This free event at the Belvedere has many cultural activities. The parade also provides music and performances that compliment the cultural experience. Starting at the Metro Hall at Sixth Street, the parade will travel west on

Jefferson Street to Fifth Street, then north on Fifth Street towards the World Fest on the Belvedere, and ends at the main stage on the West Lawn. Over the past 15 years, there has been a 50% increase of international residents in the Louisville area. On Friday, at 2 pm, a large group of these internationals will take the United States oath of citizenship at the Bomhard Theater of the Kentucky Center. Attendees of the World Fest are invited to view the ceremony. Throughout the festival, there are activities you can take part in to learn more about the world. The Global Village allows you to explore the cultures and customs of more than 22 countries. Kid’s World Discovery shares activities with children to better understand different cultures. The World Fest is a free event. It is open Friday to Sunday, 11 am- 11 pm and Monday (Labor Day) 11 am - 6 pm. You are encouraged to bring canned goods to support Dare to Care Food Bank.

Kentucky Bluegrass and Bourbon Festival

The 8th annual Kentucky Bluegrass and Bourbon Festival embodies most of the things the Commonwealth is known for: Bluegrass music, bourbon, barbeque and burgoo served on the banks of the Ohio River. Over 10,000 fans of Kentucky’s homegrown musical style will be on hand Labor Day weekend from Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 2 at the Water Tower, on River Road. The festival is the latest version of the bluegrass festivals held on the Belvedere in the 1980s. The signature events are live bluegrass music performances by local, regional, and national groups, including Storefront Congregation, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Dave Adkins & Republik Steele, The Roys and many more.

Visitors to the 2013 festival can enjoy traditional Kentucky foods and browse vendors offering authentic arts and crafts, while the kids play on the inflatables in the Courier-Journal Kids Entertainment Area (a small fee is charged for entrace). The newest addition to the festival is The Bourbon Experience, a separate area on the grounds that will have wellknown and craft bourbons. There is a fee for tasting the assorted bourbon products. The festival kicks off at 5 pm on Saturday. It is open on Saturday and Sunday from 5 – 11 pm, and Monday (Labor Day) from 1 – 7 pm. Parking is free, admission is $8 before 6 pm and $11 after 6.

Iron Man

The Iron Man race returns to the city of Louisville on August 25. More than 2,800 athletes from across the nation will compete in this elite physical endurance challenge. The top 50 finishers of the triathlon will qualify for the 2013 Iron Man World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The Iron Man stages at Waterfront Park and is made up of three parts: a 2.4mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Athletes venture through Louisville’s scenic areas, Oldham County, and the city of LaGrange. The triathlon ends at Fourth Street Live! Over 12,500 people are expected to descend on Louisville to view or participate in this event. Spectators are welcome to gather along the routes and cheer on the athletes. The swim starts at the Ohio River boat dock near Tumbleweed Restaurant. Swimmers will lap around Towhead Island and finish at Joe’s Crab Shack on the Wharf.

Then the racers will transition onto the Great Lawn of Waterfront Park to pick up their bicycles. They will bike up River Road, cross into Oldham County, loop through the city of LaGrange and back down River Road to the transition spot at Waterfront Park. Then they will start running down Third Street to Southern Parkway passing the University of Louisville and Churchill Downs along the way before heading back downtown. The finish line is at Fourth Street Live! Competitors check in for the event August 22-23. Professional athletes will start the Iron Man at 6:50 am on Sunday and are expected to finish sometime between 3 and 4 pm, with the nonprofessionals arriving over the next few hours. Monday after race day, there is a celebration event for the participants. Awards and the 2013 Iron Man Championship qualifiers are announced.
