45th annual Art in the Arbor Festival A Mother’s Day Tradition, May 12 & 13 Art in the Arbor is a Mother’s Day tradition in Louisville since 1968, creating a magical atmosphere on the beautiful 8-acre wooded grounds at 4936 Brownsboro Road. The festival has a broad array of attractions besides the quality visual art -- live music, Wine Garden, live art demonstrations, a Kentucky Proud food court, Plant & Pussy Willow Market, the best quality children's crafts in the area, “green” educational exhibits, a cake wheel, and a huge charity raffle. Also, Metro Animal Services will introduce several lovable animals ready for adoption. All the art is original and diverse, with over 100 artists selected by a professional jury, across many media -- jewelry, fired glass, pottery, stained glass, garden & metal sculpture, wearable art, yard art, paintings, and more. No manufactured items or imports are allowed. Bluegrass, pop, world, jazz, and other music styles create a warm, eclectic, family-friendly vibe. Saturday afternoon music is by Keltricity (celtic world) and singer/ songwriter Andrea Davidson (Americana and other genres). Sunday stars the Dulcimer Society, piano stylings by Rich Machin, followed by John Gage of "Kentucky Homefront" with traditional music. The Potluck Ramblers finish the Sunday show with fun and rousing bluegrass. Live art demonstrations will delight all -- blacksmithing on a real forge, intricate glass jewelry fusion, basket making, woodworking, and henna body painting. The Little Loom House will also demonstrate spinning and weaving. Demos are free to observe, although personalized commission items have associated fees. Enjoy the Wine Garden and Kentucky Proud Food Court in the seating near the music stage, which is on the front porch of a lovingly preserved 19th-century farmhouse. Wholly Smokers BBQ and Middle Eastern fare from the Burning Bush Grille provide plenty of tempting variety. Elk Creek Wines will vend tastings, or pour by the glass or bottle. Gelato Gilberto, and Cherry Sue Gourmet are very popular, and ensure that Mom and the whole family can enjoy a delightful treat. Maui Wowi will serve gourmet Hawaiian coffee and smoothies. The "Wheel of Fortune" is a fun way to spin for a cake, restaurant gift certificate, or other prize. The "green" dimension is evident at the popular Plant & Pussy Willow Market, with Master Gardener on-site. Hundreds of pussy willows are sold annually— both cuttings to plant, and dried (up to 6 feet long!) for arrangements. Mature perennials, hanging baskets and many annuals are sold, and an exhibit on Kentuckiana native versus invasive plants is featured. Proceeds from the 100+-art item charity raffle will benefit the Volunteers of America Family Emergency Shelter this year. Citizens Union Bank, Meijer grocery stores, Fenley Real Estate and NELBA (the Northeast Louisville Business Association) generously sponsor the festival. Hours are: Saturday, May 12 -- 10am to 6pm, and Sunday, May 13 -- 10am to 5pm. FREE Admission. Handicap Accessible. Easy drop off and pick up of people and purchases, but there is no on-site parking. The festival is located across from Holiday Manor shopping center, and behind Rodes. Free parking only 2 blocks away, with shuttle each 10 minutes from the Browenton Building, (1 block from I-264 at corner of Brownsboro Road/ Hgwy 22 and Warrington Way), and from Wilder Elementary School, 1913 Herr Lane. 2012 Kentucky Derby Festival Poster
The Kentucky Derby Festival is pleased to announce the selection of Andre' Foreman as the Official Poster Artist for the 2012 Kentucky Derby Festival. Foreman, a Louisville native, is a full-time artist with studio space at the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center. He is a self-taught visual artist and sculptor, with an emphasis in oil and watercolor painting. Foreman’s exhibitions include a one-man show at Indiana University Southeast from 1999-2000 and the Madison Art Club in 2003. Notable recent awards and honors include fourth place in the 2011 Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft Art Car Hubcab Exhibition. “It’s a tremendous honor to be selected as the Official Poster Artist for the 2012 Kentucky Derby Festival,” said Foreman, a Marine Corps veteran who grew up in Old Louisville and the city’s California neighborhood. “I’m interested in everything related to art and I’m excited about people being able to see my work. I worked in the corporate world for a while, but
now everything I do comes back to art. Most of what I create is related to everyday life …I try to train my brain to be like a camera.” Foreman’s work was unveiled at the Kentucky Derby Festival Poster Premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at The Henry Clay in downtown Louisville. The 32nd annual Poster Premiere was open to the public and featured cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a complimentary gift for the first 1,000 guests. There was also a silent auction of framed 2012 Official Posters and the unveiling of 2012 Official Kentucky Derby Festival Merchandise. Foreman was on hand to sign copies of the 2012 Poster. Contributing sponsors of the Poster Premiere were Greater Louisville Inc., New Country Q103.1, The Silver Spoon and United Graphics Printing Group. For the sixth year in a row, the Poster Premiere was held in conjunction with the Derby Festival Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony. Students with winning entries in the Student Art Contest were invited to attend the Premiere. The winners had their artwork displayed at the Poster Premiere. A collage poster of the winning Art Contest entries was available at the event. Over the years, the Derby Festival’s Official Poster Series has become a unique symbol of the community. Past designs decorate offices and homes throughout the city. Peter Max’s expressionistic “Bluegrass Pegasus” launched the series in 1981, and a stylistic and geographical mix of artists have been showcased over the years. The signed collector editions continue to significantly increase in value, and the quality of the Poster Series has been recognized worldwide.
Great Steamboat Race, Wednesday, May 2 The Kentucky Derby Festival is pleased to announce that the American Queen – the largest steamboat ever built – will join the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati in the Festival’s 2012 Great Steamboat Race on May 2. The vessel’s home port is the Beale Street Landing in Memphis, Tenn. The American Queen will begin a series of 3 - to 10 - night cruises this month, with regular stops in Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Chattanooga, St. Louis, Minneapolis/St. Paul and New Orleans. “The American Queen will certainly be a sight to see and will add a striking presence to the Louisville waterfront during Derby Week next year. Having these three vessels compete in the Great Steamboat Race in 2012 is a tremendous way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this unique event,” said Mike Berry, Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO. The American Queen is a six-deck recreation of a classic Mississippi riverboat and is the only authentic overnight paddle wheel steamboat sailing in the United States. The American Queen, which is 418 feet long and 89 feet wide, was launched in 1995 and is currently undergoing a $5 million renovation. She has a capacity of 436 guests and a crew of 160. Tickets for cruise packages aboard the American Queen are on sale now; for more information visit the company’s website at www.greatamericansteamboatcompany.com.

2012 Kentucky Derby Poster by Artist Robert Joyner The Official Artist of the 2012 Kentucky Derby & Oaks is Virginia-based painter, Robert Joyner. It was a family get together to watch the Kentucky Derby several years ago that ignited Robert's interest- soon followed by passion- for thoroughbred horse racing. The vibrant colors of jockey silks and the sheer beauty and explosive energy of the horses fueled a series of dynamic racing images. No where is his "expressionistic" style more evident than in the two powerful paintings which will grace the official tickets, program covers and Kentucky Derby memorabilia. His spontaneous energy and sense of movement is conveyed in the quick strokes of paint and charcoal outlines found in both works. "Watching Robert paint in one of the most unique experiences we've seen" said Clare Jett of JettStream Productions which publishes the Art of the Kentucky Derby series. "His subjects seem to magically appear on the canvas. They emerge from his lightening quick paint strokes as if he willed them to life". Mr Joyner will sign posters purchased at Churchill Downs on Friday May 4th and Saturday May 5th at designated booths. If attending the the Oaks or Derby, you won't want to miss this exciting opportunity.
