Christmas Trees

Choosing a Christmas Tree

For many families, choosing a Christmas tree together marks the beginning of the holiday season. Clad in hats, mittens, and heavy coats, the image of the whole family sharing the experience of picking out the perfect Christmas symbol is an enduring one. It is also easily recreated. Whether you want to cut your own tree, pick a live tree and have it cut for you, buy a tree already cut, or buy a living tree you can plant, Louisville has everything you need for your Christmas tree needs. The National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) maintains statistics on the number of US families buying a real Christmas tree every year, and they report that "about 23 percent of the consumers will purchase their trees from a 'Christmas tree farm' while about 62 percent will buy trees from a retail lot." An additional 300,000 consumers will purchase their real tree over the Internet or by mail order. For those in the area who are looking to shop local, here are some of the best choices available: First and foremost,“Christmas Tree Lane” is an annual Louisville tradition, located just off of Waterfront Park’s Great Lawn. “Christmas Tree Lane” will offer its annual bounty of freshly-cut Christmas trees for those who don’t want to take up an axe themselves. They will be open daily through Christmas between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Free parking is available for customers along Witherspoon, in the Green Parking Lot at

Waterfront Park (underneath I-64 overpass near corner of River Road and Preston), and in the surface parking lot across from the Great Lawn. Alternatively, there are innumerable tree farms (most belonging to the Kentucky Christmas Tree Association) within easy driving distance of Louisville. They offer the most popular types of trees—white pine, Norway spruce, Colorado blue spruce and white spruce—at varying prices, most of which come in between $30 and $100. While some farms provide saws and/or shovels, some do not, so it’s always best to call ahead to see what’s provided. Some farms even hand out free hot chocolate and candy canes! A full listing of Christmas tree farms within 50 miles of Louisville, as well as their contact information, can be found by visiting our website at www.whigl.com. Finally, of course, are the most convenient options: retail stores. Most stores sell Christmas trees this time of year, which makes it easy for busy holiday shoppers to pick one up along with a gallon of milk (or eggnog…’tis the season!). Grocery stores like Kroger and Meijer often offer cut Christmas trees, while hardware and outdoor stores like Lowes or Home Depot may offer a greater range of sizes. No matter which type you prefer or where you get it from, the Christmas tree is a visible reminder of Christmas joy. Choose wisely, and happy holidays!

The Brown Forman Nutcracker

The familiar story of The Nutcracker begins with a scene that could come from any family’s Christmas Eve: the young Marie (more commonly known as Clara) is given a beautiful nutcracker for Christmas. From here, however, the scene expands into one of magic and danger, as she’s subsequently caught up in an epic battle between gingerbread men, toy soldiers, and an army of mice led by the evil Rat King. As the nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince, Marie’s intervention is crucial to his defeat of the Rat King and his evil minions, and as a result, the two are given heroes’ accolades by the Sugar Plum Fairy in a final splendid waltz. The Brown Forman Nutcracker is locally celebrated for its unique artistic vision of this classic production. Scenery features subtle nods to Louisville’s architecture and landmarks and includes 27,000 square feet of canvas and 6,000 pounds of steel. More than 40 artisans in nine states contributed to the costumes, using nearly 1,000 sequins and 2,730 feet of tulle. This attention to detail hasn’t gone unnoticed; since its debut two years ago, fans have raved about the unique addition of Louisville landmarks

8

within the scenery, such as the St. James Court Fountain. Other locally-inspired “Easter Eggs” abound, too, such as choreographer Val Caniparoli’s transformation of the original Madame Bonbon and her Polichinelle into “Madame Derby” and her little jockeys. Besides the production itself, the Louisville Ballet is offering an exclusive Sugar Plum Party for young fans of Marie and her handsome prince. On Saturday, December 10, and Sunday, December 18, in the East Room of the Kentucky Center, families can join the children's cast for Christmas festivities. Tickets cost $15, which include access to a bounty of holiday sweets, a photo with the cast members, a reading of The Nutcracker, and much more. Tickets to both The Brown Forman Nutcracker itself and the Sugar Plum Party can be purchased at the Louisville Ballet's website, by calling (502)-594-7777, or by visiting the box office at 501 West Main Street. Groups of ten or more save up to 20%. For more information, call (502)-583-3150, ext. 242. Performances run from December 8 through December 23; tickets start at $30.

When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on an epic journey of self-discovery that reveals to him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. The Polar Express™ 4-D Experience is based on the film from Warner Bros. Pictures and ShangriLa Entertainment and inspired by the beloved Caldecott Medal children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. It combines the visual drama of a 3-D film with a variety of 4-D sensory effects that are built into the seats and theater environment, bringing the on-screen images to life.

This iconic film is brought to life with the perfected use of SimEx-Iwerks 4-D Special FX technology, creating an unforgettable multi-sensory adventure. As the Polar Express arrives at the North Pole, it actually begins to snow inside the 4-D Special FX Theater; when the conductor sings “Hot Chocolate” and the dancing waiters begin to pour, the audience can smell the delightful aroma of every cocoa cup. The 4-D Theater will be open from 10:30 am until 4 pm. See the Zoo’s website at www.louisvillezoo.org for show times. Individual 4-D Theater tickets will be $5 per person, $4 for Louisville Zoo Members and $3 for a second experience. 4-D Theater tickets can also be purchased as part of the Adventure Ticket which includes Zoo admission. This year’s Santa Safari presented by Kroger includes a ticket to The Polar Express™ 4-D Experience.

Ice Skating Outdoors

Outdoor Skating Rinks

Whether or not you’re attempting a triple salchow jump and beillman spin or just going for an hour or two of fun with friends and family, the time for outdoor ice skating rinks is here. Both Louisville and Southern Indiana have their own local outdoor rinks, so it’s convenient to skate no matter which side of the river you call home.

