of information and resources, which they passionately share with you via their individual articles. Keep in mind, as the publisher of Kype, my goal has been to establish a staff of fishermen who can write, rather than a staff of writers who can fish. The difference is that fishermen who write, are the die-hards in the trenches, landing fish day in and day out. They have

planning to capture the vision we set out to create— as well as being in the right place at the right time, with experienced anglers who can not only catch fish on film, but to do it in such a way as to teach and inspire. We’ve all been blessed with a great sport—let’s all do our best to educate and promote this sport in a positive light, being good examples to our children who will carry on the chrome torch. To everyone who has picked up a copy of Kype, to those who subscribe, to those outlets who carry our magazine, I personally thank you. We at Kype, appreciate your support, and invite you to continue with us on our quest to deliver the best in steelhead, salmon and trout fishing. Dake Schmidt

KYPE?

A kype is a hook that forms on the lower jaw of a male trout, salmon or steelhead, during spawning periods. This is their badge of power and dominance that is unique to only these species. It's an explanation point, similar to the rack of a male deer— a sign of a warrior—a sign of strength. Only the brutes, only the stout, only the herculean bucks will display this emblem of pure power. These kype-busting bucks are known to burn out drag systems, shatter graphite, and snap leaders as if they were a strand of hair, and with such a mark of strength, thus—the title of our magazine, KYPE. 4

devoted their lives to this sport and have fishing instincts that are infinitely sharp and precise. Although a fishing guide’s writing style, for example, may be less polished than a professional writer’s, it's the information they bring to the table that has proven to me, to be much more valuable. Whether writing a book or an article, every author's goal is to find “their voice," and it's an interesting concept to read someone's article without seeing the author’s name on it, and know, just by their writing voice, who wrote it. Kype Magazine is striving to establish a “collective voice” that speaks volumes

to anglers around the world, encouraging them (especially those who are stuck in their ways) to step outside the box and explore the unknown, broaden their streamside horizons, and expand their knowledgebase by learning different fishing styles. We eagerly set forth to achieve this goal through our great staff of qualified fishermen and women who write our articles. The filming aspect of our publishing is perhaps the toughest, since it's not as simple as setting up a camera and reeling in fish. There's a checklist about as long as my fishing line, reminding me and my camera crew of every last variable that needs to be considered before taking the first shoot. It takes patience, but, more importantly, in-depth
