NETWORK OF COLLABORATIVE ACTIONS for the enhancement of the urban sustainability

Description This project is about the revitalisation of a deprived residential area, in the west part of Thessaloniki. The main aim is the creation of a network consisted of cooperative and self-managed working structures and collective actions, in order to invigorate employment and the local market, to rehabilitate social weak groups and to create structures that help social reproduction. Emphasis is given to the residential renewal, the utilisation of the abandoned building stock and the creation of free public spaces. The basic element of this proposal is the creation of a research centre for economic construction and material processing, where citizens will actively participate in the design process. Although, the main goal of the project is the construction of social housing complex, the creation of social structures for rehabilitation, a homeless reception centre, as well as the configuration of a cultural-educational centre. This proposal investigates new practices with social direction in the field of the regeneration of deprived areas, as well as a model of intervention which could be applied to respective deprived areas.

new structures in John Fill’s abandoned factory Description The main purpose of this project was the revitalization of the local production in a sustainable way. The restoration and reuse of John Fill’s abandoned factory in the countryside aspires to become a cluster of cooperative agricultural production where the local producers can process raw materials, expose their products, receive technological and educational support while coming in contact with the local community. The architectural proposal consists of two elements: the main building shell and a secondary, light, metal system inside it. Foremost, the basic structure is maintained in order to include properly the essential space needed for the main, productional functions while new point wise roof openings bring sun light into the deep interior of the factory. Latter, educational and commercial uses are mainly accommodated, utilising the big interior height for the creation of two servicing levels.

CITY MUSEUM Description The main question was how to design a museum that could respond to the self-referential act of exhibiting, but in the same time to respond to its public identity. So it came up the idea of a multi-storey single space, an interior plaza, for the permanent exhibitions. A place where interaction can be occurred not only between the visitor and the exhibit, but the visitors as well. The movement around the interior plaza, the diagonal public passage, the multilevel public squares try to organise the way that exhibiting, exploring and interacting affect daily life. Τhe building is divided in three volumes. Τhe main hosts the permanent exhibition, the interior plaza and a projection room. A second volume which host periodical exhibition, offices and a cafeteria is situated across in order to organise museum’s basic atrium. The third volume is placed underground the second public square and contain the museum labs as well as the rest auxiliary functions.

PRIMARY SCHOOL Description The main purpose of the project was the creation of a primary school open to the local community. A school that apart from its educational function, hosts other extra-curricular activities for the neighbours during the whole day. This is accomplished with the creation of two school yards in different levels. The first one faces the main road and gathers facilities such as a multi-use hall, computer labs and a small basketball court, and the second one is located at a higher level which gathers six classrooms. The main building consists of 2 different volumes divided by a vertical path which connects neighbourhood’s level in the north part of the site and the main road in the south. The first volume is a L type building where the classrooms and the multipurpose-hall are situated and the other one contains a library space and some artistic studios which both function separately giving the necessary flexibility depending on the neighbourhood’s needs.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING Description This residential complex is located in the centre of Xanthi, right on the city’s main street. The project’s principal aim was the creation of a vertical, heterogeneous community which is succeeded by a mix use programme as well as the dwelling’s form clarity. The mix use programme is based on the typical greek multi-housing layout where dwellings of various sizes, offices and small scale retail shops provide a day-long mobility. A new way of designing the typical form of “Polykatoikia” is proposed. Public semi-outdoor paths penetrate the main volume giving access to the retail shops which are situated in the original ground level. The rest storeys contain offices and different types of houses for the citizens of Xanthi.

THERMAL BATHS & ACCOMODATION COMPLEX Description The project focuses on a landscape, rich in thermal mineral springs, at a remote mountainous area of the prefecture of Xanthi. The site becomes a kind of platform for the structures and also the physical context for analysis, programming and design of special facilities. Thermal spa facilities, accommodation and ancillary facilities are being developed in order to operate with relative autonomy. At the same time basic facilities are perceived as a unique whole and as a context, flexible to create interactive relationships and open passages with the landscape. The main design concept is the separation of the thermal spa facilities and the accommodation facilities through a diagonal passageway-wall. A cafeteria and a restaurant are situated in the middle connecting public and private functions of the complex building programme.