The Louisville ice rink is located at Fourth Street Live!, where it was erected for the holidays as part of Light Up Louisville. City government moved the celebration from its traditional location at Sixth and Jefferson in order to help businesses along the Fourth Street corridor. The portable skating rink uses synthetic ice that will keep the rink available even if temperatures stay above freezing. Brendan Patty, marketing director for Fourth Street Live!, said the rink was created using a polymer surface that allows visitors to skate like they’re really on ice, but doesn’t actually require a refrigeration system. The surface won’t melt, which Patty said will cut maintenance costs significantly. The rink will be open until Dec. 28. The fee for skating will be $5 an hour for adults and

$3 for children under 18. An all-day pass will cost $10 and an all-season pass $40. Skates can be rented for $2. The rink will operate Sunday from 11:30 am to 8 pm, Monday through Thursday from 11:30 am to 9 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 am to midnight. As for Southern Indiana, Jeffersonville’s most popular winter pastime can be found at the corner of Spring and Market Streets. The rink will be open through January 27, 2013 with the exception of Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day. Regular operating hours are Sunday through Thursday from noon to 9 pm and Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 pm. The cost to skate is $8 per person for groups of fewer than 10 people. Unlike Louisville, parking is free and plentiful around Jeffersonville, and the rink itself is made from real ice. Both locations will be selling hot chocolate, coffee, cider, and assorted other warm beverages at the rink locations. Make sure to bring your warmest clothes, as well as a sense of humor for those inevitable slips on the ice.

Louisville Stoneware

Find the perfect gift at Louisville Stoneware

Those looking to give the perfect gift this season will find what they seek in the fine, hand-crafted pottery and collectibles from Louisville Stoneware. Working by hand and from natural materials, the skilled artisans of Louisville Stoneware create timelessly beautiful dinnerware, bakeware, serving pieces, and collectibles that can be enjoyed and cherished for many generations. These artisans pride themselves on removing modern technology and machines from the process of creation, believing instead that the touch of human hands is better able to impart the grace, elegance, and striking imagery characteristic of their craft.

Louisville Stoneware was founded in 1815, making it one of the oldest stoneware companies in the US. Their specialty is decorating their unique gifts with Christmas and Kentucky Derby designs, giving it the perfect blend of local charm and seasonal relevance. They also do custom-made designs for an extra-personal gift. Dishes made at the factory have been proven to be safe for use in ovens, microwaves, and dishwashers, and because of the clay from which they’re made, they retain heat for keeping food warm.

At Louisville Stoneware's downtown location, visitors can fire up their imagination and paint their own unique pieces of art. Plates, mugs, bowls, figurines, platters, or other handcrafted keepsakes are all available for painting. Louisville Stoneware has a wide selection of “greenware” pieces waiting to become one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Visitors apply their own unique design, and the stoneware will be glazed, fired, and ready for pickup at Louisville Stoneware within 10 days. This is an especially fun option for kids, who’ll be delighted with the ability to put their own personalized touch on holiday keepsakes. Paint your own pottery studio hours are MonSat 10 am-5 pm, with last seating at 3:30 pm. Reservations are required for groups of six or more. Factory tours are available weekdays Mon-Fri at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, or by appointment for groups of 10 or more. Retail showroom hours are Mon-Fri 10 am 6 pm, Sat 10 am - 5 pm. Louisville Stoneware is located downtown at 731 Brent Street, directly off Broadway. They can be reached at 502-582-1900.

KaLightoscope

All of the symbols of Christmas are at their biggest and brightest this month at the Galt House Hotel’s KaLightoscope exhibition, on display now until December 31. It’s a spectacular profusion of lights that’s so extensive that it was featured on the Travel Channel’s “Christmas Crazy” show, and this year, it’s been expanded to contain all new, never-before-seen attractions. The main feature, KaLightoscope itself, is a 16,000 square-foot pavilion housing twelve themed sections of holiday sculptures made from light. These luminous Christmas displays are both secular and religious, and contain sections such as “Toyland,” the “Christmas Tree Maze,” and a “Nativity” scene. Some of the lighted sculptures are more than 24 feet tall, but even their sheer size doesn’t compare to the impressive stature of the Galt House’s gingerbread village. In this, KaLightoscope presents the world’s largest, life-size, hand-crafted gingerbread village made entirely from edible ingredients. More than half a ton of gingerbread, two thousand eggs, 450 pounds of flour, and sixteen hundred pounds of sugar were used in the production of the gingerbread village, which boasts a gingerbread path, lollipop Christmas trees, and a peppermint stick North Pole.

After visitors have explored the village, they can enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate near the Gingerbread Snow Fairy Castle—but no eating the village! This is the first time that “Colors of the Season,” an interactive dinner show, will be performed. This show includes actors and a student choir that will share memories of Christmases past through performances and song, while in-house chefs prepare a gourmet three-course meal. Lunch and dinner shows are ongoing through December 24. KaLightoscope also includes Santa and his elves, the Mistletoe Marketplace, a learning center explaining how the KaLightoscope luminaries are made, the Peppermint Express child’s train ride through the Candy Cane Forest, Mr. Sugar Pine the Talking Animatronic Tree, and the Christmas Village with Snow Fairy Castle and resident Snow Fairy Princess. Christmas at the Galt House Hotel and KaLightoscope are open Monday-Saturday 10 am 8 pm, Sundays noon - 6 pm. Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day hours are noon 6 pm. Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Ticket prices vary; check online for appropriate tickets and to make reservations.
