ACTORS THEATRE TURNS 50
Actors Theatre of Louisville is celebrating a half century of producing quality stage plays for regional audiences. A community block party on August 17 is the first of several festivities to commemorate the founding of the State Theater of Kentucky. The 50th Anniversary Block Party takes place on Main Street, between Third and Fourth Streets, from 1 – 10 pm. The beautiful National Register of Historic Places theater complex is a far cry from the 100 seat loft that housed the original company. Actors Theatre was formed when two smaller troupes merged in 1964. Almost immediately they moved to an old railroad station on the edge of the Ohio River at the foot of Seventh Street. By 1972, with over 9,000 subscribers, the company had outgrown the 350 seat renovated railway

home. Producing director Jon Jory, who had arrived in 1969, oversaw the move to the 3rd oldest building in the city, the former Bank of Louisville building. With 50 years under its belt, Actors Theatre now stages an average of 20 productions a season and has over 200,000 subscribers. The first event of the 2013-2014 season is the Block party that is free and open to the public. Live music, a prop and costume sale, giveaways, and highlights from next season’s lineup of plays will punctuate the evening, along with behind-the-scenes peeks at the producing process. Everyone is invited to help Actors celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday, August 17, from 1 – 10 pm, in front of the theatre on Main Street between 3rd and 4th.

ST JOSEPH ORPHANS’ PICNIC CELEBRATES 164 YEARS
One hundred and sixty-three times, the St Joseph Children’s Home has held a profitable picnic to raise money for the orphans who live there. On Saturday August 10, the 164th annual picnic will attract over 60,000 attendees plus 3,000 volunteers to the Frankfort Avenue site. St Joe’s carries on the tradition of church picnics with delicious food, raffles, games, and chances to win big prizes at over 60 booths. It has grown into the largest picnic of its kind in the state. It’s also a big reunion day for the kids raised at the facility over the years, some of whom still attend even though they are in their 70s and 80s. A recent addition to the main occasion is Friday Night Live! which takes place on
the front lawn from 5 – 10 pm, August 9. Long time attendees say the reason the Friday night event has become so popular is the live music and the smaller, cozier crowd. This year Friday Night Live! includes the extremely popular cake booth. Saturday’s festivities begin at 11 am. The traditional chicken dinners are so in-demand that they ran out last year, so picnic goers might want to get there early. All proceeds from the picnic go directly to benefit the children at St Joseph’s. The Children’s Home is located at 2823 Frankfort Avenue. There is extra parking on the Brownsboro Rd side of the 40 acre campus.

Over the Edge
Over the Edge, a signature event benefitting the Scouting Unlimited program of the Boy Scouts of America Lincoln Heritage Council, takes place August 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Volunteers get the chance to raise money for a good cause and experience downtown Louisville from a different perspective. Once participants raise $1,000 they can rappel off the hotel, down 40 stories. For anyone seeking to face a fear of heights or who loves an adrenaline rush, this event is an extreme way to show support for the Boy Scouts of the Kentuckiana area. Space is limited to only 92 rappellers. Family, friends, and coworkers can utilize the “Donate to an Edger” tool on the event’s website. Another fun way to take part in this event is to “Toss your Boss.” You and
your coworkers can raise $1,000 as a team. Once the money is raised, register your boss to join the fun and watch him/ her repel down the hotel. No previous rappelling experience is required. The rappeller wears a full-body industrial harness and an industrial descender is used to rappel down the hotel. They control the speed by squeezing a handle so they can go as slow as they like. A back-up line will be controlled from the rooftop for safety purposes. Participants can practice rappelling from a lesser height when they arrive to the site, if it helps them feel more comfortable. Join in the fun watching participants repel down the Hyatt Regency Hotel at 1 pm or take part in the event yourself so you can check it off your bucket list.
